Novell tackles private cloud vendor lock-in
With its Cloud Manager software released on Monday, Novell hopes to address the vendor lock-in problem facing enterprises building private clouds.
Cloud Manager allows IT staff to manage virtualized resources that may be based on different hypervisors, including VMware, Microsoft's Hyper-V, and Xen virtual servers, all from a single management tool, according to Novell.

Adobe adds HTML5 controls to Illustrator
Adobe Systems has released an add-on package for its Illustrator CS5 design editor that will allow developers to export their designs to the Web and mobile platforms, using the emerging HTML5 set of Web formats.
With these capabilities, designers can build out a visual display once and export it to multiple platforms, such as Web pages, smartphones and tablets, as well as for print media, said Adobe senior product manager David Macy.

Hewlett-Packard announced Monday that it has agreed to purchase security vendor ArcSight for $1.5 billion. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year

ArcSight sells a well-regarded product that gives system administrators a way to monitor their networks and activity logs for signs of hacking or unauthorized activity.
