All-Electric Coda Sedan Hitting CA In 2010: $45K
With the classic automakers struggling to make ends meet in America, it's clear that the time has come for a new regime to usher in a new wave of automobiles. With companies such as Tesla and Lightning doing their best to produce affordable, reliable electric cards, neither has actually shown an ability to craft a vehicle that the layperson could afford. Coda Automotive, however, is hoping to add a real option at the lower-end in the electric car space.

Introduced this week, the simply named Coda -- a four door, five passenger sedan with an all-electric drive train -- has been pegged with a 2010 ship date in California. The car was originally designed by one Miles Rubin, and he's remaining an integral part of the launch. Unfortunately, it seems as if the Coda will be restricted for sale in CA for the near term, though if business hits big, we can't imagine the company not expanding its reach.

The electric family car includes enough battery power to travel between 90 and 120 miles on a full charge, and it can regain 40 miles of range with just two hours of charging. It supports energy from any 110 or 220V socket, and a full charge (from 0% to 100%) can be accomplished in as little as six hours. Kevin Czinger, President and CEO, Coda Automotive, had this to say: "The Coda sedan is an all-electric vehicle for everyone. It's a practical revolution for real drivers who need reliable transportation."

The cost of the car is expected to be around $45,000, but the actual cost of ownership will dip much lower after a $7,500 federal credit along with other incentives. Coda Automotive estimates that it will cost less than $3 (on average) to drive 100 miles, whereas a comparable gas-powered sedan would eat up around $17 in fuel costs to drive that same distance. Amenities are everywhere as well, with the factory list of equipment including navigation, Bluetooth, AM/FM/XM radio, USB connectivity and aluminum wheels. The car's even backed by a 3-year, 36,000 mile warranty. So, who's moving to California?

Verbatim has an idea for making sure you never lose another thumb drive. It's another thumb drive. The Store 'n' Go Clip-It USB Drive has received a Red Dot design award, mostly because it's designed to be clipped onto your shirt or belt. In other words, this USB drive goes where you go, so unless you lose your shirt or belt, you won't lose your thumb drive.

It's available in a few different colors, and the company claims that this USB drive has the functionality of a paperclip. It's shipping in 2GB and 4GB capacities, but it's just USB 2.0 for the moment. Still, we love the design. It'll be hard to think of a USB drive not being clipped onto us again, but we guess the whole "key ring" attachment will still work for most. Just don't lose your keys!

Store 'n' Go "Clip-it USB Drive" – Verbatim´s Red dot Award-winning USB Drive

The Verbatim Clip-it USB Drive is now available with storage capacities of 2GB and 4GB.

Clip-it USB Drive can also be used as a paperclip

Red dot 'Best of the Best' award 2010, designed by Arman Emami

Designed by Arman Emami, Clip-it has been awarded the accolade of Red Dot 'Best of the Best' 2010. The Clip-it USB drive makes it easier for you to keep all your data together in one place, whether it is electronic or not. Even the delivery of a classic paper document can now include additional multimedia information stored on this tiny Clip-it USB Drive. Netflix Gets Loads of TV Re-Runs From NBC Universal, More Deals to Come?
Netflix just keeps getting bigger and bigger, and better and better. Cable TV isn't going anywhere soon, but when it does, it will have Netflix to thank for pushing it out of the way. Netflix, and NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution today announced an expanded license agreement through which Netflix members can instantly watch a selection of broadcast series from the NBC television network and – for the first time on Netflix – content from some of NBC Universal's popular cable channels.

The deal includes prior season episodes from NBC, USA, Syfy and Saturday Night Live re-runs, and the new content will be available for viewing starting next week. The exact details of what's being added is below (it's a lot!), but one thing is clear: Netflix isn't laying around satisfied. They're still grasping for new users, and they're still making deals in order to ensure that happens. More importantly, each deal similar to this that Netflix lands makes the next one so much easier to negotiate. It's always hard to crack the first egg, but once media companies begin to get friendly with Netflix, like we said, cable providers may have to rethink their offerings.

Netflix and NBC Universal Announce Agreement to Stream Prior Season Cable and Broadcast TV Series New to Netflix Members

Deal Includes Prior Season Episodes from NBC, USA and Syfy Series As Well as Day-After Broadcast Of "Saturday Night Live"

NEW YORK and BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) and NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution today announced an expanded license agreement through which Netflix members can instantly watch a selection of broadcast series from the NBC television network and – for the first time on Netflix – content from some of NBC Universal's popular cable channels.

The multi-year deal kicks off next week and continues the relationship between Netflix and NBC Universal.

