NVIDIA Receives $25M From DARPA To Build Supercomputers
NVIDIA isn't just a graphics company. Many only think of the company's GPU line, which is certainly their most forward segment in the industry. But they're also a software company, and they also make all sorts of other hardware (like the 3D Vision kit for example). They also operate in the high performance space; recently, the Tesla Personal Supercomputer made its debut, and clearly the company has a mind to create even more robust supercomputer systems. OCZ RevoDrive Review: SSD RAID + PCI-Express
SSD manufacturers have been energetically rolling out new high-end, high-capacity products based around updated Indilinx, SandForce, or Marvell controllers, while simultaneously also introducing smaller SSDs with better performance and lower prices than we saw with first-generation products. As SSDs become more popular and economical, we're seeing the rise of yet another consumer storage tier, over and above even the more expensive, high-performing SSDs: Flash storage mated to PCI-Express. MXI Security Beefs Up Secure Stealth Line with 64GB USB Drive
Ask any budding secret agent and he'll tell you that toting around confidential plans for world domination is a major drag. It's not the morality of the 'take over the world' thing that has him down, but what to do with the data should he get caught. In a pinch, he can try swallowing his USB thumb drive, but his nemesis and his cronies will just extract it anyway, and that's not going to be fun for anyone. This is where MXI Security comes in, the self-appointed "leader in superior managed portable security solutions."

Windows 7 Tablet Emerges from Down Under

OCZ RevoDrive Review: SSD RAID + PCI-Express

Save for the introduction of occasional new features like NCQ, hard drives continued along a mostly predictable path of rising capacities and (slightly) higher performance. If you wanted top-end performance, you bought a WD VelociRaptor or constructed a RAID config or arcane assembly of repurposed workstation and / or server-class hardware. Now the market has flipped upside down. SSD manufacturers have been

Amazon's Secret Lab For Prototype Gadgets Revealed
We've known from earlier reports that Amazon currently has a number of color options in the lab for what could end up being a color Kindle, but the company is steadfast is saying that such a device is still a very, very long ways out. The original Kindle was Amazon's first foray into the hardware realm, and things have definitely turned out great for them. It's a hot selling device, it has a huge amount of mind share, and it has placed Amazon atop the heap in the e-reader game.
So if Amazon can do it once, why can't they do it again with something else? We aren't the only people asking that question, and now a report from The New York Times suggests that some of those asking that question are actually employees of Amazon. A so-called Lab 126 is rumored to be working on other hardware that's not the Kindle, along with some aspects that are Kindle-related. For example, Lab 126 is where engineers are working to master a touch-enabled Kindle or a color version, but the rumor has it that Amazon could be hiring to "build other gadgets [for] prototyping in its secret labs."
Even more convincing, a number of sources confirmed that Lab 126 has been "looking into building other gadgets that it could sell to consumers," with one saying that these new products would be "a means to an end." Basically, Amazon could be worked on products that would enable simpler purchasing of content via Amazon's digital distribution network. Rumors have it that Amazon even considered making a music player and cell phone, but decided against it citing huge competition. Will Amazon be the next great gadget maker? It's hard to believe so, but with the success of the Kindle, we guess anything is possible.

They also operate in the high performance space; recently, the Tesla Personal Supercomputer made its debut, and clearly the company has a mind to create even more robust supercomputer systems.DARPA, the U.S. Defense Department's research and development arm, just granted NVIDIA with a huge gift, and a huge responsibility. $25 million is headed the company's way, and it will be working with Cray, Inc., Oak Ridge National Labs and six top U.S. universities. So, why the big payment? DARPA wants NVIDIA to design a new supercomputer as a part of the Ubiquitous High Performance Computing (UHPC ) program, but not just any supercomputer. They want a supercomputer that will be "1,000-times more powerful than today's fastest supercomputers."
Prototype machines are expected to be completed by 2018, but there's no official word on what all these units will be used for. We suspect we may never know, however, given the sensitive nature of U.S. defense. Maybe a little Crysis 4?
NVIDIA-Led Team Receives $25 Million Contract From DARPA to Develop High-Performance GPU Computing Systems
NVIDIA Team Includes Cray, Oak Ridge National Labs, Six Top U.S. Universities
SANTA CLARA, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/09/2010 -- A team led by NVIDIA has been awarded a research grant of $25 million by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the U.S. Defense Department's research and development arm, to address what the agency calls a "crisis in computing."
The four-year research contract, awarded under DARPA's Ubiquitous High Performance Computing (UHPC ) program, covers work to develop GPU technologies required to build the new class of exascale supercomputers which will be 1,000-times more powerful than today's fastest supercomputers.
The team -- which also includes Cray Inc., Oak Ridge National Laboratory and six top U.S. universities -- is being funded by DARPA to address the challenge that conventional computing architectures are reaching the practical limits of energy usage and will not meet the challenges of exascale computing. The research team plans to develop new software and hardware technology to dramatically increase computing performance, programmability and reliability.
"This recognizes NVIDIA's substantial investments in the field of parallel processing and highlights GPU Computing's position as one of the most promising paths to exascale computing," said Bill Dally, NVIDIA's chief scientist and senior vice president of research, and the team's principal investigator. "We look forward to collaborating to develop programmable, scalable systems that operate in tight power budgets and deliver increases in performances that are many orders of magnitude above today's systems."
"The DARPA UHPC program is attacking technical issues that are key to the future of high performance computing, from the embedded terascale to the exascale," said Steve Scott, Cray's senior vice president and CTO, and the Cray principal investigator on the team. "We are excited to be working with this team, and we believe the directions we are pursuing will lead to radical improvements to the state-of-the-art in the coming decade."
In addition to the NVIDIA-led team, DARPA awarded contracts to three other teams to study UHPC systems. Prototype systems are expected to be completed by 2018.Â

