AMD Follows Intel; Warns On Q3 Profits
When Intel announced it would miss its Q3 targets in late August, there was speculation as to whether or not AMD would escape the same fate. With the third quarter having officially ended, the answer is no. According to a statement the company made late last week, revenue will be down 1-4.5 percent compared to second-quarter revenue of 1.65 billion. AMD didn't provide much detail on the change, saying only: "The sequential decrease is due to weaker than expected demand, particularly in the consumer notebook

DirectX10 and 11 on Linux

This means that programs on Linux can pass DirectX 10, 10.1 and 11 calls directly, without the overhead of converting them to OpenGL first.
The question that immediately comes to my mind is, will Wine ever use it? I don't think Gallium's available for the Mac, and they've been completely against implementing anything that wouldn't be 100% cross-platform. I'm not sure it would even help gaming much anyway, as most games are DX9, and that's already supported pretty well in Wine's current OpenGL conversion code.

Stuxnet 'Industrial Virus' Hits Iran Hard
A sophisticated computer virus that targets solely Siemens SCADA, or "supervisory control and data acquisition," systems, has infiltrated systems across the globe, and has hit Iran "very hard." The Stuxnet virus has reportedly struck industrial sites throughout Iran, including its nuclear facilities.SCADA systems are commonly used to manage oil rigs, power plants, water facilities, and other industrial plants. Stuxnet was first identified this summer, but the Windows vulnerability exploited by the malware was first described in April of 2009. Microsoft confirmed earlier this week that it "overlooked" the vulnerability when it was revealed last year. Two of the four vulnerabilities exploited by the worm were patched in this month's Patch Tuesday.
At the same time, on Saturday, it was reported that the United States knows neither the source nor the purpose of Stuxnet. It should be noted that for some time there has been concern that attackers may one day hack into or attack (via malware) the infrastructure of countries, and the attack on Siemens systems fits right into that mold.
The vulnerability of these Windows-based systems that aren't personal computers, but have the same exploits available has been expressed before as well. Often, these systems, which also include print servers and anything Windows-based, are not protected by antivirus software, and are not regularly patched.
Sean McGurk, director of the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) said,
"One of our hardest jobs is attribution and intent. We've conducted analysis on the software itself. It's very difficult to say 'This is what it was targeted to do.' "We know that it's not doing anything specifically malicious right now. It would be premature to speculate at this time. "We're not looking for where it came from but trying to prevent the spread."McGurk added that Siemens is "reaching out to their customer base" to help deal with the infection.
The sophistication of the malware has led to some speculation by security experts that it was created by state-sponsored developers or some sort of state secret service. Based on its state-sponsored hackers or a state secret service. The malware has also been reported in Indonesia, Pakistan, India and more and thus, it is unclear that Iran was a primary target. However, the sheer number of systems in Iran that have been hit by Stuxnet is out-of-bounds with the rest of the infection statistics.

According to German computer security researcher Ralph Langner, who has been analyzing Stuxnet since it was discovered in June, Stuxnet is able to recognize a specific facility's control network and then destroy it. He believes Stuxnet's primary target was the Bushehr nuclear facility in Iran. That plant was built with Russian help, but unspecified problems have delayed its operation.

Microsoft Declares It's Time To Focus On PC Gaming
It's been a few years since Microsoft paid much attention to the PC gaming industry, but someone apparently wandered past the sole employee in the PC gaming devision and kicked him a few times. With Halo Reach released and Kinect in the launch tube, MS has announced it wants to "push the business model into new directions." The problem, according to the software giant, is that it isn't seen as the industry leader or trendsetter that it wants to be.
Hi everyone, this is Steve from our Windows Gaming Division.
There’s been a fair bit of criticism aimed at Microsoft that we were spending a lot of our focus on console, and we need to be putting resources behind PC as well,†Microsoft Games Studios’ general manager Dave Luehmann told MCV in an interview. "Other companies should look to Microsoft for leadership, but I’m not sure they do. It is our job to lead the way on PC. And in some ways we are doing that and in other ways we are not. So we need to step up. "We are putting some real investment and big IPs behind the Windows platform. We’ve spoken of the first three, Fable III, Age of Empires Online and Microsoft Flight. However we are not going to stop there."
Microsoft hasn't taken a substantial interest in gaming since it launched the Games For Windows brand in 2006. Four years on, GfW Live is free to use and offers similar functionality to XBox Live, but doesn't allow PC gamers to take on their console counterparts directly. The biggest single problem with GfW, from our perspective, is that gamers have no reason to prefer it. MS could potentially build momentum around certain features that Steam doesn't offer, but for gamers, being forced to login to yet another service before playing is nothing but annoying. The best way for Microsoft to push PC gaming would be for the company to mandate quality PC ports from console titles (or vice versa), ensuring that both graphics and gameplay take advantage of a computer's superior processing power.Â

