Lenovo's IdeaPad U1 Hybrid Tablet/Laptop Delayed Until 2011
Well, isn't this a shame? Lenovo has been one of the few companies to show genuine interest in shipping a high-class product in the "smartbook" sector, but now the IdeaPad U1 is seeming to fade from view. Hardly anything has been mentioned about the device since its original introduction, and all the while smartbooks have proven to be less popular than originally expected. Some may say that the tablet killed the smartbook before it ever had a real chance at success, but the U1 looks like it could be a hit regardless.

Sony's Second Gen TransferJet Protocol Increases Speed, Lowers Power Draw
You've probably heard of Bluetooth. You may have even heard of Wi-Fi Direct. But have you heard of TransferJet? That's Sony's own short-range transfer protocol, and the company has been quietly pushing it into more and more products over in Japan for the past year or so. A few TransferJet cameras have emerged, as well as a few TransferJet USB docks/dongles. The idea is simple. A TransferJet-enabled device can send short-range, high-speed communications to a TransferJet-enabled PC or a TransferJet adapter. But

Pedal power: Garmin measures it, Energysport harnesses it
Garmin has acquired MetriGear, the maker of "Vector" a motion sensor platform that measures a cyclist’s performance. Vector won industry acclaim in late 2009 but needed a backer to bring this cool bike device to market.  Vector tracks a broad number of factors to give the cyclist data on cadence and power (in watts). It measures how much each leg contributes to the effort, how much force is being used when the cyclist pulls the pedal up or pushes it down, and so on. Vector uses a sensor that

That question may be answered soon. Pan Lei, 25, and Pan Yong 23, are the Chinese brothers who invented the device. The Apple Peel 520 is a case that includes a circuit board, a battery, dock connector and SIM card.

Although much noise is made about backlit keyboards boasting gamer oriented layouts and fancy mice with odd shapes, the most important considerations for gaming are still the guts of the gaming machine, a comfortable desk layout, a good monitor and a quality sound reproduction device. While most gamers understand the need for a capable system and a quality monitor, they don't often appreciate that last bit about sound. Any old speaker

3D Laptops Fail To Ignite Consumer Interest
Movie studios and display manufacturers have both been pumping 3D viewing as The Next Big Thing for over a year, but the market as a whole has yet to display much interest. According to the analyst group IDG, 3D notebooks are typically priced well above $1000, despite the fact that in 2009, notebook ASPs were ~$569 after netbooks were removed from the equation. The price difference alone is enough to hurt consumer interest, but there are also questions regarding the future of 3D technology. Potentially interested

Despite Delays, NVIDIA Building Momentum Around Tegra-Powered Devices

Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 Digital Camera

We do our best to protect our cameras, cell phones, MP3 players, and other electronics from extreme weather conditions, drops, force, and water. It makes sense to do so, given that most of these gadgets don’t stand a chance against a bucket of water, accidental drop, or extreme temperatures. Realizing that life brings its fair share of bumps, spills, and accidents, Olympus has launched an entire line of digital cameras that are designed to take a licking and keep on ticking.

The Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 is the top model in Olympus' newly renamed "Tough" series of digital cameras that are made to survive the battles of everyday life. This camera is able to survive a drop from 6.6 feet, capture photos at up to 33 feet underwater, withstand 220 pounds of crushing force, and it can be used in temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 degrees Celsius). With these capabilities, it’s likely the photographer will surrender before this camera does...

Power Supply Needs Random Jumping
I've got a Corsair TX750 power supply.  It normally runs great, except every so often it will not power on when I hit my case's power button.  My solution is to jump the black and green pins on the motherboard power connector until the system flickers back on. It then works for a random time until I have to jump it again.
My case (Coolermaster Cosmos S) has a unique touch power button with a connector/adapter that goes on the end of the motherboard power cable.  I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and whether it's the power supply acting up or maybe the power cable not grounding properly.
btw My current motherboard is a Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P...but I experienced this problem while using another motherboard as well, so I don't think it's any issue with the motherboard.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Verizon Wireless To Introduce Tiered Data Plans As Well
It simply had to happen sooner or later. Usually, when it comes to U.S. carriers, they each follow one another. If one does one thing, the other follows suit. Generally, these are minor things. Unlimited calling plan introductions, unlimited texting, etc. But tiered data pricing is a fundamental shift in how mobile data is distributed, and AT&T started that shift when it switched over from a simple $30/month unlimited mobile data plan for smartphones to a tiered plan that introduced new limits and new (albeit cheaper) overage plans.

Analysts were quick to point out that the rest of the U.S. phone industry would probably follow them down that same path, regardless of whether consumers were willing and eager to accept it. There had previously been rumors flaring that Verizon Wireless, which is America's largest carrier in terms of subscribers, would soon be pushing tiered data live, making them the second in the U.S. to do so.

