There are so many different Android phones, and that's been one of the reasons for Android's success. Different form factors, different carriers, even in the U.S. So how do you find out about all them? Google has an app, er, sorry, a web site for that. In fact, the Google Phone Gallery also shows what you do with a web page that's no longer being used. It used to be the site you would go to if you wanted to by an HTC Nexus One, the late, lamented Google Phone (http://www.google.com/phone). It's an interesting

Android Apps Caught Sending Private Data to Advertisers

Now, that's being pushed back. The company has come forward with an official product delay, meaning that the 3DS will not be on sale in any market, Japan or otherwise, for the huge holiday season.

Ram speed (the "is this ram compatible with this motherboard" thread)
Hey guys, I'm putting together a rig for my girlfriend, but it's been a while since I've done this. I'm looking at a motherboard that says the memory standard is "2000MHz+" (and another one that is "2600MHz+"). Now, I thought that it meant DDR3 2000 or higher. But when I look at the combo deals, they're selling it bundled with DDR3 1600. And I couldn't even find DDR3 2600 ram, but the motherboard can come bundled with DDR3 1600 as well. Do I need DDR3 2000 ram for these boards? Or am I mistaken?

AMD to Launch Radeon HD 6000 Series October 19
The latest chatter runs counter to recent reports that AMD would delay the launch of its HD 6000 series, and since AMD hasn't said anything official, we'll just have to wait and see. Meanwhile, Nvidia is planning to cut the price of its GTX 460 768MB card during that same time frame to sway users away from the HD 5000 series, so we can see why AMD would pull a 180 and push ahead with its 6000 series rather than put it on the back burner for another month or two.
In case you haven't seen it by now, a purportedly leaked slide shows exactly how AMD's 6000 series will stack up to its HD 5000 series. According to the slide, the 6000 series will also come built on a 40nm manufacturing process, but the Barts PRO and Barts XT cores look to be quite a bit faster than the Juniper PRO and Juniper XT cores they're replacing, and compares somewhat favorably to the Cypres XT-based 5870.

Android Apps Caught Sending Private Data to Advertisers
A study using an application called "TaintDroid: An Information-Flow Tracking System for Realtime Privacy Monitoring on Smartphones," conducted by Intel Labs, Penn State Univesity, and Duke University found that a number of Android apps were sending user data, including location, back to advertisers. In fact, the study found, one-half, or 15 out of 30 of the apps tested, shared some private data."TaintDroid" itself is a real-time monitoring service that researchers used to track the flow of "privacy-sensitive data" through third-party Android apps. The full study is here (.PDF). TaintDroid looks for taints, or data from privacy-sensitive sources.
The TaintDroid research found that 15 of the 30 apps send users' "geographic location to remote advertisement servers." Additionally, seven of the 30 applications send a unique hardware hardware identifier and, in some cases, even send the phone number and SIM card information. Researchers said they identified 68 cases of "potentially misused private information" by 20 apps.
In August, Google banned, then later restored a series of wallpaper apps from the Android Market, that were similarly collecting such data. In that case, Google eventually said that the developer was simply overzealous.
Google, in response to the finding, reminded that all Android Market apps indicate which "permissions" they require. They said:
When users install an Android Market app, the spokesperson said, "users see a screen that explains clearly what information the application has permission to access, such as a user's location or contacts. Users must explicitly approve this access in order to continue with the installation, and they may uninstall applications at any time. Any third party code included in an application is bound by these same permissions. We consistently advise users to only install apps they trust."True, but just as with the end-user license agreements (EULAs) attached to software, how many people really read that?

The following applications were used in the study. However, researchers didn't reveal which of them were "culprits" in the study. They were: The Weather Channel, Cestos, Solitaire, Movies, Babble, Manga Browser, Bump, Wertago, Antivirus, ABC Animals, Traffic Jam, Hearts, Blackjack, Horoscope, 3001 Wisom Quotes Live, Yellow Pages, Dastelefonbuch, Astrid, BBC News Live Stream, Ringtones, Layer, Knocking, Barcode Scanner, Coupons, Trapster, Spongebob Slide, ProBasketBall, MySpace, ixMAT, and Evernote.

