Intel, FTC Come to Terms on a Settlement
The Federal Trade Commission can close the books on its case against Intel, the world's largest chip maker, after the two sides were able to hammer out a settlement. Intel stood accused of anticompetitive practices, which is legal speak for being a bully in the marketplace, and under terms of the agreement, the Santa Clara chip maker must refrain from offering "conditioning benefits" to manufacturers who agree to roll with Intel exclusively, or "retaliating against" manufacturers who don't. What are your top 10 PC games?
I'm curious to see HH's taste in games. Multiplats are cool too.
No particular order, just whatever I think of (except HL2, it's my all time favorite):
1. Halflife 2: to me it's perfect. It just builds and builds. There's never a slow spot that isn't at least scary.
2. Blade Runner: I love the movie, so maybe I'm a bit biased, but the game itself is a great point&click adventure
3. Total Annihilation: I sucked horribly at it, but setting a Krogoth or Peewee horde loose on the field is one of the best feelings ever
4. Fallout 3: I'd never explored a such a huge world that was also filled with so much detail
5. Planescape Torment: the first game where the plight of the characters actually affected me
6. Half Life: FPSs can have good stories? Who'd have thunk? I think I'm one of the few people who actually liked Xen
7. Tyrian: I played this game to death. I loved clearing the screen with the Plasma Storm
8. Red Alert 2: another game I sucked at, but loved. Tesla Troopers FTW
9. Mass Effect 2: 1st game in a while that I've played more than twice. Can't wait for the 3rd one
10. Sanitarium: for me this ties with Planescape Torment for best story in a game.

Clearwire iSpot 4G Router Only Connects With iPad, iPod Touch And iPhone

It wasn't long ago that only the hardcore wireless followers knew what Clearwire was, but now that this particular device is on store shelves, we suspect a lot of Apple users will be peering over just to see what the buzz is all about. The new iSpot is an interested, if not limited, device. It's the first 4G HotSpot that is actually only suitable for use with iPad, iPod touch and iPhone. That's right. Just those 3 devices are allowed to be used on the iSpot. There's a MAC address check that can tell what kind of device is attempting to connect over Wi-Fi, and unless it's one of those, the device simply will share its 4G connection.
It's a unique and bold approach, but with Apple devices selling like hotcakes, we could definitely see this taking off in 4G locales. The kicker is the price. Since it's so limited, the unit itself is just $99.99, with an unlimited 4G data plan running just $25/month. That's only $5/month more than the unlimited iPad data plan, yet this will let your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad surf at the same time for just a few bucks more. We have to assume that the monthly rate would be far higher if this allowed all devices to connect. One thing that stumps us is the non-support for Apple laptops. Seems strange to omit those, don't you think?

