Start-up Fluid Computer Systems sure has chutzpah. On Tuesday it declared that it would not only have 1,000 Windows 7, 10.1-inch multi-touch tablets ready for Christmas, but that it would take out the iPad in the process. The first statement seems true enough, the second, highly unlikely. The Fluid Stream, a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth-equipped device, will list for $599. If you want 3G in the form of the Fluid Motion, that'll set you back $699, and a couple of months. The Motion won't be available until February. You can

ABI Research Confirms Smartphone Market Is Hot
A new report from ABI Research shows what many of us have suspected for some time: the smartphone market is HOT, HOT, HOT. According to ABI's Smartphone Market Data report, smartphones made up 19% of all handsets shipped in the second quarter. Compared to the same quarter a year earlier, this represents an increase of 50%. Because many carriers are now offering relatively inexpensive (and highly subsidized) handsets, the initial cost of the smartphone is no longer the main barrier. Instead, the cost of the monthly

Yamaha's PDX-31: An iPod Stereo With Style
Apple's iPod and iPhone have garnered a huge amount of third-party attention. Accessory makers love these devices, and sound systems seem to be one of the more prevalent devices that are released. Most are rather common, with few sticking out above the rest. Even Apple had their own Hi-Fi system years back, but did away with it while allowing third-party companies to serve that demand. But the Yamaha PDX-31 looks better than most, and has a stylish design that few others can replicate. This new unit, which will

Sennheiser Introduces New Gaming Headset Lineup
Sennheiser probably isn't the first company that comes to mind when you think about gaming headsets. That's because the company really isn't in that market. They're best known for higher-end headphones for musicians and music lovers, but rarely do they enter the same territory as Razer and Turtle Beach. Now, that's different. With gamers shelling out so much for accessories, Sennheiser has decided to try their hand at this game. They're announcing four new gaming headsets today, with the PC 360 being the flagship

Amazon Rewrites Website For iPad Viewing: Windowshop
Apple's iPad is seen as a lot of things. An e-reader. A Web browsing tool. A gaming device. An e-mail machine. But it's not really widely viewed as something that you'd go shopping on. Most mainstream shopping websites are still best viewed on a real PC or Mac with a full Web browser, but Amazon is changing that. Amazon already has a rather nice iPhone shopping site, and the company has now overhauled their entire website for viewing and shopping on the iPad. According to Amazon, it was "a complete rewrite of

iOS Security Hole Allows Easy Bypassing of Lock Screen
A flaw in iOS 4.1 means it is possible to access the iPhone’s contact list and phone keypad even if the device is locked. The flaw has been reported, but it remains to be seen if Apple will close it before 4.2 launches in November. To bypass the lock, when an iPhone is locked with a passcode, you tap the “Emergency

Nokia Siemens Networks Debuts Phantom DSL Technology At Blazing Speeds
The world will probably never stop searching for faster Internet connections. That drive is what pushed us from the modems of old to the place where we are today: a place that involves broadband Internet via DSL, cable, fiber optics, and satellites. But of course, fast is never really fast enough, and while the bigger push today is getting basic broadband services to rural communities, the race for more speed is always ongoing in the background. But it's not always brand new technology delivering new speed records.

Are Hybrid Drives the Next Big Thing?
We'd all love to deck out our desktops and notebooks with high-speed, capacious solid state drives (SSD), but let's face, as good as the technology is, SSDs are still too frakking expensive for mainstream consumption. We're not talking about those puny 64GB SSDs that can be had for comparatively cheap. Sure they're affordable, but once you install an OS and a few programs, you're back to relying on a hard drive. The alternative? Buy a bigger a SSD. The only problem with that is who wants to drop over a grand

Are Hybrid Drives the Next Big Thing?
There's another alternative in hybrid drives, which combine the best of both worlds -- the capacity of a hard drive and some of the speed of an SSD. According to a new report by market research firm Objective Analysis, hybrid drives are primed to dominate the market.
"We expect the hybrid drive market to nearly double every year for the five years following its initial adoption, reaching 600 million units by 2016," said analyst Jim Handy, who authored the report, in a statement. "This blazing growth will result from hybrid drives replacing standard HDDs in mainstream PCs."
Hybrid drives add a nominal amount of flash memory to a conventional mechanical hard drive, which acts as a speedy buffer for frequently accessed data. In time, some analysts believe the amount of flash memory in hybrid drives will ramp to 16GB and beyond. The end result is a hybrid drive that's a little more expensive than traditional hard drives, but much faster than an HDD and far less expensive than an SSD.

