Fortune: Verizon iPhone On Tap For January
To say it's the most anticipated gadget of the year would be selling things short. It's easily the most anticipated of the decade, maybe more. We cannot recall a fantasy gadget that more people have harped on and asked about for a longer period of time, and according to an emerging report from Fortune, it's coming soon. It's the Verizon iPhone, of course. There have been rumors in the past that an announcement was coming, and for one reason or another, it has never officially come. Many assume that things are

Sprint CEO Happy With iPad, Says Helps Overdrive Sales
Sprint thanking Apple for making the iPad? That's something you probably didn't see coming. Sprint is one of the two major U.S. carriers that have no real ties to the iPad. Verizon Wireless just started offering the Wi-Fi version along with a VZW MiFi, and AT&T has an integrated 3G version. So why would Sprint be thankful for the iPad's invention? According to a recent interview with GigaOM, Sprint's CEO recently expressed his gratitude for the iPad, saying that it has been largely responsible for a surge

Redbox Confirms That Streaming Option Will Come In 2011
Redbox is known as the DVD kiosk company. It's the company that has taken the world by storm by placing a seemingly endless amount of red DVD rental boxes in grocery stores, supermarkets and Walmart locations. They have most likely led to the further decline of Blockbuster sales, and they're arguably quicker and better than Netflix when it comes to need-it-now rentals. Netflix still has a much wider array of DVD choices, but you have to wait on the mail to deliver it; Redbox generally has a lot of newer releases,

Microsoft's Original Love Of IE6 Crippling Business Migration

The decrepit browser's grip on the corporate sector is so strong that Redmond has found itself in the embarrassing position of having to beg ask its customers to stop using its own product. Despite entreaties from MS, security firms, and world+dog, businesses have been slow to move to a new browser. In the past, this was typically explained by referencing

Oracle Accuses Google of Stealing Code

Microsoft's Original Love Of IE6 Crippling Business Migration
Ah, IE6. Over the past decade it's transitioned from its position as Microsoft's Playmate to Microsoft's ancient, wheezing, colostomy-bag-holding mother-in-law. The decrepit browser's grip on the corporate sector is so strong that Redmond has found itself in the embarrassing position of having to Some of you may recall that MS put a huge push on its then-new browser as the 'right' choice for businesses and consumers alike. Business software development cycles being what they are, a lot of those venerable web apps are still around. Silver's report claims that an estimated one in five businesses will either take longer migrating to Windows 7 or end up spending significantly more than what they budgeted for the transition. Compatibility problems may be the single largest issue holding things up. Gartner reports an estimated 40 percent of all the businesses running IE6 have apps that won't run under Windows 7 and IE8. "Microsoft needs to explore all avenues that could ease the transitions away from IE6," Silver said. "Microsoft must do more to help organizations with their IE6 problems that Microsoft helped cause."
License To...Run A Crappy Browser?
There's an interesting, if puzzling, wrinkle to this situation. In addition to its full line of OS virtualization products, Microsoft also maintains an application virtualization product, nicknamed App-V. The product website states that App-V "Enable

App-V sounds like exactly what businesses need, but there's a problem. Because Windows XP and IE are so tightly integrated, Microsoft doesn't consider it to be a stand-alone application. According to a letter MS sent out to customers (linked on Gartner's blog), using App-V to emulate IE6 is not allowed.
Microsoft does not support the use of Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) or similar third-party application virtualization products to virtualize IE6 as an “application†enabling multiple versions of Internet Explorer on a single operating system. These unsupported approaches may potentially stop working when customers patch or update the underlying operating system, introducing technical incompatibilities and business continuity issues. In addition, the terms under which Windows and IE6 are licensed do not permit IE6 application virtualization. Microsoft supports and licenses IE6 only for use as part of the Windows operating system, not as a standalone application. On the one hand, Microsoft's decision to pat companies on the head and say "Sorry. Our bad," is a lousy way to do business. If Gartner is right, MS will take a revenue hit for this compared to what it might've earned, although we don't think Redmond is exactly hurting for money. On the other hand, businesses, employees, and consumers could both benefit from this over the long term. Rewritten applications could improve intra-business functionality, close security flaws innate to IE6, and could be written to conform to web standards rather than being shoehorned into IE6's broken rendering scheme.Â

Film Videos In 3D For Under $250 With Viewsonic's 3DV5
Viewsonic has gone supersonic when it comes to offering new 3D gizmos. On Thursday the company announced a budget-priced 720p camcorder that let's consumers film their own 3D movies. The ViewSonic 3DV5 lists for about $240.The company's 3D camera had been a rumor right before the massive IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin in September. But then Viewsonic distracted the public with a massive unleashing of new goodies including its Android tablets, its 3D projector, and -- two weeks ago - its second 3D monitor complete with glasses.
The 3DV5 camcorder features an "autosterescopic" 2.4†screen, which means you don't need to use 3D glasses to get the effect when watching the movie playback onscreen. We think you'd go blind trying to watch a 3D movie for more than a few seconds on a 2.4-inch screen, but that's not much of a problem. A pair of 3D anaglyph glasses (the kind with two different lenses) are included, too. With these glasses, users can upload 3D movies to places like YouTube's 3D section and watch them on a 2D display.

