Evolyte offers 32GB iPad WiFi for $100 off Â…maybe
If one of the things on your holiday wish list is an iPad, you need to hop over to Evolyte. If you haven't heard of the site before, it's one of the deal sites along the lines of Woot. The company has a deal going right now that could save you as much as $100 off a 32GB iPad. The deal has some conditions though.

Evolyte offers 32GB iPad WiFi for $100 off Â…maybe

It appears that to get the deal the company needs to move enough of them. What you are doing is pre-ordering and the deal has to be "unlocked" before your card is charged and the iPad is ordered. After 50 of the 32GB WiFi iPads are sold, the deal is unlocked and each of them will ship at a $50 discount.
I would assume 1000 of the things need to sell before you get the full $100 off discount. So far, the deal has about four and a half days left to run and 15 of the things have been sold already out of the 50 for the initial discount. That number has doubled from seven this morning so it's looking good to save at least $50 on the thing.

Optoma 3D-XL DLP projector converter box to ship next month
Home theater fans that have multiple 3D sources like cable boxes, Blu-ray players and game consoles might have the need for a converter box that can handle those multiple inputs and shoot them out to a projector. If you are one of these folks a new offering from Optoma called the 3D-XL will ship in December.

Optoma 3D-XL DLP projector converter box to ship next month

The product is called the 3D-XL and the thing is compatible with HDMI 1.4a inputs and supports multiple 3D devices. It can switch between 2D and 3D inputs and only works with DLP projectors. Those projectors donÂ’t have to be the Optoma brand, any DLP projector will work.
The 3D-XL supports 1080p 3D content and uses passive 3D glasses. It ships with one pair of 3D glasses and additional pairs of glasses are about $90. I wondering the glasses that we typically recycle after seeing a 3D flick in the theater will work for the device. The 3D-XL Converter box will sell for $499 at Amazon.

Pure Twilight clock radio has soothing sounds and light
I have never felt the need to have the artificial sound of crickets, waves, or anything else to fall asleep or stay asleep. I really don't need any colored lights to sooth me into dream land either. I guess some folks need that sort of stuff though and if you are one of the Pure has a new audio device for you called the Twilight. The thing might actually be a pretty cool radio for a kids room.

Pure Twilight clock radio has soothing sounds and light

The white dome on top of the radio hides a light that changes between several colors. The light can be white, blue, green, purple, red, or orange. It also has built-in lullabies for kids including ‘twinkle, twinkle, little star’ and ‘rock-a-bye baby’. It also has a built-in FM receiver that will let you listen to your local stations and you can plug in an iPod or MP3 player via the aux input.
The Twilight also has a headphone port for private listening and it has a sleep timer that will turn off the music and the lights when you want I to. The snooze function is activated by touching the white dome and the alarm can wake you up with light as well with a dawn simulation. The Pure Twilight has an accessory for docking your iPhone or iPod and the price for the device is unknown.

Syte Shirt holds your iPhone geek style
If you are a serious geek that likes to show off your geekiness there are all manner of shirts and other clothing items that will do the deed. None of them will mark you as geek as much as the Syte shirt. This black t-shirt has a pocket in the front that you can cram your iPhone or iPod touch into.

Syte Shirt holds your iPhone geek style

The shirt will hold the device in either portrait or landscape modes. The clear pocket will allow you to show the people around you what you are watching, even if you canÂ’t see it yourself. I guess this shirt is sort of like the people that spend money to put screens in the headrests of two seat cars just so the people behind them can see what they are watching.
The shirt is unisex and comes in S-XXL sizes. The small through XL versions are $39.95 each and the XXL size is $44.95. The clear window is dust and water-resistant and you can control the iPhone touchscreen through the clear protector. It appears that the pocket zips shut at the top so you can do cartwheels without worrying the iPhone or iPod will fall out.

Hitachi and partners develop new HDD tech - provides 8-fold density increase
Hitachi along with Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) - a public-sector body that promotes research of energy efficient technology, National University Corporation Tokyo Institute of Technology as well as Kyoto University have together developed a new hard drive data recording technology that has promised to increase data density 8-fold.

Hitachi and partners develop new HDD tech - provides 8-fold density increase

Together they have developed a new patterning tech for the magnetized bits that are laid on the platters - which are only 10nm in size. This new technology is made possible by using new materials, and also the use of a self-arranged phenomenon of polymer materials.
It's practical applications increases areal-density of disk platters to 3.9 Terabits per square inch (!!!) which is an 8 fold increase compared to the current 500 Gigabit standard. This will let loose 24TB HDD's in the near future.
The tears of many storage whores have just run down their cheeks!

Crytek's Cevat Yerli says "PC is easily a generation ahead"
I don't know about "a generation" ahead, as every generation of GPU's is "next-gen", and I would put it at close to 6 - 7 generations ahead in terms of what the consoles can process versus a top of the line PC with multiple GPU's, etc. But, Cevat Yerli from Crytek has stated that PC is a "generation ahead" of current generation consoles and has discussed the impact console development is having on the PC market.

