iSuppli: iPod Nano Materials Cost $43.73
The good folks over at market research firm iSuppli picked apart Apple's latest iPod Nano, going through the parts piece by piece to come up with a true cost of materials. The final tally? Just $43.73, which only applies to the parts, and not the cost of labor, the so-called Apple Tax, and everything else that jacks up the price more than three-fold in the retail sector. "Instead of piling on features, as so many brands do with their latest products, Apple with the sixth-generation iPod has maintained or even

LG Debuts Xnote A510 3D Notebook
3D, 3D, 3D. You can't look around the consumer electronics world for 10 whole seconds without something popping out at you that requires 3D glasses, and now LG is joining the fun. We have still yet to see if 3D will take off the way marketing companies hope it will, particularly in the PC space. But LG is hoping that 3D gaming and 3D movie watching take off in the notebook arena, and that their new Xnote A510 will see lots of attention.

The machine has a 15.6" 3D LED LCD display, a Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce graphics (GT 425M with 1GB of DDR3 memory), and it ships with a set of clip-on 3D lenses in case you already own norml glasses. It also has SRS TruSurround HD audio, and for 2D content you have, there's the TriDef 2D-to-3D conversion software. LG plans to start shipping this in Asia, South America, the Middle East and Africa starting in October, with a U.S. version likely on the horizon.

LG Introduces World's First Near Full HD 3D Notebook

Seoul September 28, 2010 -- LG Electronics (LG) today announced the world's first premium notebook offering cinematic 3D experience at near Full HD quality. To deliver an immersive 3D experience while rendering high-quality movies, games and graphics, the LG A510 features a hardware combination never before offered on a notebook: 15.6-inch Full HD 3D LED LCD display powered by Intel? Coreâ„¢ i7 Processor and NVIDIA? GeForce? GT 425M graphics card with 1GB of dedicated DDR3 video memory.

"3D is increasingly becoming a common part of the home entertainment landscape so it's against this backdrop that we're working to make this technology better and more accessible for consumers," said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "As more and more people consume content and interact via portable screens, we think this is a natural next step for business travelers, college students and small office/home office owners. And we put the entire package in a beautifully-designed chassis because we don't think high-tech has to be a dull grey pizza box."

The A510 ships with polarized glasses for easier portability. A set of clip-on 3D lenses are also included for regular glasses-wearers. Beyond the visual, the notebook boasts SRS TruSurround HD for the ultimate immersive audio experience for movies and games.

With much of the content in the 3D world still in development, LG equipped the notebook with TriDef software which converts 2D into 3D content on demand. Using TriDef, viewers can see all their favorite shows and movies in up-converted 3D as soon as their LG A510 is unboxed.

This high-tech workhorse also boasts a unique design that is sure to please both tech-savvy and style-conscious consumers. An attractive metallic look with unique exterior finish and subtle LED lighting around the touchpad that changes color according to the system status add a distinctive look. The LG A510 is available in two colors: blue-black and champagne gold.

The LG A510 offers additional convenience with a collection of smart features and applications. The LG Smart Pack, LG's unique software suite for notebooks, always ensures that the LG A510 is operating at peak performance. And a LED fingerprint reader can be programmed to provide quick and easy access to the most frequently used programs and websites, while also making it easier to log in.

LG will roll out this premium notebook in Asia, South America, the Middle East and Africa starting in October 2010.

Verizon Wireless Now Offers Lost Phone Tracking, Remote Kill
Worried that you'll lose your phone? Worried that you have no way to trace it or wipe it if it were to vanish before your very eyes? Apple has a solution for that called "Find my iPhone." It comes with each new iPhone so long as you activate a $99/year MobileMe service, and it lets users track their phone via GPS and remotely disable it if a thief were to swipe it. But no other phone nor carrier offers an exact alternative to that.

Until this service became live. Verizon Wireless has just announced a new facet of their Total Equipment Coverage Program called Mobile Recovery, and it's a new application designed to run on WebOS, Android and BlackBerry smartphones. Nearly all of VZW's major smartphones are capable of running the app, and when programmed, this will allow users to emotely lock the device, sound an alarm and wipe contacts from the phone. If the phone is not recovered, Total Equipment Coverage provides next-day replacement.