The agreement adds significantly to the growing selection of movies and TV episodes that can be streamed instantly from Netflix with memberships starting at $8.99 a month.  Among the highlights, Netflix members will be able to instantly watch:

    * Episodes from every season of NBC's signature comedy franchise "Saturday Night Live," including day-after broadcast of the upcoming 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons plus hundreds of episodes from the first 35 years of "SNL."
    * Every episode from the last season of the multiple Emmy® Award-winning series "30 Rock," "The Office" and "Law & Order: SVU," as well as earlier seasons of those shows renewed for streaming from Netflix under the current deal.
    * All prior seasons – and eventually next year's final season – of "Friday Night Lights," the small-town drama surrounding high-school football in Dillon, Tex.
    * All prior seasons of USA Network hits "Psych," the comedy featuring James Roday as a fake psychic who solves crimes with his best friend, Dule Hill; the drama "In Plain Sight," starring Mary McCormack as a U.S. Marshal in New Mexico; as well as all seasons of "Monk," starring Emmy® Award and Golden Globe® Award winner Tony Shalhoub in the title role.  Prior seasons of all three shows are available to watch instantly at Netflix for the first time.
    * More than 75 prior season episodes of Syfy's mainstay "Battlestar Galactica," as well as prior seasons of the network's popular series' "Destination Truth" and "Eureka" – all streaming from Netflix for the first time.

"We are very pleased to continue our successful relationship with Netflix," said Frances Manfredi, executive vice president and general sales manager of cable and non-theatrical sales for NBC Universal Domestic TV Distribution, who forged the deal.  "We applaud Netflix for recognizing the value of content like 'SNL,' 'Friday Night Lights,' 'Monk,' and 'Battlestar Galactica' to their subscribers."

"This agreement adds meaningfully to the wide variety of content that can be streamed from Netflix and breaks new ground in our relationship with NBC Universal," said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix.

Solid Line iPad Case Brings Physical Keyboard To iPad
Imagine if the iPad were a hybrid netbook / tablet rather than a tablet alone. Imagine if the iPad shipped with a keyboard. Imagine if the iPad could shift into a netbook of sorts with just the turn of a case? It's not likely that Apple will ever ship an iPad like that, but Solid Line Products has the next best alternative. The company has just released their new all-in-one leather case / Bluetooth keyboard for the iPad, and it will be shipping next week.

Most iPad users probably already own a case, making the idea of buying another a tough one. But if you haven't yet, and you wish your iPad had a physical keyboard, this one is the one to get. It's a Bluetooth 2.0 silicone keyboard that's built right into a case, and because of how the case flips back, it effectively converts the iPad into a notebook. The keyboard uses a micro-USB cable for charging and when fully charged, which takes 4 to 4.5 hours, the keyboard provides 90 hours of continuous use.

The case measures 9.75” x 8” x 1” with the iPad inside, and an inner flap holds the iPad securely in place, and a magnetic clasp on the outer flap adds secondary protection. It's priced at $119, and if you've been looking for a way to make your iPad your sole travel computer, this may be a worthwhile investment.

Solid Line Begins Shipping All-in-One Leather Case & Bluetooth® Keyboard for iPad™ Next Week

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Solid Line Products, LLC (www.solidlineproducts.com) today announced that the company is now taking orders for its brand new, all-in-one leather case & Bluetooth® keyboard for the iPad™ for shipment next week. The Bluetooth 2.0 silicone keyboard is built into the quality leather folio case designed to protect the iPad from nicks, scratches, and scuffs.

“Unfortunately, we humans can’t undo 30 years of keyboard conditioning overnight. This new product makes the iPad™ more practical for emails, note taking, or even for posting Facebook status updates.”

Designed for those who find the iPad’s soft keyboard impractical for any serious typing, the built-in keyboard pairs seamlessly to the iPad with three simple steps. The case allows for easy positioning of the iPad at an optimum angle for viewing a horizontal screen and typing. Put another way, Solid Line’s case allows consumers to use their iPad as they would a laptop as needed.

“The iPad™ is indeed a revolutionary product,” said founder and CEO Henry Lo. “Unfortunately, we humans can’t undo 30 years of keyboard conditioning overnight. This new product makes the iPad™ more practical for emails, note taking, or even for posting Facebook status updates.”

The keyboard uses a micro-USB cable for charging. When fully charged, which takes 4 to 4.5 hours, the keyboard provides 90 hours of continuous use.

The case measures 9.75” x 8” x 1” with the iPad inside. An inner flap holds the iPad securely in place, and a magnetic clasp on the outer flap adds secondary protection.

Priced at $119, Solid Line is taking pre-orders and will begin shipping units early next week for early October delivery. The case is available in either black or brown.

Solid Line Products, LLC is headquartered in San Francisco. The all-in-one keyboard is the first in a line of products for the iPad™ that the company will be bringing to market in the coming months.

Analyst: Verizon, Apple May Not Come to Terms
On Thursday, at a Goldman Sachs conference, from Verizon Communications CEO Ivan Seidenberg made comments that implied the rumors of a soon-to-launch Verizon iPhone were vaporware. On Friday, a Wall Street analyst said the two companies may never come to terms.

