HP Sues Mark Hurd Over His Hiring by Oracle
Less than 24 hours after Oracle named ousted HP CEO Mark Hurd as co-president, HP has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against him. To be honest, if Monday had not been Labor Day, and if the announcement hadn't been made so late in the day, they probably would have filed a lawsuit that same day. While Hurd didn't sign a non-compete agreement, the lawsuit focuses on confidentiality agreements in his exit package. That package was worth over $40 million, so Hurd will have plenty of money to fight the lawsuit

The iPod has proven too strong for even Microsoft's marketing powers, and now it's rare to hear anything about the player at all. Microsoft is still making them, but they're hardly marketing it; at this point, the iPod has simply taken over, and as SanDisk's CEO pointed out a few years back, it's hard to "out iPod the iPod." Nikon Debuts Coolpix S8100 And S80 Point And Shoot Cameras
More Nikon goods? That's right. The Coolpix P7000 was just the beginning, as the company has two more point and shoots to consider today. The Coolpix S8100 is a robust, well-rounded pocket camera for those who aren't quite ready for a DSLR, yet need the resolution of 1080p video. It offers a 12.1MP backside illuminated CMOS sensor, 10x zoom, 1080p video support, subject tracking, Nikon's EXPEED C2 image processor, a 4-Way Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization System and ISO settings that range up to 3200. There's even in-camera HDR, a 3" LCD on the back, in-camera red-eye reduction and a number of colors to choose from (black, red and gold). The $299.95 price tag isn't all that bad either given the feature set, and it'll ship later this month -- in plenty of time for that high-brow stocking stuffer you're after.

Next, there's the Coolpix S80, a sleek, stylish pocket camera with a 3.5" touch panel OLED being the star attraction. And considering that there's no standard viewfinder, it's a good thing Nikon went for broke on the viewing display. Other features include 720p movie support, a 0.7" thin frame, a built-in print function, 14.1MP sensor, 5x wide-angle lens, a 5-Way vibration reduction (VR) Image Stabilization System, ISO settings up to 6400 and Best Shot Selector, which automatically takes up to ten shots while the shutter-release button is pressed, and then selects and saves the sharpest image. Those extra additions will push the MSRP to $329.95 when it ships in the Fall, though your color options are abundant: red, black, blue, pink, gold and silver/brown.

Nikon’s New COOLPIX S8100 Gives Consumers High-Speed Shooting And Super 10x Zoom To Capture ‘‘Can’t Miss’’ Moments Even In Low-Light Conditions

The S8100’s Compact Design Includes 12.1 MP CMOS Sensor to Capture Amazing Photos Up To 10 FPS

MELVILLE, NY (September 8, 2010) – Nikon Inc. today announced the COOLPIX S8100, which offers a 12.1-megapixel backside illumination CMOS sensor to provide consumers with enhanced performance and outstanding image quality for high-speed shooting and low-light conditions. Fast, responsive and versatile, the Nikon COOLPIX S8100 with an incredible 10X zoom will capture fast-moving subjects in still images and HD (1080p) movies.

To help capture moments that are gone in an instant, the COOLPIX S8100 not only features high-speed shooting at five full resolution frames at up to 10 frames-per-second (fps), but a pre-shooting cache that records up to two shots before the shutter-release is fully pressed. For extremely fast action shots, the S8100’s Sports Continuous mode records up to approximately 120 fps. With Subject Tracking, the S8100 automatically tracks a designated subject by activating autofocus (AF), enabling the user to capture the best moment confidently. The S8100 also adopts Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED C2™ image processing engine, which is customized to each COOLPIX model to further drive enhanced performance, outstanding image quality and HD video.

Staying true to the legacy of the Style Series, the S8100 empowers users with serious performance and image quality, while remaining stylish and compact. Equipped with a 10x Optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens (30-300mm, 35mm equivalent), the COOLPIX S8100 allows the user to get close to the action, even when recording a movie in Full HD (1080p). For that family film producer, the S8100 features one-touch recording, optical zoom and stereo sound recording while filming for an enhanced user experience. Additionally, users can perfect their movies in-camera with a new editing function or snap still images while recording.

