this day to come, but here it finally is. Apple is today rolling out iOS 4.2 to
iPads and qualifying iPhones (3G, 3GS and 4) and iPod touches (second, third and fourth generation) across the globe, delivering the long-awaited multitasking and app folder enhancements to a tablet that was already supposed to be magical and revolutionary. Verizon bringing 150/35Mbps internet to FiOS customers, enraging customers of all other ISPs
You know, we're pretty stoked for the folks who just so happen to reside within Verizon's relatively minuscule
FiOS service footprint, but rather than hooking up those who've already been adequately hooked, why not spread that fiber cheer over to a few extra states? Alas, it looks as if the FiOS rollout is on
an indefinite hold, but those lucky enough to have access will soon have the ability to upgrade their existing internet service to this: a 150/35Mbps option. That's 150Mbps down and 35Mbps up, and as far as
consumer-grade services in America go, it's pretty much as good as it gets. Verizon is claiming that it'll be available to order by consumers at the end of this year, with small businesses seeing the option shortly thereafter. 'Course, no pricing details are mentioned, but it's not like it matters -- you'll cash in whatever Yuletide gifts you have to in order to get this, right?
Update, Verizon pinged us with a few points -- for starters new speed is available
today to the majority of our FiOS customers in 12 states and the District of Columbia, with more and more to get it in due time. As for pricing? The 150/35 Mbps residential offer will be available to the majority of FiOS-eligible households, and sold as a stand-alone service starting at $194.99 a month when purchased with a one-year service agreement and Verizon wireline voice service. Not exactly a bargain, but like we said, you're still finding a way to make this happen.

curved in a pretty unusual way, and a new photo on Picasa -- on one of the same photostreams where
we've seen "Nexus S" and "GT-i9020" in the EXIF data before -- gives us a new glimpse of the phone at a three-quarter view where we can really see just how curved it is. It's still unclear to us
whether the display is involved in the curving or if it's restricted to the bezel above and below the actual screen, but either way, it's a distinctive design element that's sure to attract a lot of attention. Interestingly, the picture was captured on a Google employee's stream just this weekend, suggesting devices are definitely still out in the field -- so let's hope it launches right alongside Android 2.3 in the next few weeks.

Houston will be home to America's largest car charging network, identity crisis
Everything is
somewhat more gargantuan in Texas, so its only natural that Houston has its eye on having the largest network of
electric vehicle chargers in the country. The plan is a privately funded brain-child of power plant operator NRG Energy, which hopes to install 150 charging stations in the 25 mile vicinity of downtown Houston starting in February. Chargers will be placed at common retail locations such as Walgreens and Best Buy, but given that 80 to 90 percent of charging will occur in homes, an $89 all-you-can-juice monthly plan will also include the installation of 240-volt charging systems in residences. NRG doesn't expect to turn a profit on its $10 million investment for several years, but hopes that taking the proactive step will create a lucrative business in the future as
electric vehicle prices (hopefully) hit the skids. The company also wants to build a similar network in Dallas in early 2011, and perhaps San Antonio and Austin in the future as well. Still, while the plans are admirable for the home of big-oil, compared to London's government-backed
1,300 station plan, NRG's Houston aspirations still seem positively Rhode Island-sized.

talking details on LTE deployment for some time now, but even at CTIA earlier in the year, the carrier insisted that it would be the
first half of 2011 before the next-gen network was active in the US of A. Now, it looks as if the engineers have been working triple-time in order to get Long Term Evolution live in the States under Big Red's branding, as a new VZW commercial (embedded after the break) has affirmed that the first LTE waves will go public here in December 2010. Yeah,
next month. Granted, there's no information beyond the date, but at least we shouldn't have to ponder long which devices will be first out of the gate. Here's hoping Santa's wish list has room for one more thing.

