Microsoft Expands Zune Service Internationally
The time has finally come when Microsoft is seeing fit to expand its Zune services internationally as it announced a slew of new features for a variety of countries with the launch of version 4.7 of the Zune software. The software is preceding the launch of Windows Phone 7 and will enable desktop sync on those devices. However, the Zune Marketplace is launching in twenty countries but it gets a bit complicated outside the UK and France. The Zune Pass subscription service will debut in the UK, France, Italy, and Spain for £8.99 or €9.99 a month and will offer unlimited streaming of music. Unlike the US version however, you will not be able to keep ten tracks a month. Music purchases are arriving in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. Any music purchased will be in the MP3 format so anything supporting that will be able to play the songs. Video purchases will be hitting the UK, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Playback of the videos will be allowed on any PC, Xbox 360, and Windows Phone 7 devices. Video rentals are hitting even more markets than the purchases as Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Mexico join the already named countries from the video purchase access. Like the purchases, rentals can be played on any PC, Xbox 360, and Windows Phone 7 device.

Google to Bring Docs Editing to iPad
Google announced today that users will soon be able to access and edit their Google Docs on the Apple iPad, as part of an initiative to expand the number of devices that can access the popular service. Google appears to be targeting mobile devices at this time, and had also ran successful tests on the Android OS. iPad users can currently view the Docs, but editing capability escapes them. Google also demonstrated Docs-to-Office integration which will provide better compatibility between Google Docs and Microsoft Office, and could compete with Microsoft SharePoint. I personally would like to see a nice app for Google Docs on Android sometime soon.

Facebook Rumored To Be Developing a Phone
Facebook is extremely popular and has millions of users around the world. What if it could find a way to get even more exposure with its users? It could accomplish exactly that if the rumors of a Facebook phone are true. It has been reported that two high level Facebook employees with extensive operating system experience are secretly working on the project, a project that most of the company doesn't even know about. Facebook would provide the software for the phone, and would seek out a hardware vendor such as HTC or Motorola to build the phone. Nothing is known for certain at this point, and it is unclear if the phone will even see a release. Speculation is that the phone would feature lower end hardware and a small price tag to increase adoption. Stay tuned for further updates.

Google's Android Surpasses Microsoft in US Smartphone Market
It seems Google's Android operating system is starting to really pick up steam as it has just passed Microsoft for number three in the US smartphone market. Back in April, Android was behind Microsoft by the smallest of margins and now it has overtaken Microsoft. In April, Android held 12% of the market while Microsoft had 14%. In July, Android jumped up to 17% while Microsoft dropped to 11.8% which is a 5% gain for Android in those three months compared to a 2.2% drop for Microsoft. Android still trails Apple by nearly 7% though Android is gaining ground slowly. However, both RIM and Apple dropped during those three months, the same with Microsoft. RIM dropped from 41.1% to 39.3%, a difference of 1.8%, while Apple went from 25.1% to 23.8%, a difference of 1.3%. Android was the only platform to increase during those three months so take from it what you will. Maybe Windows Phone 7 will help gain some ground for Microsoft, but then Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) will be bringing support for heavy 3D gaming so it will be anyone's guess as to what each platform 's market share will be by then.