Linux On Your iPad? Yes, You Can
If you love your Apple iPad but wish you could run your favorite 'nix applications on it, StarNet Communications has an app for that. If you've been dying to see Flash apps on the iPad, the company's got a fix for that, too -- and none of it involves a hack that would anger ole' Steve. StarNet on Thursday released iLIVEx. It turns the iPad into an X terminal that runs Linux and Unix apps hosted on remote servers. The folks at StarNet say iLIVEx will give users LAN-like performance when accessing remote apps, even over 3G connections, because it relies on the speedy X11 protocol. Connections are secure, too, by way of SSH encryption.
If you have an iPad but have not yet developed a taste for Linux, StarNet has an app for that, too. When you buy iLIVEx you'll get a free account that lets you run a virtual Linux desktop. It runs on the iPad but can also be run on a Mac, Windows or Linux PC. With the virtual desktop you gain access to apps hosted on StarNet's cloud Linux server. These give iPad users functions they can't get natively such as:
- The ability to view Flash. The cloud apps include a Firefox browser which lets iPad users see Flash-based Web sites and applications. (Hulu anyone?)
- The ability to copy and paste between applications on the iPad.
- The ability to access the virtual Linux desktop from Windows, Linux and Macintosh PCs, as well as the iPad, switching at will between them without losing data. This requires you to buy the appropriate X11 client for each PC. But StarNet will give you a six-month trial version of the others when you buy iLIVEx.
iLIVEx costs $14.99 and is available now from the App Store for U.S. and Canadian residents. StarNet will be able to sell globally in about 30 days, after the U.S. government gives its OK for the company to export iLIVEx's SSH encryption code.

A new feature on the HD HERO 960 is “One Button Mode†which locks the camera into video or photo mode and automatically starts recording once the camera is turned on. Since the camera is locked into recording once turned on, this new “One Button Mode†makes it easier than ever to capture the footage of your most exciting moments with the single press of a button. Perfect for new users, loaning the camera to friends, or when rented out to rental customers, One Button Mode makes the HD HERO 960 as easy to use as pressing a button. One Button Mode can be turned on and off, depending on the user’s preference.
The HD HERO 960 shares the same bomb-proof housing construction that has taken the original 1080p HD HERO to both the North and South poles, to the edge of Space and down to the great depths of the ocean. Rated to 180’/60m, the HD HERO 960’s housing protects the camera during any activity so that you can focus on having fun without worrying about the camera. In the event that you do damage the housing, replacement lenses, housings, and other parts are available so that you can replace only those parts you need, not the entire camera.
Included mounts that come with the HD HERO 960:
   * Head Strap – Allows you to wear the camera like a headlamp. You can also pull this strap over helmets for easy camera sharing between friends.
   * Flat and Curved Surface Adhesive Baseplates - Baseplate easily adheres onto a flat or curved surface allowing the HD HERO 960 with simple click on and quick release mounting.
A new mount featured in the HD HERO 960 is GoPro’s Helmet Front Mount, a curved extension arm that makes it easy to mount the HD HERO 960 on the front of a helmet like a miner's light or headlamp. The most low profile and convenient way to mount a camera on a helmet, the Helmet Front Mount also allows for the camera to be extended out in front of the helmet and pointed back at the wearer, allowing for incredible self portrait videos and photos of the action.
GoPro’s HD HERO Cameras Capture Video You and Others Actually Want to Watch
“We’ve been amazed at not only the quality of video that our customers have produced with the HD HERO since it’s launch, but also the variety of activities our customers are engaged in. People use the HD HERO camera for every type of activity imaginable,†said Nicholas Woodman, founder and CEO of GoPro, “Everyone has their passion and we’re so stoked that the HD HERO seems to be people’s solution for capturing incredibly high quality HD footage of that passion. The reason behind the HD HERO 960 is to make it easy for even more people to GoPro. We can’t wait to see the amazing footage all of our new customers are going capture and share.â€
A simple search for “GoPro†on video sharing sites brings back thousands of videos consumers have created and proactively tagged as ‘GoPro.’
“We don’t automatically mark videos that were uploaded from a GoPro, so the fact that people are tagging their videos ‘GoPro’ is a great sign that our customers are really fired up on GoPro’s brand,†exclaimed Woodman. “Equally exciting is the average number of views these videos are getting. It’s telling that so many people love watching content captured with a GoPro camera. Your average GoPro customer is creating content that is often on par as with network television programming. That’s our most satisfying accomplishment...that we’re putting the power of professional HD capture into the hands of everyday enthusiasts. GoPro, indeed,†Woodman exclaims.

Google's Phone Gallery Keeps You Posted on the Latest Android Phones
There are so many different Android phones, and that's been one of the reasons for Android's success. Different form factors, different carriers, even in the U.S. So how do you find out about all them? Google has an app, er, sorry, a web site for that.In fact, the Google Phone Gallery also shows what you do with a web page that's no longer being used. It used to be the site you would go to if you wanted to by an HTC Nexus One, the late, lamented Google Phone (http://www.google.com/phone).

