Some of the biggest, or at least the strangest news coming out of the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) this year concerned the fate of Duke Nukem Forever. Once thought dead after 3D Realms officially canned the decade-long game, it turns out that DNF is far from dead. Established developer Gearbox has been working to finish the title since 2009. DNF could therefore hit stores as early as the end of this year, but considering the title, even predicting that seems laughable. Instead, let's go with 2011. This is normally

TomTom Navigation Feature Set Comes To Sony Xplod Head Unit Line
Finally, a partnership that works. And a partnership that really gets at the core of what has been bothering drivers for years now. By and large, factory GPS/navigation systems are subpar. Automakers charge a bundle for them, and while they look nicely integrated, the feature set is generally lacking even compared to $100 standalone GPS systems from TomTom or Garmin. But now, Sony is realizing that people want legitimate navigation systems, and if you're looking to upgrade your vehicle's head unit, the new Xplod

Parrot's Quadricopter Readies for iDevice-controlled Launch
Remote-controlled helicopters are not new, but Parrot's AR.Drone Quadricopter is set to make a splash when it goes on sale on Sept. 9th. It will use an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad as a controller, and give a live video feed from two different cameras to the "pilot." Indeed, the AR part of the AR.Drone Quadricopter's name comes from the use of "augmented reality." Meanwhile, quadricopter means what it sounds like: the Parrot AR.Drone Quadricopter (Amazon.com) will have four rotors. The AR.Drone only lasts 12

Sony's Walkman Outsells iPod In Japan For First Time

Duke Nukem Forever Back On and Coming to Consoles, PCs
Some of the biggest, or at least the strangest news coming out of the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) this year concerned the fate of Duke Nukem Forever. Once thought dead after 3D Realms officially canned the decade-long game, it turns out that DNF is far from dead. Established developer Gearbox has been working to finish the title since 2009. DNF could therefore hit stores as early as the end of this year, but considering the title, even predicting that seems laughable. Instead, let's go with 2011. This is normally the point where we'd make some snarky comments about the chances DNF will ever ship, or mock the game's chance of living up, even slightly, to the enormous expectations of its fanbase. In this case, however, it's almost impossible to know where or how to start. In the past 13 years, virtually everything that could be said *has* been said. There've already been websites devoted to all the other things that happened while DNF was in development, and the game has gone through more engines than a LAN player slugging BAWLS at a tourney.

It's hard to imagine a game where killing that thing *wouldn't* be fun, though we're admittedly concerned about Duke's nails. Lavender never seemed like his color...
It's hard to read the history of the game's development and not feel a bit sorry for George Broussard, who probably should've been pulled off the title by 2000. Even then, it was clear that the man was trapped in a cycle of obsessive-compulsive "improvements" that would never actually be good enough to justify shipping the game. George, if you read this, we hope you got yourself some serious mental help. Gearbox, good luck finishing the game. Don't try to make it a legend—the majority of gamers these days probably haven't even heard of Duke Nukem 3D. Just make it fun.

The primary play here is the amount of file formats it can handle -- there's hardly a popular one in existence that this unit can't play. Unfortunately, there's no way for this to pull content from Internet sources, but it may be possible that a firmware update could change that in the future. Pricing is listed at £199, though we're still waiting on details surrounding a North American release.

Sony's Walkman Outsells iPod In Japan For First Time

Even mighty Microsoft couldn't put a dent in the iPod's market share with the now-forgotten Zune, and one could argue that Sony never really tried. But that's in America. Over in Japan, it's another story. Sony has a huge, huge following in Japan, while Apple is still trying to break fully into that market. A new survey on sales from the country recently found that for the first time, Sony's Walkman has outsold the iPod in Japan. Despite the iPod having less dominance in Japan compared to North America, it was still beating Sony up until last month. But a victory like this is nothing to sneeze at.
August marked the first month of sales ever where more Walkmans were sold than iPods. Sony's overall share of the Japanese portable media player market shot up to 47.8%, pushing it ahead of Apple's 44%. That's according to Tokyo-based research company BCN Inc. BCN analyst Eiji Mori said the following: "This is the first time that the Walkman outsold the iPod in monthly sales. The result demonstrated "consumers' reluctance to buy iPods ahead of the launch of a new iPod range in the United States. Sony's strategy to market relatively affordable products may have also contributed to the turnaround in the ranking in market shares."
It's hard to tell if Sony can maintain this momentum. Is it sustainable? Apple just released a new killer iPod touch with FaceTime and a Retina Display, which Sony has nothing to match. At least there's a battle to be fought; we thought this one was long over.

Parrot's Quadricopter Readies for iDevice-controlled Launch
Remote-controlled helicopters are not new, but Parrot's AR.Drone Quadricopter is set to make a splash when it goes on sale on Sept. 9th. Meanwhile, quadricopter means what it sounds like: the Parrot AR.Drone Quadricopter (Amazon.com)
The AR.Drone only lasts 12 minutes on a single charge of its batteries. However, unlike the devices will be used to control it, it will have user-replaceable batteries, with a recharge time of 1 1/2 hours.