True, the 3DV5 camera isn't a double-lensed 3D camcorder, such the DXG's 5D7V, released last summer and billed as the very first pocket 3D camcorder. But the 5D7V costs more than double, at $600, albeit that price includes a 7-inch autosterescopic-screened media player and the camera itself has 128MB internal memory, a 3.2-inch LCD display and other comparatively better specs.
For the price, the 3DV5 is appealing.
ViewSonic launches new 3D 720p camcorder that helps anyone create their own 3D movies
28 October 2010, London, UK – To address the difficulty that many are facing in creating their own 3D content, ViewSonic has announced the launch of its easy-to-use 3D HD camcorder. With an estimated SRP of only £150, the ViewSonic 3DV5 makes it easy for anyone to record their own 3D movies and watch them back on their 3D-ready TV, monitor or projector.
The ViewSonic 3DV5 is simple to use, featuring a one-touch recording function and the ability to quickly switch between 2D and 3D recording modes. Once users have recorded their content, then they can either plug the camcorder into their computer via USB, or plug it directly into a 3D TV using the included HDMI cable. There is also the option to watch the content in 3D on the device, without the need for 3D glasses, thanks to the built-in ‘autosterescopic’ display. Videos can also be uploaded directly to YouTube’s 3D channel and watched in 3D using the supplied ‘anaglyph’ glasses, even if using a standard 2D display. Â
"Everyone has watched 3D movies at the cinema, and lots of people are considering purchasing a 3D compatible display, whether a TV, monitor or projector. However, there is a lack of available 3D content, and people want to create 3D content that they will be able to watch for years to come," says James Coulson, European product marketing manager, ViewSonic. “The ViewSonic 3DV5 makes it easy for anyone to create future-proof, high quality 3D home movies and also shoot in standard 2D. As well as being easy to use, the camcorder is also excellent value for money, and will make a great gift this Christmas.â€
The ViewSonic 3DV5 features an autosterescopic 2.4†screen, as well as a Li-Ion battery which can be charged via USB. The camcorder is able to film content in MP4 format at HD 720p resolution, and can also take still images. There is 10MB of internal memory, which can be increased using an SD card.Â
Pricing and availability
The ViewSonic 3DV5 will be available from approved resellers in October 2010. Pricing will be subject to the supplier’s method of sale, but the SRP is estimated to be approximately £150 Inc Vat.

Oracle Accuses Google of Stealing Code
"The infringed elements of Oracle America's copyrighted work include Java method and class names, definitions, organizations, and parameters; the structure, organization, and content of Java class libraries; and the content and organization of Java's documentation," Oracle complains.
"In at least several instances, Android computer program code also was directly copied from copyrighted Oracle America code," Oracle goes on to accuse.
Here's what at stake. Android developers code their apps in Java, which are then run in Google's custom virtual machine (VM) called Dalvik. Dalvik is a critical part of Android, and if Oracle were to get the injunction it's requesting, many Android phones on the market would have to be pulled.
Google so far hasn't responded to the amended complaint, though in the past has referred to the allegations as a "baseless" attack, not only on Google, but on the open-source community as a whole.
"This action is not against Android per se but against any Java development not sanctioned by Oracle," said Kent Walker, general counsel of Google. "The lawsuit is trying to put the genie back in the bottle."