Below are the exact details on what the app can do:
  • Sound Alarm – Customers trying to find a lost phone can use the “Sound Alarm” feature which triggers an alarm, even if the phone is on silent or vibrate mode.
  • Locate Phone – If the phone is outside audible range, customers no longer have to retrace their steps looking for it. As long as the phone is powered on and within Verizon Wireless’ coverage area, the “Locate Phone” feature uses GPS to provide the location of the missing phone, complete with a map and address, and the option to get turn-by-turn directions.
  • Secure Phone – Once customers have determined their phone is lost, they can use the “Device Remote Lock” feature to prevent unauthorized use, or the “Device Remote Wipe” feature to remotely erase contacts from the device.

Basically, this coverage is included for "free" if you're already paying $10/month for Total Equipment Coverage. If you aren't, this may be the convincing you needed to start paying the fee. Looked at by the year, this actually costs more than $30 more than Apple's service, but it includes more than just lost phone tracking. If you tend to lose your belongings a lot, this may be worth the investment.

Sharp Launching Two E-Readers And A Bookstore This December
The e-reader market is continuing to explode, despite the fact that tablets have taken over as the major hype machine in the consumer electronics business. Kindle sales have been hotter than ever, and companies are still thinking up ways to rival both it and the iPad. Look at Sharp for example, which has just revealed two new e-reader tablets in very different sizes, both of which are likely to rival the iPad and Kindle in different ways.

In conjunction with an e-Bookstore announcement, Sharp has unveiled a new 5.5" and 10.8" e-reader. The 5.5" version is designed for pockets, and it's one of the smallest e-readers we have seen to date. It has a 1024x600 screen resolution, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a nav trackball and support for Sharp's incoming e-Bookstore. The 10.8" model is mostly the same except for a nicer 1366x800 screen resolution.

Both of the hardware devices are reserved for Japan at this point, but if sales are up, there is always a chance that Sharp will bring them to other parts of the world. The GALAPAGOS cloud-based media service is just yet another "app store" of sorts, and it will be launching this December with the two e-readers. Features like Automatic Scheduled Delivery Service for magazines and free trial versions of recommended e-book content are highlights, but again, there is no plan to move it from Japan at the moment.

Sharp to start first E-bookstore Service from December with "GALAPAGOS" E-Book Reader

Launch of Cloud-Based Media Service Business Offering a New User Experience

Sharp Corporation will launch a new cloud-based media service business, named "GALAPAGOS", to provide a new user experience, while evolving to meet each customer's changing needs with a network service and device specifically designed for the Japanese market. The first effort in this area will be an e-bookstore service that is planned to begin in December of this year. Two compatible tablet terminals have been developed specifically as e-book readers and will be introduced at the same time.

This new e-bookstore provides an "Automatic Scheduled Delivery Service" (fee-based service) for periodical publications. The most recent editions of newspapers and magazines a user has subscribed to can be delivered and read by the user's e-book readers. In addition, free trial versions of recommended e-book content can also be delivered to the e-book reader, letting users immediately purchase content of their favor.

Two models of the e-book readers have been developed - a mobile type featuring a 5.5-inch LCD screen that reads like a paperback book, and a home type featuring a 10.8-inch high-resolution HD LCD that allows users to enjoy magazines formatted across a two-page spread.

Sharp will continue to provide for evolving e-book lifestyles by further enriching the content available through the service, and by expanding the functions of compatible terminal devices.

E-bookstore Service (overview)

Start of service December, 2010 (Planned)
Content lineup (at time of launch) Approx. 30,000 newspapers, magazines, and books
* Details of the service, such as content and price are scheduled to be announced separately in conjunction with the start of the service.

E-book Reader/Tablet Terminal (overview)

Nickname GALAPAGOS

Mobile type
5.5-inch LCD
(1,024 × 600 pixels)

Home type
10.8-inch
(1,366 × 800 pixels)

Communication function Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11b/g)
* Details about the e-book readers, including the specific date of introduction, will be announced separately.