“Our portfolio of compact digital cameras is designed to equip photographers of any level with the features and functions they will need for various shooting situations in a portable, compact body,” said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc. “The COOLPIX S8100 blends superior high-speed and low-light performance with a sleek and stylish design for a camera that is not only ready to go when you are, but one you are proud to show off.”

Advanced Technologies for Beautiful Nighttime Shots
The COOLPIX S8100 features a 12.1-megapixel backside illumination CMOS sensor, which enables exceptional image quality even when shooting in low-light settings. This CMOS sensor lends itself to enhanced shooting functions in dark situations, including the advanced Night Portrait mode, which reproduces night scenes and indoor portraits as the user sees them while reducing image blur. The Night Portrait mode combines consecutive shots of the background while the subject is taken using the flash, allowing challenging night scenes to be easily captured during handheld shooting and eliminating any subject movement. To further help deliver crisp, sharp photos, the S8100 features a 4-Way Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization System with ISO settings up to 3200.

Other functions benefiting from the lower noise and exceptional image quality of the new CMOS image sensor include an advanced Backlight shooting function with an in-camera high dynamic range (HDR) function, which merges images of the same scene to achieve a single image with a broad range of tonal detail for a frame-worthy shot. Additionally, the S8100’s advanced Night Landscape mode combines a series of five consecutive shots taken at a fast shutter speed into a single image with reduced noise for when taking handheld shots. From romantic candlelit dinners to capturing the bright lights of New York City at night, the COOLPIX S8100 ensures that no low-light moment will be left in the dark.

Creative Versatility
The COOLPIX S8100 helps unleash the user’s photographic potential with enhanced shooting and editing functions, including a new Mode Dial conveniently placed next to the shutter-release button for quick and easy access to shooting modes. The COOLPIX S8100 also features the Creative Slider, which simplifies adjusting brightness, saturation and color tone in-camera. Other in-camera editing functions include Quick Retouch and D-Lighting, giving users the ability to adjust their images during playback.

To further help the process of composing and sharing photos and movies, the COOLPIX S8100 boasts a 3.0-inch ultra high resolution (921,000-dot) Clear Color Display with a wide viewing angle and anti-glare coating. Additional must-have features in the S8100 include 17 scene modes, including the Scene Auto Selector, which automatically recognizes the shooting situation and adjusts camera settings accordingly for great photos in any environment. For outstanding portraits, the S8100 features Nikon’s Smart Portrait System, which incorporates a series of automatic functions including In-Camera Red-Eye Fix™, improved Face-Priority AF, Blink Warning, Smile Timer and Skin Softening to flatter even the most camera-shy subject.

Availability and Pricing

The new camera has a 1/1.7” CCD sensor coupled with a 7.1x Wide Angle Optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED Glass Lens, not to mention an EXPEED C2 digital image processor. The Zoom Memory function allows the camera’s 28-200mm (35mm equivalent) lens to be used in a way that simulates use of a prime lens, ideal for shooting at a preferred angle of view. The P7000 also adds controls and buttons for key features like ISO, white balance, bracketing and exposure compensation. The new innovative and independent Quick Menu dial ensures easy access to key functions with the comfort of analog operation. Advanced users will also enjoy the benefits of shooting RAW/NRW* files for creative freedom, and macro abilities as close as 0.8 inches.

While the image quality of the P7000 is nothing short of stellar, the video capabilities are far beyond that of a typical compact. The P7000 records HD video at 720p at 24 frames-per-second (fps) with optical zoom and autofocus control. A COOLPIX first, users can now record audio with an external stereo microphone via the microphone input. An accessory microphone or Nikon Speedlight can be mounted on the P7000’s hot shoe.