OCZ Introduces RevoDrive X2 PCI-Express SSD With Improved Performance
Last month, we were able to take an early peek at a new, amazing device from the labs of OCZ. Earlier in the year, we found that their RevoDrive PCI-Express-based SSD was one of the fastest desktop storage solutions on the market, but OCZ is always pushing the envelope. And that means leapfrogging their own products quite frequently.
The RevoDrive X2 is the follow-up device to the original RevoDrive, and yes, both have debuted in the same year. That's just how quick technology is advancing these days. The new RevoDrive X2 hasn't changed much; it still plugs into a PCIe slot and provides between 100GB and 960GB of pure Flash storage. The changes are notable, however.
It has four SandForce-1200 SSD controllers (as opposed to just two on the original), and the performance potential is far greater. The earlier model topped out below 600MB/s, but this model offers up to 740MB/s and up to 120,000 IOPS. It uses an onboard RAID 0 configuration and is available now, but OCZ hasn't made pricing public yet.
OCZ TECHNOLOGY LAUNCHES ‘REVODRIVE X2,’ A SECOND GENERATION, BOOTABLE PCI-EXPRESS SOLID STATE DRIVE FOR THE HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING MARKET
New PCIe SSD Product Delivers Both Faster Speed and Increased Capacity for High-Performance Computing Applications
Â
SAN JOSE, CA—October 28, 2010—OCZ Technology Group, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCZ), a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) and memory modules for computing devices and systems, announces the launch of The RevoDrive X2 PCI-Express SSD, a follow-up to the successful launch of the first RevoDrive, with increased performance and capacity to serve high-performance computing consumers. The RevoDrive X2 upgrades the original architecture to deliver unprecedented speed up to 740MB/s and up to 120,000 IOPS, nearly triple the throughput of other high-end SATA-based solutions with a substantial reduction in the total cost of ownership (TCO) to the consumer. The product is available now through OCZ’s global channel.
“The original OCZ RevoDrive SSD was designed to be the first high-performance, bootable PCIe SSD solution and has become a popular choice for demanding computing applications that require faster, more reliable storage,†said Ryan Petersen, CEO of OCZ Technology. “Building on the success of the original design, we are excited to introduce the RevoDrive X2, which delivers both increased performance and capacity, making the RevoDrive X2 a viable option for a wide spectrum of applications that include professional graphic design, multimedia rendering, and workstations. With our recently announced new state-of-the-art SSD manufacturing facility in Taiwan, OCZ will continue to be at the forefront of developing and deploying game-changing solid state storage solutions.â€
The RevoDrive family gets its edge by eliminating the SATA II (3Gbps) bottleneck and leveraging a PCIe x4 interface to exploit the full potential of current flash technology. Like the original RevoDrive, the X2 uses an onboard RAID 0 design, but it also employs four SandForce-1200 controllers versus two in the original to maximize data access and bandwidth. In addition to promoting a faster, more responsive PC experience, the RevoDrive X2 is bootable, unlike competing PCIe solutions, to ensure quicker start-ups and load times compared to mechanical hard drives, a major plus for workstation PCs. The RevoDrive X2 thrives in a wide range of computing environments including demanding database and server applications as well as multi-media creation and management. Available in 100GB to 960GB capacities, the OCZ RevoDrive X2 provides ample room for data warehousing, applications, multimedia files, and operating systems. Additionally, the X2 provides the superior durability, energy efficiency, and reliability of SSDs.Â

Nintendo Has No Plans To Cut Wii Pricing By Christmas
Nintendo just experienced their first down quarter in quite some time. Even through 2009, a rough year by nearly any standard, Nintendo managed to pull in profits. Gaming was on the rise as people remained home for entertainment, but it looks like reality is sinking in. Nintendo probably didn't expect to simply ride the Wii popularity wave forever, but they're definitely feeling the pinch now. And with the 3DS delayed, their next major console won't provide a financial boost for some time to come.
One quick way for companies to get an injection of funding is to cut prices on existing products. Nintendo has lowered the Wii pricing once, from $249 to $199, and usually companies lower these console prices just prior to the holiday shopping season. But not this year, not for the Wii. The wii console definitely isn't being demanding as much as it once was, but Nintendo's president recently stated that his company wouldn't be cutting the asking price of the Wii ahead of Christmas. Instead, they will "focus on limited deals in cooperation with retailers and special packages that add game software or other products to give buyers a feeling of a discount."
Bundle deals aren't a new concept, but it's probably not great for consumers is this mindset becomes a popular one. Satoru Iwata stated: "Of course, we cannot say it will never happen, but we are not thinking of it for the near future." He was responding to questions on a near-term price cut for the Wii. He continued: "Those who really wanted it would have already bought it so now we need to reach those who considered it but never got around to buying it."
That's probably right. But even still, price drops get people talking, and it's definitely a risky move to go into another Christmas with the Wii having the same price point. We guess next quarter's earnings will show if this was a smart move or not.

Socket 775 Motherboard Recommendation
My fiance's motherboard lost another on-board item today, the sound card. Normally, I'd just pick up a sound card and slap it in, but the on-board video went a few months ago as well.. I've also had to replace the CD/DVD Writer and the PSU in the past 2 years. So I figure it's a sign that the MOBO is going.
The processor is a Q6600 and the RAM is DDR2 and there is no reason to change those. I went looking at Socket 775 boards and which Southbridge I should look at since there are 6 different ones. I pretty sure that one of the ICH10 versions is the way to go, but would just like confirmation.

