Apple Magic Trackpad Review
Apple's CEO Steve Jobs has a history of showcasing new Apple hardware on stage, generally during one of their highly watched press conferences at WWDC or elsewhere. This gives Steve the chance to demonstrate a new product in front of millions watching around the Web, so that everyone "gets" what a new device is for. In fact, we cannot recall the last time Apple introduced a completely new piece of hardware without showcasing it first. But that is exactly what has occurred with the Magic Trackpad... Apple Magic

MSI's Latest Laptop (CX720) Comes Dressed to Kill
We're big fans of MSI's Classic Series laptop styling, especially when that styling involves the tech equivalent of a pin striped suit, as is the case with the company's new CX720. This latest laptop from MSI sports a set of digs that makes it look like it's on its way to becoming a made man rather than destined for store shelves. Or maybe we watch too many mafia movies. Either way, the CX720 looks sharp. A pretty face will only take you so far (right, Lindsay Lohan?), and in the competitive notebook arena,

Transcend, which is probably best known for its line of flash memory products, like memory cards and USB thumb drives, just launched a

Logitech Wireless Gaming Headset G930 Delivers 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound; Logitech Wireless Gaming Mouse G700 Features 13 Controls; Logitech Gaming Keyboard G510 Offers Logitech-exclusive GamePanelâ„¢ LCD
FREMONT, Calif.--Today Logitech unveiled three new G-Series gaming peripherals — the Logitech® Wireless Gaming Headset G930, the Logitech® Wireless Gaming Mouse G700 and the Logitech® Gaming Keyboard G510. The newest gaming peripherals from the award-winning Logitech G-Series family are crafted for maximum performance, freeing you from technical limitations so you can immerse yourself in your favorite games. “The new G-Series products give every gamer a competitive advantage,†said Elliott Chin, Logitech’s senior manager of product marketing for gaming. "Whether it's a headset with 7.1 surround sound, a mouse with 13 controls, or a keyboard with an LCD that displays critical in-game stats, everything about the new G-Series lineup helps you win, no matter what game you love to play."

The Wireless Gaming Headset G930 immerses you in 7.1 Dolby® surround sound, creating a detailed, positional soundfield that lets you hear your opponents before they see you. With gaming-grade wireless technology designed specifically for two-way, uncompressed audio streaming, you can focus on your game without being distracted by typical wireless lag or interference annoyances.
The G930 gaming headset comes fully equipped, with three programmable G-keys that put you in total command over music, voice morphing and chat clients. A memory-foam-lined headband fends off fatigue, while plush ear pads ease pressure points and seal out unwanted noise. The noise-canceling microphone keeps your voice loud and clear for coordinating with your team. And if you’re dedicated enough to drain the internal 10-hour battery in a single marathon session, the included charging base lets you easily recharge while you continue to use the headset.

Optimized for MMO while still offering the precision needed for FPS, the Wireless Gaming Mouse G700 keeps you comfortable, in control and deep in your game. Its 13 precisely placed controls can be programmed to perform single actions or complex macros with a single click, but are out of the way when you don’t need them. The full-speed wireless connection (1000 reports per second) gives you gaming performance without lags coupled with the freedom of wireless.
The G700 mouse is designed with natural curves to better fit your hand — so you can keep playing comfortably for as long as you want. The quick-connect charging cable provides both power, even when the mouse is still in use, and data-over-cable capabilities for LAN-friendly connectivity.

The Gaming Keyboard G510 delivers the tools you need to win. The keyboard features 18 programmable G-keys with three mode states, giving you up to 54 possible macro settings per game. You can pre-define macros for your favorite games, or you can create new ones on the fly for easy customization.
The Logitech-exclusive GamePanel™ LCD gives you real-time game stats and PC performance data. Customizable RGB backlighting makes it easy to keep keyboard controls in plain sight — day or night. And it includes 3.5 mm audio jacks, so you can plug in an analog headset for clear digital communication over USB.

The NYT report said the deal could be completed as soon as next week. The New York Times report said that Google and Verizon were "nearing an agreement that could allow Verizon to speed some online content to internet users more quickly if the content's creators are willing to pay for the privilege." That, in effect, would be contrary to the concept of net neutrality, in which all traffic is treated the same regardless of its origination.
Verizon issued a statement on the matter. The company stated the following, in a short statement:
The NYT article regarding conversations between Google and Verizon is mistaken. It fundamentally misunderstands our purpose. As we said in our earlier FCC filing, our goal is an Internet policy framework that ensures openness and accountability, and incorporates specific FCC authority, while maintaining investment and innovation. To suggest this is a business arrangement between our companies is entirely incorrect.Google said the following:
The New York Times is quite simply wrong. We have not had any conversations with Verizon about paying for carriage of Google traffic. We remain as committed as we always have been to an open internet.Google also tweeted:
@NYTimes is wrong. We've not had any convos with VZN about paying for carriage of our traffic. We remain committed to an open internet.

The earlier report shocked people, as Google has always been a strong proponent of net neutrality.

Black glossy finish - how do I prevent scratches?
Hi, can anyone advise me how to avoid scratches on things like monitors, printers etc. I use a soft lint-free cloth to remove the dust on them but fine scratches seem to always appear. They don't show unless the sun shines through the window, but even so it's still annoying to see them! Should I use an air can or something instead? Just wondered the best way to remove dust, thx.