Additional features of the Nikon COOLPIX P7000 digital camera include:

    * 7.1x Wide-Angle Optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens (28-200mm f/2.8-5.6) allows for detailed close-ups and dramatic landscapes.

HP Intros First Officejet Printers With Web Connectivity
Like it or not, the world wide web is taking over. And when we say "taking over," we really mean it. The web is everywhere these days: on your PC, on your netbook, on your airplane, on your smartphone, on your HDTV, and soon, on your printers. Hewlett-Packard today introduced their first Officejet printers with Web connectivity, alongside their ePrint and Print Apps. If you aren't keeping pace with technology, chances are you'll have difficulty working this generation's printers. Imagine that!

These two new printers are the first designed specifically for small business and prosumer use with access to the Internet, and the new feature set is quite impressive. Users can print web content such as templates and stored documents without a PC by using HP print apps, and they can also print from any mobile device anywhere in the world. Admins can of course set up a "white list" so that only specific users can send in mobile print commands, and essentially, HP is enabling users to take the PC out of the printing equation.

The HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One series and Officejet 7500A Wide Format e-All-in-One are expected to ship soon, with full pricing and feature details listed below. The Web is coming to your printer; what's next, your shoes?

HP ePrint technology gives each printer an email address that allows direct printing to the office while on the go, and convenient printing for clients or colleagues visiting the office – no drivers or software necessary.

To protect customer privacy and security, each ePrint email address is unique and will never be distributed unless a customer provides it to others. The email address also can be reset at any time. Plus, customers can set a “white list” to ensure they only receive prints from a select list of email addresses.

HP print apps enable HP business customers to print web content without a PC.(3) The print apps are accessible directly from the printer’s touchscreen display, enabling them to enjoy services such as:

—            Marketsplash by HP for a shortcut to print customized marketing materials such as brochures and flyers;

Super Talent Ships Four USB 3.0 Flash Drives
For a moment there, we were beginning to think that Super Talent had taken their foot off of the pedal, but really, they were just saving up a few releases to announce all at once. The company made famous for producing numerous SSD options when the world had none is now making a name for themselves in the flash drive sector, with four new USB 3.0 flash drives shipping to those who can't get enough performance in their lives.

The new USB 3.0 Express RAM Cache drive is the headline device, which is available in 32GB and 64GB sizes. It implements a DRAM caching system to boost small block random performance by up to 300%, so performance junkies will surely take notice. Super Talent claims that this implementation will give users more performance when transferring smaller file chunks, which is something most users do more often than huge, bulk transfers. By adding a caching system, the Express RAM Cache drive can now write these same files 260% faster; instead of taking 13 seconds, this transfer now takes less than 5 seconds. As the file size decreases and the file count increase, this time savings becomes even more apparent.

From top to bottom, Super Talent's USB 3.0 thumb drive line ranges from $59 to $209, with the stock 16GB USB 3.0 Express Drive at the bottom, the 32GB model at $99, the 16GB Express RAM Cache at $129 and the 32GB Express RAM Cache at $209.

The Four Fastest USB 3.0 Flash Drives, Now Shipping from Super Talent

Performance USB 3.0 flash drives to fit most any budget

San Jose, California - September 7, 2010 - Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of Flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, today announced they are now shipping their new "USB 3.0 Express RAM CacheTM drive". Available in 32 & 64GB capacities, this new drive implements a DRAM caching system to boost small block random performance by up to 300%.

As most manufacturers are announcing their first USB 3.0 flash drive, Super Talent is announcing their fourth. Super Talent is also currently the only USB flash manufacturer offering a caching system on their drives.