Now, Verizon Communications' chief said "he expects to soon start charging wireless customers based on their Internet data usage and introduce new plans with limits." That's according to a new Wall Street Journal report on the matter, where Ivan Seidenberg confirmed that the wireless carrier's new data plans could be phased in over the next four to six months. Though, don't expect them to be identical to the newer AT&T data plans; he confirmed that they would differ in some ways, but didn't provide details.

Basically, this is a heads-up for everyone considering a smartphone on VZW. If you want one of their phones, and you want their service, and you want unlimited smartphone data for $30/month, you better buy in now. Users who already have the plan are likely to be grandfathered in, but after the tiered plans are introduced, you can probably kiss the old ones goodbye forever.

Blockbuster Reportedly Nearing Bankruptcy, Hopes For A Miracle
The miracle Blockbuster executives were hoping for has failed to arrive; the company filed for Chapter 11 today. Blockbuster has filed for Chapter 11 and intends to continue to operate its 3,000 US locations while the bankruptcy proceedings are under way. It's hard to imagine how the company can meaningfully survive—executives have promised to reduce debt levels from approximately $1 billion today to just $100 million. Presumably much of the unprofitable fat has already been cut; Blockbuster has closed 1500 stores in order to cut costs.

"Blockbuster is under the gun now to generate as much cash as possible," said Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities. "When they were run by shareholders, the company was making investments and trying to grow. Now that they've been seized by creditors... Blockbuster will have to manage the business as lean as possible."

In theory, the Blockbuster brand still contains value and the retail locations themselves are probably sitting on some prime land, but the very nature of this discussion highlights how much the market has changed. Even ten years ago, the idea that a home entertainment monster like Blockbuster would find itself in bankruptcy was ridiculous. Now, the question is how effectively BB can compete with companies like Netflix and Redbox, assuming it'll ever be able to compete again at all.

Toshiba and Best Buy Collaborate to Introduce Children’s Laptop
New Satellite L635 Kids’ PC: Features Wipeable Keyboard and Software and Entertainment Suite Designed to Give Parents Peace of Mind
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Toshiba’s Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced the Satellite® L635 Kids’ PC, Toshiba’s first kid-centric laptop design, available exclusively at Best Buy. Designed in collaboration with Best Buy, the Satellite L635 Kids’ PC is a full-size laptop made for children aged five to 10 that provides a suite of entertainment and education software and allows parents to help ensure their children are staying safe on the Web.
Technology products are rising on the wish lists of families and are particularly popular as holiday gifts. About one in four parents reported plans to buy a laptop for their school aged children, according to a Toshiba survey that was conducted with Opinion Solutions, Inc., with nearly 74 percent reporting their kids ask for gadgets for the holidays. Parents want a reliable computer that also provides a safe environment for browsing the Internet, but their current options are limited to PCs made for adults or kid-friendly netbooks and toy-like computing devices.
The Satellite L635 Kids’ PC features a 13.3-inch diagonal HD display1, a built-in DVD drive and Webcam with software designed specially with a younger user in mind.
“The laptop has traditionally been a device conceived and built for adults, and devices currently being marketed to kids are either netbooks or toy-based computers,” said Jeff Barney, vice president and general manager, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division. “As a result of this collaboration with Best Buy, we have made a product that provides the right measure of fun and entertainment for children while meeting the computing needs and security concerns of their parents.”
Toshiba, Best Buy Collaboration
The Satellite L635 Kids’ PC is the latest consumer-driven innovation to come out of the You Spoke, We Listened program, a collaboration between Toshiba and Best Buy that has yielded products such as the Toshiba Satellite E205. With the Satellite L635 Kids’ PC, the two companies combined their consumer feedback and technical expertise to produce a laptop from the ground up for children that is like no other.
“People today expect well thought out laptop offerings customized to meet their expectations, and partnering with Toshiba makes it possible,” said Jason Bonfig, vice president of computing at Best Buy. “We set out to design a laptop that better serves the function and content needs of families, and the result was the Satellite L635 Kids’ PC.”
Since their arrival in fall 2008, products resulting from the Best Buy You Spoke, We Listened program have changed the dynamics of how computers and other technology are developed. Each generation originates with insight gleaned from sources such as Best Buy’s own customers and employees into desired features, styling and performance. The company then works closely with Toshiba to translate those customer expectations into a unique laptop design that solves for customer needs with the right hardware and functionality.
Unique Features
Designed with kids in mind, the laptop boasts a unique wipeable keyboard, allowing for easy cleaning of smudges left by messy hands and a no-gloss Dura-cross textured finish that helps resist fingerprints.
The accompanying software gives parents the opportunity to help protect their kids from dangers online while providing a fun and safe universe for children to explore the Internet. The laptop comes pre-loaded with KidZui, an Internet browser made for children, as well as Net Nanny, which allows parents to set boundaries on how the laptop is used. The combination of these two programs allows the security of the laptop to adapt as children mature.
For all its kid-ready features, the laptop stands out for still having the power of a standard PC, making it a product to be used and enjoyed by the entire family. Pre-installed entertainment includes two Disney movies and the family-friendly LEGO Batman game.
Availability
The Satellite L635 Kids’ PC is available exclusively at Best Buy beginning Sept. 26, 2010.