Crytek's Cevat Yerli says

“As long as the current console generation exists,” claims Yerli, “and as long as we keep pushing the PC as well, the more difficult it will be to really get the benefit of both.”
He's right - we do get benefits of both, but for the people spending thousands of dollars on a top of the line PC, they don't really benefit from all of that grunt. But this is simple - the market has shifted toward consoles, this can be turned by any game developer who gears their target toward PC's again.

Russia set to spend $2 billion on cleaning up space

Russia has announced they are planning on spending $2 billion on a craft to clean up around 600 pieces of the space junk.
Space Daily reported that Russia's NASA equivalent Energia plans to build a pod that will float through orbit for 15 years, collecting the old satellites and then head back to Earth. The pod will be nuclear-powered and should be completed by 2020 and set to be fully-operational by 2023 if it all goes to plan.
The new devices plans to add Wall-E on Facebook as a friend.

Zediva streams movies straight from DVD players to your PC
The newest movie streaming startup Zediva has an interesting way of circumventing licensing requirements and other issues that Netflix, Hulu, and other well known streaming services have to deal with. Their process? Offering rental of a DVD player and DVD for a fixed amount of time and then streaming the media to you.

Zediva streams movies straight from DVD players to your PC

According to Zediva founder Venky Srinivasan, “Our users rent a physical DVD, along with a DVD player from us for a fixed amount of time. They then control that DVD player remotely over the internet — and stream the movie privately to themselves. Think of it as a really long cable and a really long remote control.” This workaround allows Zediva to charge lower prices than the competition: $1.99 per movie and ten movies for $10. Movies can also be re-rented for free for up to 14 days. Movies can be rented out just like in any Brick and mortar store.
Zediva only currently has around 40 movies in stock at the moment, but is starting small and working on offering “the top two or three movies of the week.” We’ll see what the copyright law experts have to say about the methods to this madness, but you have to admit it’s creative.

Windows Phone 7 hack allows bypassing of the Marketplace
The Windows Phone 7 device hacks are slowly trickling out regardless of the security measures. A hack released last week allows for direct file transfer to your device via USB, and now a hack has been outed that lets even non developers bypass the Marketplace and “sideload” any app you desire onto a WP7 device.

Windows Phone 7 hack allows bypassing of the Marketplace

The new tool is called Chevron WP7, which is compatible with Windows XP SP2 and up, and unlocks your phone so that you can install apps without going through the Windows Marketplace. For now, Microsoft only allows this function for those with developer access and wouldnÂ’t dream of rolling it out to the general public due to Microsoft not being able to look over or approve sketchy apps. Check out the step by step process at the Source Link.

An iPhone App for your business, just $39 a month?

The company has gotten support from investors to go forth with their plan. At $39 a month, it becomes affordable for a lot of companies that usually wouldn't bother with mobile apps or more specifically the iOS platform.
For $39 a month, no one would expect the most elaborate App - but the pricing is attractive enough to get some air time and will allow people who would never normally think of this type of path for their business - to definitely stop and smell the roses.
Every iPhone App would be custom-made for businesses, then submitted to the App Store for approval, updated regularly with new features and improvements by the people at Bizness Apps.
Features include:
turn-by turn GPS directions
sharing capabilities that work with Facebook, Twitter and email clients
in-app messaging and push notifications
check-in and couponing capabilities
calendering options
and more!
The company makes money from monthly support and maintenance fees, but also offer custom iPhone app development and design services.
Here's a video of how it would work:

Windows Phone 7 Marketplace - 3, 000 apps, attracts 15, 000 developers
Engadget is right - years ago the mobile industry was dominated when it came down to units moved, profits made but now it's future success is defined by the number of apps, games and developers attached to each competing platform.

Windows Phone 7 Marketplace - 3, 000 apps, attracts 15, 000 developers

Nokia last week announced 400, 000 new developers over the last year. Microsoft may only have 15, 000 - but it's quality over quantity, right?
Microsoft have said that having the 15, 000 developers for Windows Phone "signals their intent to bring exciting content to Windows Phone". What I find funny, is what company would say the opposite? "We are bringing 15, 000 developers for things aren't exciting - you won't like them.
Let's hope that they do bring exciting content - I used one of the HTC Mozart handsets last night and it is actually surprising cool. If I didn't have an Android I'd definitely be looking at tapping the Windows Phone 7.
Oh, but it'd need Angry Birds first.

Angry Birds Day! December 11! Something big planned for London
Ah Angry Birds. It now has it's own day. Some sources of TechCrunch have been flung into their offices and said that there's going to be something big happening, specifically in London's Trafalgar Square. Which has supposedly become a big venue to launch big games - especially console games.