"The digital distribution trend is undeniably gaining momentum, and we here at PlayStation are committed to providing you with the hardware you need to support as much downloadable media as possible," Sony stated in a blog post. "The 320GB PS3 system, which will retail for $349.99, has the largest storage capacity of any next-gen console and will continue to provide the same high-quality gaming that PlayStation fans have come to expect. For only $50 more, you get twice the storage capacity of the 160GB system."
$350 is a serious investment for a standalone console, though Sony makes a good point about the doubling of capacity for $50. That's great for digital packrats, but won't come as much consolation to those who simply want to game without spending several hundred dollars.
What are your thoughts on this? Would you be wiling to pay $350 for a 320GB PS3?

Redbox Confirms That Streaming Option Will Come In 2011
Redbox is known as the DVD kiosk company. It's the company that has taken the world by storm by placing a seemingly endless amount of red DVD rental boxes in grocery stores, supermarkets and Walmart locations. They have most likely led to the further decline of Blockbuster sales, and they're arguably quicker and better than Netflix when it comes to need-it-now rentals. Netflix still has a much wider array of DVD choices, but you have to wait on the mail to deliver it; Redbox generally has a lot of newer releases, and they're all waiting in a nearby box for just $1 per night.
But the technology world is moving quickly, and physical DVDs are in risk of being pushed aside in favor of movie streaming. Even Netflix finally started a streaming-only option for consumers in the U.S. and Canada, and their "Watch Instantly" streaming option has been a huge hit with consumers. Now, Redbox will be joining that market. Speaking on a recent earnings call, Redbox executives made clear that they would initiate a streaming option starting in 2011. According to CEO Paul Davis, Redbox is in "detailed negotiations with a number of highly interested parties" to get their branding onto a streaming service.
This means that we may not see an entirely new service; it's possible that Redbox may simply re-brand Amazon's Video on Demand service, but hopefully it will at least be tweaked some to include more new releases. We highly doubt it's a direct partnership with Netflix, but anything is possible. The company also stated that they see streaming as a "significant opportunity," but they aren't pulling out of the DVD kiosk business anytime soon. It's also unclear if this will be an all-you-can-watch option, or a pay-per-view option like iTunes. Time will tell, but more competition can only be good for the end users.

Apple Faces Fight for iPad Trademark
Proview, a Taiwanese-owned company which owns the trademark for "iPad" China says it will sue Apple for infringing on its ownership in that market, according a report in the Financial Times. Nearly a decade ago, PRoview tried unsuccessfully to market a tablet computer it called "I-Pad."Although the product failed, the company trademarked the name "IPAD" in the E.U., China, Mexico, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam at different times between the years 2000 and 2004. FT notes that trademark databases validate Proview's claim.
In 2006, Proview reportedly sold the global trademark (except, Proview said, in China) to a U.S. company named IP Application Development, for $55,100. It turns out, however, that IP Application Development was really just a front for Apple.

Naturally, Proview’s shareholders and creditors would love to see the trademarks sold at the highest possible price, but Apple has blocked any attempts to do so via preliminary injunctions granted after Apple and IP Application Development sued Proview.
According to the FT, Apple is seeking an order requiring Proview to assign the Chinese IPAD trademark to IP Application Development, per the 2006 agreement. However, FT added, according to online trademark databases, while the ownership of the E.U. trademark for IPAD changed from Proview to Apple this year, two IPAD trademarks registered in China are still shown as belonging to Proview.
Interestingly, just prior to the launch of the iPad, Apple settled with the owner of the U.S. trademark: Fujitsu.

I am interested in whether you have done any testing on these cards, i would like to know whether the add-on cards, or the intergrated ones on the motherboards, which is better?
Also would like to know which ones actually do what they say, and which one preforms better, than the other one. I have been looking at the Intel, and the Adaptec, and also the High Point.
Thanks for your time,

