Oracle's Win Over SAP Means HP CEO Can Stop 'Hiding'
HP's CEO can finally come out of hiding now that the SAP – Oracle trial is over. Then again, he might have to go back into hiding if there is an appeal. You may recall that during the high-profile trial Oracle had attempted to subpoena Apotheker, formerly the top guy at SAP, but neither HP nor Apotheker proved inclined to see him take the stand.Apotheker made himself scarce so as to avoid the jury box, a decision that caused the press much merriment and HP a measure of embarrassment. Google Street View "Birth" Likely Staged
So it turns out that the Google Street View image of a woman giving birth on the sidewalk was likely staged. It was fairly obvious that the scene was staged to begin with but Google added to the mystery by replacing the image with the standard "blurred" one you see below. Comments

Seagate to Pay $1.9M to Former Employee
In the true spirit of giving and the holiday season, Seagate has decided to give $1.9M to a former employee. True, a federal jury had to make the company pay the guy but a couple million bucks sure goes a long way around the holidays. A federal jury this month awarded a former Seagate Technology engineer $1.9 million in a wrongful employment case. Chandramouli Vaidyanathan had sought $2.7 million in damages, contending that he had to uproot his family to take a job at Seagate's Advanced Technology Group facility in Minnesota for a job that didn't exist. USPTO Grants Facebook Trademark on "Face"
You read that right, Facebook now has the trademark on the word "face." I would face palm right here but I am afraid of being sued for unauthorized use of the word "face." Telecommunication services, namely, providing online chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among computer users in the field of general interest and concerning social and entertainment subject matter, none primarily featuring or relating to motoring or to cars. Study: Wealth Dictates Web Use, Tech Adoption
Didn't someone else recently release a study that said the same thingÂ…the more money you have the more likely you are to have / use the internet and other tech devices? Not sure why we need studies to tell us stuff like this, seems pretty obvious. According to Pew Research, 95 percent of Americans living in households with $75,000 or more in annual income are "at least occasionally" likely to access the Web. That figure drops to 70 percent of people in homes with less than $75,000 of annual income. About 57 percent of those with less than $30,000 in annual income use the Internet. Pew also found that 99 percent of people in higher income households access the Internet from home, while 93 percent of those with less income surf the Web from home. Comments

Jury Orders SAP to Pay Oracle $1.3 Billion
After less than a day of deliberations, a federal jury has ordered SAP to pay Oracle a whopping $1.3 billion, the value of the stolen intellectual property. A federal jury on Tuesday ordered SAP AG to pay $1.3 billion to its archenemy, Oracle Corp., for stealing customer-support documents and software in a scheme to siphon off customers. The verdict came after less than a day of deliberations and is devastating for SAP. SAP's entire after-tax profit last year was just over $2 billion. The three-week trial turned into a spectacle involving three of the world's biggest technology companies. Comments

Mobile Users Love Unlimited Data Plans
And the award for the "no duh" survey of the day goes to these guys. Seriously, who doesn't want unlimited data? A survey of more than 800 smartphone users has found that unlimited data plans are their most important preference when making decisions about carriers and devices. The report by the financial research firm Sanford Bernstein found that customers are willing to pay more for the peace of mind of knowing they won't get hit with a huge overage bill. Comments

Do You Really Need Antivirus Software?
After reading the first few paragraphs of this editorial on the need for antivirus software, I've decided that I like the way this guy thinks. But first, let me rant a bit. It's no secret that I dislike the security software industry. In one of my very first posts here, nearly four years ago, I called it a "protection racket" and said, "I can already see the beginnings of an 'arms war' among security software companies, with ads and whisper campaigns based on fear." Back in 2005, I wrote a post arguing, "The security software industry wants you to be afraid." Comments

Rare Apple I Computer Sells for $210,000
An Apple computer that is thousands of times slower than a ten year old PC, sold for two hundred times the average price of a computer today? How is this different from any other Apple computer sold? (*rimshot please*) The Apple I, one of only 200 such models ever made, was sold Tuesday afternoon at Christie's auction house in central London for 133,250 pounds (about $210,000.) Microsoft Embraces First Wave of Kinect Innovation
Microsoft seems legitimately happy that people have taken to modding the Kinect. A Microsoft spokesperson said that, as long as the modding doesn't screw things up for everyone else or violate the company's TOS, the company is cool with it. Good news: after some initial sword rattling, Microsoft has embraced hardware hackers for modifying the Kinect. When asked about Microsoft's stance on hardware hackers putting the Kinect to creative new uses, Shannon Loftis, Studio Manager at Microsoft Game Studios said, "As an experienced creator, I'm very excited to see that people are so inspired that it was less than a week after the Kinect came out before they had started creating and thinking about what they could do." Text 911 in an Emergency?
Being able to text 911 in an emergency? Why is this an issue? It's almost 2011, kinda makes sense that you should be able to text the cops. Right? The Federal Communications Commission wants to bring the 911 emergency service into the 21st century with new technologies such as text messaging and automatic alerts. In a speech Tuesday, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said it "is time to bring 911 into the Digital Age." He said this was important, as more and more people in the United States use cell phones. Text messaging, in particular, is an important feature to add to 911 call centers, he said. Comments

No Big Boost in Blu-ray Disc Drive Penetration
According to the folks at DigiTimes, we won't see the Blu-ray disc drive penetration we saw in 2009 thanks to the current state of the economy. Although the price of the Blu-ray disc (BD) drives has already dropped from US$100 to about US$70-80, market penetration of BD drives in 2010 is unlikely to see strong growth compared to 2009 as the economic downturn in the US and Europe caused notebook brands to delay their adoption of BD drives as a standard specification.