"We've made the first, fastest, hardware encrypted, and most affordable USB flash 3.0 flash drives, now with the Express RAM Cache, we are offering affordable cache support on USB 3.0." - Super Talent COO, CH Lee

Sequential read and write speeds only show how a drive will perform when copying large files. In "real world" applications, we are often reading and writing 100's of smaller files and in some cases even booting to the drive. In these instances traditional flash deigns show their weakness and a caching system can dramatically improve performance. For example, say you wanted to copy 40 MP3 files to your flash drive. By adding a caching system, the Express RAM Cache drive can now write these same files 260% faster; instead of taking 13 seconds, this transfer now takes less than 5 seconds. As the file size decreases and the file count increase, this time savings becomes even more apparent.

Asus Brings GTX 460M GPU To RoG G53 And G73 Gaming Notebooks
Asus, meet NVIDIA. NVIDIA, meet Asus. We know you two have a long history of working together, but this particular union seems more important than ever before. The G53 and G73 gaming notebooks were powerful before, but the newest versions are even more potent. These two machines have just been upgraded with NVIDIA's GTX 460M (Fermi) graphics engine, meaning that DirectX 11 support and high-end 3D gaming are both included.

Both machines also enjoy a rear vented cooling system, ergonomic keyboard layout, 1.5GB of GDDR5 memory and plenty of screen real estate. The G73 has an eye-popping 17" panel, while the G53 steps it back to 15". Also, both machines are cut out for 3D gaming, and the HDMI 1.4 output ensures that you can display HD content on even the newest of HDTVs. Other specifications include a Core i7 processor (Core i5 and Core i3 are available), Windows 7, DD3 memory, dual hard drive support, an optical drive (Blu-ray or DVD), 2.0MP webcam, integrated 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, audio in/out and even a USB 3.0 port. There's also an 8-cell battery, built-in subwoofer and a case that  may give you back problems if you lug it around too long. No word on price yet, but we know Fermi doesn't come cheap.

Asus Launches Republic of Gamers G53 and G73 Notebooks Featuring the Brand New NVIDIA GTX 460M

New from ASUS Republic of Gamers, G53 and G73 gaming notebooks now ship with the just-released NVIDIA GTX 460M graphics engine, utilizing hardware optimized for DirectX11, with full support for high definition 3D gaming. They also feature a gaming-dedicated design, with rear vented cooling and an ergonomic keyboard surface.

Bringing Fermi to Notebooks

Based on the latest generation of graphics cards from NVIDIA, known to media and the public as Fermi, the NVIDIA GTX 460M offers extreme graphics performance tailored to portable PCs. It employs DirectX11 graphics with effects such as real time ray tracing and advanced tessellation. This offers the most sophisticated graphics engine from NVIDIA ever on a notebook PC.

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) G53 and G73 gaming notebooks represent the first time the new NVIDIA GTX 460M comes with a massive 1.5GB of GDDR5 memory. This also signifies the first time the NVIDIA GTX 460M has been put to use rendering 3D visuals, a key aspect of G53 and G73 gaming notebooks.
Made for 3D

These new notebooks come ready for full high definition 3D gaming, the first time this has been achieved on a 17” notebook PC in the case of the G73. Delivered in 120 frames per second to eliminate ghosting and lag, the 3D effect on these notebooks benefits from the power of the NVIDIA GTX 460M, as well as from superior quality LCD panels, embedded sensors and high fidelity active shutter glasses.

Both notebooks support 3D output to any compatible large screen television through HDMI 1.4, taking 3D to the living room for a larger-scale experience. The newest generation of G Series gaming notebooks improves 3D visuals on Blu-ray, as the NVIDIA GTX 460M graphics engine uses special hardware to accelerate 3D on the high definition disc format, whereas other graphics engines rely on the CPU, which increases system load.
Upgrading Visuals

With the NVIDIA GTX 460M on board, ROG G53 and G73 gaming notebooks are ready for the newest and most demanding PC game titles, including StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty from Blizzard-Activision.

