AMD Gains Market Share in the Notebook CPU Segment
AMD got some good news today in regards to its notebook CPU plans as analysts announced a gain in market share for the recent quarter. For the second quarter of this year, AMD gained 1.6% to rise to 13.7% overall market share for notebooks. Now, this number does seem small compared to Intel's 86.1% share, but any increase is good news for AMD. The rise in market share is mostly attributed to AMD's Nile and Danube platforms which appear in 150 different notebooks. However, things are not looking so good for the desktop and server CPU markets for AMD. In the desktop world, AMD dropped 0.7% to get to 27.3% market share which is heavily outshadowed by Intel's 72.2% share. For servers AMD dropped 3.3% to get down to a 6.5% market share while Intel holds 93.5% of it. Analysts do predict for CPU sales to increase over last year for both Intel and AMD in all segments but in 2011 some uncertainity is shown due to Intel's upcoming Sandy Bridge platform and AMD's Fusion and Bulldozer platforms.