Clearwire To Test LTE Technology Alongside WiMAX
Now this is how you expand your horizons. Clearwire, a company that has provided 4G WiMAX services to select areas in America for the past years and months, is considering a somewhat different approach in the future. Rather than just sticking with WiMAX, they may actually dip into another form of 4G: LTE.LTE is generally considered to be the 4G wireless protocol with the most industry support. In the long run, it's likely that more carriers will push LTE than WiMAX, and Verizon Wireless is already promising a huge rollout by next year. The company has just announced quite publicly that they will be conducting 4G LTE technology trials, which should showcase wireless speeds of 20-70 Mbps. That's quite a bit faster than the 5-12 Mbps expected from other U.S. carriers, and it will also test multiple coexistence scenarios between LTE and WiMAX radio technologies.
This sort of dual-4G is a dream come true for mobile road warriors. It's still unclear if we'll ever see a WWAN modem that supports both technologies interchangeably, but these tests may prove if that setup would ever be viable. The tests will be conducted in the fall and throughout early 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona, with three main scenarios to be critiqued (mentioned below). We're pretty excited with what this could mean for the future of mobile broadband.
- FDD LTE: Clearwire intends to conduct FDD LTE (Frequency Division Duplex) tests using 40 MHz of spectrum, paired in 20 MHz contiguous channels, of its 2.5 GHz spectrum. Clearwire expects to confirm the capability to produce real-world download speeds that range from 20-70 Mbps. This is expected to be significantly faster than the 5-12 Mbps speeds currently envisioned by other LTE deployments in the U.S., which will rely on smaller pairs of 10 Mhz channels or less.
- TDD LTE: Clearwire will concurrently test TDD LTE (Time Division Duplex), in a 20 MHz configuration, which is twice the channel size currently used in its 4G WiMAX deployments.
- WiMAX and LTE: Clearwire will also test WiMAX co-existence with both FDD LTE and TDD LTE to confirm the flexibility of its network and spectrum strength to simultaneously support a wide-range of devices across its all-IP network.
Clearwire Announces New 4G LTE Technology Trials Expected to Yield Unmatched Wireless Speeds in the U.S.
   * Initial Tests Expected to Demonstrate Real-World Download Speeds Ranging from 20-70 Mbps, Significantly Faster than the 5-12 Mbps Expected from Other Operators in the U.S.
   * New Trials to Showcase Unique Advantages of Clearwire’s Vast Spectrum Holdings and Flexibility of Company’s All-IP Network Architecture to Test Multiple Coexistence Scenarios Between LTE and WiMAX
   * Unprecedented Technical Trials to Test Both FDD LTE and TDD LTE Using Commercially Available Equipment on One of World’s Most Widely Used 4G Frequency Band by Global Operators
KIRKLAND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ:CLWR), a leading provider of wireless broadband services and operator of the largest 4G network in the country, today announced plans to conduct 4G LTE technology trials expected to yield unmatched wireless speeds in the U.S., and to test multiple coexistence scenarios between LTE and WiMAX radio technologies. The new tests are designed to showcase the unique capability of Clearwire’s unmatched spectrum holdings and examine a variety of potential future technology combinations that could yield additional benefits to consumers and shareholders.
“Clearwire’s unmatched spectrum and all-IP network make us the only service provider in the U.S. able to conduct tests of this nature and on this scaleâ€
“Clearwire’s unmatched spectrum and all-IP network make us the only service provider in the U.S. able to conduct tests of this nature and on this scale,†said Dr. John Saw, Clearwire’s chief technology officer. “As we have consistently stated, we remain technology agnostic, but WiMAX provides us with unique advantages to meet the needs of our customers today. Ultimately, consumers don’t care about technical acronyms, but they do care about quality and affordable Internet services that work where and when they want, and that's what we're focused on delivering. Part of our technical due diligence at Clearwire is to be prepared to leverage a number of possible opportunities as we future-proof our network, and that’s the goal of these tests.â€
The company expects the technical trials to demonstrate that Clearwire’s 4G network can deliver significantly higher performance using LTE technologies than any other operator. Clearwire plans to conduct the tests in collaboration with Huawei Technologies, the same infrastructure provider which deployed the world’s first commercial LTE network in Europe, using the same spectrum band and flexible base station platform that Clearwire utilizes in the United States. In the same vein, Clearwire will also be testing LTE on Samsung Electronics’ common base station platform which it currently uses for its mobile WiMAX deployments. During the trials, Clearwire will collaborate with Beceem, and other partners, to determine the best methods for enabling end-user devices to take advantage of a potential multi-mode WiMAX/LTE network. Other participating vendors for Clearwire’s technical trials are expected to be named at a later date. In addition, due to the global dominance of the 2.5 GHz - 2.6 GHz spectrum band, a number of large wireless operators are expected to participate with Clearwire on these tests. Additional details about those companies are also expected to be disclosed at a later date. The tests will be conducted in the fall and throughout early 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Dr. Saw continued, “The 2.5 GHz spectrum band is universally allocated for global 4G deployments, so it has the potential to create one of the world’s most robust ecosystem across billions of devices. We believe this commonality will result in a massive diversity of mobile devices and applications, at comparably low costs, due to unmatched economies-of-scale. In a 4G world, wireless coverage is important, but capacity is king. This capacity is a unique and sustainable advantage for Clearwire, thanks to our all-IP network and unmatched spectrum holdings.â€Â

Intel, FTC Come to Terms on a Settlement
"This case demonstrates that the FTC is willing to challenge anticompetitive conduct by even the most powerful companies in the fastest-moving industries," said Chairman Jon Leibowitz. "By accepting this settlement, we open the door to competition today and address Intel’s anticompetitive conduct in a way that may not have been available in a final judgment years from now. Everyone, including Intel, gets a greater degree of certainty about the rules of the road going forward, which allows all the companies in this dynamic industry to move ahead and build better, more innovative products."
For Intel's part, the chip maker has agreed to follow the rules outlined in the settlement, while at the same time "is not admitting to any violation of the law nor does it agree with the allegations contained in the complaint." Intel also gets off without having to pay any fines, so the whole thing amounts to a verbal warning, at least as far as the FTC is concerned. Back in November 2009, Intel cut a check to AMD for $1.25 billion to settle similar charges.
To avoid facing future trouble with the FTC, Intel agreed to do the following:
- modify its intellectual property agreements with AMD, Nvidia, and Via so that those companies have more freedom to consider mergers or joint ventures with other companies, without the threat of being sued by Intel for patent infringement;
- offer to extend Via’s x86 licensing agreement for five years beyond the current agreement, which expires in 2013;
- maintain a key interface, known as the PCI Express Bus, for at least six years in a way that will not limit the performance of graphics processing chips. These assurances will provide incentives to manufacturers of complementary, and potentially competitive, products to Intel’s CPUs to continue to innovate; and
- disclose to software developers that Intel computer compilers discriminate between Intel chips and non-Intel chips, and that they may not register all the features of non-Intel chips. Intel also will have to reimburse all software vendors who want to recompile their software using a non-Intel compiler.

