
Yahoo adds security and workflow management to Hadoop
Yahoo, which has championed the open source Apache Hadoop distributed computing platform, is adding capabilities for Kerberos security and workflow management to the platform.
The company on Tuesday will unveil the open source additions at the Yahoo-sponsored Hadoop Summit 2010 conference in Santa Clara, Calif. and donate them to the Apache Software Foundation.

Rhomobile smartphone app framework adds iPhone-like mapping
Rhomobile is shipping on Tuesday version 2.0 of its Rhodes framework for developing native smartphone applications, which extends Apple iPhone native mapping capabilities to other devices.
Rhodes 2.0 also offers accommodations for back-end applications via a metadata framework. Rhomobile also is offering free licensing. But a previously planned capability for bidirectional streaming of multimedia content has been delayed until a future release.

Apache upgrades Tomcat Web server
Apache Tomcat 7.0, the latest version of the popular open source Java Web server, is available Tuesday from the Apache Software Foundation.
The upgrade constitutes the first major release of the project since 2006. To ease Web framework integration, version 7.0 implements the Java Servlet 3.0, JavaServer Pages 2.2 and Expression Language 2.2 specifications.

Cisco, MobileAccess system boosts in-building cellular signals
Cisco Systems and MobileAccess today announced a system designed to improve in-building cellular signals that uses copper cable integrated into corporate LANs and works alongside Cisco Wi-Fi networks.
The MobileAccess VE system enables users to make voice and data calls from dual-mode smartphones or handsets via Wi-Fi or cellular connections, and it costs about half the price of equipping a building with coaxial or fiber-optic cables, Cisco and MobileAccess officials said.
