Intel Getting Set to Launch New SSDs
Intel and Micron have been in a joint partnership since the end of May to produce 25nm NAND flash memory chips for solid state drives. This joint partnership is known as IMFT and we will finally be able to see what has been created in the fourth quarter of this year. Intel is getting set to launch four new SSDs based on these chips which will power the next-generation of products. These third generation or G3 SSDs will come in three models of X25-M drives and one X25-V drive. The X25-Ms will come in 160, 300, and 600GB capacities while the X25-V will be an 80GB version. All the drives are halogen-free, will feature higher transfer rates than current Intel models though still feature the SATA II interface, a new controller, S.M.A.R.T, and an encryption option.
No word on pricing or availability other than the fourth quarter, so stay tuned for that information. Early next year Intel is planning on releasing new X25-E and X18-M SSDs so we will have that information when it is available as well.

Verizon Shows Off Near Gigabit-Per-Second Speeds on Existing FiOS Network
I'm not sure if you've noticed but Verizon hasn't really been rolling out its FiOS network to new areas since March of this year. While that isn't really the greatest news for areas without it, the areas that do are getting a nice bit of news today from the latest field tests Verizon ran on FiOS. That field test was a new speed test which enabled the network to approach speeds of nearly a gigabit-per-second which is just blistering fast. This basically means that if you have a Gigbit Ethernet port on your computer then Verizon can very nearly use that to its full potential. I say very nearly because Verizon only got a download of 925Mbps to a local server and just over 800Mbps to a server over 400 miles away, so there will be some drop off the farther along the line you are. Verizon just needed to do some minor tweaking to the network to uncap the speeds and make the fiber network truly something to brag about. Now, who wants to live in an area with FiOS?

Some Users Reporting Signal Issues With Droid 2
The Motorola Droid 2 has only been available to Verizon customers for a few days, and rumors are developing that the phone is having signal issues, similar to those experienced by the iPhone 4. Mobile Crunch cited several users that were experiencing connectivity problems, and even had one of its review units acting strangely. The phone had issues with signal while remaining stationary, and it wasn't the result of holding the phone a certain way. Editors at Engadget also noted similar issues with their phones. It came as a surprise to them that it was happening on the Verizon network. Verizon had made commercials to poke fun at the issues experienced by Apple and AT&T, but now it could be happening to them.