Through their powerful hardware, these notebooks deliver high definition graphics with no compromise, taking advantage of DirectX11 innovations such as real time ray tracing and tessellation. They can run games in high resolutions with anti aliasing turned on and no slowdown incurred. This is due to the addition of the NVIDIA GTX 460M and its large dedicated video memory.
Gaming-Focused Design

Beyond core technologies, ROG G53 and G73 gaming notebooks focus on the overall user experience. Their unique styling puts them apart from other gaming notebooks, as does the 5-degree inclined keyboard surface, designed to ensure user comfort during even the lengthiest of gaming sessions. Likewise, the rear venting cooling exhaust pushes heat and noise away from users, keeping the notebooks stable and cool.

Speaking of the new models from ROG, Rene Haas, General Manager of Notebooks with NVIDIA, said: “ASUS Republic of Gamers notebooks always lead the industry with the latest gaming tech. With the introduction of NVIDIA’s new Fermi-class GeForce GTX 460M GPU, ASUS delivers DX11 for gamers on the go. Combined with NVIDIA 3D Vision, G53 and G73 notebooks are must haves for the coming holidays.”

Nikon President Hints At Interchangeable Lens Camera Model
Sony has their NEX line, while Olympus and Panasonic have Micro Four Thirds. It's a blossoming market, and just about everyone is getting into the interchangeable lens camera sector. They're smaller than DSLRs, yet offer far more flexibility compared to a standard compact digital camera. But one camera company that has yet to dive in is Nikon. Nikon is a staple in the camera industry, and it makes sense to think that they'd eventually follow suit. But they real question is "When?"

According to a new interview and report from Reuters, "when" may be "soon." Nikon's president has reportedly told Reuters that they are "readying a camera model [that they hope] will create a new market," and that camera will compete directly with Sony's NEX line. That leaves little to the imagination. It almost certainly has to be some form of shrunken DSLR with interchangeable lenses. The president said: "We want to propose another type of photography. I don't think there is any need to limit it to two categories. We want to create a new market."

We're guessing that "two categories" presently refers to standard point and shoot models along with DSLRs, with a third market being this new compact DSLR market. No mentions were made about model numbers, expected pricing or even a release, but the company would do themselves  favor by introducing interchangeable lens model camera prior to the holiday season. Photokina is just around the corner; who knows, maybe that'll be the true launching pad.

Origin PC Introduces "Big O" Gaming Tower With PC And Xbox 360
Is this the world's ultimate gaming PC? You could probably argue either way, but we're pretty sure it's the world's ultimate entertainment machine. Pound for pound, you'll be hard pressed to find a desktop tower with more fun-per-square-inch than on Origin PC's new "Big O." This mammoth machine is unlike anything we have ever seen. Rather than just stuffing a flashy tower with the most cutting-edge components, Origin has decided to go above and beyond the call of duty. How so? By placing a top-of-the-line gaming PC and an Xbox 360 Slim inside a single tower. One tower, two gaming machines.

This desktop is likely to be one of the largest and heaviest on the market, but considering just how functional it is, we're willing to give it a break. In order to maintain a decent temperature, Origin has liquid cooled both the PC side and the Xbox 360 Slim side. Each system is built so that the Xbox 360 ports are never blocked, and each can run the PC side and the Xbox 360 side at the same time, enabling you to game on your console / HDTV while someone else games on your computer LCD.

Two different configurations are available as examples (though you can build your own from scratch if you phone Origin), each of which are well above most budgets. But with a layout like this, would you expect anything less? The "base" model is $7669, and that includes a Core i7 930 CPU (overclocked to 4GHz), dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 graphics cards, a Rampage III Extreme motherboard, 6GB of Corsair Dominator 1600MHz memory, 12x Pioneer Blu-ray player, 1500w PSU, Creative sound card, Windows 7 Home Premium and a media card reader. The $16999 build will definitely break you, but that includes dual Intel Xeon X5680 CPUs overclocked to 4.3GHz, an EVGA SR2 motherboard, quad SLI GTX 480 GPUs, 12GB of memory and dual 1Kilowatt power supplies. Rather impressive stuff, for sure. So, is anyone even considering one of these? As lovely as they are to gawk at, those prices sure are shocking.

