Pixel Qi intros 10-inch companion display, plugs via USB
Earlier this year Pixel Qi began selling a do-it-yourself kit that allowed users to swap out their netbook's existing LCD screen with one from the startup. Initial sales went relatively well for a product aimed primarily at adventurous modders and tested to work with just a few specific netbook models, but the company is hoping to reach new audiences with its latest range of sunlight-readable displays. Partnering up with German firm Display Solution AG, Pixel Qi will start selling its panels as standalone units that can hook up to your computer or smartphone either wired or wirelessly.

Google: Bing is biggest competitor, not Facebook, nor Apple
Google CEO Eric Schmidt believes that Bing, and not Facebook, nor Apple, is Google's biggest competition. "For years people would ask about Microsoft, and now everyone has forgotten about Bing, but again Bing is a well run, highly competitive search engine," Schmidt told The Wall Street Journal. He also makes sure to make some jabs at Apple over its closed system approach and mentions that users should give their information to Google instead of Facebook. Many believe that Google's increasing presence in social networking and in mobile mean that its biggest competitors are Facebook and Apple. Overall though, Schmidt says that the tensions Google has with the two companies are not competitive threats to the search giant.

Sharp to launch 5.5" and 10.8" e-readers in December
Sharp has announced plans to release two Android-based e-readers for the Japanese market in December and says it expects to sell 1 million units during the first year. The company chose the ‘Galapagos’ moniker for its e-reader assault, in reference to the Ecuadorian island that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection, supposedly to denote the company’s shift from conventional one-off sales of stand-alone products to devices that will continue to "evolve" through periodic software updates. The range includes a 5-inch unit featuring a trackball for one-handed operation, and a 10.8-inch model that supports a two-page, magazine spread format.

Apple patents handheld that recognizes your hands
Apple has been granted a patent by the USPTO for a handheld that identifies users based on how they hold their device, as first noted by Engadget. The technology uses capacitive sensors to pick a user and load their profile with customized settings and preferences. A more important application would be creating virtual button panels positioned according to how the user is holding the device, meaning the user could hold it any way he or she wants. This could reduce human error, such as touching parts of the user interface accidentally.