New 22" led monitor w/ questions
Hey guys, I’m looking for some quick advice about some monitor cords. I just bought a new Viewsonic 22” led monitor for an awesome deal from amazon. Here is the link if you guys are interested: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003HFCDLY/ref=oss_product
But anyways, the cords provided were not long enough for me so I was hoping to get new ones. I’ve been doing some research and figured DVI cables would be best for me. I’m looking at this cable at walmart:
I think it’s what I need but I just want to make sure before I order it. I've read that the longer the cable the worse the quality output on the monitor. Do you guys think 10 feet will hurt? Right now I have two really, really old VGA cables put together so I think that probably isn’t helping this new great monitor. I just have a very basic video card with a DVI output. My new computer is going to be a HP p6540f so it will have integrated graphics with the DVI (I don't play computer games....lol). I want a blazing fast pc to multi task with, so I'm hoping this will be the one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Oh BTW, I think I found a pretty sweet deal on an external hard drive. I'm planning on using it to back up my important files. It’s 120GB Western Digital for 29 bucks! http://www.walmart.com/ip/Western-Digital-120GB-Elements-Portable-HD/14690000

Samsung PL90 Digital Camera Ships With Built-In USB Plug
Samsung has been on a roll lately with new point-and-shoot cameras, and that roll isn't stopping today. The company has just introduced a new unit to their line, and it's definitely one of the more unique (and very useful) options on the market. The PL90 sets itself apart with an integrated USB plug, eliminating the need to carry around a cable or a card reader.
The PL90 isn't too fancy; there's a 12.2MP sensor, a 4x zoom, 2.7" rear LCD and an SD card slot. The only other major feature is the built-in USB plug, which is something that has appeared on pocket camcorders before, but rarely on cameras. The nifty part is that the plug also allows the camera's battery to be charged when you're plugged in, so it serves a dual purpose (it transfers images, too). The PL90 is expected to ship in September for $149.99, and we get the feeling these will sell like hotcakes once the holiday shopping season kicks into high gear.
Samsung’s Latest All-in-One Camera Offers the Ability to Capture and Connect On-the-Go
The PL90 is Designed With a Built-In USB Connector, Eliminating the Need for Wires and Cords
RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, today announced the 12.2 mega-pixel PL90 digital camera featuring a built-in USB connector, enabling consumers to capture images and connect to a computer on the move without the need for additional wires or cords.
“In this fast-paced world, we understand that our customers need to have these capabilities at their fingertips, and the PL90 puts this power in their hands. The PL90 is further evidence of the continued innovation behind Samsung cameras.â€
The PL90’s integrated USB connector allows content to be shared with friends and family quickly and easily, with the camera’s plug and play capabilities, including the Auto-install intelli-studio software, and instant access to any computer via the USB. In addition, users will never have to worry about running out of power with the PL90, as the USB connector also allows consumers to charge the battery without a separate power cord.
“We want consumers to enjoy the entire photographic experience through the PL90, with the ability to capture, connect, and share pictures instantly and even charge on the move,†said Sangjin Park, President of the Digital Imaging Business, Samsung Electronics. “In this fast-paced world, we understand that our customers need to have these capabilities at their fingertips, and the PL90 puts this power in their hands. The PL90 is further evidence of the continued innovation behind Samsung cameras.â€
Smart Features
The PL90 features Samsung’s new Smart Auto (Still & Movie) technology which enables consumers to capture the perfect picture in virtually any conditions. The intelligent Smart Auto function automatically adjusts the camera’s mode to instantly match the shooting environment. Whether the shot is being taken during the day or at night, in portrait or landscape, simply activating the capture button will ensure a beautiful and perfectly tailored image.
The innovative PL90 also features Samsung’s Perfect Portrait System which includes several modes to help users take better photos. With the Self Portrait function, users can step out from the behind the camera and know they will be in focus because the camera tracks the subject’s face and alerts the user with an audible noise when the subject is in frame. The Face Detection feature automatically detects and recognizes up to twelve different faces simultaneously, ensuring that the faces will be in clear focus, even when the subjects are part of a group photograph. The innovative Beauty Shot function allows users to adjust brightness and face tone, while also reducing flaws on all faces in a photo. The PL90 also incorporates Smile and Blink Detection features which automatically snaps a photo when the subjects are smiling and intelligently detects if the subject’s eyes were closed in the shot.
In addition, the PL90 features the intelligent and advanced Smart Album feature. Smart Album enables users to quickly locate pictures without trawling through every individual photograph by automatically managing content on the camera so users can search for images based on the date, time or even color.Â

Wicked Lasers Given Reprieve by LucasFilm on Lightsaber Clone
Lucasfilm has backed off the cease-and-desist demand it had made to Wicked Lasers, creator the of Spyder III Pro Arctic. Admittedly, the device sure reminds us of a lightsaber, but according to the letter that was sent to the Wicked Lasers' CEO, as long as the company puts a disclaimer on any pages that are graced by the Pro Arctic, they will drop the demand. The letter, from David J. Anderman, General Counsel for LucasFilm, stated that based on the publicity and statements that Wicked Lasers had made, it was clear that "The media and public has come to realize that Lucasfilm would never endorse or license a highly dangerous product such as your Arctic Pro Laser."

Wicked Lasers CEO Steve Liu said, however, that all the publicity proved to a positive, and sales in fact tripled. "This has been strange. We felt that it would have been a very bad thing in the beginning, but it ended up helping the business in a very big way."
You can read the letter from LucasFilm to Wicked Lasers (.PDF) here.
