Weekend Open Forum: How powerful is your PSU?
You know, power supplies don't get the attention they deserve. PSUs sit dutifully behind the curtain bringing the whole show to life while processors and graphics cards hog the spotlight. There's a simple reason they're so overlooked in the enthusiast community, and I think we all know what it is: they're boring. In fact, that's why we tend to avoid reviewing power supplies. That being the case, we think it's about time to pay our respects.

Microsoft pledges to 'lead the way' in PC gaming
Microsoft just doesn't know when to stop. The company dropped a doozy earlier this week after saying "hardly anyone plays first person shooters on the PC anymore," with many abandoning the platform to play titles such as Halo. "It's all about the console," Redmond said. Obviously that's a stretch, and the company received due criticism. In an interview with MCV, Microsoft acknowledged its blunder and said it is working hard to deliver Windows games too, promising to "lead the way" on PC.

FCC approves WiFi on steroids, aka super WiFi
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has voted unanimously (five to nil) in favor of using unlicensed whitespace airwaves for what it calls "WiFi on steroids" or "super WiFi." The opening of these unused television airwaves for mobile broadband should result in new, faster wireless devices. The move is the FCC's first significant release of unlicensed spectrum in 25 years. The reason for the super/steroids name is simple: the frequencies allow signals to travel faster, require fewer access points, penetrate obstructions such as walls more easily, and cover larger geographical areas.

Weekend game deals: 75% off Borderlands, Serious Sam
It's a relatively slow weekend for game deals, but there are at least a couple noteworthy bargains. Microsoft's Games for Windows Live service has cut 75% off Borderlands, putting it at only $7.49 -- about the cheapest we've seen. Meanwhile, both Steam and Direct2Drive have reduced the Serious Sam titles by a substantial amount. GOG doesn't appear to have any actual discounts, but it's worth noting that the service has relaunched with its new design and offerings including Baldur's Gate.

AMD lowers third quarter forecast amid weakening demand
Stagnating notebook sales have taken a toll on AMD, as the chipmaker has adjusted its revenue forecast to account for lower-than-expected sales. At the end of the second quarter, the company predicted that revenue in the following period would be "up," but that has changed. It now expects revenue for the third quarter (ending Saturday, September 25) to be between 1% and 4% lower than the $1.65 billion it reported in the second quarter.

New standards released for SSD evaluation, rating
The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association announced today that its standards subcommittee has released two new standards for evaluating the reliability and endurance of solid-state drives. As more SSDs appear on the market, JEDEC hopes to use the new standards to "reduce market confusion, facilitate broad adoption and alleviate product quality and reliability concerns." This should be a benefit to consumers looking to compare SSDs from different manufacturers and make purchasing decisions that accurately meet their needs.

HTML5 local storage could track your surfing habits
Web surfers generally applaud the changes coming down the pike with HTML5, but last week Wired reported on a potentially unpleasant privacy loophole on mobile phones involving the format's local storage, a feature originally designed to allow offline browsing and faster refreshing of common pages. A lawsuit has followed against Ringleader Digital, an online data collection and advertising firm, alleging that the company is using the feature to create "pseudo-cookies" that are stored locally and can track browsing history. They are not removable using standard cookie cleanup methods and are created by ads placed on the mobile versions of some high-traffic websites including CNN Money, The Travel Channel, and Merriam-Webster.

Dell intros new all-in-one PC, updates Zino HD specs
Setting its crosshairs on the competition, Dell has launched new budget-friendly all-in-one and compact desktop PCs in time for the holiday shopping season. The $799 (starting price) Inspiron One 23 competes with HP's TouchSmart series, and to some degree, Apple's iMac. Key features include a 23-inch multi-touch display that is paired with a new touch interface called "Stage," which provides easy access to applications, music, videos, photos and Internet services like Netflix. The press release shied away from detailing hardware specs, but said the Inspiron One 23 would be available this weekend.

Blockbuster declares bankruptcy, will stay in business
Unsurprisingly, the struggling Blockbuster movie rental empire has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, nearly 25 years after it opened its first store. The once-mighty video rental chain won't be, however, closing its 3,000 remaining stores, DVD vending kiosks, by-mail, or digital services, yet. It has struck a deal with its bondholders for a refinancing plan; more than 80 percent of its secured creditors gave their approval. Under the plan, Blockbuster's debt would be reduced 11-fold.
