Global 'IT debt' hits $500 billion, on the way to $1 trillion

Global "IT debt" will reach $500 billion this year and could rise to $1 trillion by 2015, Gartner analysts have estimated.
IT debt is essentially the cost of maintenance needed to bring all applications up to date. Five-hundred billion dollars would be needed to clear "the backlog of maintenance … required to bring the corporate applications portfolio to a fully supported current release state,"  Gartner says.

Industry standards arrive for testing SSD endurance, reliability
The leading developer of standards for the microelectronics industry today announced new metrics for determining the endurance and reliability of solid-state drives (SSD), allowing users to more easily select the best products for applications.
The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association said that its standards subcommittee has published two standards for SSDs: JESD218 Solid-State Drive (SSD) Requirements and Endurance Test Method and JESD219 Solid-State Drive Endurance Workloads.

Cisco releases critical IOS security patches
Cisco has released its twice-yearly set of security updates for its switches and routers.
There are six advisories in all, each one covering a different component of the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS), which powers the routers. They cover IOS components such as Cisco's VPN software, the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), and Internet Group Management Protocol, and Network Address Translation (NAT) software.

SAP rolls out wave of 'rapid deployment' apps
SAP is unleashing a set of "Rapid Deployment" software applications that can be rolled out in as little as 12 weeks, the company announced Wednesday.
The products include a combination of software, services, and content at a predefined cost, and they can be run on-premise or hosted by SAP or its partners. Subscription pricing is available for the applications, which will be launched initially in North America and German-speaking countries, SAP said.

Oracle links ADF development technology to Eclipse
Oracle plans to make its ADF (Application Development Framework) technology available to software developers who use the Eclipse IDE, thus providing them with productivity benefits, an Oracle official said on Wednesday.
The company will add ADF design time capabilities to its Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, which plugs into the Eclipse IDE and is geared to application development for the Oracle WebLogic Server Java application server, said Ted Farrell, Oracle chief architect and senior vice president.

Third-party code putting companies at risk
The use of third-party code in applications represents a big security risk for companies, according to a study from security vendor Veracode.
Companies often use code libraries that have been developed from either open-source projects or outsourcing organizations that have been contracted to create applications, said Jason Steer, a solutions architect for Veracode, which specializes in scanning code for vulnerabilities.
