Logitech's Latest Keyboard will Light Up Your Life (But Only When it's Dark)
Night owls have a new wireless keyboard to swoon over, as do daytime warriors. It's Logitech's just-released "Wireless Illuminated Keyboard K800" (we'll just call it the K800), a nifty plank sporting ambient light and motion sensors to help deliver just the right amount of backlight. That means you can expect the rechargeable battery to hold its own a little while longer since the backlight won't be sucking up juice in the middle of the day (assuming you don't live in a cave or an otherwise dark environment).

Sony Shoves More Storage Capacity into New PS3 Models
Never has there been a better time to be a console junkie. That's because your gaming dollar stretches a lot farther today than it did when the current crop of the 'big 3' gaming consoles were first released (Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3), with new models boasting bigger feature-sets, and in some cases, lower prices. The upgrade bug has apparently hit Sony, who is now shipping a 160GB version of its PS3 console for $300, the same price as the current 120GB model. But the real treat for

Broadband Half as Fast as Advertised: FCC
High-speed Internet service is only half as fast as advertised, according to an FCC report released this week. It is already bad enough that the U.S. trails a significant number of countries in terms of broadband speed, despite having invented the Internet. It is possibly because ISPs offer speeds of "up to" X Mbps that this difference exists. In terms of those "up to" claims, the FCC report said that ISPs advertised an average of "up to" 6.7 Mbps (download) in 2009. What consumers received instead,

Uni-Pixel Screen Overlays Aim To Kill Fingerprints Before They Stick
One of the most annoying things about getting a new electronic toy, aside from the general lack of batteries that are included these days, is just how well they pick up fingerprints. If it's a glossy notebook lid, a glossy LCD touch panel, or just a glossy-backed portable media player, it's impossible to get fingerprints off of your gizmos for too long. But Uni-Pixel thinks that the impossible is nothing. The company has just pushed out a press release that touts their Clearly Superior Performance Engineered

Zotac GTX 480 Amp Edition VideoCard Review
By now, we all know that NVIDIA's flagship GeForce GTX 480 is a powerful graphics card. For most systems, it provides a lot more GPU muscle than is even necessary, but that's OK with us. We're sure there are many enthusiasts out there that consider overkill a good thing. Unfortunately, the card in its reference form is not perfect and has its own set of flaws that might turn off some consumers, namely excessive heat and noise. Roughly $500 is a lot of money to spend on a single PC component. Intel Buys Texas Instruments’ Cable Modem Unit
Intel may be the world's largest chipmaker, but when it comes to processors found in consumer electronics devices, the company has struggled to compete against ARM. In an effort to expand the use of its Atom microprocessors in consumer electronics devices, Intel has purchased Texas Instruments' cable modem chip division.
Intel to Acquire Texas Instruments’ Cable Modem Unit
SANTA CLARA, Calif.-- Intel Corporation today announced it has signed an agreement to acquire Texas Instruments’ cable modem product line. The purchase enhances Intel’s focus on the cable industry and related consumer electronics (CE) market segments, where the company’s expertise in building advanced system-on-chip (SoC) products, based on Intel® Atom™ processors, will be applied.
Intel plans to combine Texas Instruments’ best-of-breed Puma product lines with the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) standard technology and Intel SoCs to deliver advanced set top box, residential gateway and modem products for the cable industry. The objective is to provide cable OEMs with an open and powerful platform for delivering innovative and differentiated products to service providers that improve the video, voice and data content experience at home.
“Adding the talents of the Texas Instruments’ cable team to Intel’s efforts to bring its advanced technology to consumer electronics makes for a compelling combination,” said Bob Ferreira, general manager, Cable Segment, Intel’s Digital Home Group. “Intel is focused on delivering SoCs that provide the foundation for consumer electronics devices such as set top boxes, digital TVs, Blu-ray* disc players, companion boxes and related devices. This acquisition specifically strengthens Intel’s product offerings for the continuum of cable gateway products and reinforces Intel’s continued commitment to the cable industry.”
All employees of Texas Instruments’ cable modem team received offers to join Intel at sites in their home countries, primarily Israel, and will become part of Intel’s Digital Home Group. Additional terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The agreement is subject to regulatory review and customary closing conditions. It is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2010.

What consumers received instead, however, was a lot less. The report said:
FCC analysis shows that average (mean) actual speed consumers received was approximately 4 Mbps, while the median actual speed was roughly 3 Mbps in 2009. Therefore actual download speeds experienced by U.S. consumers lag advertised speeds by roughly 50%.
The FCC used data from Akamai and comScore to estimate consumer broadband speeds.

The agency criticized the use of maximum possible "up to" speeds, which does not take into account network congestion, poorly performing customer PCs, or issues with wireless or wired routers.

