LucidLogix Promises Multi-Vendor, Multi-GPU Nirvana to a Desktop Near You
Remember LucidLogix Technologies? They're the ones intent on removing any and all potential roadblocks to configuring a multi-GPU system. You know, those little annoyances like picking the right chipset for your graphics hardware (SLI or CrossFire-X) and only pairing same make/model cards with one another. LucidLogix sidestepped these challenges with its HydraLogix 200 processor, a wonder chip that motherboard vendors could slap onto their boards that would allow system builders to mix and match videocards from

HP Settles Kickback Case for $55 Million
Uncle Sam doesn't like it when you try to pull one over on him, and that's something Hewlett Packard had to go and find out the hard way. After standing accused of offering kickbacks to systems integrator companies in exchange for recommending HP products to U.S. agencies, the OEM has agreed to fork over $55 million to put the whole incident in their rear view mirror, the Justice Department announced this week. "Contractors must deal fairly with the government when doing business with federal agencies," said

Purdue Software Throttles Servers With Rising Temps, Saves System Failure
What if your future GPU or CPU could throttle itself back when it got too hot, rather than overheating and causing errors or a shutdown? It may be possible, but for now, this is a reality in the server realm. Overheating doesn't happen nearly as often these days when it comes to consumer computing, but once you add in overclocking, serial jobs or multiple linked computers, things can get messy when temperatures rise above a certain level. Particularly with servers, many are designed to shut completely off if

Fujitsu's LIFEBOOK AH530 GFX Ships With 1GB ATI External GPU
AMD may be killing off their ATI namesake on GPUs, but we all know graphics are still mega-important. And so does Fujitsu, evidently. The company's new LIFEBOOK AH530 GFX is one of the most powerful gaming notebooks around, but you'd never know by looking at the case. It's a small, sleek machine that looks like a standard student laptop or maybe even a stylish business PC. There's no 2"-thick chassis or 18 fan vents to be found. The trick here is the external GPU, which allows the notebook to remain small and

Farewell to the Printed Oxford English Dictionary?
Printed encyclopedias are pretty much dead, and so even are DVD-based encyclopedias such as Microsoft's Encarta. So too might be the printed version of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), according to Oxford University Press (OUP), its publisher. The second edition of the OED was printed in 1989. The third edition hasn't even completed the letter "R." Thus, by the time it reaches "Z," demand for the third edition in printed form may be so low that it will simply make no sense to publish it that way. In fact,

It's sort of amazing where we have come with mobile Browsing, really. Just think back in the year 2000. When people were ringing in the New Year, no one had a smartphone capable of Browsing the Web in a way that was even close to as comfortable as with a PC. It simply wasn't a reality. Today, smartphones are canned and immediately overlooked if they cannot Browse the Web in a respectable manner, with Apple's iPhone arguably setting the original benchmark. Trapped Chilean Miners Supplied with PSPs
With the possibility that they might have to spend 120 more days underground since being discovered a week ago Sunday, how do you keep 33 Chilean miners sane? Psychological stress will weigh heavy on them, besides all the physical aspects of the entrapment. One answer: PSPs. Indeed, PlayStation Portables have been sent down to the miners, in the cups they receive daily packed with rations. Of course, one has to wonder how they are going to keep those things charged. Hopefully they can snake down some power cables,

Is iOS About To Take A Leap Of Faith Onto Apple TV?
It's no big surprise that Apple is holding a music-oriented press event in San Francisco this week. The surprise may be what's not music related. For the past few years, Apple has religiously held a fall music event to unveil their latest iPod touch. This usually coincides with the end of their back-to-school deal (which bundles a free iPod touch with Mac computer purchase) and it usually leads to a huge holiday sales season for Jobs and Company. But this year, there may be another surprise in store beyond the