It's an interesting way to keep up with the latest and greatest Android phones, as it can be sorted either alphabetically or by date. You can also select and compare up to three phones, and filter by manufacturer. It's a little embarrassing for the Motorola Charm to be the phone at the top of the list when sorted in default mode (date of release), but hey, soon, that will be replaced by the G2, right?

Top-of-the-line GeForce GTX 460M discrete graphics card
Taipei—You’re a sniper in the middle of a fierce firefight. You’re trying to get an enemy soldier in your sites, but because he’s far away, poor resolution makes it hard to lock it on him. MSI Marketing Director Sam Chern explains that the GT663, MSI's new generation gaming series laptop, comes equipped with GeForce GTX 460M (1.5GB GDDR5), nVidia’s most advanced discrete graphics card to support DirectX 11. The high resolution it provides faithfully displays scenes from the battle, giving you clear shots of opponents. You can't blame your equipment anymore. Sam Chern points out that MSI already uses this series of discrete graphics cards in its powerful and stylish F series laptops which have won praise from media organizations the world over.

Powerful hardware
MSI Marketing Director Sam Chern explains that MSI's new generation G series GT663 gaming laptop comes with the latest Intel Core i7 quad core CPU under the hood as well as three DDR3 memory slots for a maximum of 12GB of expandable memory. In addition, MSI worked in cooperation with internationally renowned sound system designer Dynaudio to give the GT663 the ultimate in audio. It also has DTS Surround Sensation UltraPCâ„¢ technology to give you cinema-class sound at no extra cost through dual-channel speakers or headsets.

Cooler Boost technology: In addition to instant Turbo Drive courtesy of TDE technology, the GT663 has another awesome feature—MSI’s own Cooler Boost technology. Again, just a touch of a luminescent hotkey located above the keyboard kicks in the powerful cooling action. The GT663 also offers players core temperature change and variable fan speed, allowing it to stay cool as a cucumber even when working for extended periods in high temperatures.
Awesome audio
Perfect speaker position:Â To build a laptop with superb sound, you need to be meticulous about every detail. Even speaker locations and sound field design have to be calculated with precision. MSI worked side by side with Dynaudio to carry out vast amounts of study and countless calculations on the GT663 to determine ideal locations to install speakers to obtain obstruction-free sound transmission.
Superior sound performance:Â With DTS Surround Sensation UltraPCâ„¢ technology, your dual channel laptop provides 5.1 channel theater-class wrap-around sound without the need to calculate optimal positions for the six speakers.

Brite-View Streams 1080p Content From PC to TV With HDelight
Wireless streaming, aside from tablet PCs, seems to be all the rage these days. It was once reserved for those in the high-end market, but now the technology has hit a price point that's ready for mass market. Brite-View has been in the game for some time now, primarily in the business of creating media streamers. But the new HDelight is a wireless 1080p PC-to-TV transmission kit, and it marks the company's third WHDI solution for the home theater. This one is definitely the smallest of the three, with the ability to turn any HDMI-ready computer into a wireless home theater PC. Brite-View has made this one remarkably easy to use; just plug the USB-powered transmitter into the computer's HDMI port, and the receiver into the TV's HDMI port. There's no extra software to install or anything. The HDelight can transmit 1080p content up to 30 feet without latency, and even Blu-ray Players are supported.
The unit is up for pre-sale now at $179.99, which is far cheaper than the $1k+ units that did the same thing just a couple of years ago.
brite-View HDelight Turns HDMI-Ready PCs Into Wireless HTPCs
Â
Web and PC Content Such as Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and 1080p Blu-ray Movies Transfer from PC to TV Wirelessly
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- brite-View by Xpike Innovation today launched the HDelight (BV-1222), the company's third WHDI solution for the home theater. The HDelight is the most compact of the three, and further differentiates itself with the ability to turn any HDMI-ready computer into a wireless home theater PC.
Using the HDelight is easy. Just plug the USB-powered transmitter into the computer's HDMI port, and the receiver into the TV's HDMI port. The user can then immediately start enjoying any content available on the computer on the flat-screen HDTV, including Blu-ray movies, Netflix, Hulu and YouTube. This plug-and-play solution requires no software installation. The HDelight can transmit 1080p content up to 30 feet without latency, so PC gamers can enjoy the full rush on a large-screen TV.
One of the YouTube videos brite-View pre-released for the HDelight addressed a common "multi-tasking" scenario. Using the dual monitor display on your PC, the HDelight lets you watch a Netflix movie on TV while simultaneously checking your Facebook status.
"brite-View is the market leader for WHDI solutions that enrich HD entertainment experiences," says Robert Lo, CEO of Xpike Innovation. "With the HDelight, you can enjoy web or PC content on TV without having to spend $2,000 for the new connected TV. Because Boxee software is installed on the PC and smart phones work as remote controls, you don't need other boxes around the TV."
The HDelight MSRP is $179.99, but on www.brite-view.com, it is available for pre-order for $159.99. brite-View is also holding a sweepstakes, and on October 28, 2010 one lucky person will win the HDelight and Logitech diNovo Mini bundle.Â

