Biostar TA870+: The Weakest of the Strong
We’ve previously reviewed motherboards based on AMD’s 880 (Reviews/Motherboards/ASUS-M4A88TD-V-EVO-USB3-Biostar-TA880G-HD-Accessible-AMD-880G-Boards.html) and 890 (Reviews/Motherboards/Biostar-TA890FXE-MSI-890FXA-GD70-AMDs-top-offer-for-mortals.html) chips, and now the time has come to take a look at 870, which, as its name suggests, presents us with the weakest variant of AMD’s new generation chip. Biostar’s TA870+ motherboard uses the SB850 southbridge in conjunction with this chip, therefore integrating native 6 Gbps support, but (as we know from previous tests) has no USB 3.0 ports. Biostar decided not to include them via a separate controller, which helped retain the price on an acceptably low level. The 870 chip itself contains no graphics core, and its consumption should be around 13 W.

Radeon HD 6000 Series to be presented in November
The Radeon HD 5000-series has been on the market for a little under a year now and despite Nvidia's best efforts, the cards still offer competitive performance and great value for money. However, news out of Taiwan is suggesting that AMD isn't resting on its laurels and that the company will launch a new family of GPUs sometime in November. An interview with a marketing rep at HIS last month pointed to an announcement in the fourth quarter of the year followed by retail availability at the start of 2011. If the report from Digitimes is correct though, AMD will take the wraps off of the new family in October with product launches coming the following month.

Nvidia to pay royalty to Rambus for all memory controllers
After many months of a patent dispute between Nvidia and Rambus, the International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled against the GeForce manufacturer, potentially halting imports of any products infringing the intellectual property. However, Nvidia has today announced that the two companies have struck a licensing agreement, meaning that the company's GPUs can continue to be made and sold. Of course, this isn't too surprising. Even though company representatives publicly stated that they planned to appeal the decision, a ruling confirmed by the ITC is quite damning. Furthermore, the Commission could have upheld its ban on imports even while an appeal was ongoing, which wouldn't do any favours for Nvidia's profitability. Reaching some sort of deal with Rambus, even in the interim, was the only feasible way to proceed.