HP Drops Dual-Core Atom into Mini 5103
Intel just recently announced that its dual-core Atom N550 processor will be shipping in no less than 12 netbooks now and in the coming weeks, so we'll cut Hewlett Packard (HP) some slack for being slow to update its main product pages. But while the company's HP Mini 5103 netbook landing still shows old specs, the product's Energy Star profile and user manual reveal that a dual-core upgrade is in the netbook's cards. As originally configured, the HP Mini 5103 comes with the now oldie-moldy, single-core N455

Intel Posts Disappointing Third Quarter Results, Spends Money to Cheer Up
Intel, the largest chip maker in all the known galaxies, announced third-quarter revenue will be below what the company was initially expecting. The Santa Clara chip maker now says it will likely pull in $11 billion in revenue (plus or minus $200 million, which to Intel is like loose change in the pocket), compared to the previous expectation of up to $12 billion. But don't go worrying yourself over the state of Intel's business. Despite missing the mark for third-quarter revenue, the company remains in strong

Samsung Captivate Android Smartphone Review
Smartphone manufacturers have been using very boastful smartphone names lately—everything from the HTC Droid Incredible to the Motorola Droid X (where X stands for extreme). Certainly with names such as these, expectations will be high. We've already taken a look at both of these phones and deemed them to be worthy competitors in today's smartphone market. Samsung is following in line with this trend of offering a smartphone with a name that tends to evoke great expectations with its Captivate smartphone.

Intel Buys Infineon's Wireless Unit For $1.4 Billion; Plans To Integrate Into Notebooks And Smartphones
It was a deal rumored to go down a few days ago, and now that a week has begun fresh, Intel and Infineon are officially tying the knot. Infineon isn't a name that's unheard of, but many in the consumer space are probably unaware of what kind of technology they build behind-the-scenes. They're probably best known for their memory endeavors, but Intel's more interested in their Wireless Solutions Business. Really interested, in fact. Interested enough to spend $1.4 billion in order to buy it, with the deal expected

Particularly with servers, many are designed to shut completely off if temperatures soar beyond a certain point in order to save the machine from irreparable damage.

But shutting down a machine in order to save it from melting, so to speak, isn't exactly the best option. Many long-term tasks that take months to finish can be ruined, requiring that the task be started again. That can cost companies and universities weeks, if not months, in research time. A new software developed by Patrick Finnegan, a systems administrator at Purdue University, enables servers to sense when temperatures are about to rise above a certain point and instead of shutting down and waving a white flag, they simply throttle back extensively until cooling machines catch up. This kills about 70% to 80% of the workflow, but users do see a power savings, and moreover, no work is lost. It's better to have a task slowed than to lose it forever, or at least that's the prevailing logic.

The software is now being sold for $250. Finnegan designed the software using a "clock frequency scaling driver available for the Linux kernel, which can control both Intel and AMD chipsets with frequency scaling capabilities" It also "also relies on Altair job scheduling software as well as a set of cluster management tools from the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory." Purdue itself has used the software to save system failures twice already, and it worked great both times. Here's hoping for even more fail-safe options for our own computers of the future.

Hopefully they can snake down some power cables, and hey, while they're at it, how about a cable to allow Internet access? In that small area, a wireless router would work fine if it was cabled to broadband. Indeed, they'd then have to send down some laptops or iPads, but hey, these guys need a diversion.

The mine first caved in on August 5th. After 17 days, the men were found as rescuers used hit-and-miss methodology to bore holes down to their level. They were finally rewarded with success when a note was attached to one of the drills.

Fujitsu's LIFEBOOK AH530 GFX Ships With 1GB ATI External GPU

The company's new LIFEBOOK AH530 GFX is one of the most powerful gaming notebooks around, but you'd never know by looking at the case. It's a small, sleek machine that looks like a standard student laptop or maybe even a stylish business PC. There's no 2"-thick chassis or 18 fan vents to be found.