The device is ideal for highly mobile jobs such as direct store delivery (DSD), eCitation and vegetation management in markets like supply chain management, public safety and utilities.
The Toughbook U1 family of handheld replacement computers has also undergone a number of usability and navigation enhancements, including enlarged screen icons, programmable “right click” onscreen button, a larger soft keyboard, a “zoom and pan” mode – allowing users to simply navigate robust content and a soft “Ctrl-Alt-Del” button for log-on access.

Companies can also take advantage of the optional embedded features available for the Toughbook U1, including GPS, barcode readers (1D, 1D/2D), fingerprint reader and mobile broadband to drive greater levels of productivity.
Besides being able to run the latest Windows 7 software, the Toughbook U1 Ultra is ideally suited to run legacy mobile device applications, with solutions available to run Windows Mobile and Windows CE software in the Windows 7 environment. The solution, tWinrunnerâ„¢ by Clearview Software International, allows companies to maximize their legacy handheld device software investment while creating a migration path to a full Windows OS device.
“The ability to provide your mobile workforce with a reliable, powerful and adaptable handheld computer running a full Windows OS is critical for organizations attempting to stay ahead of the competition,” said Kyp Walls, director of product management, Panasonic Solutions Company. “Relying on a single-purpose device that runs a pared-down or proprietary OS is no longer acceptable in environments where information is critical and computing solutions must deliver a clear ROI. The Toughbook U1 Ultra, running Windows 7 and incorporating an impressive list of available integrated features, is the ideal handheld mobile computing solution for companies with an eye on future success.”
Most Rugged Toughbook
The Toughbook U1 line up is certified by an independent third-party test lab to meet MIL-STD-810G and IP65 standards for environmental conditions. The device can withstand a drop of 6 feet from any angle, and its fanless design keeps out water and dust while reducing weight and eliminating a common point of failure.
Embedded Wireless Connectivity
The Toughbook U1 family includes a variety of embedded wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth® 2.1 and optional Gobi2000™ mobile broadband technology from Qualcomm. Gobi simplifies complex multi-carrier wireless deployments for IT departments and allows mobile employees improved connectivity options while traveling at home or abroad. The Toughbook U1 will be certified on the Verizon Wireless, Sprint and AT&T Wireless networks, allowing workers to stay connected at all times.
"The market for field mobility solutions is currently at a crossroads where field mobile workers are being tasked with an ever expanding list of requirements,” said David Krebs, director of the mobile and wireless practice at VDC Research. “As a result the mobile computers deployed to support these work flows need to be designed to not only maximize performance but also to be delivered in a highly ergonomic and portable package. Panasonic's next generation U1 handheld device - including its full Windows OS and its myriad integrated I/O and communications options - addresses these requirements with a functionality and performance optimized design."

Google Wants to Conquer Netbook Market Next
Google's Android OS has proved it can hang with the big boys in the mobile handset market, and with a few tweaks, it will probably prove popular in the tablet space too. So what's next for Google? Try netbooks. According to Glen Murphy, the Australian lead designer on Google's Chrome operating system and Web browser ventures, consumers will start seeing the first Chrome computers shipping later this year.

Murphy says most of the big name vendors plan on getting in on the action, including Acer, Asus, HP, Samsung, and Toshiba. All of these companies will release Chrome-based netbooks at some point in the not-too-distant future.

"Mostly Chrome OS is a browser; it's really just a way of letting you buy a computer and have the Web be at the center of the experience," Murphy said. "We look at what everyone's doing with computers today and by and large most people only ever need the Web."

Chrome OS is basically a glorified version of Google's Chrome browser and relies heavily on cloud computing. For those who do most of their daily activities from within a browser already -- email, watching videos, chatting, and so forth -- Chrome OS will likely present a compelling option. But what it won't be great at is gaming, at least not from the outset.

"Gaming is one of the last remaining things that people feel they have to do outside of the browser because the browser hasn't traditionally been capable of these rich 3D experiences," Murphy added.

Google will be going up against both Microsoft and Apple when Chrome OS finally launches, and also with itself. Android netbooks haven't really gained much traction, but there are several Android-based tablets on the horizon, a space where Chrome OS will eventually find its way into as well. So what's the difference between the two platforms?