Developers Release Two Kindle-Friendly Games
Thanks to the Kindle Development Kit (KDK), the Kindle is no longer limited to just eBooks. Now, you'll be able to play games on the device as well. Developers recently released two new Kindle-ready games. Both games are in line with what you'd expect would go over well with Kindle's book-loving users: word scramble games. What's more, both of these Kindle-friendly games are free. Every Word is a word scramble game where you're shown six or seven scrambled letters. The goal is to form as many words as possible using those letters. The more words you find, the more points you'll score.

The KDK launched earlier this year. Currently, the KDK is limited to select developers. Â Although we shouldn't expect to see first-person shooters or elaborate fantasy games on the Kindle's paper-like interface, it's quite possible that we could see crossword puzzles, two-player games, puzzles, and math games in the future. If and when paid games are introduced to the Kindle, developers will receive a cut of 70%.

Hauppauge HD PVR Gains Full Windows Media Center Support
The Hauppauge HD PVR has a rather large following in the home recording crowd, as it's one of the few devices that allows component recording outside of an official DVR, enabling users to easily transfer content to portable devices for viewing elsewhere. The device itself has been out for awhile now, but a huge update announced this week really brings it up to speed.Starting now, the HD PVR allows Windows Media Center to record premium HD TV content from cable or satellite TV. All that is required is a free software update, and once that's installed, Windows Media Center can use the HD PVR to record high definition TV programs from a cable TV or satellite set top box. Better still, it can record HD TV from any cable TV or satellite set top box which has a component video output, not to mention 5.1 channel audio through its optical audio connections.
Since Windows Media Center is a standard feature on Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional, there's a good chance your Win7 machine has this already. And if you want to record premium television on your box, this HD PVR can now assist. Tempting, isn't it? The HD PVR can be purchased now for $199, and of course, the update is available free of charge.
Hauppauge Introduces High Definition Video Recorder Support for Windows Media Center
Â
A new update to HD PVR, Hauppauge's high definition personal video recorder, now allows Windows Media Center to record premium HD TV content from cable or satellite TV
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Hauppauge Digital, Inc. (Nasdaq: HAUP), the world's leading developer and manufacturer of analog and digital TV receiver products for personal computers, has announced that the HD PVR is now supported as a TV video recorder in Windows Media Center. With a free software update from Hauppauge, Windows Media Center can now use the HD PVR to record high definition TV programs from a cable TV or satellite set top box. HD PVR can record HD TV from any cable TV or satellite set top box which has a component video output. In addition to high definition video, HD PVR can record 5.1 channel audio through its optical audio connections.
Windows Media Center is a feature of all Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional versions, and has currently been installed in over 50 million PCs. Windows Media Center allows users to watch and record TV on their Windows 7 PC. HD PVR adds to Windows Media Center the ability to record high definition premium TV programs, as long as the user has a subscription to those services through their cable TV or satellite operator.
With this new software update, users of Windows Media Center can now create libraries of their favorite premium TV programs in HD and with full 5.1 channel audio.
Hauppauge has other TV tuner products which allow high definition over-the-air ATSC and clear QAM digital cable TV to be recorded with Windows Media Center, but the HD PVR is the first high definition video recorder on the market which will allow Windows Media Center to record high definition TV from a cable TV or satellite set top box.
HD PVR records from cable TV and satellite set top boxes through component video, at HD resolutions up to 1080i. To allow the Windows Media Center electronic program guide to automatically record a cable or satellite TV program on a specified TV channel, HD PVR includes an 'IR blaster' which will automatically change the TV channel on the set top box. For example, if a user schedules a recording of the popular HBO show "Entourage" on their premium cable or satellite set top box, the HD PVR will use the IR blaster to change the set top box to the correct channel before recording the TV show.
The HD PVR has a retail price of $199, and is available from Amazon, Fry's Electronics and the Micro Center computer stores. All current users of the Hauppauge HD PVR can download the support for Windows Media Center at no charge from the Hauppauge website at:

Google's Nexus One Returns As Developer Phone
Well, this is awkward. We all attended the virtual funeral for Google's Nexus One, and now it's back? How does one act at a resuscitation, anyway? For years now, a dressed up HTC G1 was known as Google's Android developer phone, but given that things have evolved since then, the company was due a revised dev handset. And what better phone than the Nexus One to take over that torch and run with it?
That's exactly what's happening this week, but it's a bit of an odd promotion. The Nexus One is now officially Google's Developer Phone, with an unlocked price of $529, which is exactly what the standard Nexus One ran consumers last month before selling out at Google's store. Here's what is really interesting: the new Developer Phone looks like it's exactly the same phone as the consumer one. So...how did the consumer version just sell out? Clearly they weren't really "sold out."
It's hard to complain either way. Google says that these phones will ship with Android 2.1, but will update to 2.2 shortly after you turn it on. It's completely unlocked of course, but it looks like only the T-Mobile version will be sold. You'll also need to be a registered Android developer in order to login and buy one. So, welcome back Nexus One. Hopefully it won't be too weird having you back around.