You Will Soon Own a Home Robot, Researchers Say
Vacuum robots have had the most success with consumers so far, but its these types of personal presence robots that ABI thinks will soon take off. "While a truly 'killer app' has yet to emerge in personal robots, security/telepresence and health care-related applications are likely to gain significant traction by the end of the forecast period," says Larry Fisher emerging technologies research director for ABI Research.
For instance, earlier this month Willow Garage introduced the PR2 remote presence robot. It allows workers to attend meetings or trade shows via an Internet video connection. It has robotic arms and hands that mimic human dexterity. These can do important tasks such as fetch a beer or play a game of pool. It can also be programmed to wash the dishes or do the laundry while you drink the beer, and it won't complain or throw snide looks at you.

Downside: it costs $400,000 -- which doesn't exactly fit the budget of the average consumer. Seriously, that's about double the median cost of houses in the U.S. The PR2 runs on open source software and Willow is offering a $120,000 discount toward purchase for open source programmers that write apps for it.
In comparison, the Anybots' QB Personal Avatar robot is a relative bargain. QBs will start shipping in late 2010 at a price tag of $15,000. The QB doesn't have arms, so it won't function as your maid or beer waiter. It will be your remote eyes and ears with its 5 megapixels camera and three microphones. (It focuses on the loudest voice, its makers say). It weighs 35 pounds and moves at the pace a person would use to politely flee down the hall away from it (3.5 mph). It will last two hours on a battery charge.
For creep effect, it's eyes go dark to indicate when you've logged out.

Then again, maybe you just want to be pampered. Or better still, you want your bedridden grandma to be pampered. In that case, personal care robots might be for you. Panasonic will be demonstrating a hair washing robot at the International Home Care & Rehabilitation Exhibition in Tokyo next month. It's geared for the elderly in assisted living facilities and so works with a mechanical bed that transforms into a wheelchair, says Endgadget.

Study: Texting While Driving Bans are Ineffective
Because of situations like this -- and worse -- most states have had the good sense to ban texting while driving. It'd be naive to think a law prohibiting an activity would stop it altogether, but surely it's helping, right? Maybe not. According to a new study by researchers at the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), laws against texting while driving have done nothing to reduce the number of text-related crashes. Surprising? Chew on this -- since these laws went into effect, the number of insurance claims filed under collision coverage have actually went up!

In Minnesota, the collision rate went up 9 percent after the texting while driving ban went into effect.
"Texting bans haven't reduced crashes at all. In a perverse twist, crashes increased in 3 of the 4 states we studied after bans were enacted. It's an indication that texting bans might even increase the risk of texting for drivers who continue to do so despite the laws," says Adrian Lund, president of both HLDI and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
You could chalk it up to coincidence or just disregard the study altogether, but there's actually a plausible reason why bans on texting while driving might actually be causing the crash rate to go up.
"If drivers were disregarding the bans, then the crash patterns should have remained steady," Lund explains. "So clearly drivers did respond to the bans somehow, and what they might have been doing was moving their phones down and out of sight when they texted, in recognition that what they were doing was illegal. This could exacerbate the risk of texting by taking drivers' eyes further from the road and for a longer time."
Lund's assessment jives with recent survey results, which show that many drivers, and in particularly young and inexperienced ones, admit to disregarding these bans. Almost half of all drivers ages 18-24 years old said they still text while driving, partly because they didn't feel like there was a high risk of getting caught.
Do the results surprise you?