Some companies are striving to make more out of what we already have, which is a very cost effective method compared to building out entirely new networks. Nokia Siemens Networks is one of those companies, and today they have announced a new technology that could drastically increase the data carrying capacity of standard copper wires.

The company achieved data transmission speeds of 825 megabits per second (Mbps) over 400 meters of bonded copper lines and 750 Mbps over 500 meters. Most DSL services available to consumers now top out at 30Mbps or 40Mbps, with some "extreme" cable services going as high as 100Mbps. But these rates are much, much higher, and they use the same copper technology that is already widely available.
Nokia Siemens Networks used circuits that involve the creation of a virtual - or ’phantom’ - channel to supplement the two physical wires that are the standard configuration for copper transmission lines. The approach, known as Phantom DSL, is being showcased this week, and could hopefully be used in a real world application in the future. The company has yet to mention a time line for that, but the fact that it's being demonstrated to the public is a great sign. We'd gladly take DSL at those speeds, wouldn't you?

Nokia Siemens Networks achieves world record copper DSL speeds
Paris, France – 25 October 2010
"Phantom DSL" reaches 825 megabits per second over 400 meters of copper lines
Nokia Siemens Networks has successfully tested a technology that could drastically increase the data carrying capacity of standard copper wires. The company achieved data transmission speeds of 825 megabits per second (Mbps) over 400 meters of bonded copper lines and 750 Mbps over 500 meters. At these speeds, network operators could optimize existing, widely deployed copper infrastructure to provide bandwidth-intensive services for years to come.
Nokia Siemens Networks used circuits that involve the creation of a virtual - or ’phantom’ - channel to supplement the two physical wires that are the standard configuration for copper transmission lines. The approach, known as Phantom DSL is also being showcased during Broadband World Forum 2010 in Paris,
October 26 - 28.
“Laying down new optical fiber to the home remains costly, though it is capable of delivering very high speeds and is a definite solution for long-term bandwidth requirements,†said Eduard Scheiterer, head of broadband access business line, Nokia Siemens Networks. “However, the innovative use of technologies such as phantom circuits helps operators provide an efficient last mile connectivity with existing copper wires.â€
Phantom DSL promises a bandwidth increase of 50-75% over existing bonded copper lines. This prolongs the life of copper networks, delaying the need for fiber rollout and protecting operator’s existing capital investments. The promised high speeds will enable a whole new range of end-user services and open up new revenue opportunities for operators. The technology could be used to test initial demand for very high bandwidth services.
Nokia Siemens Networks’ Phantom DSL will become an integral part of the company’s DSLAM* products hiX 562x/3x.

The company that consistently delivers eye-popping PC enclosures has struck once again, this time with a mid-tower that you won't need a forklift and a 10-foot door in order to get into your gaming lair. Specifications include twin intake 120mm fans (and 1 exhaust), a single 140mm fan hole for another fan, 7+1 PCI slots, up to 7 3.5" hard drives mounts, USB 3.0 support and colors including "spider-edition red," black or silver. White iPhone 4 Delayed Until Spring 2011
This summer, Apple introduced a new iPhone? Remember that? They announced that in late July, a white and black iPhone 4 would ship to AT&T as well as carriers around the globe. At the product introduction event in California, Apple only had white iPhone 4 units laying around for the press to handle. Many felt that the white iPhone 4 had a bit of extra style, and many pre-ordered that one. Late July came, and no iPhone 4 shipped for those who wanted white. Months passed, and Apple issued an official delay statement. Then the new date came and went, and Apple issued another delay notice. Then that day came and went. It's all very unlike-Apple, but the company is now being forced to make yet another statement. The bottom line is this: if you are still holding out for a white iPhone 4, you should probably give up the dream and order a black model. Or order a different phone altogether if you're too upset.
According to a new report originating in Reuters, Apple has delayed the white iPhone 4 until next Spring. Yes, Spring 2011. Nearly 9 months after it was originally announced. Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller had this to say: "We're sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone again."