For those concerned with broadband caps, the FCC said that in 2009, the average broadband customer used more than 9 GB of data per month, while the median user consumed less than 2 GB. The large gap between mean and median is because of the fact that, as ISPs will tell you, a small percentage of users suck up the largest percentage of bandwidth. In fact, the FCC said:
The extreme difference between average and median data usage is principally due to a relatively small number of users who consume very large amounts of data each month – sometimes terabytes (a terabyte is 1,000 GB) per month. The most data-intensive 1% of residential consumers appear to account for roughly 25% of all traffic, the top 3% consume 40%, the top 10% consume 70%, and the top 20% of users consume 80% of all data.

Kinect Shipping November 10th; Microsoft Talks Up Windows Phone 7 Integration
Microsoft's Kinect system stands a good chance to revolutionize the console gaming world again, much like the Wii did a few years ago. Enabling full body control of games is something that may convince even casual gamers to devote more time to their console, and it's pretty clear that people are excited about the notion. The real question up until now has been: when's this thing actually going to ship?

Microsoft has been rather vague on answering that, with a generic "November" time frame being the most official data handed out. But at GamesCom over in Germany this week, the company finally put something into stone. Starting on November 10th in Europe, Middle East and Africa, Kinect will begin shipping to Xbox 360 owners. We suspect that the rest of the world will get it right around that time as well, making sure it arrives in plenty of time for holiday shopping season to really begin.

Furthermore, Microsoft is trickling out details on how Xbox 360 and Windows Phone 7 will eventually interact, and it's all sounding really good for gamers. For a long time now, the iPhone has dominated this space, but with Android 3.0 promising a big gaming push, and this, we think Apple may have some real competition coming up soon. It's not the easy street it once was for iOS, that's for sure.

Flash Player 10.1 Final Build Now Available For Nexus One
Yep, it's finally here! Flash Player 10.1 has finally been made official for Google's Nexus One, enabling it to play back Flash content and display Flash websites in a way that the iPod touch, iPad and iPhone can only dream of doing. The N1 has had a beta version for a while now, one that we mentioned (and loved) in our Android 2.2 review. But there's nothing like a final build, clear of bugs, and that's what Google's making available now through the Android Market.

The announcement was made a joint Android / Flash event in California, and it couldn't have come at a better time. Android is really picking up steam in the global smartphone market share race, and having a final Flash Player 10.1 for download makes it even more attractive. We are guessing that other Froyo-enabled phones will be able to download it shortly, but for now, you'll need a Nexus One. We've tested it out and it's quite impressive. There's nothing quite like being able to surf to a Flash website on your mobile. Give it a go if you own one of these phones.

FujiFilm's Latest Digicam Does 3D Photos and Movies
Most of you already see the world in 3D, so why not come out with a camera that takes 3D photos and movies? One reason would be that you already tried that and, well, things didn't turn out so hot. But rather than tuck its tail between its legs and give up, FujiFlim has stormed back to the market with its FinePix RealPix Real 3D W3, the followup act to the ill-regarded W1.

This time around FujiFilm bumped up the LCD screen real estate to 2.5 inches, added 720p video recording, and HDMI 1.4 for viewing those pics and videos straight away on your swank HDTV.

"Last year, Fujifilm introduced the first real, complete solution for 3D digital photography, once again showing our commitment to the evolution of imaging technology," said Go Miyazaki, division president, Imaging and Electronic Imaging Divisions, FUJIFILM North America Corporation. "With the new FinePix REAL 3D W3 digital camera, we have made 3D imaging more accessible to all consumers, enabling them to shoot in 3D HD and making it easy to view their photos and movies on most 3D TV systems."

Capturing those 3D moments is a dual lens CCD system, which are then processed by the newly developed RP (Real Photo) Processor 3D HD. This little chip merges the left and right images into a single picture, and is "also the power behind 3D Auto -- the function that lets even first-time users take stunning HD quality photos."

Other features include a 10MP sensor, 3X optical zoom, ISO up to 1600, and a revised (and improved) menu system.

The FinePix REAL 3D W3 steps it up from its predecessor with the ability to shoot high-resolution 3D photos and movies in 3D HD at 720p¹, with the help of a new RP (Real Photo) Processor. It also sports a new Mini HDMI port² for easy playback on most 3D television systems and an Autostereoscopic 3D Widescreen 3.5" LCD. All components make for stunning 3D still photos and movies that can be viewed and enjoyed through an easy connection between the FinePix REAL 3D W3 and their 3D TV³, or printed in stunning 3D quality.Â

The slim FinePix REAL 3D W3 digital camera with a black matte finish is ergonomically designed and measures 21.0 mm at its thinnest point and weighs 8.5 ounces with battery and memory card. The durable stainless steel construction ensures that the optical axis is balanced ever so precisely resulting in accurate 3D images. The W3 also has a horizontal lens cover with wave detail, which serves as the on/off switch.Â