The trick here is the external GPU, which allows the notebook to remain small and nimble while giving hardcore gamers the ability to beef up the frame rates whenever they feel like attaching a graphics card. The notebook really is the best of both worlds. There's an on-board ATI Mobility Radeon HD550v with 1GB of RAM able to push through Blu-ray movies and modern games, but the integrated set will handle standard Office duties fine when the ATI card isn't needed. Intel's Core 2010 lineup is there on the CPU end, with a 15.6" display, HDMI output, two color options (blue and black), a spill-resistant keyboard and a full number pad rounding things out. It's available to pre-order now across the EMEA region, with the first shipments planned for shipment in mere days. Hopefully it will make a North American debut shortly (with a price that's not too painful).

LIFEBOOK AH530 GFX model users will experience the power of external graphics for demanding graphics applications and video, thanks to the on-board ATI Mobility Radeon HD550v graphics with a dedicated 1GB video memory. Users can choose between a Blu-ray Disc™ drive or a DVD-drive, and LIFEBOOK AH530 GFX models are equipped with the new Intel® Core™ processors that deliver smart performance adapted to user needs, for a faster and more responsive user experience.

Farewell to the Printed Oxford English Dictionary?

The second edition of the OED was printed in 1989. The third edition hasn't even completed the letter "R." Thus, by the time it reaches "Z," demand for the third edition in printed form may be so low that it will simply make no sense to publish it that way. In fact, according to the OUP, the digital version of the Oxford English Dictionary gets 2 million hits a month from subscribers, who pay $295 a year for the service in the U.S. Meanwhile, the current printed edition, all 20-volumes and 130 pounds of it, priced at $1,165, has sold only about 30,000 sets all told.

A statement from the OUP said, "At present we are experiencing increasing demand for the online product. However, a print version will certainly be considered if there is sufficient demand at the time of publication."

The OED was first published (in parts) beginning in 1884. The complete text was published in 1928. Meanwhile, the online edition was launched in 2000. Obviously, it's far easier for OUP to update a digital edition than a printed one. While the OED hasn't been published in printed form since 1989, online editors put updates out every three months.

In December, the online version will be relaunched with its first major update since 2000. The new site will include a historical thesaurus to make cross-referencing easier.

Google's Android also has a remarkable Browser, but now that mobile Web surfing has become so popular, consumers are being shown alternatives to stock Browsers in an attempt to spruce up the market and forge ahead in mobile surfing. It's becoming clear that mobile surfing is the future, so aligning mobile browsers with desktop browsers seems like a logical step to take. After years of work, Mozilla has recently released what could be viewed as the most significant mobile Browser release since the original WebKit iPhone browser.

The Alpha build of the Fennec (mobile Firefox) browser is now online and available to download for Android and Nokia's N900. It's the world's first mobile browser to add support for add-ons, and it also syncs with your desktop browsing sessions. Firefox Sync is built-in into the browser, which provides seamless access to Awesome Bar browsing history, bookmarks, passwords, form-fill data and open tabs. The build is nowhere near perfect, but unless you're scared of trying new things, it's probably worth a try. You might just switch and never go back. A video briefing is in the Via link below.

Help! Dell no display...
Hey all,
Dell Inspiron 1525 here.
I guess you could say I was 'refurbishing' this computer. It was only a couple years old and I bought it for 20 bucks. The original problem was that there was no display..a blank screen on startup and nothing else.
I transferred the guts of the notebook to a new base/casing. Thinking something may have been a loose connection, as well. So I swapped it all over to a new base..new battary and powerplug too. Same problem. Th enotebook powers on fine, the lights onthe front come on. But there's just a black screen. I THINK I saw a couple of times in the corner of my eye..a white flash. I replaced the HD cause I've seen Dell Inspirons do this when the HD craps out, too. But still, same problem. Also, from the indication on the lights I think its also rebooting bvut I can't tell for sure cause I have no display. But, you know when a system boots up the caps light usually comes on for a second and you can heard the DVD spin up ( if there's one present in the drive) ? Well..seems to me as if its doing that...but again, no diplay.
Could this be the inverter? And is this hard to replace? I've disassembled Dell Inspiron's and many notebooks and computers before but I've never replaced an inverter.