We'd been sort of hoping Apple would just make
MobileMe a completely free service, but it looks like we're taking baby steps instead:
Find My iPhone / iPad is now free for iPhone 4, the iPad, and the fourth-gen iPod touch running
iOS 4.2.1. As with the paid feature, you'll be able to locate your device on a map, lock it, display a message, play a sound, or remotely wipe your data from any browser or the
updated iOS app, which should presumably go live sometime today

Netflix formally launches $7.99 streaming-only plan, bumps unlimited DVD plans by a buck or more
Well you had to know it was coming: the streaming-only plan Netflix
unofficially rolled out last month is now being officially deployed. Thankfully the company opted to go with the lower of the two prices it was toying with, $7.99, which pits it squarely against
Hulu Plus. However, the prices for all unlimited plans that include DVDs have jumped by at least one dollar, meaning you'll now be paying $9.99 for a one DVD at a time plan (though the $4.99, two DVDs a month offer will still give you a penny back from your Lincoln). So, it's a cheaper option for trailblazers who have abandoned physical media and a dark day for everyone else.

iOS 4.2 review (for iPad)
If you're an iPad owner, you've probably been on pins and needles lately. That's because back in September, Apple
announced that a full-scale update to the tablet's OS would be coming in the form of
iOS 4.2, bringing a slew of new features to the device. Included in that laundry list is proper iOS 4-style multitasking, folders, major mail improvements, Game Center integration, and Safari enhancements (like find-in-page text searches). Besides those features, the company has been touting two other big changes that could cause a major shift in the way you use your iPad -- namely, AirPrint and AirPlay. Both additions leverage your WiFi network, certain connected printers, and the new Apple TV in an attempt to make the company's slate less like a distraction and more like the center of your digital life.
When the update was originally announced, we took you on
a walkthrough of the early developer beta. Though 4.2 will roll out to the iPhone and iPod touch, we wanted to focus on the iPad version, as it represents a major change for the platform. We've had a chance to spend time with the final version of the OS (which is actually 4.2.1 now), and put it through its paces. TiVo Premiere UI gets a shot in the arm with iPad remote control
TiVo Premiere users won't have to be jealous of
Comcast's Xfinity TV remote for very long -- soon enough, they'll have an DVR-scheduling, content-searching, program-pushing iPad app of their own. Called the TiVo Premiere App, it'll feature a full touchscreen TV programming guide, playback controls, and the ability to search Netflix and Amazon on Demand for shows when it arrives "in the coming weeks." There's also basic social network sharing via Facebook and Twitter, and if that "Livingroom TiVo" drop-down menu is any indication, the ability to control multiple TiVo boxes from a single tablet. Also, the search box and remote icons in the upper-right hand corner that suggests that TiVo's integrated the iPad keyboard and some virtual buttons too, so maybe you'll be able to exercise control over the entire experience without diving into your couch (or your pocketbook) for a
TiVo Slide Remote. One can only hope. No word on smartphone versions, though. PR and another shot of the interface right after the break.

Orange and T-Mobile set to offer 3G iPad on contract in UK, £200 price rumored
Orange has just dropped a rather enigmatic note in our inbox letting us know that it plans to offer Apple's 3G
iPad on "one of [its] great new plans" in the UK, resulting in what the company promises will be "more affordable prices." Current rumors making the rounds place that expenditure at the £200 ($320) mark, should you be willing to commit to a two-year data plan to go with your 10-inch tablet. It's also expected that Orange's new
dance partner, T-Mobile, will be making a similar announcement soon, complete with a matching price. We'll keep digging until we know for sure. Full PR after the break.

