Hitachi Adds Enterprise HDDs to G-SPEED Hard Drive Line
Those new to the storage market may be unfamiliar with G-Technology. It was a company swallowed by Hitachi a few years back, and it remains (quietly) one of the more stylish HDD brands on the market today. The only real competition in terms of design is given by LaCie, but today G-Tech is taking a step in the right direction by proving that they also value reliability. The company just announced that they are transitioning their entire line (the G-SPEED RAID one, anyway) to high-grade, enterprise-class hard

ATI Introduces Ultra High End FirePro V9800 Graphics Card
As summer winds down, the professional graphics market, it appears, is just starting to heat up. About a month ago, we tested the Fermi based Quadro 6000 and 5000 graphics cards from NVIDIA. Although they were a few months late to the party, our results revealed the Quadro models held a measurable performance advantage over ATI's then flagship product, the FirePro V8800. But as expected, the red team has stepped their game up by offering a new workstation card that looks to close the gap while offering multi-monitor

Like other nettops before it, this one can be stashed out of sight and attached to the back of your monitor, tucked away inside your home entertainment center, or out in plain view. Origin PC Introduces "Big O" Gaming Tower With PC And Xbox 360
Is this the world's ultimate gaming PC? You could probably argue either way, but we're pretty sure it's the world's ultimate entertainment machine. Pound for pound, you'll be hard pressed to find a desktop tower with more fun-per-square-inch than on Origin PC's new "Big O." This mammoth machine is unlike anything we have ever seen. Rather than just stuffing a flashy tower with the most cutting-edge components, Origin has decided to go above and beyond the call of duty. How so? By placing a top-of-the-line gaming PC and an Xbox 360 Slim inside a single tower. One tower, two gaming machines.

This desktop is likely to be one of the largest and heaviest on the market, but considering just how functional it is, we're willing to give it a break. In order to maintain a decent temperature, Origin has liquid cooled both the PC side and the Xbox 360 Slim side. Each system is built so that the Xbox 360 ports are never blocked, and each can run the PC side and the Xbox 360 side at the same time, enabling you to game on your console / HDTV while someone else games on your computer LCD.

Two different configurations are available as examples (though you can build your own from scratch if you phone Origin), each of which are well above most budgets. But with a layout like this, would you expect anything less? The "base" model is $7669, and that includes a Core i7 930 CPU (overclocked to 4GHz), dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 graphics cards, a Rampage III Extreme motherboard, 6GB of Corsair Dominator 1600MHz memory, 12x Pioneer Blu-ray player, 1500w PSU, Creative sound card, Windows 7 Home Premium and a media card reader. The $16999 build will definitely break you, but that includes dual Intel Xeon X5680 CPUs overclocked to 4.3GHz, an EVGA SR2 motherboard, quad SLI GTX 480 GPUs, 12GB of memory and dual 1Kilowatt power supplies. Rather impressive stuff, for sure. So, is anyone even considering one of these? As lovely as they are to gawk at, those prices sure are shocking.

Absolute Power – With Intel’s Xeon X5680 processors there is nothing you can throw at The Big O that will slow it down. Each X5680 features six-cores, twelve threads, supports ECC memory—and that’s before we add a second CPU and overclock it to a lighting fast 4.3GHz. Add in up to 24GBs of Corsair GT 2000MHz memory and then dare any computer task to slow down your Big O.

The X-Factor – To empower gamers with the most comprehensive gaming platform on the planet, ORIGIN integrates a liquid-cooled Xbox 360 slim directly into each Big O.  Every Big O system is strategically modified so the Xbox ports are easily accessible with liquid cooled processors for extreme performance.  You can even game on the Xbox 360 while your computer is busy dominating whatever other task it is assigned.

Liquid Cooled to Perfection – ORIGIN keeps your Big O cool with its state of the art liquid cooling system that maximizes performance from the CPU, motherboard, graphics card and even the integrated Xbox 360 slim. The ORIGIN custom liquid cooling system aggressively dissipates heat and eliminates fan noise ensuring your system remains cool and whisper quiet.

