Amazon Web Services adds PHP development kit

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has released a toolkit to make it easier to develop applications in PHP that will run on Amazon's cloud, the company said on Wednesday.
Using the AWS SDK for PHP, which works with PHP 5.2 or later versions, developers can build applications that use different parts of Amazon's cloud, including Simple Storage Service (S3), Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) for computing capacity, and the SimpleDB database.

Dell expands VIS to help manage the virtual data center
Dell hopes to expand its role in data centers beyond that of a low-cost hardware provider by offering a set of products for managing a virtual infrastructure.
Through acquisitions, partnerships, and some of its own development work, Dell has been assembling a set of software products called the Virtual Integrated System, which it says will make it easier for companies to provision and manage both physical and virtual servers, networks and storage.

IBM buys Blade in a bid for data center dollars
IBM announced that it is purchasing Ethernet switch maker Blade Networks. The move is the latest in IBM's 2010 buying frenzy, and continues the consolidation of the tech industry--pitting IBM, Cisco, HP, and Dell head to head in a variety of markets.

Rhomobile brings iPhone app dev to Windows PCs
Mobile application development tools vendor Rhomobile plans to unveil on Wednesday an extension to its software-as-a-service platform that will enable developers to build applications for Apple's iPhone via a Windows PC.
The RhoHub cloud platform now lets developers on both Macs and Windows boxes build native applications for iPhone, RIM BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Google Android phones, Rhomobile said. Previously, iPhone development was restricted to Apple's Mac.

CA Technologies to buy Hyperformix
CA Technologies has entered into a formal agreement to purchase capacity management software provider Hyperformix, which is based in Austin, Texas, the two companies announced Tuesday.
CA plans to use the technologies to strengthen its virtualization offerings, CA officials said. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Update: OpenOffice.org developers break ties with Oracle
Some developers of the OpenOffice.org desktop productivity suite announced a break from Oracle on Tuesday, introducing a new name for the project and establishing a new foundation to guide its future.
They will distribute a version of the open-source office productivity suite under the name "LibreOffice," under the purview of an independent organization called The Document Foundation.