Huawei Lays Claim to First Affordable Smartphone
We're willing to gamble our in-laws that you've never heard of Huawei before (and if you have, don't pat yourself on the back until you've met our extended families), but there are a few reasons why that might change. First, Huawei is the largest networking and telecommunications hardware supplier in China, and they're also the second largest company in the mobile equipment market behind Ericsson. But what might really boost the company's popularity on a global scale is the release of what Huawei claims is the world's first Android-based smartphone that's actually affordable.

It's called the IDEOS and it comes built around the latest Android release, version 2.2 (or Froyo). It's priced between $100 and $200, which is admittedly pretty remarkable for a bona fide smartphone running Google's most up to date mobile OS, and it's apparently headed to the U.S. (as well as a number of countries across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America).

"We are proud to have already achieved our goal from early 2010 of developing a US$150 smartphone with an excellent user experience," said Kevin Tao, CEO of Huawei Device. "The IDEOS is an affordable option, designed to lower barriers to entry to allow easy mobile Internet access."

For 150 bones (presumably unsubsidized) we're not expecting a whole lot, and Huawei is so far fairly guarded about the exact hardware, but what we do know looks promising. There are three versions available -- U8300, U8500, U8800 -- the flagship model sporting a 3.8-inch screen, 3G, and can serve as a Wi-Fi router for up to eight devices. Pretty slick.

Sanho Supersizes iPad Storage with External Hard Drive
Any Apple users remember Sanho? They're the ones who brought the HyperMac battery packs for Apple iDevices to market, and now they've come out with a product sporting a bit more mass appeal. It's called the HyperDrive, and it's the world's first (and naturally only) external hard drive that can plug directly into the iPad, no PC required.

The HyperDrive adds up to 750GB of additional storage to supplement that suddenly paltry 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of internal storage your stock iPad shipped with. That in itself is pretty rad, but the HyperDrive kicks it up a notch by including two memory card slots and a 3.2-inch color LCD screen.

""HyperDrive iPad Hard Drive lets you carry your entire HD movie and photo library with your iPad," says Daniel Chin, President of Sanho Corporation. "HyperDrive is as compact as your portable USB hard drive and yet at capacities up to 750GB, can hold more data than your laptop," he added. "The iPad is the perfect media player but its capacities are limited and it requires a computer and iTunes to transfer media to the iPad," he continued. "HyperDrive releases the iPad from this restriction and truly turns it into a media consuming device," he concludes.

Transferring data to the HyperDrive is as easy as hooking up the HyperDrive to the iPad via a USB cable and the Apple Camera Connection Kit. We know what you're thinking, what about the 32GB size limit found on the Apple Camera Connection Kit? Sanho says it managed to sidestep this limitation with its "patent pending ability to turn individual file folders into virtual 32GB drives on the fly that are readable by the iPad."

If 750GB ($600) is overkill, there are smaller capacities available, albeit all of them pricey. These include 640GB ($550), 500GB ($500), 320GB ($450), 250GB ($400), 160GB ($350), and 120GB ($300). Criminy.

Asus P45-Based P5Q Deluxe Sneak Peek
Intel is planning to release the successor the popular P35 chipset in a few weeks, the aptly named P45.  From a feature standpoint, the P35 and P45 are somewhat similar.  But the P45 will have official support for 1,600MHz FSB processors, PCI Express 2.0, and the chipset is being manufactured 65nm as opposed to 90nm, which should being power consumption and heat down a bit.  The P45 will also be paired up with a new ICH10-series southbridge, which offers more SATA connectivity.

Asus showed off a few P45-based motherboards at CeBit a while back, but they weren't quite ready for prime time.  We have, however, just gotten our hands on the retail-ready version of the Asus P5Q Deluxe, which should be available soon.

