Alienware Desktops Now Shipping With Optional Killer 2100 NIC
Bigfoot Networks has made a name for themselves in a very unique and rare market. There are only a finite number of hardcore gamers willing to pay extra for something like a souped up NIC card, but obviously more than a few are handing over their cash in order to have their ping times lowered. Any true gamer knows that ping times are the difference between survival and death, and the Killer 2100 network card has seen some rather positive reviews explaining that it actually does have reduce network ups and downs

Computer doesn't start at all (motherboard problem?)
I recently bought some new bits for my computer, being;

  • A second hand motherboard (Gigabyte GA-85649MF Motherboard)
  • A new graphics card (Nvidia 8400GS, 512MB)
  • A new 200GB IDE Hard Drive

I swapped the motherboard, put the new hard drive in the bay and put the graphics card in the PCI-e slot. The system specs were now:

  • 2GB RAM
  • 512MB Graphics Memory
  • 3.06GHz Intel Celeron D
  • 80GB IDE Hard Drive
  • 200GB IDE Hard Drive

I had to buy an ATX converter (20 pin to 24 pin), but that was the only hardware problem I seemed to have. I plugged the power cable in, the PSU fan started and the computer beeped (the motherboard is at http://bit.ly/ebaymotherboard) and kept repetitively beeping. I then pulled the power cable out (at this point I had not realised that the CPU exhaust was the only CPU fan, and I hadn't connected it yet. That would explain the hot metal smell). I then swapped the new graphics card for the one that came with the motherboard (as you can see on the ebay page, all that is known about it is that there is a sticker that says elephant). I plugged the power cable back in, and it started! It showed the Fujitsu-Siemens screen (it was from one of those), displayed some text and said system start up disk not present. I assumed that was fine as I had not yet connected either of the Hard Drives yet. I pulled the power cable out again and connected one and the DVD drive. I then realised the smell of hot metal and realised my fan error and plugged that in. I then plugged the power cable back in and all that happened was a small noise and the keyboard lights flashed. Then nothing. I removed the BIOS battery and then put it back in. I also did the same with the ATX cable, but still nothing happened apart from the keyboard lights flashed and a small noise. I do not have any more large amounts of money available to spend on the computer, but I do need it working. I hope someone can help! Thanks in advance :)
p.s. nothing is displayed on my monitor now either

Adaptxt Targets Nokia Users With Updated Predictive Text App
Last month, we told you about a cool new predictive text application for Android smartphones called SwiftKey. Though the app is definitely cool, SwiftKey isn't the only predictive text application available. In fact, Adaptxt recently came out with a new intelligent language software app that specifically targets Nokia smartphone users.
The company claims the performance of the Adaptxt engine is better than any of the present competitors, including XT9, SureType and SwiftKey. To back up this claim, the company has performed tests of KSPC (Keystrokes per character), WPM (Word per minute) and Error Correction.
The Adaptxt software includes a Language Engine which learns the unique writing style of the user and a dynamic Personal Dictionary which stores the user’s personal words and context. To maximize the reduction of keystrokes, the Adaptxt Think Ahead UI suggests words in advance so a user can select a word rather than typing it.
NEW ERROR CORRECTION ALGORITHM SETS NEW BENCHMARK FOR
QWERTY KEYBOARD INPUT ON NOKIA E-SERIES SMARTPHONES
OEMs can embed the Adaptxt Predictive Text 2.0 SDK
Glasgow (UK), Hyderabad (India) & Sunnyvale (USA) - Thursday, 12 August 2010 – Today, KeyPoint Technologies (KPT) releases Adaptxt Predictive Text 2.0 software for Nokia smartphones. This release, which supports Nokia N & E series smartphones, benefits users with enhanced Prediction and Error Correction: words are predicted in advance and Error Correction learns from the user so predictions intelligently counteract repeated user errors.
Long term testing of Adaptxt Predictive Text 2.0 on Nokia smartphones, in conjunction with Glasgow Caledonian University Emotions Lab, demonstrates that users send 31% more text messages, 66% mobile email and 122% more Facebook posts than traditional “word completion only” predictive text.
This dramatic upturn in user messaging volumes is achieved by:
  • true prediction i.e. words are predicted in advance which makes input 42% more efficient compared with XT9
  • 84% improvement on the accuracy of predictions
Now enhanced Error Correction algorithms are included to specifically support QWERTY hard keyboard devices. KPT Lab tests found Adaptxt captures 60% more proximity errors and on spelling errors, corrected 100% of the mistakes in tests when compared with XT9 which is embedded on Nokia E-series QWERTY smartphones.
KPT CEO, Sanjay Patel, speaking from the recently established US office in Sunnyvale, California states, “The ability of Adaptxt to Think Ahead, combined with a system that actually learns from the user to improve the relevancy of suggestions means we actually prevent 75% more errors on average than XT9 on Nokia smartphones.”
Owners of Nokia N& E series smartphones can download Adaptxt Predictive Text with enhanced Error Correction from www.adaptxt.com. OEMs can request the SDK for testing and embed projects for Symbian, Android and Windows Mobile platforms.