Boxee Box, Software To Support VUDU Streaming Movie Rentals
VUDU. Does that name ring a bell? If you have been paying attention to the media streaming world the past few years, it might. The company began by offering a set-top box solution, much like Roku has recently. The box was only for movie rentals and purchases, though, so no other outside streaming from places like Hulu. Since it was so limited in scope, few people actually went out of their way to get a box. Early on, VUDU realized that licensing their software out made more sense. This would enable existing set-top boxes to actually add functionality, and even select connected televisions. This week, VUDU announced that their movie rental service would also be joining Boxee for Windows, Mac and even on the Boxee Box. If you've been considering a Boxee Box, now there's all the more reason to buy one.
VUDU's movie rental service supports full 1080p HD video streams, and it promises newer releases (like Iron Man 2, Get Him To The Greek, and Prince of Persia) available to rent as soon as they hit the market and thousands of titles available for just $2 for 2 night rentals. Also, anyone who signs up for VUDU through Boxee will get a free movie rental. VUDU will be available as a Boxee App on Windows and Mac computers, as well as the Boxee Box by D-Link this November.
Vudu’s HD On-Demand Movie Service Arrives on Boxee
VUDU’s awesome on-demand movie service will soon be available to Boxee users in the US on Mac, Windows, and Boxee Box platforms.
Boxee is honored to be VUDU’s very first Mac & Windows delivery platform, allowing users both new and old to access VUDU’s huge library of content from any computer. In turn, VUDU will be Boxee’s first premium pay-per-view movie service with access to new release movies as soon as they come out on DVD along with a huge catalogue of TV shows and critically acclaimed films.
With the industry’s largest HD content library and the ability to stream content in full 1080p HD, VUDU has quickly separated itself from the competition as a must-have service for any cinephile. VUDU makes it easy to find a movie for any taste by bringing in a huge catalogue of options for indies as well as Hollywood hits, new releases (like Iron Man 2, Get Him To The Greek, and Prince of Persia) available to rent as soon as they hit the market and thousands of titles available for just $2 for 2 night rentals. In conjunction with our existing movie library and Netflix App, we’re excited that Boxee will soon have options for every budget and access to almost any mainstream movie.
With the new VUDU App, Boxee users will get full access to a massive library of movies and TV shows. The App gives you access to all major genres, curated movie collections and the ability to pivot off of directors/actors/producers (helpful when your friend swears the guy who ate next to you at Fred 62 was from Silence of the Lambs, and you say he’s from the Wire, and you realize, you’re both right).
VUDUÂ has been kind enough to offer every new user who signs up through Boxee a free movie so you can try out the service when it launches.
Boxee’s free software will give viewers access to VUDU’s immense movie collection in standard definition. Users who have the Boxee Box by D-Link will experience the mind-blowing quality of VUDU’s full HD and HDX library delivered directly onto their televisions in 1080p with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound.
We’ve been big fans of VUDU for a long time. We’ve seen them grow from a small startup just like us, to a new powerhouse within the entertainment industry after their purchase by Wal-Mart and release on most major TVs and Blu-Ray players. Through our partnership, anyone can now try VUDU on their computer via Boxee; something we hope that will enable a whole new audience of people to experience their service. Meanwhile we are looking forward to a long-lasting partnership with them across all Boxee-enabled devices.

Walgreens Offers $99 Tablet Through Friday But Quality Uncertain
A few weeks back, we covered Cherrypal's announcement of the CherryPad. a 7" tablet aimed at the "sub-iPad" market with a retail price of just $188. Not even a month later, Walgreens is offering the Maylong M-150, a 7" tablet for just $99—$30 less than the $129 base price. The tablet's hardware is modest, even in comparison to the CherryPad. Rather than an 800MHz ARM11 core, the system uses a 533MHz VIA-designed VM8505+. It includes 256MB of RAM, an unknown amount of additional flash memory, and instead of Android 2.1, it's running Android 1.6 (Donut). There's no word yet on whether or not more recent versions of Android can be slipped into the device, or whether or not it's worth the trouble.
Behold the Maylong M-150. Another innovative design from the country whose name is synonymous with quality.
When yours truly dropped information on this sale on the news desk, the only response was silence. After several minutes, an unseen coworker took pity on my place at the center of this awkward tableau and muttered "Good luck with that."Â Follow up questions revealed that I'm not the first staff member to take a chance on an unknown, dirt-cheap peripheral. In hushed tones, our writers and editors revealed the merciless depths of their torment; one poor soul's testimony included the phrase "the misbegotten spawn of Jabba, Rosie O'Donnell, and a dead yak."

That's the Yak on top, with....no, wait a minute...
Under such circumstances, Caveat Emptor should be considered less of a good idea and more of a life philosophy. The good news, however, is that Walgreens is willing to accept returns for up to 30 days after purchase, provided you have a receipt. Products can be returned via mail or to a store and a full refund is available. With a Walgreens right up the road, I've felt secure enough to purchase one of these devices—we'll have more information on it when it arrives. If you choose to order (or, even better, have played with one), drop your thoughts and experience below.Â
