Apple Passes RIM for Fourth Largest Phone Maker in the World
Sure, people scoffed at Steve Jobs' claims that Apple would sell ten million iPhones in its first year of existence. Well, now Apple is selling a bit over ten million iPhones every three months. That enables Apple to surpass Research In Motion for fourth largest phone maker in the world. According to the latest IDC numbers for the third quarter of this year, Apple sells 14.1 million iPhones every three months and firmly moves it into fourth place on the Top 5 list of phone makers globally. This marks the first time Sony Ericsson has been pushed off the list since 2004 when IDC first started tracking sales figures. Another interesting bit is that market leader Nokia has suffered a drop in sales compared to this time last year. Last year Nokia had 36.5% of the overall market share while this year it is only at 32.4%. It isn't much of a drop but it is a drop nonetheless. LG also suffered a drop, from 10.1% to 8.3%, during that same time. If you're wondering, Samsung is number two with 21% share of the market, LG is three at 8.3%, while Apple has 4.1%, and RIM has 3.6%. All other phone makers account for the remaining 30.5% of the market share.

EVGA Taking You to the Skies With Their Latest Promotion
EVGA is currently having a promotion of a lifetime that will take you to the wild blue yonder. The promotion is two fold, first you have the opportunity to apply to test drive a GTS 450 for 30 days. EVGA will send you the card to test drive but you will have to put up $65 for collateral. After the 30 days is up you have two choices: you can ship the card back if you are unsatisfied and EVGA will return your collateral you put up as well as the return shipping, or you can keep the shiny new card and EVGA will keep your 65 bucks. Not a bad deal for a GTS 450 considering they are running $130+ online currently.
In addition to entering to test drive the card you can also enter to win a ride in a fighter jet. "Three lucky people will have the chance to experience the thrill of a lifetime by riding in an L-39 'Albatros' jet with an aerobatic instructor! Winners will be able to experience speeds of over 400 knots (750km/h, 460mph) while doing maneuvers only fighter pilots experience. Looking out of the cockpit you will see the entire sky, not just a small portal you're used to in commercial flights."
Here is how it works:
- Sign up at EVGA and indicate that you are interested in trying out an EVGA GTS 450 and if you want to enter the contest
- If you are selected, you will need to put $65.00 (USD) of the value as collateral

The Ultimate Cost of Technology, Workers in China Poisoned By Touchscreens
In what seems like the ultimate cost associated with the high end technology we have all been accustomed to, new reports from an Australian Broadcasting Company show workers are being poisoned. The workers are being exposed to a chemical called n-Hexane which is used in the formulation of glues used in products. Short term exposure to the chemical is relatively mild with effects such as mild euphoria, followed by somnolence with headaches and nausea, however long term exposure causes damage to the central nervous system and even death in some cases. The most recent cases of n-Hexane exposure come from a WinTek Corporation plant in China where the workers were manufacturing iPhone hardware. The company says it is paying for the hospital bills associated with the exposure and removed the chemical from the production lines.

ASUS Lays Out Tablet Plans
ASUS has just laid out its plans on what tablets it will be bringing to market. Company president Jerry Shen has revealed details on what sizes the tablets will be and what hardware will be powering what. Starting this December, ASUS plans to launch tablets in the 7, 9, 10, and 12 inch form factors which means there will be a tablet for just about anyone who wants one. The 12 inch model will be running Windows and will be powered by an Intel chip, though which one exactly wasn't mentioned. That tablet will launch in January while Shen said Microsoft was helping to get Windows to be more touch-friendly for the device. March will see the launch of two 7 inch tablets and two 9 inch tablets. One of the 7 inch tablets will have WiFi while the other will have 3.5G and phone functionality. One of the 9 inch models will be an ARM-based Tegra 2 unit running Android while the other 9 inch will be powered by Intel and come with Windows. The 10 inch model was purportedly leaked the other day and that will be running Android with a Tegra 2 chip powering it, but that model was not mentioned today. In any case, ASUS is planning on getting an assortment of tablets into the market soon and I am sure we will see more of these models at CES in January.

Possible Images of Nvidia's GTX 580 Surfaces, Could They Be Real??
A couple of images have been popping up on the net today. They are originating from a Chinese site called PC In Life that posted them claiming that these are the pictures of the upcoming flagship card that will be based on the GF110 GPU. Not much information exists at the moment on the GTX 500 series other than that it is confirmed to be in the future, and this surely does not give us any more insight either. From what can be told by the pictures there are 2 DVI connections as well as an HDMI connection, as well as the same type of cooler that we have seen on other NVidia cards with modifications to the design aesthetics. There is no way to see the power connectors so there is no way of knowing if it will use the 8x6 power plugs as the GTX 480 uses or maybe 8x8. While the photos look as if they are pictures of an actual card, there is no actual proof that this is the GTX 580 or some un-released design of a card currently on the market. None the less this does look like a sweet card and it gets my interested peaked.

New Critical Vulnerability for Adobe Software
Another security flaw has been found in Adobe's software affecting users that open a PDF file with Flash content on it. Adobe Flash Player 10.1.85.3 and earlier, Adobe Flash Player 10.1.95.2 and earlier for the Android OS, Adobe Reader 9.X, and Adobe Acrobat 9.X are all affected by this virus. This vulnerability affects Windows, OS X, Linux, Solaris, and Flash Player for Android. A patch for this issue is being worked on and will arrive November 9 for Adobe Flash Player and November 15 for Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat. Version 8 of Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat are confirmed not to have this vulnerability. For those wanting to take the extra step to defend themselves against an attacker, there is a workaround by deleting or altering the authplay.dll file in Adobe Reader or Acrobat.

Resident Evil Creator's Studio Joins ZeniMax Media
Resident Evil is one of the most popular game franchises in recent memory. Its creator, Shinji Mikami, formed a new studio called Tango Gameworks back in March of this year. Now his studio has joined with ZeniMax Media which is home to Bethesda and id Software. In an announcement made this morning, ZeniMax stated that Mikami's studio will develop games under the Bethesda name while he will be in charge of Tango Gameworks business operations. He will also serve as the creative lead on any games developed by the studio. It is possible that his next game will use id Tech 5, which ZeniMax made clear will be used in more games than just Rage. When Mikami announced his new studio he went on to say he would love to make a 3D zombie game, so if that is indeed the direction taken and id Tech 5 is the engine running it, it would have the potential to be an amazing game. Provided that is the first game made by Tango Gameworks since Bethesda and ZeniMax will have the final say in what is made, but one can hope.

OCZ Launches The RevoDrive X2 PCI-Express SSD
As I am sure we have all seen by now OCZ stirred up the solid state market when they released the first bootable PCI-Express drive with the RevoDrive series. This design allowed the user to run faster than the limitations of the SATA II 3.0Gbps speeds giving us blazing performance. The RevoDrive had capacities up to 480GB with read speeds topping out at 540MB/s and write speeds up to 480MB/s. Now OCZ is upping the ante with the announcement of the RevoDrive X2. This version now employs four onboard SSD's, each with their own SandForce SF-1200 series controller in the same RAID-0 format for blistering speeds. The X2 boasts write speeds up to 720MB/s and read speeds up to an amazing 740MB/s in capacities from 100GB to a whopping 960GB. That is almost a full Terabyte of high performance SSD storage. It would be interesting to see the newer RevoDrive X2 paired up against four high end standard SSD's in a head to head battle. For more information check out the OCZ product page.