Apple has been famous in eschewing user-swappable batteries in its devices, unlike many other manufacturers. That means that a user who needs to replace an old battery has to send it in (or at least, take it in), and that there's no "carrying of extra batteries."
The AR.Drone comes in three colors: orange with either green, blur or yellow accents. Each model comes with two hulls, one of them for indoor use, with protective loops around the rotors. The device creates its own wi-fi network which the iOS device connects to in order to control the Quadricopter.
It's also possible that other controllers could eventually be created or used with the wi-fi network. In fact, Parrot will be uploading the AR.Drone's communication source code, so that other mobile phone manufacturers (read: Android) can develop their own remote control applications.
At $300, the Parrot AR.Drone Quadricopter is not cheap, and thus not really a toy. As we said, it goes on sale on Sept. 9th. Oh, and the big question: is dogfighting possible? You bet it is. You can watch a couple of videos below, and there's also a YouTube channel with many more, as well.

Survey Shows Grown Ups Texting More Than Before
The Cell Phones and American Adults report also shows that 87 percent of teens use their phones for text messaging. Â Although adults may be catching the texting bug, teens still send and receive the most messages: teens average 50 messages a day compared to the 10 messages most adults send and receive on a daily basis.
"We’ve reached a point where enough other people are texting that (adults) are drawn into using it because they can finally use it to communicate with a substantial number of their friends and family," said Amanda Lenhart, Pew senior research specialist. "It may be that folks have been pushed by pricing into unlimited texting plans, which has the effect of encouraging people with those plans to text more, because they no longer think of the cost, and then text more people more often."

- 57 percent of adults have received unwanted or spam text messages on their phones
- 90 percent of parents have a cell phone, compared with 72 percent of adults without children under the age of 18 at home
- Most adults still use their phones primarily for voice calling. On average, they make and receive about five calls each day.
- 87 percent of African Americans and English-speaking Hispanics own a cell phone in the United States, compared to 80 percent of whites.

Sharp Reveals New Quattron-Based AQUOS LCD HDTVs
If you've been watching television lately, you've probably heard some buzz about "Quattron." It's a new technology from Sharp that they seem really quite proud of, and now they're finally delivering it on a new range of HDTVs. The general concept is that Quattron adds a fourth sub-pixel of color (yellow) to go along with red, green and blue; in theory, this makes colors more vivid. Now, consumers can expect all AQUOS LCD HDTVs for years to come to be based around this tech.At this year's IFA show in Berlin, Sharp is introducing more than 30 LCD HDTVs with the key feature being Quattron. There's the 3D model range (LE925E) as well as the LE924E, LE824E and LE814E and AQUOS NET+1. The 3D models are likely to steal the show; those will be available in 46" and 60" sizes, and they should handle 2D-to-3D conversion as well. Of course, Internet connectivity will come as part of the deal, and some units will even have 8GB of internal memory for DVR/timeshift purposes. No pricing information is available yet, but since it was introduced in Europe, we'd expect them to ship there first.
Quattron is the basis of the next generation of AQUOS LCD TVs
In spring 2010, LCD pioneers Sharp revolutionised the flat TV market with
the introduction of Quattron. Today, the addition of yellow as the fourth
subpixel colour is the basis of all AQUOS LCD TVs for the coming years.
Sharp is progressively expanding its LCD TV line-up, giving individual
model ranges the extra benefits of 3D technology and direct internet
connection. In the process, Sharp is continuing to provide the best
picture quality, innovative design, good environmental performance and
big screens.
Berlin, IFA 2010. Sharp is making a big impression at this year's IFA in Berlin, with a
line-up of more than 30 LCD TVs. The key feature of this line-up is the unique
Quattron technology. For AQUOS LCD TVs, the addition of yellow as fourth subpixel
colour brings improvements to both the brilliance of the picture and to energy
efficiency. The icing on the cake for the fourth colour is that Quattron guarantees the
best 3D performance available from LCD TVs, with maximum brightness, brilliant
three-dimensional pictures and even lower energy consumption. The 3D model range
LE925E from Sharp is particularly impressive. This series, like the three new series
LE924E, LE824E and LE814E, also includes AQUOS NET+1.
"In 2010, Quattron is our highlight technology. Recently, the European expert
committee of the EISA2 has confirmed that the addition of yellow as the fourth subpixel
colour is the TV Innovation of the Year 2010," says Frank Bolten, Managing Director of
Sharp Electronics Germany/Austria. "Quattron is now setting a new standard. With this
technology, we provide an outstanding TV experience in both 2D and 3D, whilst also
guaranteeing excellent ecological performance. By the end of the year, all our
premium LCD TVs will feature Quattron," continues Bolten.
The AQUOS highlight at IFA 2010 is the LE925 series. Available in screen sizes of
152 and 117 centimetres, these TVs have a winning combination of features, with
Quattron 3D, a 200 Hertz Scanning Backlight System, AQUOS Net+, a digital triple
tuner3 and 8 GB Timeshift. Its sister model the 40LE924E is available with a screen
size of 102 centimetres. The LE824 and LE814E series are respectively upgrades of
the LE822E and LE812 LCD TVs launched on the market in July. These televisions,
available in 117 and 102 centimetres respectively, also integrate the AQUOS NET+
internet interface. This feature provides users with TV websites specially optimised for
AQUOS, such as YouTube, eBay or Facebook.
1 Internet interfaces: roughly 50 German online portals are already optimised for AQUOS
2 European Image and Sound Association
3 HD DVB-S2, DVB-C, DVB-T