HP Names A New CEO: Léo Apotheker
And just like that, another CEO rolls into an HP corner office. Not even two months after HP's Mark Hurd resigned as the CEO of Hewlett-Packard, a replacement has been found. It's not immediately clear why the temporary CEO wasn't positioned as full-time, nor is perfectly clear why HP went outside of the company. We always have to wonder what kind of impact is has on employee morale when a company seeks a CEO from outside of the company (was no one in the company good enough? was the company in need of a culture shift?), but nevertheless, Léo Apotheker is taking over. The HP Board of Directors announced today that Léo Apotheker will be taking over at Chief Executive Officer and President. Previously, Apotheker served as CEO of SAP, and he will also join HP’s Board of Directors in addition to his other duties. The Board also elected Ray Lane, Managing Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, as a new member of the Board and designated him as non-executive Chairman. Both elections are effective November 1.
Apotheker spent over 20 years at SAP, and he is credited with expanding the company's R&D platforms and leading SAP to 18 consecutive quarters of double-digit software revenue growth between 2004 and 2009. Â
The press release, which is below, is full of back-slapping and smiles, but only time (and quarterly results) will tell if this was a good move. Will he change anything major at HP? Refocus divisions? Either way, it should be interesting to watch someone from the outside come in and start moving things around.
Léo Apotheker Named CEO and President of HP
Ray Lane Joins HP as Non-Executive Chairman of the Board
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Board of Directors of HP (NYSE: HPQ) today announced the election of Léo Apotheker as Chief Executive Officer and President. Apotheker, who previously served as CEO of SAP, will also join HP’s Board of Directors. The Board also elected Ray Lane, Managing Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, as a new member of the Board and designated him as non-executive Chairman. Both elections are effective November 1.
“After more than two decades in the industry, he has a strong track record of driving technological innovation, building customer relationships and developing world-class teams.â€
During Apotheker’s more than 20 years at SAP, he was a driving force in making it the largest business software applications company in the world. Apotheker helped develop and implement the most significant changes in SAP history. During his tenure, he transformed R&D and technology platforms and expanded business models and customer segments. Apotheker also helped lead SAP to 18 consecutive quarters of double-digit software revenue growth between 2004 and 2009.
Lane has served on the Board of Directors of more than 20 public and private companies and joined Kleiner Perkins in 2000. Previously, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer at Oracle Corporation. Earlier in his career, Lane also worked at Booz Allen Hamilton, EDS and IBM.
“Léo is a strategic thinker with a passion for technology, wide-reaching global experience and proven operational discipline – exactly what we were looking for in a CEO,†said Robert Ryan, lead independent director of the Board. “After more than two decades in the industry, he has a strong track record of driving technological innovation, building customer relationships and developing world-class teams.â€
Ryan continued, “Léo has been a leader in anticipating the transformation taking place in our industry, and we believe he is uniquely positioned to help accelerate HP’s strategy. He has demonstrated success in the U.S. market and also has vast international experience – which will be a major asset as HP continues to expand globally, particularly in high-growth emerging markets. HP has the right assets and market positions, and now we have the best team to realize the company’s enormous potential.â€
“HP has a powerful mix of businesses, products and services, one of the most innovative cultures in the industry, and an accomplished management team who have played a critical role in its success,†said Apotheker. “I am deeply honored to be joining the more than 300,000 dedicated HP employees.â€
Apotheker continued, “Given HP’s diversified products and services, its financial strength, and its leadership position across markets, no other company is as well positioned to drive – and profit from – the revolutionary changes under way in the marketplace. As we move forward, HP will continue to be a valued partner with our customers as well as a fierce competitor. I look forward to working with the outstanding people at HP to write the next chapter in the company’s long and proud history.â€
“I am excited to join the Board of this pioneering company, and look forward to working closely with Léo – and the rest of the Board and senior management team – as they capitalize on the changes taking place across the industry,†Lane said. “I have known and admired Léo for almost 20 years. He is ideally suited to build on HP’s strong foundation, leverage its many assets and keep the company at the forefront of innovation.â€
Apotheker will succeed Cathie Lesjak, who was named interim CEO in August 2010. Lesjak, who has served as HP’s Chief Financial Officer since January 2007, remains CFO and continues to serve as a member of the Executive Council. Ryan said, “Cathie is and will continue to be an important part of HP. We are extremely fortunate to have one of the deepest, most talented senior management teams in the industry and to have someone of Cathie’s caliber lead HP during this interim period. On behalf of the entire Board, I would like to thank Cathie and our senior management team for maintaining HP’s focus on serving customers and continuing to execute our strategy.â€

