Intel most likely to buy Infineon :: Posted by THRASHER2
Even if it is not the best buyer
Strokers of beards and people in the know on Wall Street claim that the maker of chips and bits, Intel is still the most likely buyer for Infineon's wireless business. Most agree that while it would be a lot better for the the world if Broadcom bought the outfit, and Samsung is interested, Infineon is mostly likely end up as part of Intel's glorous empire.
Infineon said earlier this week it is making progress in discussions to sell its wireless group which generated about $1.2 billion in sales last year. That represents about a third of total revenues at Infineon which is seeking to focus on its larger and more profitable automotive chip business.
Market analyst Will Strauss, who is the principal of Forward Concepts said it was too expensive for Broadcom, but it would be better if it got it. Broadcom probably understands the wireless market better than Intel does now or will anytime soon, he told EETimes.
Intel has the cash to buy the Infineon chip unit, especially now that it has ended a long standing antitrust investigation from the US Federal Trade Commission without being slapped with a fine.
It will mean that Intel will finally have the technology to get into smartphone business with a mobile applications processor.
Infineon supplies 3G cellular modems and RF transceivers to all Apple iPhones and iPads. It would also make Apple an Intel customer as Jobs' Mob provides 40 percent of the Infineon group's business.
Apple has moved to Intel for all its computer processors, but so far has used ARM-based chips from Samsung and others in its mobile systems. The chance of locking in Jobs Mob might be tempting for Samsung too, but the problem is that the rest of Infineon's customers are its top competitors such as LG Electronics and Nokia.

200,000 Android devices sold each day :: Posted by THRASHER2
And growing
It appears that GoogleÂ’s Android OS is turning into a massive success. Market share is up, the number of design wins is equally impressive and tens of thousands of new apps appear each month.
Talking to a tech conference in Lake Tahoe, Google CEO Eric Schmidt announced that some 200,000 Android devices are being sold each day. The numbers are quite staggering, as Android devices are apparently managing to outsell AppleÂ’s iPhone and the rest of the competition.
"The number was about 100,000 (a day) about two months ago. “It looks like Android is not just phenomenal but incredibly phenomenal in its growth rate,” said Schmidt. "I should also say that we love the success of the iPhone because the iPhone also uses Google's search and we get a chunk of that revenue when people search on the iPhone."
Schmidt also announced that the company could get similar results out of Chrome OS, but that it is targeted at a different market segment. ItÂ’s all about netbooks, smartbooks and cloud.

Alleged GF106 gets pixellized :: Posted by THRASHER2
GTS 450 GPU
Zol.com.cn has managed to score a picture of the GF106 GPU. In addition to the picture, Zol.com.cn shed some more rumours regarding the upcoming cards based on this GPU.
The pixellized GPU bears GF106-250-KA-A1 marking and it looks like that this one will be used on GTS 450, GTS 445 and GTS 440 cards. As noted before, the card will feature 1GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 128-bit memory interface and should cost around US $150. The size of the GPU is somewhere around 15.2 to 15.7mm.
The price and the estimated performance put the GTS 450 in a direct competition with the HD 5770, the card that is quite happily selling for quite some time. According to the same source, the GTS 450 will not have a reference design so we will see a lot of different cards on the market as AIC partners will definitely go for their own cooling solutions and PCB designs as soon as they get the green light to launch this card.
According to the latest rumours, the GF106 is delayed to September 12. You can find more details here.

Palit releases Geforce GTX 460 2GB :: Posted by THRASHER2
700MHz core clock, 950MHz GDDR5
Palit has just joined the likes of Gainward, Sparkle and Zotac with a new Geforce GTX 460 Sonic card boasting 2GB of GDDR5 memory. Of course, adding an extra 1GB of memory onto a performance class card such as the 460 wonÂ’t have a drastic impact on performance, so Palit also decided to go for a slight overclock.
The card runs at 700MHz for the GPU and 950MHz for the memory. According to early listings, the new card should retail at around €250 or £190. This is no bargain, especially considering strong competition from ATI in the €200 to €300 price range.

Unfortunately, the code will only grant you 7 hours of gameplay or 14 days from activation, naturally whichever comes first. The offer is limited as well, so you might want to hurryÂ…or not.

EVGA releases Free Performance Boost (FPB) for Geforce GTX 460
New BIOS unlocks fan speeds, boosts performance by 7%
Two days ago, EVGA Product Manager Jacob Freeman posted a preview thread on the EVGA Forums about an upcoming performance patch that would noticeably boost performance for the company's standard Geforce GTX 460 768-P3-1360 and 01G-P3-1371 models.
As explained in the thread, the update intends to unlock the fan speed of the EVGA Geforce GTX 460, allowing it to be set up to 100 percent fan speed in the EVGA Precision overclocking utility. However, the company made note that these GTX 460 models are just the first to receive the new fan speed adjustment function. The feature "will become available with an update on all EVGA graphics cards, including SuperClocked models." We're unsure at this point if that statement also includes EVGA's SSC and FTW cards, but from a consumer benefits perspective, we assume that it should.

MSI 13-incher goes for €349 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Deal of the Day: If you happen to live in Germany
We’ve come across a rather tempting listing by a German e-tailer. Notebooksektor is selling an MSI EX300 13-inch laptop for just €349.
Mind you, there is a very good reason why the EX300 is selling for peanuts. ItÂ’s an old, EOLÂ’d model launched in late 2008. However, looking at the spec it still looks like a stunningly good deal.
ItÂ’s powered by a Core 2 Duo P8400 at 2.26GHz and it even packs discrete Radeon HD 3450 graphics with 256MB of memory. Speaking of memory, it ships with a total of 3GB of RAM. It has 320GB of storage, DVD burner, 3 USBs, Firewire, HDMI and b/g/n wireless. However, the 1,280x800 13-inch glare screen is a sign of its age, as nearly all new 13-inch laptops feature 16:9 screens in 1366x768.
Although it’s not as thin as most new 13-inchers, the EX300 weighs 1.9kg, which is pretty good, as event CULV thin-and-lights weigh between 1.5 and 1.8kg. As for the price, it launched at €999 and it sold at €699 before it was phased out a few months ago. So, although it's quite old, at €349 it’s nothing short of a bargain. This is practically netbook money.
You can get it here while stocks last, and if you do, you owe us a drink.
