ASUS EAH 6850 DirectCU
Lost Circuits has just posted its review of the ASUS EAH 6850 DirectCU today. You can see our evaluation here for comparison purposes. The EAH 6850 DC is the more balanced card and there is really not that much of a performance delta to claim that one or the other game would be playable with the 6870 but not with the 6850. Add the more conventional port layout for easier configuration of Eyefinity and the EAH6850 DirectCU has all the makings of a winner. Comments

Net Neutrality Quote of the Day
The quote of the day (PDF) is brought to you by the FCC Commissioner Michael Copps. Let's just hope this guy means what he is saying and not just blowing smoke. I suppose you can't blame companies for seeking to protect their own interests. But you can blame policy-makers if we let them get away with it. Deal-making between big Internet players is not policy-making for the common good. Special interests are not the public interest. Stockholders are not the only stakeholders. I will not settle—you should not settle—for gatekeepers of the Internet striking deals that exchange Internet freedom—yours and mine—for bloated profits on their quarterly reports to Wall Street. Texting in Class = The New Doodling
Texting in class has surpassed doodling, daydreaming, napping and note-passing. I guess this isn't so surprising, it's the same old problem, just a different medium. Anyone else have that professor that would say funny stuff like "Laugh all you want, you're the one paying to fail this class" when he'd catch you not paying attention? It's no surprise that high school and college students are obsessive texters. What alarms Wilkes psychology professors Deborah Tindell and Robert Bohlander is how rampant the practice has become during class: Their recent study shows that texting at the school has surpassed doodling, daydreaming and note-passing to become the top classroom distraction. Anti-Piracy Lawyers Sued For Fraud, Abuse and Extortion
It looks like the copyright lawyers are getting a taste of their own medicine. Obviously we do not condone or encourage piracy, we just think it is funny when the tables get turned on the entertainment industry's attack dogs. The US Copyright Group thought it had found the ideal scheme to turn piracy into profit when it started filing lawsuits against tens of thousands of BitTorrent users this year. But the defendants in the Far Cry lawsuits have now become the plaintiffs in a class action filed against the anti-piracy lawyers and their partners. Among other things, the lawyers are accused of fraud, extortion and abuse. Comments

Satellites Spy on Black Friday Shoppers
Satellites are being used to track Black Friday mall traffic? It would seem so. I don't want to steal anyone's thunder by reposting the whole story here so head on over to CNBC for the complete rundown. Here's a quote to get you started: The company at the heart of all this satellite spying on shoppers is called Remote Sensing Metrics, a small, Chicago-based consulting firm that analyzes the satellite imagery and teases out market-moving data from the pictures it sees. Microsoft Downplays Nightmare Flaw
A new exploit allows attackers to bypass UAC and execute code with administrative privileges. The good news, Microsoft says, is that it does not allow remote code execution on its own. So when patch day comes around don't be lazy and keep ignoring it for 4 hours at a time for a week straight. Attackers would have to combine the exploit with other malicious code that takes advantage of another vulnerability on the machine -- not necessarily one in Windows, but in any commonly-installed application, such as Adobe Reader, for example -- to hijack a PC and bypass UAC. There Are Too Many Games
Bioware co-founder says what disappoints him about the industry today is there are too many good games, and it's hard to keep up. When asked what he liked most about the industry, he once again says "all the great games." Well played, I agree it can be sort of a double edged sword. "For us, we have to play our games, play competitor's games, play other relevant games, and play the handful of games we just really want to play more of and finish," he continued. "I try and play two-or three hours a night, but that's hard and it's not enough." Comments

Bad Publicity is a Good Thing
An online retailer has a unique business plan: get a whole mess of complaints to rise up in Google pagerank. Tip: Make sure you research before you buy! "Hello, My name is Stanley with DecorMyEyes.com," the post began. "I just wanted to let you guys know that the more replies you people post, the more business and the more hits and sales I get. My goal is NEGATIVE advertisement." Comments

Kingston HyperX Max 3.0 128GB USB 3 SSD
Need a portable USB 3.0 external SSD? PC Perspective just published a review of the 128GB Kingston HyperX Max 3.0 and it seems as though they liked the drive. Here's a quote from the review: The cast aluminum enclosure was very well made and does an excellent job of protecting the internals, as well as dissipating any heat generated by the Toshiba HG2 controller during sustained write operations. Fit and finish was excellent and the drive performed well in our testing. Comments

Facebook's New Plan for Encrypted User IDs
Facebook has announced a new plan for user IDs. The company plans to put all the user IDs into a huge bingo ball machine and continuously rotate them so that hackers can't get their hand on your unique UID. At least I think that is what they said. In short, this new proposal embeds the UID in a HTTP POST body ensuring that it will not be exposed in any HTTP Referrer header whatsoever (encrypted or otherwise). We do this by creating a element targeted at the application Canvas URL. This change will require minimal effort for developers and addresses the feedback that we have received to date. You can learn more about this change on the POST for Canvas page. Comments