New Whitepaper Claims GPUs Threaten Malware Security
For the past 3.5 years or so, NVIDIA has ardently advocated the GPU as a computational platform capable of solving almost any problem. One topic the company hasn't targeted, however, is the tremendous performance advantage the GPU could offer malware authors. The idea that a graphics card could double as a security hole isn't something we've heard before, but according to a paper by Giorgos Vasiliadis, Michalis Polychronakis and Sotiris Ionnidis, it's an attack vector whose popularity could boom in coming years. The trio argues that all the computational hardware that makes the GPU such an ideal fit for certain types of scientific or graphical workloads could (and will) deliver equal benefits to workloads with considerably darker aspirations. The group wrote two CUDA applications demonstrating the proficiency of GPU-based runtime polymorphism or code unpacking. These two techniques are designed to prevent security white hats from detecting or analyzing maleficent code. As you might imagine, the GPU performed both tasks with considerable aplomb. Although the researchers chose to write their proof-of-concept applications using CUDA, it's not because of any security risk particular to that language (or NVIDIA). At the moment, CUDA is the most widely used language for GPGPU applications; the team notes that including an OpenCL version of the malware package would be trivial.
GPUs, the paper argues, threaten on two fronts. First, there's simple performance—GPU malware could perform far more work than traditional CPU-based schemes. Second is the issue of detection. The traditional means by which malware is typically detected are largely inapplicable when it comes to the GPU. Once code is transferred to the GPU, it's essentially cloaked—there's no mechanism by which a CPU-based program can monitor a GPU program to the degree that's theoretically required. With its plentiful supply of local RAM, malicious code can hide in the shadows, conversing with the CPU only on occasion, and only to transfer apparently innocuous bits of data.
More Watch Than Warning
The paper highlights an interesting and new attack vector but we wouldn't raise a full alarm just yet. Before threats leveraging GPU assets can become widespread programmable GPUs must achieve near-total market penetration. Malware, by its very nature, is built to run on as many systems as is (cheaply) possible. Esoteric or high-profile exploits tend to get the most press, but badware creators don't generally try to create highly-targeted software packages aimed at stealing Cyberdyne's plans for a liquid-metal terminator. It's much simpler to
exploit human stupidity, trick people into installing/downloading software that'll run on any system back to the introduction of IA-32, and then commence hijinks.

Yummy Facebook hijinks. Nomnomnom
You might think that every gamer would have upgraded to at least a DX10-capable video card by now (even if running XP)—but you'd be wrong. According to the latest batch of Steam survey results, 18 percent of its users game on GPUs that support DirectX9 with PS2.0b or PS3.0 shaders. That's enough to severely retard criminal interest right there; we'd presumably see an even higher number of older parts if we conducted the same survey across corporate America.
Even once every GPU supports CUDA (or OpenCL, DirectCompute, etc), there will always be a question as to whether or not the 'right' version is supported. A G80 can run CUDA programs—provided they're written to conform to CUDA 1.0 requirements. Again, there are issues of compatibility to consider, which potentially forces the black hats in question to write code that can run on any GPU and sacrifices performance in the process.
The threat is credible enough that we suspect to see additional safeguards and detection systems developed as time goes by. For now, GPU-assisted malware is a theoretical problem of potentially enormous proportions, but theory is all it is. That said, we can almost see the glee with which McAfee and Norton would view this new development—what better way to combat GPU malware than with GPU antiviral products?Â

Gmail Becomes Less Conversational, If You Want
Some people love Gmail's conversation view, and some people hate it. Some just have gotten used to it. Now, however, if you don't like it, you can turn it off.In Gmail's conversation view, an email thread is linked together in one "cluster" in your inbox. It means, in effect, sorting by Subject to see a thread is no longer necessary. Still, not all like it.
Toggling of Conversation View has been a requested feature for some time, and although many (like us) feel conversation view simplifies things, it can be a pain if the email client you are using doesn't support it. Obviously, going to Gmail in the browser is no issue, but some stand-alone clients on the desktop and mobile don't work well with it.

Starting Wednesday, users can go into their Settings and turn off Conversation View. However, cloud-based as it is, as is typical of these feature changes, it will take time to reach all users.
In a blog post, Wiltse Carpenter, Technical Lead at Google, compares the dislike of Conversation View to the dislike of cilantro.
And just as an outspoken minority has banded together in unison to declare their distaste of one of nature’s most delicious herbs, some of you have been very vocal about your dislike of conversation threading. So just like you can order your baja fish tacos without cilantro, you can now get Gmail served up sans conversation view.Try it and tell us what you think. We'll stick with Conversation View, ourselves; we are among those who have "gotten used to it."
