Survey: 40m US gamers play on iOS devices, 41m on DS
Market research outfit Newzoo has released the highlights (PDF) of its International Gamers Survey 2010, showing that 40.1 million people in the US play games on Apple's iOS devices (iPods, iPhones and iPads). That's more than half of the 77 million mobile gaming audience in the US. Only the Nintendo DS has a larger following with 41 million gamers ages 10 and up. Both are well ahead of the PSP's 18 million.

Smartphones and tablets boost TFT shipments by 28%
The TFT display business is booming according to iSuppli. The researcher says that, with smartphone and tablet demand surging, the global market for small and medium-sized Thin Film Transistor panels will expand at its quickest rate in years. Sales are expected to total some 2.3 billion units, increasing by 28.1% year-over-year in 2010 -- the fastest since 2007, when shipments soared by 49.8%.

Clearwire begins rolling out WiMAX in New York City
Clearwire's 4G WiMAX network has made its way to the Big Apple -- albeit in a limited capacity. The rollout is nearing completion and the company said it has begun "operational readiness activities" in New York City, as well as Los Angeles and San Francisco. As part of that process, Clear is mailing offers to NYC residents who asked to be updated on the service.

Boxee Box drops Tegra 2 for Atom, preorders open
In a last minute decision, Boxee has decided to power its upcoming set-top device with an Intel chip instead of Nvidia's second-generation Tegra SoC. Apparently, the Tegra 2 just couldn't cut it in the lab. "The major problem we had with the Tegra 2 was support for high-profile HD playback," Boxee said. Clarifying further that, while the Tegra 2 is fine for VC-1, it can't handle H.264 -- a widely used codec among video streaming sites.

Intel's Sandy Bridge processors slated for early 2011
Intel has announced that codename Sandy Bridge will be branded as the second generation of the company's Core processors (as rumored) and will be hitting the market in early 2011 for both desktops and laptops. As with today's chips, only the dual-core chips will be efficient enough for light notebooks; quad-core chips will still be reserved for desktop replacement portables.

YouTube starts testing live streaming
Finally confirming rumors of giving live video streaming a go, YouTube will be running a test with four partner sites today and tomorrow. The new platform will integrate live streaming directly into YouTube channels, offering a "Live Comments" module for users to communicate with the broadcaster. Broadcasters will simply require either a webcam or external USB/FireWire camera. The four partner sites in the initial test are as follows: Howcast, Next New Networks, Rocketboom, and Young Hollywood.