Delta Starts Selling Flights On Facebook
Delta Air Lines and Alvenda are teaming up to give users the ability to book flights with friends directly on Facebook. Touted as the travel industry’s first ecommerce capability on Facebook, this initial release of Delta's Ticket Window lets users book a flight and share arrival times with their Facebook friends directly from the confirmation page.
“Our customers are spending more time online and are looking for new ways to connect with us. We’re now bringing Delta to our customers rather than the other way around – on our own website, on Facebook, on travel web sites, on Internet news sites, and beyond,” said Bob Kupbens, Delta’s Vice President of eCommerce.
To offer this new method of booking flights, Delta is using the latest release of Alvenda’s StoreCast platform which combines social networking, ecommerce, and advertising. With the platform, Delta's publishing partners such as the New York Yankees will be able to embed the Ticket Window application on their website, thereby letting customers order tickets for a game and book airfare tickets from a single site.
“We’re looking forward to empowering Delta’s 160 million annual customers to shop on their own terms and give them an easy way to book travel with their friends,” said Wade Gerten, Founder and CEO of Alvenda. “Delta is the first travel company to open millions of new selling opportunities via a social commerce channel."

Sprint Loses Exec Leading 4G
In the past week, we've seen high-profile executives from HP and Apple leave their companies. Now, we've gotten word that Sprint will also be losing one of its top product development veterans. Earlier this week, a spokeswoman from Sprint confirmed that Kevin Packingham, senior vice president of product and technology development, will be leaving Sprint on August 16.
Packingham has worked for Sprint since 1999. He is leaving Sprint to become the CEO of another venture which is based out of Kansas City, Mo. Further details have not been released.
Over the past three years, Sprint has struggled to compete in the wireless market and has lost subscribers ever since it acquired Nextel in 2005. In the most recent quarter, however, things turned around and Sprint gained wireless subscribers.
In an effort to turn things around, Sprint has put its resources into building up a faster, 4G wireless network. Packingham was responsible for leading the group that launched the company's first 4G phone, the HTC EVO 4G. His group also recently announced a second 4G phone, the Samsung Epic. The Epic is one of Samsung's high-end Galaxy S-class phones. It sets itself apart from other smartphones by offering a slide-out keyboard and 4G connectivity.
While at Sprint, Packingham also worked with outside software developers that make apps for Sprint smartphones. Spokeswoman Jennifer Walsh Kiefer said Sprint does not intend to fill Packingham's exact position. Instead, Fared Adib, vice president of product development, and Steve Elfman, President, Network Operations and Wholesale, will continue to work on product development. The technology development team will report to Elfman.
Sprint will also lose another major executive, Dan Schulman, on August 23. Schulman runs the company's prepaid business. He is leaving to take a position at American Express. A third key executive, Chief Financial Officer Robert Brust, is set to retire next year.
With these three major executives set to leave the company, we hope Sprint has a plan to fill the gaps and stay competitive in the market. Whether the wireless carrier will pull from its existing team or hire new talent remains to be seen.