Kingston unveils HyperX Max 3.0, a SuperSpeed SSD for your pocket, we tear it down (video)
USB 3.0 and
SSDs, they were just made for each other, don't you think? Kingston certainly seems to agree, as it's now rolled out its first SuperSpeed portable solid state drive, giving it the catchy title of HyperX Max 3.0. It fits within the dimensions of a conventional 2.5-inch hard drive, but differs in being able to pump 195MB of data per second when reading or 160MBps when writing. Although pricing and availability details aren't yet available, we can expect 64GB, 128GB and 256GB varieties to crop up some time soonish. Apple reportedly abandons supposed push for integrated SIMs in theoretical European iPhones
This one was all rather rumory to begin with, but play along if you don't mind a pile of unconfirmed reports to start the day. A few weeks back it was said that
Apple was
working with Gemalto to create a non-removable, software-reconfigurable SIM that would be built right into European iPhones, saving a number of headaches for users and, more importantly, for Apple. This decidedly unconfirmed report was supposedly enough to get European carriers all worked up in a tizzy, angry that, among other things, customers would never need to actually interact with those carriers themselves -- all actions, including activation, could be handled right through the
App Store. Now, for the final layer of unconfirmed reporting in this delectably speculative layer cake, we have word from
The Daily Telegraph that Apple has apparently given up on this plan and will continue to ship hardware to Europe with honest to gosh SIM cards, just like it always has. In other words: carry on, nothing to see here.

Viacom drops the ban hammer on Google TV devices, blocks streaming episodes
We have high hopes that
Google TV will evolve into something magical and wondrous over the next year or so as its namesake adds apps and features to flesh out the platform's somewhat underwhelming current state. Today, though, it just got a little less attractive thanks to a move by
Viacom to block full episodes from streaming on your Logitech
Revues and your Sony
Internet TVs and the like. We've confirmed with our own Revue that attempting to stream episodes from network sites like MTV, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central show messages like "this content is not available for your device," which is an unfortunate and frustrating change. Yes, the
user agent tweak still works, but wouldn't it be nice if we could all just get along? Surely Google is still working on its content partnership agreements and hopefully things will improve in the future, but given how friendly the company's
past dealings with Viacom have been we're not optimistic about this particular front.

The Daily: Murdoch's iPad newspaper is like 'The New York Post Goes to College'

Women's Wear Daily yet the publication seems to have scooped Rupert Murdoch's plans for a
tablet-only newspaper called
The Daily -- news now seemingly confirmed by the
New York Times. Scheduled for release early next year,
The Daily is expected to cost 99 cents per week (about $4.25 per month) for an electronic paper published seven days a week by a 100-member strong newsroom staffed with "twentysomething" talent led by a former managing editor from the
New York Post. According to the sources speaking to
WWD, It'll be written with the "sensibilities" of a tabloid and the intelligence of a broadsheet focusing on national news. In other words, it's said to be like "The
New York Post Goes to College." A beta is expected by Christmas before hitting the iPad "and other tablet devices" sometime in early 2011.

Autonomous Audi TTS scales Pikes Peak in 27-minute climb
They said they'd do it, and by golly, it's been done -- a specially-equipped Audi TTS drove the entire 12.42 miles and 156 precarious turns of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb without a driver at the wheel. (
Google, eat your heart out.) While the vehicle technically performed the feat about a month ago in September, Audi decided to wait until this last week to proclaim it to the world, following a helicopter accident during filming that sent pilot Jim Dirker to the hospital. Thankfully, he survived to fly another day, and at least some of the footage pulled through as well; you'll find a brief clip after the break of the shiny white Quattro autonomously speeding up that hill.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: slim skyscrapers, electric vehicles and the machine that lays brick roads
Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.
It's been a monumental week for green transportation as team Inhabitat hit the
Los Angeles Auto Show to scope out the hottest up-and-coming eco vehicles - including the
winner of the 2011 Green Car of the Year award, the Chevy Volt! We were also blown away the
UK's first all-electric supercar while Honda announced plans to produce an
all-electric version of its city-friendly Fit. Of course, clean green vehicles require a steady source of renewable fuel - which is where we were excited to see

London announced plans to install 1,300 charging stations and
Singapore fired up the world's largest biodiesel plant.
This week we also looked at several amazing upgrades to our built environment, starting with the
Tiger-Stone - an automatic brick laying machine that rolls out roads like carpet. Meanwhile researchers revealed a new way to
repair our crumbling concrete infrastructure using genetically modified bacteria, and Taiwan unveiled plans for several futuristic skyscrapers that are
wrapped in greenery and
powered by the sun.

