PhotoFast Intros GBox Mini USB 3.0 to SATA Adapter
SSD and flash memory specialists PhotoFast developed what they call the GBox mini, an adapter that converts USB 3.0 to SATA. The adapter connects to the host with a USB 3.0 connector (for data and power), and an additional USB 2.0 (purely for power). The two connectors share the same cable so clutter is minimized. On its other end, the adapter has a SATA connector with both data and power ports. It can connect to any SATA HDD, SSD, or optical drive. Although the USB 3.0 interface has a generous maximum bandwidth of 4.8 Gb/s, the device has transfer speeds of up to 128 MB/s (SATA device to system) and 96 MB/s (system to SATA device). The GBox mini comes with a copy of DriveClone 7 Pro software bundled, necessary cable, and is expected to be priced at US $22, when it hits the Japanese markets next month.

Microsoft's Next Operating System Getting Drafted
Less than a year into the launch of Windows 7, and a few months in the making for its first service pack update, Microsoft has already taken large strides into outlining the key areas the company's next consumer operating system would focus on. Aimed to be released within the year 2012 time-frame (when Windows 7 will have become 3 years and 2 service packs old), Microsoft's next operating system is referred to as "Windows 8" (tada). The company had recently released to its industry partners a set of presentations, all covering different departments of the product's development, to outline the ideas in store for the developers. These confidential presentations were leaked to the public domain.

Among these presentations, some of the most interesting ones give us an insight on what interfacing with the PC will be like in a few years from now. To begin with, the average PC is poised to get a few mandatory updates to its hardware capabilities (just as how having a sound controller became mandatory for consumer PCs through the late 1990s). The PC will have a few sensors, cameras and accelerometers that will serve dual-purpose of user authentication and utility (use by software).

IDEMA is the data-storage industry's trade association dedicated to driving technology standards that support the advancement of data storage. The campaign focuses on helping the computer industry prepare for the transition of hard disk drive (HDD) processing from the historical sector lengths of 512 to 520 byte increments, to increments of 4,096 bytes per sector using a technology referred to as Advanced Format. IDEMA is joined by major hard disk drive manufacturers in the launch and support of the "Are You Ready?" effort. "Are You Ready?" is a comprehensive campaign providing the computing industry with awareness and tools to prepare for the upcoming transition to Advanced Format technology. This includes a Developer Kit program, educational materials, new Wikipedia entries, and a series of exhibits and events in six cities starting with the Microsoft Partner Conference in Washington D.C. (July 11-15). It also includes a logo program to help customers recognize HDDs with Advanced Format capabilities. Comments

An iPhone Class Action Suit Is in the Works
Raise your hand if you didn't see this one coming. The lawsuit will no doubt focus on the holding-it-wrong flawÂ…not the breaks-if-you-drop-it flaw, not the yellow-spots flaw, not the built-from-conflict-materials flaw, not the iPhone-requires-OS-10.5 flaw and definitely not the volume-buttons-are-swapped flaw (those are no doubt coming). Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff, LLP is looking for people who "recently purchased the new iPhone and have experienced poor reception quality, dropped calls and weak signals." That's the same firm that filed a federal class action suit over deceptive "offer" ads in games like Mafia Wars and Farmville. In the case of the fourth-generation iPhone, released last week, the phone shows fewer reception bars if you hold it wrong; Apple has suggested gripping it different. Comments

3.17% of All SSL are Being Used.
SSL or Secure Socket Layer have been used for a variety of different services such as Linux boxes,  FTP servers, even webmail and banking sites. According to research from Qualys, a security research firm, out of 119 million domain names scanned, 92 million were actually active, 12.4 million of the remaining domains failed to resolve properly, and the other 14.6 million gave no response at all. Out of the 92 million active domains, Qualys shows that 34 million domains use both port 80 (typical HTTP port) and port 443 (typical HTTPS/SSL port).
While those numbers do not seem to strike any significant problem, it seems only 23 million actually use SSL. The  cause for concern comes about when discussing SSL certificates. The bigger picture shows that only 3.17% of the 23 million servers have valid certificates. This problem comes from domains generating certificates with the the incorrect domain name. According to Ian Ristic, director of engineering at Qualys:
"We have about 22 million SSL servers with certificates that are completely invalid because they do not match the domain name on which they reside."
Essentially what this all boils down to is many sites that have SSL built in to their infrastructure are not gaining the benefits of the security it adds due to the invalid or improper domain name.