Google and Schmidt Convicted of Defamation, in French Court
A French court has convicted Google and CEO Eric Schmidt for defamation. The ruling came as a result of Google's Suggest function, which brought up terms such as "rapist" and "satanist" when people Googled the plaintiff's name. The man who filed the lawsuit had been previously convicted of “corruption of a minor.†However, the case is under appeal, meaning it's not final. The man discovered the results on entering his name in a Google search. The Suggest function does what it sounds like, suggests additional terms for the searcher.
The ruling was made by the Paris high court on Sept. 8. Legalis.net, an aggregator of French legal decisions, has the decision in full. The ruling (translated) said, in part:
supporting the association of these words is a public defamation of an individual, regardless of the content of articles or documents which refer such requests,Google has vowed to appeal the ruling, and has said in its defense that the Google Suggest algorithm returns results based on the most common terms used in the past with a query entered. Thus, the company said, it was not Google itself that was making the suggestions.

In February, an Italian court convicted three Google executives of violating Italy's privacy code, in a case related to video posted in late 2006 on Google Video (not YouTube). The uploaded video showed the bullying of a boy with Down's Syndrome. Those executives received suspended six month sentences.

Six Silicon Valley Tech Firms Forced To Halt Anti-Competitive Hiring Blocks
Wow, this is odd. According to a new report today from the United States Department of Justice, six very well recognized silicon valley companies are have their hands slapped by a very powerful entity. The DoJ has mandated that six companies stop entering into anti-competitive employee solicitation agreements, which they have apparently been doing for as many as 5 years.
It sounds like the six companies have agreed to comply, as the DoJ filed a lawsuit but says that the accompanying agreement should cover that. You're probably dying to know who exactly has been named here, so here goes: Adobe Systems Inc., Apple Inc., Google Inc., Intel Corp., Intuit Inc. and Pixar. We're pretty sure you have heard of all six if you're here reading this site. According to investigations by the DoJ, these six companies were mixed up in agreements that forbid one company from calling another company's employee(s) in order to run any job offers by them. For example, Apple could not call Google employees and see if they'd like a different/better job at Apple, and vice-versa.
Obviously, the DoJ doesn't look kindly on those kinds of arrangements, and they said that the agreements eliminated a significant form of competition to attract highly skilled employees, and overall diminished competition to the detriment of affected employees who were likely deprived of competitively important information and access to better job opportunities. The agreements between Apple and Google, Apple and Adobe, Apple and Pixar and Google and Intel were said to have "prevented the companies from directly soliciting each other’s employees."
Anyway, it sounds like all six companies have agreed to halt these type of arrangements, but we have to wonder if any punishment will be issued. And who knows what this will do to the potential job market in Silicon Valley.
The department said in its complaint:
Beginning no later than 2006, Apple and Google executives agreed not to cold call each other’s employees.  Apple placed Google on its internal “Do Not Call List,†which instructed employees not to directly solicit employees from the listed companies.  Similarly, Google listed Apple among the companies that had special agreements with Google and were part of the “Do Not Cold Call†list; Beginning no later than May 2005, senior Apple and Adobe executives agreed not to cold call each other’s employees.  Apple placed Adobe on its internal “Do Not Call List†and similarly, Adobe included Apple in its internal list of “Companies that are off limitsâ€; Beginning no later than April 2007, Apple and Pixar executives agreed not to cold call each other’s employees.  Apple placed Pixar on its internal “Do Not Call List†and senior executives at Pixar instructed human resources personnel to adhere to the agreement and maintain a paper trail; Beginning no later than September 2007, Google and Intel executives agreed not to cold call each other’s employees.  In its hiring policies and protocol manual, Google listed Intel among the companies that have special agreements with Google and are part of the “Do Not Cold Call†list.  Similarly, Intel instructed its human resources staff about the existence of the agreement; and In June 2007, Google and Intuit executives agreed that Google would not cold call any Intuit employee.  In its hiring policies and protocol manual, Google also listed Intuit among the companies that have special agreements with Google and are part of the “Do Not Cold Call†list.ÂThe proposed settlement, which if accepted by the court will be in effect for five years, prohibits the companies from engaging in anticompetitive no solicitation agreements.  Although the complaint alleges only that the companies agreed to ban cold calling, the proposed settlement more broadly prohibits the companies from entering, maintaining or enforcing any agreement that in any way prevents any person from soliciting, cold calling, recruiting, or otherwise competing for employees.  The companies will also implement compliance measures tailored to these practices.
Today’s complaint arose out of a larger investigation by the Antitrust Division into employment practices by high tech firms.  The division continues to investigate other similar no solicitation agreements.
Adobe Systems Inc. is a Delaware corporation with its principal place of business in San Jose, Calif., and 2009 revenues of nearly $3 billion. Â Apple Inc. is a California corporation with its principal place of business in Cupertino, Calif., and 2009 revenues of more than $42 billion. Google Inc. is a Delaware corporation with its principal place of business in Mountain View, Calif., and 2009 revenues of more than $23 billion. Intel Inc. is a Delaware corporation with its principal place of business in Santa Clara, Calif., and 2009 revenues of more than $35 billion. Â Intuit Inc. is a Delaware corporation with its principal place of business in Mountain View, Calif., and 2009 revenues more than $3 billion. Â Pixar is a California corporation with its principal place of business in Emeryville, Calif.
The proposed settlement, along with the department’s competitive impact statement, will be published in The Federal Register, as required by the Antitrust Procedures and Penalties Act.  Any person may submit written comments concerning the proposed settlement within 60 days of its publication to James J. Tierney, Chief, Networks & Technology Enforcement Section, Antitrust Division, U.S. Department of Justice, 450 Fifth Street N.W., Suite 7100, Washington D.C. 20530.  At the conclusion of the 60-day comment period, the court may enter the final judgment upon a finding that it serves the public interest.