"Android is very focused on the best mobile experience there is, Chrome is very focused on the best Web experience there is -- obviously those things aren't mutually exclusive," Murphy explains.

SteelSeries Shift Gaming Keyboard is, well, Shifty
You're not still using a $10 plank from Walmart for your frag fests, are you? With the torrent of gaming keyboards on the market to accommodate any budget, there's no reason to saddle yourself with an ordinary board. The latest gaming keyboard to enter the fray (and compete for your gaming dollar) is SteelSeries Shift. SteelSeries didn't just pull the name out of a hat, but chose it because of the Shift's ability to alter its appearance and functionality through interchangeable keysets.

"With the introduction of the SteelSeries Shift, we’re able to bring another unique and powerful gaming tool to consumers," said SteelSeries CEO, Bruce Hawver. "The Shift greatly expands the functionality and concept of the original Zboard, which joined our product line in 2008 as a result of our acquisition of Ideazon, with new SteelSeries features that will provide gamers with a keyboard experience that can be customized for all types of games. As we bring the SteelSeries Shift to market, we are continuing to work with the best developers and publishers in the games industry to offer player’s unique layouts and functionalities that will enhance their entire gaming experience."

Don't mistake that to mean this is a rebadged Zboard. According to SteelSeries, the interchangeable keysets is the only trait these two planks have in common. The Shift was designed from the ground up and features "premium plastic" (for those of you who care about such a thing), three height levels, extra wide feet, gold plated audio ports, two USB 2.0 ports (one of them is powered), LED indicators, three layers of on-the-fly macros, and additional layers of mapping on the F and NUM Pad keys.

If you're a current Zboard owner looking to upgrade, SteelSeries says that Shift and Shift keysets are forward and backward compatible with Zboard and Zboard keysets, so you don't have to toss that WoW unit in the garbage bin.

The SteelSeries Shift is available now for $90 with separate keysets going for $25 a pop.

It's been a heck of a week for updates. Who wants to bet on the next device to get Froyo?

Roku Launches XDS Media Streamer With Instant Replay, Lowers Prices
For Roku fans, good just keeps getting better. Today, Roku made two huge announcements. One involves a new product; the other involves a price drop. Does it really get any better than that? The new guy is the XDS, which is launching alongside a new XD model, as they both now supports 1080p HD, 802.11N Wi-Fi and 'Instant Replay.'

And about that price drop...Roku now has three streaming box models: the entry-level Roku HD at $59.99; the Roku XD with Wireless-N and 1080p, and the top-of-the-line Roku XDS, which adds dual-band wireless technology and extensive connectivity options for home entertainment systems. That's right, you can now get a Roku into your home for as little at $60. Each of these boxes can deliver content from Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, MP3 Tunes, MOG, RadioTime, and more, with the $60 box topping out at 720p.

The XD will ship at $79.99 while the XDS will ship at $99.99, and the addition of a USB port will allow customers to play back stored music, photos, and up to 1080p video using a USB playback channel, which will be made available as a free upgrade to XDS owners in November of 2010. Both XD and XDS models also feature an industry first in streaming devices for the TV: an innovative Instant Replay button on the remote, enabling the viewer to skip back in 7-second increments without having to wait for a rebuffering delay. For DVR owners, this is a huge add. If you're sold already, you'll be happy to know that all three are available now.

Roku Introduces New Line of HD Streaming Players Starting at $59.99

New XD and XDS models feature 1080p HD, Wireless-N, and Instant Replay

SARATOGA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Roku, Inc., maker of the best-selling and award-winning Roku streaming player, introduced today its new product lineup, featuring improved performance and the lowest prices in the industry. With up to 1080p HD streaming support and Instant Replay, the new players are shipping immediately at prices starting from just $59.99. All models feature high-definition playback as well as support for older, standard definition TVs.

“We’re committed to delivering the best entertainment experience at the lowest price in the industry”

There are three new Roku models: the entry-level Roku HD at $59.99; the Roku XD with Wireless-N and 1080p, and the top-of-the-line Roku XDS, which adds dual-band wireless technology and extensive connectivity options for home entertainment systems.

All Roku players will continue to deliver the largest collection of streaming entertainment available for the TV, including over 100,000 movies and TV shows from Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) Video On Demand; live and on-demand baseball from MLB.TV; music from Pandora, MP3tunes, MOG, and RadioTime; photo and video sharing from Flickr and Facebook; plus news and entertainment from thousands of sources around the world.