Palm webOS 'Enyo' framework paves the way for tablets and larger phones (video)
Don't expect HP's
webOS 2.0 to be
tied to an HVGA screen for long -- come "early 2011," the company will introduce a number of "really interesting new form factors," including
tablets and
phones. That was the message driven home at Palm's Developer Day this year, according to
PreCentral's Dieter Bohn, and the software that's going to make that shift possible is a little something called Enyo. Picking up where Ares left off, Enyo is a Javascript app framework with native hardware acceleration and faster app load times (they're allegedly down to one second now), but the part we think you'll be most interested in is the promise of apps that natively scale to multiple aspect ratios. HP's Scott Miles demoed it earlier this week by playing around with a tiny, single-pane portrait email application in the desktop version of Chrome... and then maximized the browser window to reveal a fully-functioning three-pane landscape layout suited for a large tablet screen. Representatives stressed that the email app was a proof of concept, but Enyo's here to stay, replacing the earlier Mojo starting in 2011 and slated to be available in early 2011 via developer SDK. Switched On: Getting from Kno to yes, part 2
Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.
The
last Switched On introduced the opportunity of the
Kno tablet, which is in transition from having a large hardware footprint to having a large customer footprint. Without question, the Kno hardware is an outlier, but could be simply a first salvo in a battle for digital textbooks that will take years to play out.
Look at the ironic development of e-readers. Today's LCD-based
Nook Color would not exist if Sony and Amazon had not opened (and soothed) consumers' eyes with e-paper-based readers that were themselves an answer to an early generation of LCD-based products like the Rocket e-Book. The outlier shows the potential.

IdeaPad U110 has Lenovo's consumer line been home to a really striking laptop, but the U260's leather-like palmrest, magnesium-aluminum alloy lid and bottom cover change all that. We got a chance to check out the new 12.5-inch laptop a few days ago, and came away seriously impressed with not only its contrasting black and brown aesthetic but its build quality. The entire .7-inch thick frame feels solid and the curved keys, which are similar to those on the U160, are especially delightful. Unfortunately, the model we got to see didn't have the glass trackpad that we've heard about, but our review unit should be here sometime soon. Until we get to put the system's Core i3-380UM processor and 4GB of RAM to the test, hit the gallery below for a few hands-on pictures of it

Jolibook now on sale in the UK, first batch of orders ships Monday
Looks like Jolicloud knows how to keep a product under wraps -- just ten days after
revealing the Jolibook to the world, it's already on sale at a pair of e-tailers. Yes, it's just a netbook, and a fairly standard one at that -- you can cross the 10.1-inch WSVGA screen, Intel GMA 3150 graphics, 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive and 0.3 megapixel webcam right off your laundry list. But it does have the instant-on Jolicloud 1.1 OS on board, and a dual-core 1.5GHz Atom N550 processor to power through basic tasks, and for
a confirmed £279 (about $443) it would also seem to have a price to match. Find it Vye or Amazon UK if you're already sold, and expect to actually receive it before long -- founder Tariq Krim tweets that orders placed this weekend will ship out Monday morning.

Sony Ericsson CEO suggests February reveal, perhaps the PlayStation Phone?
Plausible deniability seems to be Sony's strategy when it comes to the
PlayStation Phone, and that apparently goes for Sony Ericsson as well -- once again, without actually confirming the existence of the Android-based gaming handset, its manufacturer is hinting strongly at an impending reveal. "There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere," CEO Bert Nordberg told the
Wall Street Journal, adding that some sort of new Sony Ericsson product will be unveiled at
Mobile World Congress this February. While that particular item could easily be the 4.3-inch
Anzu slate rather than a PlayStation slider phone, the chief executive didn't seem to shy away from video games in a series of additional quotes. "I haven't dug into that history, but the future might be brighter," he said when asked why the company didn't make a PlayStation Phone years ago, and later suggested that gaming might be the ticket to help SE diversify its offerings. "Sony is of course a very strong brand, and why shouldn't we use that?" he asked the
Journal. We can't think of a single compelling reason, Mr. Nordberg. Bring on the games.