Computer Peripheral equipment (also commonly referred to as input - output devices), is any equipment wired or wireless that might be used to give a computer or a set of computers on a computer network more functionality or capability.
Strictly speaking, any device that is not strictly required for the computer to function is called peripheral equipment. As such even the keyboard or mouse is a peripheral device. Although termed “peripheral” computer peripheral equipment is necessary because without it, most computers would be virtually useless.
Most computer or computer hardware manuals label peripheral equipment as an “I/O device”. I/O (input/output) devices are connected to the computer via USB, serial, parallel, bluetooth, Infrared, radio or via Wifi. Examples of I/O devices include the mouse, digital camera, keyboard, scanner, joystick, monitor, printer, speakers etc.

Wi-Fi Seen As Critical To Relationships, Life In General
You always have to watch out for a Wi-Fi survey conducted by the Wi-Fi Alliance, but based on our own experiences, we actually have to agree with the findings here. According to results from a new poll conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of the Wi-Fi Alliance, Wi-Fi is becoming more important than anyone could have imagining just a few years back. It's becoming a way in which we rely on to communicate and keep in touch, particularly among younger adults.
The survey, which gathered responses from more than 1,000 millennials (respondents ages 17 to 29) in the U.S. and 400 millennials in China, Japan and Korea, shows a shift in how we connect with others – both technologically and emotionally. The results illustrate that many respondents find it difficult to keep up with relationships without Wi-Fi access; 64 percent of U.S. respondents and 89 percent of respondents in China said they agreed it would be nearly impossible to maintain relationships with many friends without Wi-Fi; 44 percent of American respondents and 82 percent of Chinese respondents said the same would apply to family relationships.
And listen to this: "For young adults, Wi-Fi-enabled digital devices are now more central to life than television. Two-thirds of respondents in the U.S. and four-fifths of those in China reported they spend more time on Wi-Fi than watching television. Almost half of U.S. respondents (44 percent) first used Wi-Fi when they were 17 or younger. Almost 70 percent of respondents spend four or more hours on a Wi-Fi connection daily. In another telling statistic, 84 percent of respondents in the U.S. and 93 percent in Korea were more likely to carry a handheld digital device than a watch."
And it even gets better. Wi-Fi is becoming less of a luxury and more of a necessity and we live more connected lives, and it's growing harder to live without. Eighty-seven percent of U.S. respondents and 74 percent of those in China reported they need Wi-Fi access in schools and universities, and more than half of U.S. respondents also cited it as a necessity in restaurants and shopping areas. And lest there be any question about how indispensable Wi-Fi has become, 75 percent of U.S. respondents, 64 percent of those in Korea, and 87 percent of China respondents reported they would be grumpier without Wi-Fi access for a week than in a week without coffee or tea.
A survey from last year found that airport Wi-Fi was seen as more important than food in the airport, so the results here aren't that surprising. Now, we just need Wi-Fi to become more pervasive...