“We’re committed to delivering the best entertainment experience at the lowest price in the industry,” said Anthony Wood, founder and CEO of Roku, Inc. “Customers can now buy an HD-capable Roku player with wireless for 40% less than the price of our original $100 Roku HD player. Or, think of it this way: for around the price of two Blu-ray Discs, a Roku player brings you access to limitless instant streaming entertainment choices available today and in the future. It’s perfect for anyone who wants the most choice and control over their entertainment.”

The new $59.99 Roku HD streams video in high-definition at up to 720p, and features built-in wireless and Ethernet for easy broadband connectivity anywhere in the home. The small, sleek Roku HD is only 1 inch tall and less than 5 inches wide, so it fits anywhere and is tiny enough to take on a trip. A composite A/V cable is included so that it can connect to virtually any TV, including standard definition models. An HDMI port enables HD playback on HDTVs.

The new Roku XD ($79.99) and XDS ($99.99) models deliver the next level of streaming performance, with 1080p HD support (delivered over HDMI) and extended-range Wireless-N. In addition, the XDS model features dual-band Wireless-N technology, component video output, optical audio output, and a USB port. Over USB, customers will be able to play stored music, photos, and up to 1080p video using a USB playback channel, available as a free upgrade to XDS owners (expected to be available in November 2010).

Both XD and XDS models also feature an industry first in streaming devices for the TV: an innovative Instant Replay button on the remote, enabling the viewer to skip back in 7-second increments without having to wait for a rebuffering delay. It’s a convenience that until now has been limited to DVRs and other hard-drive based devices.

First introduced in May 2008, the Roku player provides an easy, affordable, and reliable way for hundreds of thousands of Netflix customers to watch movies and TV shows instantly on their TV. Since the launch of the Roku Channel Store last fall, all Roku customers now have access to over 85 channels from 50 unique content services, with more added all the time.

Pricing and availability

The new Roku HD is available for $59.99, while the XD and XDS models are available for $79.99 and $99.99 respectively. All three Roku players are available immediately at www.roku.com, and available for preorders at www.amazon.com.

Chinese Case That Turns iPod touch Into iPhone Set for U.S. Sales
A pair of enterprising Chinese engineers have developed a case that fits around the iPod touch, turning it into an iPhone. That's all well and good in China, where the long legal arm of Apple isn't going to be able to reach them, but what if the device, called the Apple Peel 520, comes to the U.S.? That question may be answered soon.

Pan Lei, 25, and Pan Yong 23, are the Chinese brothers who invented the device. The Apple Peel 520 is a case that includes a circuit board, a battery, dock connector and SIM card. Wrapped around a jailbroken iPod touch, after software is installed, it allows the iPod touch to act just like an iPhone. After all, the iPod touch has been called the phone-less iPhone.

Until now this device has been restricted to China. Now, however, Go Solar USA has signed a deal with the Brothers Pan's company, Shenzhen, China-based Yosion Technology Co., to bring the Apple Peel 520 to the U.S.

Go Solar USA's website even teaches consumers how to jailbreak their iPhone. The Apple Peel 520 is priced at $60.

The question is, will Apple allow this to stand? Jonathan Hudis, chairman of the American Bar Association’s Trademarks and Unfair Competition Division, told Bloomberg, “The brothers who invented this Apple Peel probably ran down a list of how many ways could they annoy Steve Jobs. I could not see Apple standing by to let this continue, especially if it results in product shipping into the United States.”

So far, the company's only comment has come from Jill Tan, a Hong Kong-based Apple spokeswoman, who indicated that Apple was aware of the Apple Peel 520, and that any such iPod touch tampering would (obviously) void the warranty.

Netflix Launches First Online-Only Streaming Service Outside of U.S.
Netflix's first streaming-only service is now online and rolling out films to movie buffs all across Canada. The company confirmed a few months back that they were shooting to launch this fall, and now it looks like all of the approvals have been acquired. Starting now, Canadians can finally take part in the Netflix festivities that Americans have been enjoying for years, but only the streaming aspect.

Honestly though, that's probably the best aspect. With the invention of Redbox, it's easier than ever to find new release DVDs nearby, and it's far quicker than waiting for an envelope in the mail as with Netflix's by-mail DVD rental service. And since it's obvious that digital downloading is the way of the future, it's likely that Netflix will continue to bolster their Internet offerings while throttling back the DVD-by-mail offerings in time.

The Canadian introduction marks the first availability of the Netflix service outside the United States, and potentially more importantly, the first time Netflix has launched a streaming-only service. This could mean that Netflix is well on their way to landing similar deals in other nations that lack Netflix. One can hope, right? Canadians that are interested in giving Netflix a spin can head to netflix.ca for a free one-month trial. Not bad!