Major Features

1. "Automatic Scheduled Delivery Service" for periodical publications, including newspapers and magazines. Content from the most recent editions can be delivered and read whenever desired.
2. Rich graphic capabilities and an easy-to-use interface that give full consideration to the book culture of Japan.
3. "Evolution" of the terminal devices with periodic software updates.
"GALAPAGOS" was chosen as the name for Sharp's cloud-based media service business, as a symbol of the "evolution" of services and terminal devices that constantly bring fresh, new experiences to the user. The name comes from the famous Galapagos Islands, which were visited by Charles Darwin (1809–1882), a British geologist and biologist. The observations he made while on the islands played a key role in the formulation of his "theory of evolution".

Major Features

1. "Automatic Scheduled Delivery Service" for periodical publications, including newspapers and magazines. Content from the most recent editions can be read whenever desired.
- Users can receive and enjoy the most recent editions of newspapers and magazines, automatically delivered at a pre-arranged time. (Prior service registration subject to fees is required)
- The users can categorize and organize the downloaded content by categories, including "unread / recommended", "most recently read", "favorite", and "scheduled delivery".
- The free trial version of e-book content will be automatically delivered from the e-book store. Contents that the users find interesting can be purchased immediately.
- The downloaded content will be stored on an e-book, and users can enjoy the e-book content even in a place without wireless network services.

2. Rich graphic capabilities and easy-to-use interface that give full consideration to the book culture of Japan.
- Complies with XMDF e-book format, to support Japanese expressions such as vertical writing and ruby. When users enlarged content on previous mobile terminals, the display needed to be scrolled to see the content fully. Content complying with XMDF format enables adapting to a change of font sizes without altering the content and picture layout.

3. Evolution of the terminal devices with periodic software updates.
- Automatic software updates of the media tablet will enable users to enjoy not just XMDF format content, but other e-book content services also, including various software applications. Users can enjoy the evolution of terminal devices with periodic software updates.

Other Features

- Track ball feature in the mobile type with 5.5-inch screen. Users can rotate the track ball like a PC mouse and can flip the pages with one hand.
- Sharp's e-book application software for PC "GALAPAGOS Station" enables users to organize downloaded content on PCs. Users can mark and add comments on the e-book content.
- PC data, including documents and maps, can be converted to XMDF format, and can be viewed on the media tablet.
- Web browser will display websites for PCs on a high resolution LCD screen.
- Pre-installed social network service application enables sharing readers' comments and e-book list with friends.

RIM Unveils Its PlayBook Tablet
As expected, RIM on Monday unveiled its tablet at the company's 2010 DevCon conference. RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis channeled Apple CEO Steve Jobs with a sort of “one more thing” moment, saving the announcement for the end of his keynote address. Lazaridis described the PlayBook (not the rumored BlackPad) as “the first professional tablet.”

The PlayBook will not run the company's recented released BlackBerry OS 6. Instead, as also expected, it will run a POSIX-based QNX OS called the BlackBerry Tablet OS. RIM acquired QNX earlier this year.

Here are the specs of the device. Much of the hardware specs are pretty much the same as most of the tablets, sans iPad, that we have seen announced of late (incl. the same 7" screen).
  • 7″ LCD, 1024 x 600 WSVGA, capacitive touch screen with full multi-touch and gesture support
  • BlackBerry Tablet OS with support for symmetric multiprocessing
  • 1 GHz dual-core processor
  • 1 GB RAM
  • Dual cameras (3 MP front-facing, 5 MP rear-facing), supporting 1080p HD video recording
  • Video playback: 1080p HD Video, H.264, MPEG, DivX, WMV
  • Audio playback: MP3, AAC, WMA
  • HDMI video output
  • 802.11n wi-fi
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • microHDMI, microUSB connectors
  • Open, flexible application platform with support for WebKit/HTML-5, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe Mobile AIR, Adobe Reader, POSIX, OpenGL, Java

  • Weight: less than a pound (approximately 0.9 lb or 400g)

Also as was rumored, the initial version of the PlayBook will not ship with built-in cellular connectivity. Instead, users need to pair the device with their BlackBerry phones (via Bluetooth) when out of range of wi-fi. The company's press release says it "intends to also offer 3G and 4G models in the future."