FinePix REAL 3D TechnologyÂ
Fujifilm's FinePix REAL 3D technology captures true 3D thanks to its use of twin 10 MegaPixel CCD sensors and dual FUJINON 3x optical zoom lenses (35-105mm) that are spaced 75 mm apart to create realistic images that are similar to how human eyes see them. The synchronized control of the twin CCD sensors releases the left and right shutters at the same time. This technology produces a synchronized image with a natural sense of depth, and allows easy capture of 3D movies and photos in HD, and also provides the beneficial unique 2D Advanced Shooting modes.Â

3DHD Capture and RP (Real Photo) Processor 3D HD
The 3D and 2D Auto functions let anyone take high-definition, high-resolution movies and photos effortlessly and audio is captured in stereo to preserve its original impact. Photo data captured by the dual lens CCD system is processed by the newly developed RP (Real Photo) Processor 3D HD which merges the left and right images into a single image. This processor is also the power behind 3D Auto – the function that lets even first-time users take stunning HD quality photos.

Autostereoscopic (3D) LCD
The FinePix REAL 3D W3 also comes equipped with a 3.5" high resolution Autostereoscopic 3D Widescreen LCD with 1150K resolution that displays high contrast images and movies that can be viewed in 3D without the need of 3D glasses. This new lenticular system uses rows of convex lenses that create a binocular parallax effect to produce a realistic 3D image with less cross-talk and flicker. 3D images can be shown in High Luminosity Mode that both display images 1.5 times brighter, and color reproduced 1.8 times deeper4, allowing for clear, distinct and vivid images.Â

3D HD Movies and Photo Playback
Now it's easier than ever to enjoy high quality 3D HD movies and still photos in your home, because the FinePix REAL 3D W3 comes equipped with a Mini HDMI 1.4 port. This allows the user to quickly and easily connect the camera with an HDMI cable (not included) to enjoy high quality movies at 720p and HD photos captured at 1920x1080 pixels (or higher) on most 3D HD TV systems.

Advanced 3D/2D Modes
The FinePix REAL 3D W3 includes advanced 3D and 2D capture modes. With Individual Shutter 3D Shooting, advanced users will enjoy the ability to take two shots of the same subject from different positions, and then the camera will automatically merge and save the captured images as a single, enhanced 3D photo. Photos of distant subjects like mountains and skyscrapers look amazing in enhanced 3D, while close-up subjects like flowers come to life in natural 3D. With Interval 3D shooting, you can shoot hyper (wide distance between capture of left and right data) for capturing 3D effect in far away subjects.Â

The Advanced 2D Modes also allow for independent use of the dual CCD sensors and FUJINON lenses in the FinePix REAL 3D W3. Just as if shooting with two digital cameras, the user can choose different zoom ranges and color settings for each image, capturing both at the same time. With Tele/Wide Simultaneous Shooting, you can zoom in on your subject while also taking a wide-angle shot of the same scene. With Two-Color Simultaneous Shooting, at one press of the shutter, you can take photos of the same scene with a different color tonality. Set one lens system to vivid colors and the other to vintage black and white, or capture the scene in both standard and black and white. Dual-Sensitivity Simultaneous Shooting allows the user to capture high and standard sensitivity simultaneously. For example, you can take panned shots of a moving subject at the exact same instant with different degrees of background motion blur. In dark scenes, you can prioritize blur reduction for one shot, and image quality for the other.Â

The FinePix REAL 3D W3 also comes with a variety of additional functions:

Switch 2D/3D Button: Switch between capturing a subject in 2D or 3D instantly with the touch of a button and effortlessly capture movies and pictures for every kind of scene.

One Touch Movie Mode: No need to fumble to find the movie mode, as the button is located right on the back of the camera, instantly changing from still to movie mode, making it convenient for taking HD quality movies in either 3D or 2D.Â

Auto and Manual Parallax Control: The camera automatically adjusts parallax in 3D Auto mode for an optimal sense of depth. Manual mode is also possible by operating the Parallax Control lever on the top of the camera to easily fine-tune the sense of depth and alignment of the images. Both can be used to eliminate "ghosting" and increase or decrease the 3D effect.

MyFinePix Studio 3D Movie and Photo Editor: Manually edit captured 3D images effortlessly with MyFinePix Studio software that's included with the camera. Separate a 3D still photo (MPO file) into left/right still image data, and recombine left/right still photos into 3D photos (MPO file). MyFinePix Studio also lets you freely cut and splice 3D movies.Â

Manual Shooting Functions: Choose "M" (Manual) mode for the freedom to set shutter speed and aperture. Get instant control of depth of field in "A" (Aperture Priority) Mode. With the built-in "P" (Program) Mode, the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value.

Scene Positions: Select from among the 13 Scene Positions (SP) that matches the subject and situation. The camera automatically optimizes camera settings for some of the most common shooting environments, making it easy to get great 3D photos in virtually any shooting situation.Â

Super Intelligent Flash: This advanced flash system automatically adjusts flash output and timing to capture subjects and background in bright, natural detail over the full flash range. No more flash washout even when taking ultra close-up shots.