Sam's Club Stores To Gain Free Wi-Fi By November
We can almost hear the cheers from here. Currently, only a few big name retail stores offer free, fast, reliable Wi-Fi on their floors. Apple and Best Buy come to mind, but it's extremely rare to find Internet access in shops such as Sears or Macy's. And Wal-mart, too. But now that may be changing soon, as partner chain Sam's Club has decided to install routers throughout their warehouse stores and begin offering free Wi-Fi to shoppers.
The company hopes to have over 500 locations outfitted by November, enabling holiday shoppers to come in and surf the Web when they aren't rushing through lanes. When asked about the prospect of customers using Sam's Club Wi-Fi to check the prices of competitors, Chief Executive Brian Cornell said he was "very comfortable" with that. And given that Sam's Club usually does have the lowest prices around on bulk goods, we aren't too surprised with such an answer.
Reports suggest that this Wi-Fi installation will help the company push the merits of Internet connected devices, including televisions. According to Cornell: "This will allow a member to walk up to a Samsung LCD Internet-enabled TV and see how to find his Facebook page or stream video from Vudu." We think adding Wi-Fi to stores is a fantastic idea, and we're hoping that Wal-mart catches on and does likewise soon. We suspect that may take more time though, as there are far more Wal-mart stores than Sam's Club stores to get ready.

Blockbuster By Mail Service Now Includes Unlimited Video Game Rentals For No Extra Fee
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and it's pretty safe to assume that Blockbuster has their back against the wall. The company has struggled lately just to keep up with debt payments, and their vast brick-and-mortar network seems to be doing them more harm than good when compared to nimble rivals like Netflix. But there's one thing that Blockbuster has that Netflix and GameFly do not when looked at individually: variety. And now, Blockbuster is seeking to exploit that. The company just revealed a new "Blockbuster By Mail" service that now includes games, which is a first for the company and a first for the industry. Customers now have access to more than 3,000 titles for Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 and Wii through Blockbuster's By Mail subscription service, with both new releases and classic titles being made available. In other words, Blockbuster can now send you video games as well as DVD/Blu-ray movies through the mail.
The best part is the price. There's no extra charge whatsoever for this new service, which is rather hard to believe. New customers can start renting games for a little as $8.99 per month with no limit on the number of games rented in a month, and if they can market this right, they'll have a good case for using them over Netflix. Can the champ of last generation rise from the ashes? Only time will tell, but this is a great start.

Windows 7 Tablet Emerges from Down Under
This company from down under just recently announced the upcoming availability of its Windows 7-ready DreamBook ePad L11 HD, an 11.6-inch slate with a capacitive touchscreen and up to 64GB of storage (16GB and 32GB versions will also be available), which is equal to the largest amount offered on Apple's iPad.
Essentially a spunky netbook in tablet form, the L11 will come built around an Intel Atom N450 processor and (optionally) Nvidia's second-gen Ion graphics chipset, providing a one-two combo for basic computing tasks and some light/casual gaming - or in other words, the exact things you'd want a tablet for in the first place.
Other features include a 3-axis G-sensor, ambient light sensor, 1.3MP camera, optional GPS by way of a mini PCI interface, SD/SDHC card slot, 802.11n Wi-Fi, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, HDMI-out, Bluetooth 2.1, optional 3G, and up to 2GB of DDR2 memory.
Battery life is said to check in at around six hours, which again is on par with a current-gen netbook, but probably a good chunk less than tablet enthusiasts would like. Look for the L11 to start shipping in September with a starting price of around $650.

We can't say how thrilled we are to finally see a company just commit to the future. What this means is that iBUYPOWER is now only offering desktops that have USB 3.0, and we suspect that notebooks will follow suit shortly. And with any luck, more and more companies will as well.
iBUYPOWER to Offer USB 3.0 on All Desktops at No Additional Charge
El Monte, CA – August 10, 2009 – iBUYPOWER, a leading innovator of gaming PCs, is excited to announce it is now offering USB 3.0 on all its desktop systems for free. This includes iBUYPOWER systems that currently feature motherboards without onboard USB 3.0. iBUYPOWER customers will enjoy the faster data transfer rates (5Gbps) when transferring movies or pictures from a camera or other handheld to an iBUYPOWER system.

DROID 2 by Motorola will be available at www.verizonwireless.com on August 11, and it will be in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores beginning August 12 for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement. Customers will receive the rebate in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted. In addition to subscribing to a Nationwide Talk plan or a Nationwide Talk & Text plan, customers will also need to subscribe to an Email and Web for Smartphone plan. Nationwide Talk plans begin at $39.99 monthly access. Email and Web for Smartphone plans start at $29.99 for unlimited monthly access.