The PlayBook is expected to ship in early 2011 for the U.S., and internationally in Q2 2011. No pricing was announced.

Also announced, but overshadowed, in Lazaridis' keynote: in-app payments for BlackBerry apps, a BlackBerry Advertising Service and the opening of BBM as a social platform.

Finally, there was a later announcement from a partner of RIMs.  It was from a company that has a lot invested in seeing alternatives to the iPad succeed. Amazon.com announced it would be supporting the PlayBook with a Kindle app.  An Amazon spokesperson said “We’re very excited to add the new BlackBerry PlayBook to that list. As with our other Kindle apps, the BlackBerry PlayBook app will be free and will incorporate our WhisperSync technology so you can seamlessly switch between devices.“

Target Officially Selling Apple iPad Starting October 3
Another rumor confirmed. The Apple iPad, which has been flying off of Apple's own shelves for months now, finally has enough extra stock to find itself on other shelves. As was rumored weeks ago, the mega-retailer Target will begin to sell the tablet starting on October 3. It will be a nationwide rollout, and Target customers will be able to select from all of the possible models, including the Wi-Fi + 3G models that will require activation with AT&T from home.

Mark Schindele, senior vice president, merchandising, Target, was understandably excited to announce the news: "Target is very excited to offer the revolutionary iPad to our guests nationwide. We are committed to providing our guests with the best products and we think iPad will be at the top of our guests’ holiday shopping lists."

This couldn't come at a more perfect time for Apple and Target. Target will benefit from huge impulse buy sales when customers wander over into the electronics section while doing their holiday shopping, and Apple has yet another huge supply channel to sell through. Far more consumers visit Target stores than Apple stores, and since Target already sold iPods, this just seems like a natural fit. We only wonder if the Android and Windows 7 tablets to come will have a similarly great distribution chain lined up...

Target Offers iPad at Stores Nationwide on October 3

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today Target® announced it will carry iPad™ in 1,743 Target stores nationwide beginning Oct. 3, 2010. Target guests can select from a range of iPad models, including the 16GB Wi-Fi model starting at $499.99, the 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi+3G models.

“Target is very excited to offer the revolutionary iPad to our guests nationwide”

“Target is very excited to offer the revolutionary iPad to our guests nationwide,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, merchandising, Target. “We are committed to providing our guests with the best products and we think iPad will be at the top of our guests’ holiday shopping lists.”

iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. Users can browse the web, read and send e-mail, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music or play games, and read e-books, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch™ interface. iPad with Wi-Fi+3G models are just 0.5 inches thick and weigh just 1.6 pounds – thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook - and deliver up to 10 hours of battery life for surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching videos or listening to music, and up to nine hours of surfing the web using a 3G data network.*

A selection of accessories including cases, iBook and iTunes gift cards, chargers and more, will be available in the electronics department at Target along with iPad.

Microsoft Renegs on Windows Phone 7 Tethering Claims
Talk about a sike out. Just last week, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 chief, Brandon Watson, said it would be up to each wireless carrier whether or not to support tethering on the new mobile platform at launch. As it turns out, he was wrong, and we're officially bummed.

"A company spokeswoman told Electronista that statements from Microsoft's own Brandon Watson weren't correct and that the OS wouldn't support tethering in any form on launch," Electronista reports.

Paul Thurrott, who's often privy to what goes on in Redmond, said essentially the same thing: "To be clear: Windows Phone 7 does not support tethering at all."

Tethering allows a user to set up their smartphone or other mobile device as a hotspot, so even if there's no open Wi-Fi available, you can still hop on the net by 'tethering' your laptop to your smartphone. It's a handy feature to have, not just for traveling, but at home if/when your Internet goes down for any reason.