Seidenberg said the following on Thursday, making those clamoring for a Verizon iPhone blanch, "We don't feel like we have an iPhone deficit. We would love to carry it when we get there, but we have to earn it. I think 4G will accelerate the process, and any other decisions Apple makes would be fine with us. Hopefully, at some point Apple will get with the program." That was hardly the sort of talk that makes one think a Verizon iPhone is coming in Q1.

On Friday, in a research note, Mike Abramsky with RBC Capital Markets said "Verizon may not accept Apple's contract terms that risk its Android franchise, which could face significant cannibalization from pent up iPhone demand on its network. And Apple may not want iPhone to be second banana to Android at Verizon, and may be unwilling to accept less than prime marketing, subsidy support for a Verizon iPhone. This may or not ever get resolved even under LTE; the longer this takes, the more entrenched Android becomes at Verizon so the more difficult to strike a deal."

It's widely believed that Verizon was the first choice for Apple's iPhone, but the carrier turned down the arrangement as it could not come to terms with Apple. Since then, AT&T has taken advantage of its arrangement with Apple to close in on Verizon's subscriber numbers, while at the same time Android has become a hit based on its relationship with Verizon, as well as other carriers.

As far as reports of a possible 3 million CDMA iPhones to be manufactured in December, Abramsky believes they may be destined for other carriers, not Verizon. There are plenty of other CDMA carriers, including KDDI in Japan, China Telecom, Mexico's Telefonica, and Sprint and U.S. Cellular in the U.S. Still, when one thinks CDMA, at least in the U.S., one thinks Verizon.

Rumors of a Verizon iPhone in Q1 of 2011 continue to circulate. One clue that we noted was just how "generous" AT&T was in giving early upgrades to some customers, so they could get the iPhone 4, additionally locking them into AT&T for two more years. Abramsky believes that if a Verizon deal cannot be made, Apple may turn to Sprint and T-Mobile instead.

SwiftKey Breaks Out Of Beta
Back in July, we told you about a new application for Android smartphones that claims it can predict the next word you intend to type. The app, known as SwiftKey, was previously available for free as a beta product. Now TouchType (the makers of SwiftKey) want you to know the app is ready for prime time. With the official launch of SwiftKey, the app now supports voice dictation as well as multi-touch. It also has a new keyboard layout and is capable of making simultaneous predictions in two languages. If you've been anxious to try out the official version, now's the time—to celebrate the launch, TouchType is offering SwiftKey for $0.99 for the next week. Regular price is three dollars more.
SwiftKey Touchscreen Typing app Uses AI to Write for you
LONDON, September 23, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- SwiftKey(TM), a new keyboard app for Google Android smartphones that uses breakthrough artificial intelligence (AI) technology, launched Thursday after receiving more than 250,000 downloads during its public beta. The app's AI learns a user's writing style to complete words and sentences for them, offering an unrivalled touchscreen typing experience.
SwiftKey accurately predicts about a third of words before a user chooses a single letter and the majority of remaining words only require one or two key-presses to type, speeding up SMS or email composition by up to 50%.
London-based developers TouchType Ltd launched the app following the popular beta, which saw SwiftKey become the most downloaded keyboard on the Android Market, amid hundreds of positive reviews. Tech blog Gizmodo wrote, "The star feature of SwiftKey is its predictive text -- it literally learns the way you type." Engadget said the app has "an uncanny ability" to guess your next word. "It's like a psychic, only for less money," wrote Mobile Crunch.
The key is TouchType's Fluency(TM) prediction engine, which uses new techniques to analyze billions of sentences of background text to understand how words combine. The technology can also learn from users' message archives and their typing over time to provide eerily accurate personalization.
"We were overwhelmed by the success of SwiftKey's beta launch and the positive response from our users," TouchType's CEO Jon Reynolds said. "SwiftKey is already one of the most popular keyboards on Android. We hope to continue that trend now with our enhanced full version."
The new app supports voice dictation and multi-touch, has a new keyboard layout including a numpad and arrow keys, and can make simultaneous predictions in two languages. To celebrate the launch, TouchType is giving SwiftKey away for just $0.99 for the next week on the Android Market, a three-dollar discount. A free trial version will become available next week.
Dr Ben Medlock, TouchType's CTO, said, "SwiftKey isn't just the first keyboard to harness Fluency's incredible prediction power; it's now the first keyboard to offer multiple-language prediction -- an amazing breakthrough for bilingual smartphone users."
Medlock said these innovations are just the beginning. "We're developing new techniques based on machine learning that will blow away today's keyboard technology. Watch this space."
SwiftKey predicts in US/UK English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Swedish, with many new languages coming shortly. See more at http://www.swiftkey.net.