“The Big O will satisfy the demands of even the most power hungry gamer, but when you create the ultimate personal computer system it has to be designed to go above and beyond gaming” said Kevin Wasielewski, CEO and Co-Founder of ORIGIN.  “From the hottest games on the market to digital video editing and 3D rendering you will have the power to perform at every level. To have the best you have to build using the latest in computer technology that guarantees unmatched performance and that is exactly what you get with the Big O.”

Logitech Sells 100 Million Mice in 19 Years, Starts A Revolution
Ever had to deal with a mouse problem? Those guys can multiple like no other. And funny enough, so can mice that you move cursors around with. Logitech, who has become a staple in the mouse industry, introduced their first wireless mouse in 1991. Nearly 20 years later, they have shipping 100 million of them. Not bad, not bad at all.

By our math, that's over 5 million mice per year, and that's nothing to sneeze at. Wireless mice are big business today, with just about every mouse maker in the world having at least a few wireless options. Logitech's first one was RF-based, and today, the company has made connections even simpler with 2.4GHz Unifying technology.

Here's the most shocking part: Logitech's first wireless mouse retailed for $150. Yes, $150! It's hard to believe nowadays, when mice can be found for as low as $10 or $20. Logitech's cheapest wireless mouse today is $24.99, and it's no slouch. So, we'll throw another party 19 years from now when you sell 200 million, right?

Logitech Ships 100 Millionth Wireless Mouse

Introduced First Wireless Mouse in 1991, Continues Innovating for Way Computers Used Today

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today Logitech (SIX:LOGN) (NASDAQ:LOGI) announced the shipment of its 100 millionth wireless mouse. Logitech introduced the world’s first radio-frequency (RF) based mouse for computers in 1991, initiating a revolution that transformed wireless technology from an industry novelty to a core part of today’s computing experience.

“Logitech mice have played an integral role in improving the computing experience for millions of people, and our wireless mice build on that heritage”

“Logitech mice have played an integral role in improving the computing experience for millions of people, and our wireless mice build on that heritage,” said Rory Dooley, Logitech senior vice president and general manager of the Control Devices business unit. “Today, our wireless mice deliver a robust feature set combined with unparalleled ease of use and precision. And the new mice we offer in a variety of colors and patterns provide consumers with an element of self expression while they use their laptop and mouse to seamlessly navigate their favorite content.”

Logitech chose RF technology in 1991 to improve on line of sight constraints associated with the infrared (IR) technology found in previous generations of wireless peripherals. Unlike IR, RF technology lets you orient your mouse in any direction without worrying about the position of the receiver – you could place it behind your computer or even under your desk to eliminate clutter. Since that time, Logitech has continued to improve the consumer experience with wireless innovations such as the tiny nano-receiver and Logitech® Unifying technology that delivers faster and more reliable 2.4 GHz connectivity.

free in-ear headphone tips from Monster

Monster is giving away 100 sets of in-ear supertips in exchange for a review.  I use these tips on my turbine pro's and their my favorite tips so far (the gel-tip medium size is what I use I believe), so I figured I'd pass this along to you all. Looks like they are pretty universal for all in-ear headphones.

