Samsung announces new three platter 2TB EcoGreen HDD
Samsung has announced what it claims to be the "world's highest-density, environmentally friendly" 3.5-inch desktop hard drive. The EcoGreen F4EG has three 667GB disks for a total storage of 2TB -- a capacity that previously required four 500GB platters. The company says that this translates to a 19% performance boost in standby mode and 23% less power consumed in standby than its four-disk predecessor, the F3EG.

Android continues to outsell iPhone in second quarter
Some fresh stats on the mobile market are now available courtesy of researchers Canalys and Nielsen, whose figures show that Android devices have continued to outsell those from Apple. Google's mobile operating system grew 886% worldwide on-year, accounting for 34% of smartphone sales in the US during the second quarter of 2010, which compares to the iPhone's 21%.

Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac priced, coming in October
Microsoft has revealed launch details about its upcoming build of Office for Mac. Two editions of the updated productivity suite will hit stores in 13 languages come October. Home and Student will cost $119 for a single license or $149 for a family pack that supports three installations on different machines, while Home and Business will run $199 for one copy or $279 for two. That's between 20% and 50% less than Office 2008's $149.95 and $399.95 price tags.

Microsoft rushes out patch for critical shortcut flaw
Microsoft has issued an out-of-band patch today to address rising attacks against a critical Windows vulnerability discovered last month. The flaw in question involves the code that processes shortcut files ending in ".lnk" and allows malicious users to embed commands in shortcuts that are executed when the file is run. Making matters worse, every version of Windows is vulnerable and being used to spread a particularly nasty virus dubbed Sality.

WiMAX spreads in Delaware, California, Florida and Michigan
Continuing the gradual deployment of their 4G network, Clearwire and Sprint have announced the availability of WiMAX in parts of Delaware, California, Florida and Michigan. More than 240,000 residents of the Wilmington, Delaware region are now covered by the network, which spans 48 US metropolitan markets. Clearwire has also expanded to include over a million people in Stockton and Modesto, California, as well as 214,000 consumers in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and 886,000 folks living around Jacksonville, Florida.

U.S. carriers to trial 'pay-by-smartphone' system
AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile, three of the larger U.S. mobile carriers are teaming up on a new payment system aimed at displacing credit and debit cards with smartphones and near-field communication (NFC) technology. The service is similar to those already available in Japan, Turkey and the U.K., where consumers can pay with the contactless wave of their phones near a NFC chip reader rather than by swiping a magnetic card.
