Ballmer on tablets and smartphones - We're coming full guns :: Posted by THRASHER2
Speaking at the company's annual financial analyst meeting, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that his staff was working round the clock to ensure that Windows-based tablets and Windows Phone 7 devices get to market as soon as possible to counter products from arch-rivals Apple and Google.

Ballmer said that Apple sold more iPads than he would have liked them to sell and that only puts more pressure on delivering competitive devices that run Windows and are powered by Intel processors (sorry ARM fans). The first such hardware should arrive later this year although the real wave is expected in 2011.

The phone front seems a little more alive as Microsoft has quite a few big partners lined up to deliver Windows Phone 7-based models this autumn, in time for the busy holiday season. It's an uphill struggle for Microsoft to catch up but Ballmer seems confident that it can happen - not overnight though.

ATI releases Catalyst 10.7 drivers :: Posted by THRASHER2
GPU enhanced VLC, new Eyefinity features
ATI has released its anticipated new Catalyst drivers for all of us who were unfortunate enough to get stuck at work rather than on a Mediterranean beach.

As we wrote previously, the 10.7 release offers several interesting features, including GPU acceleration for H.264 content in VLC Player 1.1.1 Player. The pull-down detection algorithm has also been overhauled so it should deliver superior quality on certain types of video content, but itÂ’s only supported by new Radeon HD 5000 Series cards.

250 workers from Foxconn India poisoned :: Posted by THRASHER2
“Routine spraying of pesticide”
The company that just canÂ’t seem to catch a break from all the negative karma thatÂ’s looming over its factories, Foxconn, has had another unfortunate incident with a somewhat less tragic outcome this time around.

The company had to shut down its Chennai factory in India after 250 workers ended up in hospital due to pesticide poisoning. The workers apparently experienced giddiness and nausea and the main culprit is “routine spraying of pesticide” last Friday.

Out of 250 workers, 28 are still under observation in hospital and weÂ’re yet to see what Foxconn has to say about this.

Here comes the “BEAST”, GTX 460 running at 850 MHz :: Posted by THRASHER2
Tradition continues
We have great news from TGT, the company that is doing overclocking for Point of View. Last week they rolled out its GTX460-768MB Ultra Charged Core (820 MHz / Memory 4000 MHz), but the real winner of overclocking contest is GTX 460 BEAST with its GPU running at 850 MHz.

There will be tree levels of overclocking Charged, Ultra Charged and BEAST. For GTX 460 core speed that means, 780 MHz Charged, 820 MHz Ultra Charged and 850 MHz „BEAST“.

Some people like Wolfram simply cannot settle down. Guys in his team have broad experience and we like the fact that TGT is now pressing all other partners to do their best in order to compete with new Point of View.

All cards are shipping today, except the BEAST that will come one week later.

2GB GTX 460 possible and coming :: Posted by THRASHER2
Sparkle leads the way
The GTX 460 is a somewhat strage beast, as it is available with 192-bit and 256-bit memory interfaces and, as a result of this, with 768MB and 1048MB of memory.

However, some partners are gearing up to introduce 2GB versions of the new card and this could make things even more interesting, or confusing. Sparkle has announced a 2GB card shortly after the GTX 460 launch. The card's designation is SXX4602048D5NM. It's reference clocked and we can't say that it has a catchy name, but we believe other vendors will offer some overclocked models as well.

Of course, it's worth noting that the extra memory won't deliver a massive performance boost in many titles. Despite this, vendors simply like to include a bit more memory in the package as it sounds good for marketing.

Microsoft will compete with Apple's iPad :: Posted by THRASHER2
Ballmer promises
Shy and retiring Microsoft CEO Steve “sound of one hand clapping” Ballmer has announced that Microsoft will compete with Apple in the iPad market after all.

For those who have short memories, Microsoft had a really good looking tablet which would have made the industry stand up and take notice called the Courier. However it was mysteriously never released, the team was disbanded and Microsoft handed the entire market over to Apple.

Well now it seems that Ballmer wants back in. He said that Microsoft was working with software partners such as HP, Lenovo, Asus, Dell and Toshiba to develop a tablet-style computer. Speaking at a financial analysts at a meeting at Microsoft’s headquarters in Seattle, Ballmer told the world that “We” have to make things happen with Windows 7 on slates.

“It is job one urgency around here, nobody’s sleeping at the switch. We’ve got to push right now – right now – with our hardware partners. As soon as they’re ready, they’ll be shipping. We want to deliver products
that people really want to buy,” he said. Ballmer added that he was impressed by the iPad, which ended up selling more than he expected.

It looks to us that Microsoft wanted to see if the iPad tanked before it came up with a budget machine that did the same thing. However he should have done this a long time ago.

Big Blue buys Storwize :: Posted by THRASHER2
All your data compression are belong to us
IBM has written a cheque to buy the data compression technology company Storwize.

It is not clear how many zero's will be on the cheque but IBM said the deal will close in the third quarter of this year. Storwize provides technology that compresses files and other types of data in real-time in multiple computing environments.
The good thing about Storwize's data compression technology is that it does not degrade system or application performance, and creates space to store more data in IT environments.

Big Blue said that the technology will scan more historical data for analysis without the need for extra storage. One of the biggest problems for IBM is making sense of massive amounts of data in order to provide new services. Storwize's Random Access Compression Engine is based on an industry-standard compression algorithm. IBM offers database software including DB2 and analytics software to uncover and analyze information from multiple sources.
