Long Expected, YouTube Wades into Live Streaming
The initial trial of YouTube's live streaming will begin today for a two day test. The results of this 2 day test run will be analyzed and will help determine the amount of participation and the time frame of its implementation. "This is just an initial trial, a first step," said YouTube product manager Josh Siegel. "We're going to look at a whole bunch of data about the performance of our new platform and then, based on that, make decisions about how we'll open it up, with the goal of opening it up to all of our partners over time." Russia Uses Microsoft to Suppress Dissent
Russia seems to be stepping back in time and the word 'dissident' is being used more freely. Russian authorities have a somewhat reluctant partner in search and seizure raids these days: Microsoft. Maybe the next ploy will be Disney to search for counterfeit Mickey Mouse ears. As the ploy grows common, the authorities are receiving key assistance from an unexpected partner: Microsoft itself. In politically tinged inquiries across Russia, lawyers retained by Microsoft have staunchly backed the police. Interviews and a review of law enforcement documents show that in recent cases, Microsoft lawyers made statements describing the company as a victim and arguing that criminal charges should be pursued. 11 Infamous Software Bugs
You may have missed it altogether because of the importance of 9/11, but 9/9 was Debugging Day. The importance of perfect coding can't be stressed enough when millions of dollars, careers and even lives can rest on only one key stroke. Don't expect this collection to contain tales of the Ping of Death or other faults exploited by hackers and malware such as the Spanair crash of 2008 or the possibly apocryphal tale of the CIA sabotaging the Soviet gas pipeline. Nor will it include deliberate decisions by programmers that came back to haunt them later, as with Y2K.Instead, this story is about outright programming errors that caused key failures in their own right. Militarized Skateboard Perfect for Hipster Invasions
I can visualize the questionnaire at the army recruiter now using terms like 'stoked, grind, rock and roll or poser' when interviewing new infantry recruits. The DTV Shredder is a Segway on mega-steroids, Dude. Comments

Is Google Making Web Surfers Dumber?
Google is the Swiss Army Knife of the internet, making our lives much simpler in regard to internet use. As a result of all this pampering are we the better for it or is it doing more harm than good? Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently hinted at his company's grand vision for the future of search, which involves Google giving you search results before you even think you want to search. The idea is that as you walk around your mobile device interrupts you and tells you what it thinks you will want to know. You won't Google it. Google will Google you! Comments

IE9: Graphics Acceleration Featured in Beta release
On Wednesday, Microsoft will roll out the beta of IE9 in San Francisco. The talking point on the new version of Internet Explorer will be on graphics acceleration, resulting in overall faster browser performance. Johnson claims that full hardware acceleration is achieved in three steps: Content Rendering (common HTML elements), Page Composition (image-intensive scenarios), and Desktop Composition (composition of final screen display). As a result, IE9 doesn't sacrifice performance for cross-platform compatibility. "When there is a desire to run across multiple platforms, developers introduce abstraction layers and inevitably make trade-offs, which ultimately impact performance and reduce the ability of a browser to achieve 'native' performance" Comments

HP to Buy ArcSight for $1.5 B
Just weeks after buying 3Par, HP is looking to acquire another company. ArcSight provides system administrators with a tool to monitor their networks for signs of hacking and unauthorized activity. If the report is true, it will be HP's second big acquisition in recent weeks. On Sept. 2 it ended a bidding war with Dell, agreeing to pay $2.35 billion for virtualized storage vendor 3Par. Comments

15" Dual Screen Acer Laptop
A new dual-screen Acer laptop has shown up in pictures. One screen acts as a usual display does, and the second as a keyboard/trackpad. The laptop isn't expected until the end of next year, so specs are unknown. Pretty neat idea, but I can't imagine it being that practical and enjoyable to use. Comments

Yahoo and Alibaba Woes
Looks like Alibaba is getting pretty fed up with Yahoo. David Wei, CEO of Alibaba, has gone on record saying they do not need Yahoo anymore. Good job screwing up your most lucrative partnership, Carol. This could very well end up signaling the long-coming death of Yahoo. "Why do we need a financial investor with no business synergy or technology?" Wei said to Bloomberg on Friday. What's going on behind the scenes? In short, Jack Ma wants Yahoo out of his company, but Yahoo knows it would be crazy to sell before two of the most lucrative divisions of Alibaba, Taobao and Alipay, go public. And according to several sources close to both companies Carol Bartz is making a tense situation worse. Bartz has been widely criticized for Yahoo's lack of stock appreciation, revenue or traffic growth during her almost two-year tenure as Yahoo CEO. Comments

Cisco Doubles CEO's Pay as Profits Soar
Cisco Systems' Chief Executive John Chambers recently saw his compensation jump from $9.2 million up to $18.9 million. The increase is a result of a massive rise in value of the stock and options awards, plus his cash bonus. Not too shabby. The company's profits were up 79 percent year-over-year, and Chambers said then that Cisco's "strategy and vision is absolutely working. We are gaining market share and growing revenue." Comments

Yay Buttons!
Sony has launched a website to try and combat some of the hype for Microsoft's new Kinect system. "Could you imagine gaming without buttons?" I must be a visionary . If you really want to get into it, you can even click to hear comments from Sony's (pretend) VP of Realistic Movements, Mr Kevin Butler. He suggests things like waiting for mind-control before you enter the world of button-less gaming. Given Sony's recent R&D efforts, that might be some time away. Comments

Froyo Not Meant for Tablets
Google's Mobile Product Manager has said that Android 2.2 is not optimized to run on the tablet form factor, and that Android Market will not be available on devices which don't allow applications to run correctly. While the spokesperson declined to comment, Android 3.0, also known as Gingerbread, is expected to be tailored and optimized for tablets. Google noted: "Applications do not need to work with the actual physical size or density of the device screen. At run time, the platform handles the loading of the correct size or density resources, based on the generalized size or density of the current device screen, and adapts them to the actual pixel map of the screen." In other words, applications running on Android 2.2-based tablets will work, even if they won't be perfect for the 7-inch screen of the Galaxy Tab. Comments
