
(PR) July Semiconductor Sales Up 37 Percent Year-on-Year: SIA
Global sales of semiconductors grew to $25.2 billion in July, an increase of 1.2 percent from June when sales were $24.9 billion and an increase of 37.0 percent from July 2009 when sales were $18.4 billion, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported today. Year to date sales total $169.2 billion, an increase of 46.7 percent from the $115.3 billion reported for the first seven months of 2009. All monthly sales numbers represent a three-month moving average.
"Worldwide sales of semiconductors were strong in July despite growing indications of slower growth in the overall economy," said SIA President Brian Toohey. "The continued proliferation of semiconductors into a broad range of products provides opportunities for industry expansion even in a period of slower overall economic growth. Although recent public statements from a number of major manufacturers have emphasized limited visibility for the near-term, we continue to expect that industry growth for 2010 will be in line with our mid-year forecast of 28.4 percent," Toohey concluded.

Hyundai Intros T236Ld 23-inch HD Monitor in Europe
Hyundai released the T236Ld 23-inch LED-illuminated LCD monitor in Europe. Thanks to the LED backlit, the monitor sports a slimmer frame than conventional CCFL-illuminated monitors, as well as consumes lesser power, at just 27W (typical). It is EnergyStar 5.0 certified. The panel has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, 5 ms response time, 250 cd/m² maximum brightness, and dynamic contrast of 5,000,000:1. Display inputs include DVI and D-Sub. Backed by a 3-year warranty, the Hyundai T236Ld is priced at €205.

Asetek Demos Water Cooling Solution Tailor-Made for Apple Mac Pro
Cooling specialist Asetek, which specializes in OEM water cooling solutions, has come up with a new CPU water cooling solution for the Apple Mac Pro workstation, which claims to bring down temperatures and noise of the stock heatsink-fan assembly. The cooler design is straightforward: two CPU waterblocks that have built-in pumps sit serial across a coolant loop that connects to a reservoir and radiator. The tubing is pre-fitted. In a video demonstration, Asetek showed how the cooling solution facilitates improved overall system performance and reduced noise overall of a 3.06 GHz Mac Pro compared to a 3.20 GHz model. Perhaps Asetek is pitching this new solution to Apple.

(PR) Intel to Acquire Infineon's Wireless Solutions Business
Infineon Technologies AG and Intel Corporation have entered into a definitive agreement to transfer Infineon's Wireless Solutions (WLS) business to Intel in a cash transaction valued at approximately $1.4 billion.
WLS, a leading provider of cellular platforms to top tier global phone makers, will operate as a standalone business serving its existing customers. WLS will also contribute to Intel's strategy to make connected computing ubiquitous from smartphones to laptops to embedded computing.

Toshiba SmartPad Officially Named Folio 100
Toshiba has decided to name its tablet which has come to be known as "SmartPad" officially as Folio 100. The Folio 100 is Toshiba's tablet device that's based on NVIDIA's Tegra 2 processor, running Android 2.2 operating system. Also revealed are its final hardware specifications, which include 10.1" touchscreen with 1024x600 pixels resolution, 2W internal speakers, 16 GB storage, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, USB 2.0 standard and mini ports (one each), SD/MMC card slot, Opera Mobile web-browser with Adobe Flash 10.1 support, 1.3 MP webcam, and 7 hours battery life on a full-charge. Toshiba will officially announce Folio 100 at the IFA event.

ASUS GeForce GTS 450 DirectCu Spotted in the Wild
One of ASUS' first implementations of the upcoming NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 mid-range GPU, the ASUS ENGTS450 DirectCu, has been listed on a Bulgarian online store. The picture reveals a fairly long graphics card that features ASUS' popular DirectCu (direct copper) GPU heatsink assembly, which the company has used extensively on upper Mid-range thru performance graphics cards, from both its Radeon (EAH) and GeForce (EAN) product lines. From what little we can see, the card has one each of DVI, D-Sub, and HDMI connectors, one SLI connector, and a design which ASUS claims to be 20% cooler and 35% quieter than the NVIDIA reference design.
This exposé also confirms the GPU specifications we earlier reported: 40 nm core, 192 CUDA cores, 1 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 128-bit wide memory interface, and clock speeds of 783/1566/~900 (~3600 eff.) MHz (core/CUDA core/memory) speeds. The card is expected to be priced around 145 EUR before applicable taxes.

AMD Kills ATI Brand, Future Products to Feature Brand Change
This had to happen eventually, and it did just happen: AMD has dissolved the ATI brand completely, and consolidated ATI brands, such as Radeon and FirePro under the AMD main brand. Under the new branding scheme, new graphics products AMD launches (such as the upcoming Radeon HD 6000 series), will do away with "ATI" completely from the logo, marketing material, and so on, and the market will, as it already has been doing since the AMD-ATI merger, albeit informally, refer to Radeon/FirePro products as "AMD Radeon" and "AMD FirePro".
AMD explains its move as an "evolution of the AMD brand portfolio", saying that consolidation of ATI-branded products under the main brand results in reduced marketing overhead. It claims to have surveyed several thousand discrete graphics-aware users in in the U.S., U.K., Germany, China, Japan, Brazil, and Russia. The survey revealed that when made aware of ATI-AMD merger, AMD preference triples; AMD brand is stronger than ATI (against graphics competitors); and that people see Radeon and FirePro product names more conspicuous than ATI, indicating a "permission" to consolidate ATI into AMD. The survey was conducted entirely by AMD.
