Microsoft releases tool to block DLL load hijacking attacks

Microsoft has responded to reports of potential zero-day attacks against a large number of Windows programs by publishing a tool it said would block known exploits.
However, the company declined to confirm whether any of its own applications are vulnerable, saying that it is currently investigating Microsoft-made software.

Oracle takes over JavaOne conference
Next month's revamped JavaOne conference, the first under Oracle's jurisdiction, will feature a keynote presentation from Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, as well as the latest on Java technologies ranging from the GlassFish application server to the JavaFX rich media platform.
Ellison will take the stage Sept. 20 in San Francisco to discuss Oracle's vision and strategy for Java, Oracle said.

Requiem for an OS: OpenSolaris board closes shop
Seemingly abandoned by its new owner, the open-source version of the Solaris operating system, called OpenSolaris, has now lost its governing board as well.
On Monday, the OpenSolaris Governing Board (OGB) passed a motion to dissolve itself, OGB chairman John Plocher announced on the OGB mailing list. The control of OGB now returns to Oracle, according to the bylaws originally set in place by Sun Microsystems.

Sprint quietly sells 3G femtocell, Verizon set to follow
U.S. carriers with EVDO mobile data networks are stepping up their coverage game with femtocells that offer extended coverage for the high-speed network, after long offering units that worked only with the slower CDMA2000-1x system.
Sprint Nextel quietly began offering an EVDO femtocell to selected customers about two weeks ago, and Verizon Wireless confirmed on Monday it will offer one "in the coming months."

According to a growing number of reports, crucial Windows functionality has been misused by countless developers, including Microsoft's, leaving a large number of Windows programs vulnerable to attack because of the way they load components.

IDC: Virtualization boosts Ethernet switch sales
Ethernet switch revenue grew by 32.7 percent year-over-year during the second quarter, helped by the growing popularity of applications such as virtualization and VoIP, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Enterprise Networks Tracker.
The actual growth comes from continued adoption of technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet and Power over Ethernet. The adoption of the latter technology is driven by the need to power IP phones and access points for wireless LANs, according to Rohit Mehra, director of Enterprise Communications Infrastructure at IDC.

Intel releases speedier dual-core Atom netbook processor
Intel on Monday released a dual-core Atom N550 processor, which the company says will bring improved application and graphics performance to netbooks while retaining long battery life.
The Atom N550 processor is a big upgrade from previous processors in an Atom lineup that primarily consisted of single-core chips. The processor will operate at a speed of 1.5GHz and include 1MB of cache.

HP offers $1.6 billion for 3Par, exceeding Dell's offer
Hewlett-Packard has offered to buy 3Par, a vendor of virtualized storage systems, for $1.6 billion in cash, topping a bid of $1.2 billion made by Dell last Monday. HP made its offer in a letter to 3Par CEO David Scott on Monday morning.
The offer will force 3Par's board to reconsider its merger agreement with Dell as the HP offer is a "superior proposal," HP's executive vice president and chief strategy and technology officer, Shane Robison, wrote in the letter. Robison said that HP would be a better fit for 3Par than would Dell, as both are Silicon Valley companies.

Google buys Like.com, visual shopping engine for retail products
Google has acquired Like.com, which offers a visual search engine for retail products, a deal aimed at boosting Google's shopping search capabilities and services like its Products engine.
The acquistion comes years after the first rumors emerged that Google was interested in buying Like.com, which was initially known as Riya when the company was founded in 2004.

Open source ECM firm launches apps store
What have the smartphone vendors started with their ways of selling apps? Open source enterprise content management (ECM) company Nuxeo is adopting an apps store approach to push the development of new apps and plug-ins for its software, claiming that the move will "change things in the content management market and drive a whole new innovation stream from developers," as stated in a company blog.