Angry Birds Day! December 11! Something big planned for London

There's speculation Angry Birds will get a Windows Phone 7 announcement on the day, there's also speculation that Rovio Mobile will launch a console version or that it will spin out into a movie.
But, there's something else boiling about this... Rovio Mobile has just bought on Peter Vesterbacka as head of business development for North Americ
Peter was the founder of HP Bazaar - HP's skunk works attempt at dominating mobile. He's also the co-founder of Mobile Monday, Mobile 2.0 and several other web and mobility related business ventures. Peter is a believer in open source platforms and believes that games consoles will be disrupted by the Internet and open source.
From here, TechCrunch are saying that all game developers really want is to get their platform out there - also with the rise of sales in virtual goods and in-app payments, who would need console platforms anymore?
A movie, Windows Phone 7 or console version could still come out - but it still remains that something bigger could happen... I'm excited just to get another release with more levels, or the sequel itself!
Now, I just need a way to get to London on the 11th of December...

DRAM pricing set to continue sliding downward into 2011
Memory is already at insanely low prices, but lower prices is not a bad thing, right?

DRAM pricing set to continue sliding downward into 2011

The price of DRAM is set to continue falling throughout the first half of 2011 - the wholesale price of a 2GB DDR3 module has dropped 46 percent since the start of 2010, from around $46.50 to $25 - it could also drop to as low as $20 before the end of the year.
This fall in pricing will continue due to a manufacturers being able to increase output thanks to the use of immersion scanner technology that improves yields in their fabrication plants and the unusually (that's weird) low demand for memory.
This is of course normal, as there is a huge supply of memory but low demand leaks to an excess of supply - which means they have to get rid of it, what does that mean to you and I? Cheaper prices of course.
Into 2011 we should still see cheap memory, which means retailers can bundle more memory in their systems and the price will still be very cheap, netbooks and notebooks also benefit from this too.

HIS Radeon HD 6850 1GB Video Card in Crossfire w/ 960 Shaders Overclocked
Introduction

HIS Radeon HD 6850 1GB Video Card in Crossfire w/ 960 Shaders Overclocked

WeÂ’ve welcomed the new HD 6800 series with open arms and while the HD 6870 might be the faster of the two cards, the HD 6850 represents some great value for money. When we add a second one into the mix we do see that the overall value does dip slightly, but the performance gains are really strong.
While we ran over a few speed humps early on when we looked at the HD 6850, itÂ’s nice to know that itÂ’s smooth sailing from here on out. With the correct 960 Shader HD 6850 already looked at by itself, overclocked and in Crossfire, itÂ’s time to place the last piece into our puzzle.
That is of course the HD 6850 in Crossfire, overclocked! - WeÂ’re not going to go into much detail outside of specifications because weÂ’ve already looked at the HIS HD 6850 before, and weÂ’ve also looked at the HD 6850 in Crossfire at stock speeds earlier this week. Instead weÂ’ll just quickly look at how we overclocked and what we ended up with.

Specifications
Overclocking on the HD 6800 series cards when in Crossfire is a bit of hit and miss. A lot of programs at the moment are having trouble overclocking two cards, which meant that Voltage Adjustment was out for the moment.
Instead we just opted for the Overdrive feature in the Catalyst drivers which while not giving us the most options, does ultimately let us clock both cards and adjust the core clock and memory clock.

HIS Radeon HD 6850 1GB Video Card in Crossfire w/ 960 Shaders Overclocked

Without extra voltage we managed to bump the core clock from 775MHz to 840MHz and the memory went from 4000MHz QDR to 4400MHz QDR. ItÂ’s not a huge overclock, but the inability to add more voltage to the core was going to limit our core overclock. Either way, we should see a nice little performance increase.

StarTech ConvergeAV Triple Head DisplayPort to DVI Multi Monitor Adapter

StarTech ConvergeAV Triple Head DisplayPort to DVI Multi Monitor Adapter

Introduction
One of the things that has returned to popularity over the last few year has been the use of multiple monitors in the home. In business this has been a standard for quite some time. In fact, most of the companies that I have run the IT department for have used multiple monitors (at the very least for their accounting and sales departments). It allows you more room and to also run multiple “full screen” applications at once.
Of course, this is usually talking about dual monitors and not getting into the more extravagant world of triple and quad monitors. The problem is that in many cases unless you want to spend more money to get a GPU like AMDÂ’s Eyefinity and Display Port capable monitors, you are not going to get three or more monitors running. Well, that, as we said, is usually the case anyway.
Recently we happened upon a product that gets around all of that through the use of active video splitting to take the input from a single DisplayPort connection and send it out to three DVI capable monitors. Manufactured by StarTech, the ConvergeAV uses an Active DisplayPort connection to convert the video signal from ANY graphics card into three outputs. The ConvergeAV is not cheap, though; it retails for around $300 when we could find it online. Still, letÂ’s see if this can really do the same job as an Eyefinity setup, or is this just a neat gadget.
