Kingston HyperX Max 3.0 SuperSpeed SSD Drive Gets Benchmarked

Kingston and their HyperX line is certainly well known in enthusiast circles for being high quality RAM, but when most people think "HyperX", they do NOT think external flash drives. Well, that is about to change, as the all new HyperX MAX 3.0 SuperSpeed SSD drive is not only fast it also boasts a USB 3.0 interface. In a nut shell, Kingston has taken their very fast Toshiba controller based SSDNow V+, stuck it inside a very ...y looking blue aluminum enclosure and added in a Genesys Logic GL3310 USB 3.0 SATA bridge controller to give it plug and play USB capabilities! The end result is a MLC-based USB 3.0 SSD drive capable of hitting speed of up to 195MB/s. Better still, unlike the Super Talent Flash drives we looked at awhile ago, the HyperX MAX 3.0 bad boy should STAY fast as the SSDNow V+'s controller has VERY aggressive self-maintenance routines built in. This last bit is crucial to long term satisfaction. When dealing with NAND Flash based devices (be they internal or external in non-TRIM environments), they will get slow and into a "degraded state" unless their controller keeps its NAND clean, and this is where the Toshiba controller should in theory keep this from happening. The only downside to using all this power in an external SSD is the price it demands. At $351 USD for 128GB model, Kingston HyperX MAX 3.0 is not a cheap drive; then again, other external USB 3.0 SSDs - such as the OCZ Enyo, LaCie FastKey and Iomega SSD - are anything but affordable either. In the end, if you want power and speed, you have to be willing to PAY for it.

Century Japan’s USB 3.0 Card Fits Flush in ExpressCard Slot

USB 3.0 certainly can make life easier for transferring large files to and from your laptop; sadly while the SuperSpeed interface is slowing starting to come standard on some laptops, it is hard to justify replacing a relatively new laptop with an expensive NEW one just to get this one killer new feature. In fact, even a storage junky would be hard-pressed in finding ways to justify that kind of upgrade! Century Japan understands that while this is transient and short term in nature market niche, it is also an relatively untapped potential with only a few companies making USB 3.0 laptop upgrade solutions! This is why they have released their all new CIF-USB3EC34 USB 3.0 ExpressCard adapter. This ExpressCard not only boasts USB 3.0 capabilities via the all new Fresco Logic’s FL1000 controller chip, it also boasts a flush fitting design! This means you can leave it in place without worrying about it getting hooked on something and damaged while not in use. Unfortunately, you wont get the full USB 3.0 speed from this adapter’s loan port as it is limited to half that speed due to inherent ExpressCard bandwidth limitations. Still half of a whole lot of speed is better than ALL of nothing and still MUCH better than USB 2.0! With a price of about $48 (3980 yen) this may just be the perfect way to upgrade your existing laptop without spending a fortune!

Namely, Flash Rods - the company that brought you some funky flash drives also makes one serious piece of memorabilia that is sure to pull on the heart strings of ANY geek! Their Delorean Time Machine not only is a 1:18 scale replica of that awesome time machine, but also is a working 500GB hard drive.
