The bidding war for storage vendor 3Par continued to escalate Friday, with Hewlett-Packard submitting a new offer of $30 per share, or $2 billion. The offer topped a $27 per share bid made by Dell earlier in the day.

Among 1,400 CIOs surveyed by Robert Half Technology, 12 percent said it is "very common" and 29 percent said it is "somewhat common" for employees to complain about IT security measures that limit their access to certain websites or networks. 3Par has accepted an increased acquisition offer from Dell of $27 per share, matching Hewlett-Packard's earlier raised bid. 3Par's board has updated its earlier buyout agreement with Dell accordingly, the companies said Friday.

Updated 'blue screen of death' rootkit now targeting 64-bit Windows
A new version of the malware that crippled Windows PCs last February sidesteps safeguards designed to block rootkits from hijacking machines running 64-bit editions of Windows, researchers said Thursday.
"A new era has officially dawned; the era of x64 rootkits," said Prevx researcher Marco Giuliani in a post to the company's blog yesterday.

Update: HP offers $27 per share for storage vendor 3Par, outbidding Dell again
Hewlett-Packard has raised its offer for 3Par to $27 per share, outbidding Dell once more as the battle to acquire the California-based storage vendor continues.
The offer came just hours after Dell raised its own bid to buy the company. Dell said Thursday morning that 3Par had accepted its raised offer, but the terms allowed HP to slip in with another bid. It's now done just that, putting the ball back in Dell's court.

Microsoft boosts access to secure development guidelines
Looking to broaden access to its security practices for software development, Microsoft plans to shift the licensing for its Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) documentation to the more accessible Creative Commons License, the company said on Thursday.
SDL is Microsoft's blueprint for incorporating security into applications. It has been available under an exclusive Microsoft license.
