Toshiba Wipe feature prevents data from getting stolen
Toshiba on Tuesday introduced a new hard drive feature that can wipe out data after the storage devices are powered down.
The Wipe feature in Toshiba's SED (Self-Encrypting Drives) will allow for deletion of secure data prior to disposing or repurposing hard drives, Toshiba said in a statement. This feature prevents secure data from getting lost or stolen.

Browsers' private modes leak info, say researchers
Browsing in "private mode" isn't as private as users think, a researcher said today.
"There are some traces left behind [by all browsers] that could reveal some of the sites that you've been to," said Collin Jackson, an assistant research professor at the Silicon Valley campus of Carnegie Mellon University. Jackson, along with three colleagues from Stanford University, will present their findings later today at the Usenix Security Symposium in Washington, D.C.

Oracle provides ambitious five-year plan for Sparc
Oracle has sketched out a five-year road map for Sun's Sparc-based servers, hoping to reassure customers about the future of the platform and reverse a pattern of declining sales.
John Fowler, the former Sun executive who runs Oracle's systems business, laid out the plans in a webcast from Oracle's headquarters Tuesday morning. In an interview beforehand, he also confirmed reports that Oracle has stopped designing x86-based servers with chips from AMD and has standardized on Intel processors.

HP and Sybase create DIY BI blueprints
Hoping to undercut the prices of BI (business intelligence) appliances offered by other vendors, Sybase and Hewlett-Packard have posted a reference architecture for building a BI system that could cost significantly less than most pre-packaged BI appliances, the companies claim.
"We see customers are struggling with implementing [BI] solutions," said Dan Lahl, Sybase's senior director of product marketing. As a result, pre-packaged BI appliances, such as those offered by Netezza, Oracle and Teradata, have generated interest in the market.