Looks like we'll have to make do without this feature on the Windows Phone 7, at least until someone mods it and kicks off the third-party ROM party that's sure to follow.

New Left 4 Dead DLC "The Sacrifice" Coming October 5
LEFT 4 DEAD "THE SACRIFICE" COMING OCTOBER 5

Latest DLC Coming to Both L4D1 & L4D2
September 27, 2010 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the new add-on for its co-operative zombie thrillers -- "The Sacrifice," in development for both Left 4 Dead (L4D) and Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) -- is due for release on October 5, 2010.

"The Sacrifice" is the prequel to "The Passing," and takes place from the L4D Survivors' perspective as they make their way South. In addition to advancing the story, "The Sacrifice" introduces a new style finale featuring "Sacrificial Gameplay" where players get to decide who will give their life so the others may live.

The Sacrifice DLC for L4D1 is a seperate download than The Sacrifice for L4D2.
In The Sacrifice for Left 4 Dead 1 gamers receive the complete Sacrifice campaign with maps playable in Campaign, Versus, and Survival.

In The Sacrifice for Left 4 Dead 2 owners receive "The Sacrifice" campaign playable with the Left 4 Dead Survivors. In addition, those with Left 4 Dead 2 receive L4D's "No Mercy" campaign. Both campaigns are playable in Campaign, Versus, Survival, and Scavenge modes and both will feature the Left 4 Dead 2 Special Infected, items, and weapons. Yes, Zoey with a chainsaw!

Targeted for release on October 5th, "The Sacrifice" will be available for download on Xbox Live for 560 Microsoft Points and free to all PC gamers.

Activision/Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick's Latest Great Idea
Covering the declarations of Bobby Kotick is a bit like monitoring the behavior of an active volcano. It's impossible to predict exact when he'll blow, but when he inevitably does, the event will blast molten stupid in every direction. The man's latest bright idea is to charge for cutscenes. This wouldn't affect in-game play, but would be an out-of-game option. Here's what Bobby envisions, in his own words.
If we were to go to an audience and say ‘We have this great hour and a half of linear video that we'd like to make available to you at a $20 or $30 price point’ you'd have the biggest opening weekend of any film ever,” he told an audience at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference in California, as reported by IGN.

Within the next five years, you are likely to see us do that. It might be in a partnership with somebody or alone, but there will be a time where we'll capitalise on the relationship we have with our audience; deliver them something that is really extraordinary and let them consume it directly through us instead of theatrical distribution. “If we were to deliver a film digitally this way, I'd say an extremely high percentage would then go to the theater and watch it again," Kotick concluded.
Blizzard has a long history of producing top-notch cutscenes and the moderate financial success of film tie-ins like Final Fantasy: Advent Children has established a certain precedent. Given a sufficiently large fan base and a decent story, CGI game movies can succeed. A film based on characters from Starcraft 2, if well executed, could be a huge hit, particularly in South Korea. The idea is solid—the cost structure isn't.

It's kinda like this.

Bobby couldn't be more wrong when he predicts his $20-30 movie would break box office records. What it would actually break is the Internet, with thousands of people rushing to download a blurry screen-captured version of the film. We might pay that much for a full DVD/Blu-ray version of the film, with the usual goodies and commentary that come with such versions, but never in a theater. The reason Kotick is backing this horse boils down to profit. According to the CEO, "My guess is unlike film studios that are really stuck with a model that goes through theatrical distribution and takes a signification amount of the profit away."

At the envisioned price point a Starcraft movie is a disaster waiting to happen, but it's also par for the course for a man who wanted to jack the price of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 higher than the initial $54.95, wants a piece of XBox Live revenue (claiming that 60 percent of players are on it to play CoD), believes workers should constantly fear for their job security, and measures game value solely by profit. The one upside to Kotick's stewardship is that Blizzard's own game quality doesn't appear to have been impacted. Starcraft 2 was a top-notch production; our experience with the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm beta suggests it'll be polished to the same sheen.