New models from Apple, Samsung, Toshiba, and Fujitsu

(Credit: James Martin/CNET News)
What a week for laptops! We'll start with the big news, which drew many a visitor to Crave: at a press event in Cupertino, Calif., Steve Jobs announced a number of updates to Apple's MacBook line. Get a sense of the changes with our "new vs. old" analysis of the MacBookMacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, or just have a look atwhich new MacBook is right for you.
You can also read our review of the new MacBook; stay tuned for the MacBook Pro review. (Also follow those links to see video of the new products.)
Believe it or not, Apple wasn't the only manufacturer making a big laptop announcement this week. Samsung, which thus far has sold laptops only in Europe and Asia, launched a line of laptops in the United States. The company entered the U.S. market with seven laptops that fall into four categories: Netbook (the NC10), slim ultraportable (the X series), mainstream consumer (the Q series and R series), and business (the P series). By week's end the Q310 had made its way to the marketplace.
Meanwhile, Toshiba refreshed nearly all of its notebooks, with two new Tecra business laptopsthree new Porteges, and a bunch of fresh Satellites. Not to be outdone, Fujitsu joined the fray with the LifeBook A6220 and updates to two other LifeBook models.
Aside from reviewing the MacBooks, we started filling out our holiday retail laptop roundup, because it's never too soon to get your holiday shopping done. And we had a look at a travel gyroscopic mouse that can help reduce arm pain while mousing.
Elsewhere in the news: Averatec's Buddy Netbook started shipping; NEC joined the Netbook fray; and a report from Gartner indicated that Netbooks are giving the PC industry a boost.
Also, OWC piggybacked on the Apple announcement to unveil its MacBook memory upgrade kit; HP is rumored to be developing a touch-screen laptop; and our colleagues at Crave UK swooned over the Asus Eee PC S101.
Finally, this week we spotted two awesome laptop accessories: the Chinese Beijing Opera USB laptop cooling pad, and the finger trap laptop security device.
Have a great weekend!

Toshiba: new 400GB, faster 7,200rpm notebook drives

Playing catch-up with competitors Hitachi and Samsung -- both of which have begun shipping 500GB laptop drives -- Toshiba has finally announced a new 400GB high-capacity drive along with a new line-up of high-performance 7,200rpm 2.5-inch HDDs. The new 400GB drive boosts areal density to 477Mbit/s (308Gbpsi) to achieve a capacity of 400GB on just two platters and is touted as its "low-noise flagship model." The new 400GB notebook drive (MK4058GSX) is expected to hit mass production in September and will target both notebook PC and consumer electronic applications; however, the company expects to ramp up production of its higher performance 7,200rpm models of its current drives next month, including the 320GB (MK3254GSY) model and the smaller 80GB, 120GB, 160GB and 250GB capacities.
Toshiba says its MK4058GSX uses an improved read-write head and enhanced magnetic layer to boost areal density and achieve a capacity of 400GB on only two platters, the highest data density of any of Toshiba’s 2.5-inch drives. In addition, it has reduced acoustic noise during data seek by 2 decibels (dB) compared to the company’s current top-of-the-line 320GB MK3252GSX: "As a result, the new 400GB drive is ideally suited for noise-free playback of movies and music on notebook PCs and digital products," the company noted.

In addition, the new drive offers reduced energy consumption -- approximately 20 percent more efficient than the 320GB for longer battery life.

The five other drives that Toshiba has added to its line-up take full advantage of a 7,200rpm rotation speed to boost performance. Compared to the current 200GB model (MK2049GSY), Toshiba says the 320GB MK3254GSY improves maximum internal data transfers rate by approximately 14 percent and is 37 percent more efficient than the MK2049GSY in terms of energy consumption efficiency. In addition, all capacities support an optional Free Fall Sensor function that detects a falling HDD and parks the head before impact. Last month, WD began shipping a 7,200rpm versions of its 320GB notebook drive, which became available from OWC as an external portable drive

Toshiba also claims that the MK4058GSX is Toshiba’s first 2.5-inch HDD that achieve chlorine and bromine concentrations below the standard required for recognition as a Toshiba environmentally conscious products (below 900ppm for each, and an overall total below 1,500ppm) and that uring their lifecycle, the new drives will have lower CO2 emissions by approximately 95g a year.

But as expected, the red team has stepped their game up by offering a new workstation card that looks to close the gap while offering multi-monitor support that NVIDIA can't match currently.

The FirePro V9800 offers similar features found in the V8800 we reviewed in April : Cypress GPU, 1600 stream processors, 147.2 GB/s memory bandwidth. The difference here is a larger, 4GB memory buffer, six DisplayPort connections, and a higher price tag. At $3,499, it costs over twice as much as the V8800, targeting workstation users that demand the highest level of performance possible with no compromises.

So how well does the V9800 stack up against the competition? Fortunately, we have it in the labs right now and will be putting it through our benchmark suite this week, along with other high end models from the FirePro line and the latest Quadro cards. Of course, a full review will be posted on HotHardware shortly so stay tuned.