NETFLIX LAUNCHES CANADIAN SERVICE FOR STREAMING MOVIES AND TV EPISODES OVER THE INTERNET
For $7.99 a Month, Canadians Can Instantly Watch Unlimited Movies and TV Shows Streamed from Netflix to TVs and Computers — First International Market for Web’s Leading Movie Subscription Service

TORONTO, September 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Netflix, Inc. [Nasdaq: NFLX], the leading Internet movie subscription service, today launched in Canada with an offering that allows Canadians to instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix to TVs and computers for only $7.99 a month. The Canadian introduction marks the first availability of the Netflix service outside the United States.

Canadians can immediately begin a free, one-month trial — or learn more about Netflix — by going to www.netflix.ca.

“With our launch today in Canada, Netflix is focused on adding meaningfully to the entertainment choices available to Canadian consumers,” said the company’s co-founder and CEO, Reed Hastings, who was in Toronto for the inauguration of the service. “Convenience, selection and value are at the heart of the Netflix service, and it is our hope that this resonates with Canadians.”

Canadian Netflix members can choose from thousands of movies and TV episodes, including feature films, popular TV series, independent cinema, documentaries, foreign language movies, and kids’ programming. Choices are instantly streamed to TVs and computers via a broadband Internet connection — and members can watch as much as they want, whenever they want.
A range of leading devices that stream from Netflix

A number of consumer electronics devices available in Canada are capable of streaming instantly from Netflix right to TVs. Nintendo’s Wii home console and Sony’s PlayStation®3 (PS3™) system can stream from Netflix now, and later this fall Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is set to join the Netflix streaming ranks here. The installed base of the three leading consoles in Canada is approximately six million units.

In addition, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch can now stream from Netflix in Canada, as can Blu-ray disc players from Samsung and Toshiba. Movies and TV shows streamed from Netflix can also be watched instantly on PCs and Macs. Over time, more devices capable of streaming from Netflix are expected to be added in Canada, including Blu-ray disc players from VIZIO and Insignia (the latter available exclusively at Best Buy and Futureshop), Internet TVs from Samsung and the recently retuned Apple TV when it is introduced here.
Thousands of movies and TV shows to choose from

As part of today’s launch, Netflix announced Canadian license agreements with major motion picture studios such as Lionsgate, MGM Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox and Universal Pictures, as well as leading Canadian distributors Alliance Films, Maple Pictures, eOne and Mongrel.

Content available to Canadian Netflix members includes:

    * Popular feature films like “Superbad,” “The Pursuit of Happyness,” “A Beautiful Mind,” “The Notebook,” “Elizabeth” and “Slumdog Millionaire.”
    * First-run feature films from Twentieth Century Fox, including “(500) Days of Summer,” “My Life in Ruins,” “All About Steve” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox” concurrent with their release on linear pay TV in Canada.
    * In-cycle programming including the new romantic comedy “Running Wilde,” starring Will Arnett and Keri Russell. In Canada, “Running Wilde” will stream from Netflix on the same day as the show airs on network television in the U.S.
    * The first five seasons of the Canadian Showcase Network’s hit “mockumentary” series “Trailer Park Boys,” director Mike Clattenburg’s creation about the misadventures of a group of trailer park residents in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
    * Prior season episodes of the Emmy® and Golden Globe® winning TV series “Mad Men” (the stylish drama about ad agency life on New York’s Madison Ave in the 1960s) and the hit dramas “Leverage” (starring Academy Award® winner Timothy Hutton), “Rescue Me” (Denis Leary’s series about New York City firefighters) and “Monk” (starring Emmy® Award and Golden Globe® Award winner Tony Shalhoub in the title role).
    * Popular shows from the Discovery Channel (“MythBusters”), Nickelodeon (“SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Dora the Explorer”), Canada’s Nelvana Studio (animated episodes of “Babar” and “Franklin”) and the BBC (“Robin Hood” and “Fawlty Towers”).

As previously announced, the Netflix Canadian service will initially be available in English only, but the company said it expects to add French language capability over time.

Vector uses a sensor that is placed into the hollow spindle of the bicycle's pedals, with the battery pack attached to the crank. It can be easily moved between bikes and requires no special modifications to the pedal. The sensors use the ANT+ specification to communicate from the spindle to display unit.

ANT+ is an alternative to Bluetooth and ZigBee that its makers say can operate for years on a coin cell battery compared to maybe months for sensor networks using the other two protocols. At its core is ANT, a proprietary protocol for transmitting data across the 2.4 GHz band. Dynastream Innovations owns ANT, and delivers it via licensing agreements, chips or chipsets. ANT+ is an open extension for interoperating with any ANT device. It's what allows the heart rate monitor strap to communicate with the bike computer and other the devices.

