Netflix app now available on the iPhone and iPod touch
Netflix streaming has been available to iPad users since the device's launch back in April, but starting today the service can also be accessed on the smaller screens of the iPhone and iPod touch. The app lets you access your Instant Queue to view videos you've saved for later viewing, browse by genre or search for specific titles from the service's growing library, and sync with other devices so you can start watching a video on your desktop and resume where you left off on the iPhone.

Acer's LumiRead e-reader to debut in Germany next week
After an initial announcement back in May, it looks like Acer is finally ready to make its official debut in the e-reader market. According to Lesen's sources at the company, the LumiRead will make an appearance at the upcoming IFA electronics fair in Berlin next week and then hit German stores in October. Availability in other markets wasn't mentioned but it's likely that other European countries will be getting it shortly as well.

Rustock botnet responsible for 41% of all spam
Botnets are now responsible for 95% of all spam, up from 84% in April, and nearly half of it comes from only one botnet according to Symantec. A whopping 41% of the Internet's spam is attributed to Rustock, which infects around 1.3 million computers. That number has decreased from 2.5 million machines in April, but the volume of spam it outputs has actually risen.

Dual-core Atom netbooks by Asus, Gigabyte, Lenovo surface
The race is on for netbook manufacturers to ship systems with Intel's new dual-core Atom N550 processor, and it seems Asus, Gigabyte, Lenovo, LG, MSI, Samsung and Toshiba are barreling toward the finish line. Asus' Eee PC 1015PEM is expected to beat the competition in widespread availability, with units due to ship in Europe next week for €349 and stateside sometime in October.

AMD has slipped out a new set of graphics drivers for Radeon users. Catalyst 10.8 adds a number of features, including support for OpenGL ES 2.0, enhanced default quality profiles for watching videos, antialiasing support for StarCraft II, enhanced quad CrossFire performance as well as CrossFire profile updates for Mafia 2, Final Fantasy XIV, Singularity, Lord of the Rings Online, and Aliens vs. Predator. Garmin recalls 1.25 million GPS units with possible fire hazard
Garmin is voluntarily recalling some 1.25 million of its GPS devices following reports of overheating batteries. The company says that a battery manufactured by a specific supplier within a limited timeframe may overheat and possibly lead to a fire hazard. That risk is apparently increased with a certain PCB design. Vague enough for you?

Yahoo search now powered by Microsoft's Bing
The partnership between Yahoo and Microsoft is finally coming to fruition. The companies announced today that the "transition of organic search" is finished, with Bing powering Yahoo's web, image and video searches on both desktop and mobile devices in the US and Canada (English only for now). The shift is planned for additional markets as well, but we haven't seen a detailed timeline.

Microsoft Russia leaks Internet Explorer 9 interface
Microsoft has released four 'platform previews' of Internet Explorer 9 over the last few months to highlight and test some of the browser's underlying improvements over its predecessor. We've gotten a taste of the new JavaScript engine, code-named Chakra, and new standards support, but thus far the look and feel of IE9 has been kept under wraps. That was supposed to change with the first public beta coming out in three weeks, but maybe we won't have to wait that long.

Microsoft working on phone-to-console gaming with WP7
We already knew Microsoft would be putting a strong focus into gaming with their upcoming mobile platform, Windows Phone 7, but it seems the company has a few things up its sleeve beyond offering built-in Xbox Live functionality for things like leaderboards, achievements, messaging and demos. Speaking at the X10 event in Toronto, Microsoft's Greg Milligan confirmed that multiplayer gaming between Windows Phone owners and their Xbox 360 counterparts is in the works.

Google testing VoIP phone calls feature from Gmail
Update: That was fast. Google has confirmed the feature will begin rolling out in the U.S. immediately. Besides being able to make free calls within the U.S. and Canada, or paid for other countries, you'll be able to receive calls. Incoming calls will pop up as a chat window in Gmail and ring your Google Voice-equipped phones simultaneously if you have one.
