Rockchip-Based Tablet Displays 3D Without Glasses
Here's a real shocker: 3D is taking over another product category. With cinemas, televisions and even PC gaming already caught up in the 3D hype, Rockchip is now demonstrating a prototype tablet that does 3D as well. The interesting twist is that, much like the forthcoming Nintendo 3DS, the Supernova X1 3D doesn't require any 3D glasses. It's the first actual tablet with 3D support, but the good news is that the 3D effect can be turned off on command. It will probably have to be looked at from a direct angle

Blockbuster Reportedly Nearing Bankruptcy, Hopes For A Miracle
Well, we can't all act surprised at the same time. For years now, Blockbuster has been dwindling in importance. The store was once the face of movie renting, and now it's the face of what used-to-be. Ever since Netflix stormed onto the scene with a more convenient method of renting DVDs, Blockbuster has been declining. Stores have started to shut down, and even Blockbuster's attempts to mimic Netflix never really worked out. And once Netflix launched their Watch Instantly streaming service, the final nails began

Wireless Rates Down 50% Since 1999; 40% Use Mobiles Primarily
There's some interesting findings coming from a new report on the wireless industry in America this week. The analysis, which was published by the Government Accountability Office and is pointed at the U.S. Government, found that four major network operators control 90% of the entire U.S. wireless market. That's a huge chunk, and it looks even stranger when you consider that 60 mobile virtual network operators also operate in this space. 90% goes to 4 carriers (T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint);

Sony just recently jumped into the Media Player sector with a new N100 network box, and now an industry mainstay is coming out with another rival: Netgear just debuted the NeoTV 550 and NeoTV 350 HD Media Players. It supports 7.1 channel audio, but there's no internal storage space to speak of. The 350 is mostly the same but without

Ever since Netflix stormed onto the scene with a more convenient method of renting DVDs, Blockbuster has been declining. Stores have started to shut down, and even Blockbuster's attempts to mimic Netflix never really worked out. And once Netflix launched their Watch Instantly streaming service, the final nails began to sink into Blockbuster.
According to the LA Times, Blockbuster is preparing to file for bankruptcy next month. The company has already had some close calls in the recent months, but debt holders agreed to hold back as the company made last ditch efforts to turn things around. According to the report, execs from the company and senior debt holders met this past week with six major movie studies to "discuss their intention to enter a pre-planned bankruptcy in mid-September."
Unlike Circuit City, which simply folded and now fails to exist save for an online port, Blockbuster will still try to right the ship post-filing. Reportedly, they will use their borrowed time to restructure debt, but exact plans beyond that aren't yet known. Whatever happens, we've all seen this fall coming. After dominating for so long, Blockbuster never has kept pace with more nimble rivals. And these days, that kind of lallygagging simply won't pay off.

A formal debut is expected at IFA, and hopefully a price and release date will follow. No specifications were announced, but it should be quite the video player once it goes on sale.

Wireless Rates Down 50% Since 1999; 40% Use Mobiles Primarily

That's a huge chunk, and it looks even stranger when you consider that 60 mobile virtual network operators also operate in this space. 90% goes to 4 carriers (T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint); the other 60 carriers fight for that final 10%. Sounds like something else we've heard about lately...
The report also found that cellphone pricing on plans has fallen a whopping 50% since 1999, but we aren't so sure that apples are being compared to apples here. Today, people use far less minutes, which are drastically cheaper now than they were. But texting, messaging and mobile data use has risen dramatically, and we're guessing that the average cell user still pays more now than they did in 1999, when they were far less likely to even own a smartphone, let alone pay for a dedicated data plan.
Of course, coverage has improved since 1999 as well, and today the entire industry generates over $150 billion in annual revenue. That's a booming market, and it's not exactly slowing down. The data found that there are currently around 285 million U.S. wireless subscribers, and here's the real kicker: nearly 40% of those households rely primarily on wireless devices to communicate. The landline may not be dead just yet, but it's halfway in the grave for sure. Check out the link below for more fun facts about the current state of our wireless industry.