Garmin is big into ANT+. And it's big into bike computers. Last month the company previewed a gorgeous high-end touchscreen GPS bike computer, the Edge 800, at the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas. The Edge 800 tracks all the stuff you would expect from a $450 device: speed, distance, time, GPS position, elevation, calories burned, climb and descent. Availability is expected in the fourth quarter, 2010, just in time for the holidays.

Because the Edge 800 uses ANT+, Garmin hinted that when both devices become available Vector will somehow be integrated with the computer. At the very least, the two should seamlessly work together. There's no word yet on when the Vector will ship.

So, what do you do all that wattage that the Vector says you produce? A device called the Energysport, by designer Filipe Lima, hopes to one day let you use your pedal power to recharge your MP3 player, cell phone, or other mobile device.
It attaches to the hub of the wheel where it harnesses kinetic energy and converts it to electricity. The recharger is attached separately.

The Energysport is still just a prototype and even in concept it has some limitations. The biggest is that it doesn't recharge devices while you are pedaling but must be removed before you can use it. Even so the potential for this type of device is huge. Plus, a removable charger could still work for some bicycle users, such as those on a cross country camping trip, or the daily bike commuter. Limitations or not, next-generation bicycle devices are becoming a real power trip.

Potentially interested buyers who aren't put off by the cost, are still leery of spending a substantial amount of money on a feature that could shrivel up and die in a few years. According to John Jacobs, an analyst with DisplaySearch, 3D isn't a particularly good fit for mobile systems. "If there's a reason you buy a notebook, it is because you need a notebook, not because you need a 3D notebook," Jacobs told Computerworld.

This doesn't sit particularly well with various manufacturers who've bet on widespread 3D uptake after giving up on OLED technology as a near-term must-have technology. Current information indicates that approximately 100,000 3D laptops have been sold thus far in 2010, out of a total of 100 million. By the end of 2010, DisplaySearch predicts total sales of $180,000 laptops, a whopping 0.08 percent market share. One problem with 3D notebooks is that they tend to favor lower screen resolutions like 1366x768. DisplaySearch believes this is part of why they don't appeal to gamers; a question we'll examine in more detail in the near future when we review the Lenovo Y560D.

New way of interacting with film—or just a blurry mess?

One point that's perhaps glossed over more than it should be is that 1366x768 panels have spread like a noxious disease into every notebook manufacturer's inventory. Ironically, if you compare modern notebooks to notebooks from 2-3 years ago, resolutions have gone backwards. It's now common for 15.6" notebooks to use 1366x768 (rather than 1280x1024, 1680x1050, or even 1440x900). Even 17" notebooks, which used to feature 1680x1050 or even 1900x1200, are all-to-often now 1600x900.

The news on smaller resolution screens isn't all bad--it's one way to ensure lower-end discrete GPUs can produce good framerates--but it's enough to annoy most serious gamers. Given the degree of lousy 3D titles and the historical fact that 3D content is something that tends to become more popular and then die off in 20-30 year cycles, we're not remotely convinced that 3D laptops will ever capture more than a small minority of sales. Those of you who are planning to buy multimedia laptops in the not-too-distant future, is 3D capability something you care about, or is it not worth the additional premium?

This is how Amazon shatters your dreams
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA MicrosoftInternetExplorer4
This is a story that only hardcore gamers and pc enthusiasts could really comprehend and understand. Why you ask me? Because every one of them has a dream and that’s to build the ultimate gaming PC. Highest end CPU, most extreme mother board, high end ultra fast ram filling the dimms to the gills, fast high capacity HDD's, efficient cooling. Then and most importantly the fastest most aggressive graphic card, because as well all know what's a gaming pc without the GPU. Its where these components all meet and end for a gamer. Now for the story of an Amazon customer who was trying to build his dream pc on Amazon. Please don’t take me as an aristocrat kid with a high salary that can buy anything he wants and now he's just crying for his lollipop that was taken from him by a poor kid that’s never tasted a lollipop and was dying to see what it tastes like. No, its exactly the opposite I'm a 30 year old man with a medium salary I'm married and have kids. This was my chance to make my dream from 15 years ago come true. The ultimate gaming experience. Unfortunately Amazon had other plans.
Now I know some of you might say, get over it, so what, better graphic cards are coming every other day. Well I've waited for 15 years, and now my dream pc is right in front of me. I have assembled it, the case the CPU the motherboard the ram the HDD's and the cooling. It's right in front of me, it's calling for me to test it and take the beast for a ride. But alas, the full tower case feels so empty when you see it from inside, I only see 4 empty PCI slots with not a single GPU. This was supposed to be my dream and it was shattered and this is how.
First off these are the components that make my dream pc (all were bought from Amazon and arrived at on time)
Case
Cooler master HAF-X
PSU
Corsair Professional Series Gold High Performance 1200-Watt Power Supply AX-1200
CPU
Intel Core i7 980X Extreme Edition 3.33GHz 12 MB L3 Cache
CPU Cooler
Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H50
Mother Board
ASUS Rampage Extreme III
Ram
12 GB Corsair Dominator GT 4 GB PC3-17000 2133Mhz Dual Channel
HDD
1x Western Digital 600GB VELOCIRAPTOR 3.5INCH 10000RPM 32MB CACHE SATA 6.0GB
3x Western Digital 2 TB RE4 SATA 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache

