AMD's SB800-series fan speed controller exposed
Fan controllers aren't exactly the sexiest subject in the world of computer hardware, but they are pretty important for anyone who cares about noise and temperature levels in their system. Sadly, a lot of motherboards sport pretty limited controllers on their parts, but it appears that this won't be the case with AMD's SB800 series south bridge.
The SB800 family of south-bridge silicon has an integrated microcontroller that, with a little help from firmware built into a system's BIOS, can offer more control over that system's fans than has ever graced a motherboard. The microcontroller can manage fan speeds using three algorithms: step, linear, and non-linear. In step mode, fan speeds jump from one value to the next as temperatures rise. The linear algorithm smooths things out, allowing fan speeds to ramp, well, linearly between predefined minimum and maximum values. Combine the two, and you have a non-linear approach that's really more multi-linear. This method drapes a string of linear slopes across multiple step points.
Linear mode is most akin to what's available in contemporary BIOSes, although users aren't always able to set minimum and maximum temperature thresholds and fan speeds. Step mode is a little like the old-school high/low fan options that used to be prevalent before linear controls emerged. Instead of being limited to single high and low values, AMD's step mode can accommodate no fewer than eight predefined fan speeds and corresponding temperatures. Non-linear mode is just as flexible, allowing users to configure as many slopes as they can steps.
The Tech Report have more on this functionality.Linear mode is most akin to what's available in contemporary BIOSes, although users aren't always able to set minimum and maximum temperature thresholds and fan speeds. NVIDIA reclaimed some GPU market share last quarter
AMD have been enjoying some good times of late in the GPU market, but this past quarter has seen both Intel and NVIDIA eat into their share according to the latest figures from Jon Peddie Research.
The folks at Jon Peddie Research have compiled some graphics hardware shipment figures for the third quarter, and their numbers suggest Nvidia has reclaimed some market share from AMD. At the same time, Intel saw its piece of the pie grow about two points.
JPR says AMD has attributed its market share decline to "weakened demand and OEMs letting their GPU inventory run down to avoid being stuck with leftover processors." Some of AMD's customers switched to Nvidia products "due to real and perceived shortages in supply," the research firm adds.

Sony's Android 3.0-powered Playstation Phone leaks?
With smartphones threatening to muscle in on the handheld gaming market traditionally dominated by Sony and Nintendo, it appears as though at least one of those companies is planning to fight back. We've heard rumours before about a so-called "PlayStation Phone", but now images of this particular device appear to have found their way online.
It's hard to believe that what we're looking at is real -- but we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you've long been waiting for. As we reported back in August, the device you see is headed into the market soon, likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform. The device snapped up top (and in our gallery below) is sporting a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches. Looking almost identical to the mockup we hit you with this summer, the handset does indeed have a long touchpad in the center which is apparently multitouch, and you can see in the photos that it's still bearing those familiar PlayStation shoulder buttons. For Sony buffs, you'll be interested to know that there's no Memory Stick slot here, but there is support for microSD cards.
