N.J. Still Fighting to Seize Gift Card Funds
New Jersey is STILL trying to get its grubby mitts on the leftover money on gift cards bought in that state. The state plans to appeal a ruling that struck down the law allowing it to claim "abandoned" gift card money. State Treasurer Andrew P. Sidamon-Eristoff has told a U.S. District Court judge in Newark that the state will appeal a Nov. 13 ruling that temporarily struck down a new law concerning seizures that was enacted in July as part of Governor Christie's budget. Personally, I'll never understand why the left over money doesn't go back to the person that originally purchased the gift card in the first place. Comments

Microsoft to Take on Apple TV, Google TV at CES?
Supposedly Microsoft is planning on rolling out a set top box at CES. Why would the company even bother, don't they already have a $199 device that can do this? I could swear they do and its name starts with an X. Word has it that Redmond is—again—eyeing the living room, with a new report claiming that Microsoft will reveal plans Wednesday for a line of $200-ish TV set-top boxes based on a version of Windows designed to be embedded in consumer electronics devices. Intel Insider - It's Not DRM
There have been stories describing Intel Insider as a 'DRM' technology. DRM means 'Digital Rights Management' and is used to control the use of digital media by controlling access, and preventing the ability to copy media such as movies. This means that if you pay only a rental fee, your service provider decides when and for how long you will be able to view your movie. Or if you buy a film it will let you keep and view it forever, but not copy it and share it with your friends, or burn it onto a DVD, mass produce it and sell it on the streets. DRM is a piece of software, not hardware. Now there are opponents and proponents of DRM, and I am not going to get into a discussion about the pros and cons of DRM in this blog; but I will say that Intel Insider is NOT a DRM technology. Big Media Fails to Turn ISPs into Copyright Cops
Because I like to post stories about the RIAA failing miserably, as much as you like to read them, I give you this story. Two years later, we're still waiting. Not only have the largest ISPs declined to cut off accused file-sharing customers but one ISP, Time Warner Cable, did more than anyone to derail a litigation effort launched this year against file sharers by independent and adult-film studios. An RIAA representative declined to comment for this story. Comments

nPowertek Hurricane NPH-105 Heatpipe HSF
FrostyTech has posted a review of the Hurricane NPH-105 heatpipe HSF from nPowertek today. The cooler has an interesting design that features two normal size heatpipes coupled with a large copper heat column in the middle of the heatsink. The nPowertek TTIC NPH-105 heatsink is an interesting CPU cooler because it is constructed with 6mm diameter copper heatpipes (two) and a not so common 25mm diameter copper 'heat column' that is capable of moving a lot of heat on its own. A heat column is like a big heatpipe and it conducts heat in much the same way, but with a larger surface area in contact with CPU heat source and the heatsink's cooling fins. Comments

APB Reloaded Beta May Launch Next Month
Apply to be a "closed beta tester" for the relaunched APB? I thought the $60 we gave them the first time "qualified us." I posted this in our Gaming [H]eadlines earlier this afternoon but a lot of you wanted to leave a comment on this story so I gave it a post of its own. The APB Reloaded twitter account has word on plans for closed beta testing of the online sandbox game revival (thanks Big Download), saying: "If everything goes exactly like the plan , the Closed Beta will be launched somewhere in late February ." A subsequent tweet and a follow up correction indicates they will be revealing details this week on how to apply as a tester. Comments