Asus P5Q Deluxe

As you can see, the P5Q Deluxe sports a passive, all copper cooling system, very similar to the P5E3 series of boards.  It's got  three physical PCI Express x16 slots, dual PCIe x1 slots, and a pair of PCI slots.  Audio duties are handled by an ADI HD codec, and the I/O backplane is loaded with six USB 2.0 ports, dual LAN jacks, a PS/2 mouse or keyboard port (notice the two-tone colored port), digital and analog audio outputs, Firewire, and eSATA.

If you look between the second PCI and PCIe x16 slots, a flash memory card is visible, which features the "Express Gate", Linux-based mini-OS we told you
about here.

We haven't fired the board up just yet, but will be soon.  Once we're done with testing, we'll be publishing a full review, so stay tuned.  Something tells us that new 65nm northbridge is going to fun to overclock.

Phenom Roadmap Updates
As with all rumors, please take the following news item with a grain of salt until we can receive official confirmation or denial from AMD.

As we've previously reported, AMD is rumored to be shipping their B3 stepping Phenoms, and it seems that we might see 2.5GHz models before April Fool's Day:

“AMD is planning to launch B3 stepping quad-core Phenom 9050 series CPUs including 9850, 9750, 9650, 9550 and 9150 within the next 1-2 weeks, however the top-end 9850 will only reach a core frequency of 2.5GHz, instead of the original goal of 2.6Ghz. The company expects to be able to deliver higher core frequencies in the third quarter this year, according to sources at motherboard makers.”

While a 2.5GHz Phenom isn't likely to wrest the high-end CPU performance crown from Intel, but it could certainly spark a decent performance/price battle in the mid-range if it were to come in at an affordable price point.

If you're waiting on Tri-Core Phenoms, you might have to wait a few additional weeks, but they're expected to be appearing on store shelves by the end of April.

Test if Your ISP is Throttling BitTorrent
Potential throttling of BitTorrent traffic by major ISPs, such as Comcast and AT&T, means that your Internet access could be affected. It's not just the downloading of illegal movies and applications that utilizes BitTorrent traffic; there is plenty of legitimate BitTorrent traffic out there as well, such as Valve's Steam game distribution platform. Some legitimate Steam users have reported interference from ISPs.

While the government investigates and contemplates enacting net neutrally legislation, what is a broadband user to do? Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems have created a couple of tools for detecting if an ISP is manipulating BitTorrent traffic. They call their project: "Glasnost: Bringing Transparency to the Internet."

"ISPs are increasingly deploying a variety of middleboxes (e.g., firewalls, traffic shapers, censors, and redirectors) to monitor and to manipulate the performance of user applications. Most ISPs do not reveal the details of their network deployments to their customers. We believe that this knowledge is important to help users make a more informed choice of their ISP. Further, such knowledge is also useful for researchers designing protocols and systems that run on top of these networks."

The Glasnost page currently hosts two tools: One tests to see if your ISP blocks or limits BitTorrent traffic; and the second tool measures characteristics of your broadband connections, such as router queueing delays. The researchers promise more relevant tools in the near future. At the time of this news post, the BitTorrent traffic manipulation test tool was consistently providing the message, "We are sorry. Our measurement servers are currently busy. Please try again later." Therefore we were unable to test its effectiveness.

UPDATE: Several users have reported that links on the Glasnost pages result in popup windows with inappropriate content. Visit these pages at your own risk, and at the very least make sure a popup blocker is active.

Asus Sneaks Out Their GeForce 9800 GX2
You probably recall that NVIDIA had a fairly recent coming-out party for the GeForce 9800 GX2 at CeBIT, with more than a few cards on display for all to see, including this one from Albatron.  There were also various other sneaks and leaks from other offerings as well of course but we've haven't heard from Asus just yet... operative word there, "yet".

Asus EN9800GX2, bundled with Company of Heroes
Whatever happend to the "manly" graphics card?  Of course, the Ninja Geisha emblazoned on the front of the card could likely dish out a can of whoop as well we suspect.  Word has it a slow boat from Taiwan might be carrying a few of these to the US soon... very soon.
