New Report Shows that People Keep Their Cellphones for Longer
I know the latest fashion is to have a new phone just about as often as a new one launches that garners your attention. That doesn't seem to be the case for as many people as we may like to think, as a new study from J.D. Power and Associates shows that more people are keeping their cell phones for a longer length of time. The length of time has actually increased by seventeen percent from 2009, with the average person keeping their phone for nearly twenty and a half months. That is the longest length of time since the study started in 1999, and the average then was only seventeen months. The senior director for wireless services at J.D. Power and Associates believes it has to do with the current economy and how people may not want to spend their money on a phone as often as before. Plus there is also the possibility that people are holding on to their phones longer because of the upcoming 4G/LTE network that will be rolling out widespread next year. Why get a phone now on 3G when you could get one on the even faster 4G connection before long? Then there is also the fact that the average bill is $78 compared to $69 just three years ago. More money for a bill means less money for a new phone, especially when your bill may increase due to a new phone. What are your thoughts on this recent trend?

BlackBerry Tablet Official, Named the PlayBook
It didn't take long for RIM, makers of the BlackBerry, to formally unveil its tablet. It had been rumored for ages and now it is finally official as it was shown off during a developer event put on by Research In Motion. The tablet will be called the PlayBook and features the Cortex A9 chip as the powerhouse. That is a dual-core chip running at 1GHz and will be paired with 1GB of RAM. The display is a 7 inch, 1024x600 touchscreen though to me it could almost be larger if it wasn't for the massive bezel on the tablet. The operating system powering the whole thing will be called the BlackBerry Tablet OS and is designed by QNX. It will feature app switching, e-reader functionality, full document editing, and pairing with BlackBerry phones. There is support on the PlayBook for WebKit/HTML 5, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe Mobile AIR, Adobe Reader, POSIX, OpenGL, and Java. The tablet will be able to display 1080p HD video and will feature microHDMI and microUSB ports, along with front and rear HD cameras. The whole thing will be 9.7mm thick and will weigh less than one pound. Currently it will only work through 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi but 3G and 4G models are planned for the future. Since there is support for OpenGL it appears that RIM is targeting the gamers with the PlayBook though how much support there will be depends entirely on app developers.
The RIM PlayBook is expected to ship in the early part of 2011 though no mention was made of a retail price.