The company just announced that they are transitioning their entire line (the G-SPEED RAID one, anyway) to high-grade, enterprise-class hard drives. With solutions ranging from the new four-bay G-SPEED Q with a quad interface to the 16-bay Fibre Channel G-SPEED FC XL, all G-Tech G-SPEED products will feature Hitachi Ultrastar drives, which should allow these drives to last longer and perform better under sustained heavy loads. These drives are designed, manufactured and tested to meet the demanding environments found in data centers around the world, so they should do just fine in your home storage array.

The move to enterprise also positions the company to sell more to video editors and those who archive lots of content; enterprise drives are less likely to fail, and since they're built from the ground-up to withstand multi-user, 24x7 storage applications in systems such as network attached storage, RAID storage arrays and media servers, they should handle most everything that you may toss at it. The new G-SPEED Q solution is shipping today, with more details on each below.

 G-Technology G-SPEED Family Goes Enterprise-Class

Extending its Quality Brand in the A/V Market it Pioneered, G-Tech by Hitachi is Shipping its G-SPEED RAID Storage Solutions with Enterprise-Class Hard Drives, Delivering More Value at the Same Affordable Price
IBC2010

AMSTERDAM--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As the premium brand serving content creators and the professional audio/video (A/V) community, G-Technology™ by Hitachi today announced that its transitioning its entire G-SPEED RAID external storage family to high-grade, enterprise-class hard drives. With solutions ranging from the new four-bay G-SPEED™ Q with a quad interface to the storage performance mammoth, the 16-bay Fibre Channel G-SPEED FC XL, all G-Tech G-SPEED products will feature Hitachi Ultrastar™ drives, one of the industry’s most reliable and trusted enterprise-class hard drives that are specifically designed, manufactured and tested to meet the demanding environments found in data centers around the world.

“With our relentless commitment to quality and performance, our G-Tech solutions have been the go-to storage tool in the A/V industry”

With a continued focus on delivering the industry’s most trusted, high performance, and reliable solutions for content creators, G-Tech’s move to integrate enterprise-class hard drives better meets today’s escalating HD video editing needs in multi-drive RAID environments. Like workloads in a data center, post-production storage solutions are accessing and streaming critical HD video as editors pore through footage to assemble the perfect sequence. These users cannot afford dropped frames, latency issues or compromised reliability as their livelihood depends on the content they create. Because of this stringent requirement, G-Tech has optimized its G-SPEED family to better balance the system requirements with hard drive features that match the rigors of the post workload.

Enterprise-Class Hard Drive Benefits

Enterprise-class SATA hard drives are specifically designed to withstand multi-user, 24x7 storage applications in systems such as network attached storage, RAID storage arrays and media servers.1 For enhanced reliability, enterprise-class drives are rated at 1.2 million hours mean time between failure2 (MTBF) and receive additional manufacturing testing at extended temperature ranges to ensure a target of less than one non-recoverable bit error per 1015 bits read. They also utilize enterprise-specific firmware to minimize the performance impact of rotational vibration interference (RVI) found in rack-mounted servers and multi-drive storage arrays. In addition, enterprise-class drives are designed for a low dollar per GB ratio with higher reliability, while minimizing power consumption. Combine all this with G-Tech’s proven quality reputation, and G-Tech has raised the bar in delivering storage solutions specifically designed for the professional content creation market.

“With our relentless commitment to quality and performance, our G-Tech solutions have been the go-to storage tool in the A/V industry,” said Mike Williams, vice president and general manager, Branded Business for Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. “With increased demands on RAID systems for HD video editing, it is important to properly balance the system requirements with hard drive features that match the rigors of this environment. Now with enterprise-class drives, the G-SPEED family may prove to be the best RAID solutions in terms of quality, value and performance.”

G-Tech is the only external storage vendor in the world with a complete line of enterprise-class 7200 RPM drive-based, RAID external storage solutions specifically designed for the A/V market. The G-SPEED family includes:

    * G-SPEED Q – G-Tech’s new high-performance, four-bay, hot-swappable RAID storage solution. Comes equipped with 3Gbit eSATA, FireWire 800, FireWire 400 (via cable) and USB 2.0.