Now seeing the components this pc has, what GPU will go well to complement the high end specs that it has. Yes that's right it's the Sapphire Toxic Ati Radeon 5970 4gb the fastest graphic card the world of textures and frames has ever experienced.  Now Since this is a gaming PC why not make that 2 Toxic GPUs, and that was my order.
Listed on Amazon at that time to be in stock and that it will arrive in 1 – 2 months. They also had the 4gb non toxic, but hey this is my dream so why settle for the non toxic with 850 MHz and not the toxic with 900 MHz, I mean they where both in stock.  So after all my components arrived and happily assembled, like a little child, I would go and check every day on my order hoping that the 1-2 months shipping date would be an estimation and that my GPU would be shipped sooner. Everyday would pass with me staring at my dream PC waiting for the GPUs so I can install them. Everyday I would go and check on my order status on Amazon to hopefully see the phrase "Not yet Shipped" to "Shipped". Amazon stated that I would receive them in the time frame from the 14th of sep till the 5th of oct. So here I was, fingers crossed, hoping that it would be the former not the latter or at least in between. Then the 14th of sep passes by and still no news. Ok, I tell myself, they said it would be late. But still I'm not convinced so just in case I go check on the non toxic 4gb version to see if it was still in stock, knowing that the toxic was a limited edition, and yes it is still there and on sale $979, and it stated "order it now and you will receive it by Monday". Phew, I still have that as plan B or will I. I start weighing my options shall I get this and cancel that, but my Toxic order is right in front of me and hey Amazon honors it agreements and deals. It is even closer now and I've waited for a month why not wait a little longer and keep my PC at the ultimate level. So I wait and time passes.
I grow weary and confused now no one stocks the non toxic sapphire 4gb not Newegg not anyone and its selling on ebay for at least double the price. So I contact Amazon and ask them will they honor the deal and here i will copy and paste my chat session (I had lots of typos as you will see from the chat, frustration does things to a man and have removed the names of the parties so no one is hurt Amazon should answer to this and not the poor guys in the support center)  :

Me:as you can see this is the order number 002-9519364-651464009:29:52 pm
Me:are you still with me mr (Amazon Support) 09:32:15 pm

Me:sorry then thought i lost u 09:32:55 pm
(Amazon Support):I can assure you that we will ship your order. 09:33:50 pm
Me:so it will be honored and you have it in stock 09:34:08 pm
Me:if i change my shipment to 1-3 days will it arrive faster 09:34:26 pm
Me:or cause its listed that it will take 1 to 2 months then that will not affect it 09:34:59 pm
Me:and please tell me if god forbid and i was told that the order will not be honored because its out of stock what can i do 09:35:55 pm
(Amazon Support):Yes, we will ship your order as soon as we have the item from our supplier. We expect it to be in stock by September 30.09:37:04 pm
Me: so there is no chance for me to expediate the shipping by paying for faster delivery 09:37:48 pm
(Amazon Support):Our delivery estimates are based on the item's availability and the delivery speed you choose. If an item's "In Stock" and you choose an express shipping method, you'll receive your items more quickly than if you choose Standard or Super Saver Shipping. 09:39:06 pm
(Amazon Support):If an item isn't readily available, selecting One-Day or Two-Day Delivery will reduce the transit time after we've shipped your order, but won't impact how long it takes us to obtain the item or prepare it for shipment. 09:39:20 pm
Me:okay thank you very much you have been a great help 09:40:11 pm
Abdullah Nasir :Is there anything else I can do for you today? 09:40:22 pm
Me:just one more question is there a chance i can have an email confirmig that you have the product in stock 09:40:50 pm
Me:if i wanted to buy more for example 09:40:58 pm
Me:cause my rig can handle graphic cards 09:41:24 pm
Me:4 graphic cards that os 09:41:33 pm
Me:is not os 09:41:38 pm
Me:anyway you get the drill im bad with the keyboard 09:41:57 pm
(Amazon Support):I'm sorry but we do not have a feature to send you an e-mail when the item is in stock. 09:42:02 pm
(Amazon Support):I'd suggest checking our website from time to time to see if this item is available. 09:42:11 pm
Me:ok then thanks a million and peace09:42:27 pm
(Amazon Support):Thanks for visiting Amazon.com. We hope to see you again soon!09:42:45 pm
