HP readies dual-core Atom netbook, the HP Mini 5103
HP is one of the many companies getting ready to upgrade their netbook line with Intel's new dual-core Atom processor. Although no official announcement has been made, the folks over at NetbookNews.de have spotted a service manual for the Mini 5103 which shows the recently announced 1.5GHz Intel Atom N550 as one of three processor options for the company's business class netbook offering.

MPEG LA: free H.264 videos streams royalty-free forever
Folks questioning the future of H.264 can rest easy. MPEG LA announced today that it has no plans to charge royalties for videos shared freely online -- ever. The codec has been free to use for years under certain conditions, and MPEG LA's agreed not to charge free videos until December 31, 2015, after which it was unclear what the situation would be.

Google launches dedicated site for real-time search
Google has taken its real-time search offering to the next step, adding many new features and launching a dedicated site for the service. The company added real-time features to its main engine last year, but starting today, users can swing by Google.com/realtime to track up-to-the-minute information that pours out of places like Twitter and Facebook. Google notes that the page is still rolling out and you can use this link if the aforementioned URL doesn't work yet.

Jumpstarting its second-hand game business, Best Buy has expanded its online trade-in program to nearly 600 stores with more locations coming soon. Beginning this Sunday, August 29, you'll be able to haul your pre-owned games to a participating store, waltz up to the customer service desk, and fork them over for a Best Buy gift card.

Nielsen: Microsoft's search share up 51% on-year
Nielsen has published its US search statistics for July, revealing an impressive 51% year-over-year increase for Microsoft's sites (MSN/Windows Live/Bing), which held 13.6% of the market. Yahoo, which is now powered by Bing behind the curtain, represented a 14.3% share last month, falling 17% from a year prior. Despite the contrasting performance on-year, both companies witnessed a similar sequential increase of 4% and 2% respectively.

In creating the company's first console, Goto said he wanted to keep things simple.
