Lenovo Introduces ThinkCentre M70e And A70 Desktops
Lenovo's famous for their notebooks, but those guys also sell desktops. The ThinkCentre line has been around (and thriving) for some time now, mostly within businesses and enterprises. But the company's newest two machines could easily work in a consumer setup. As with Lenovo's ThinkPad line, these new desktops aren't much to look at. But with these, it's always about what it can do for you. The ThinkCentre M70e is a new entry-level enterprise desktop, while the A70 is a slimmer, even more affordable option.

PC Makers Showing Little Interest in Atom-Based Tablets
It didn't take very long for Intel to establish its dominance in the netbook market, with nearly every netbook release coming equipped with an Atom processor inside. Now the Santa Clara chip maker is turning its head towards the tablet space, and understandably so. While netbook sales are showing little signs of slowing down. tablets appear to be the next big thing in mobile computing, and you can bet Intel wants the lion's share of the pie. But will PC vendors oblige? According to reports, Intel is having trouble

RIM Introduces BlackBerry Torch For AT&T
RIM hasn't done the best job keep this one a complete secret, but it's still a shock to most who don't follow each and every move of the BlackBerry maker. Today at a press event in NYC, AT&T and RIM jointly announced the next BlackBerry device, which will be the first to launch with BlackBerry OS 6. No, it's not a BlackPad tablet, but an actual phone: the Torch.

This phone has also been known as the BlackBerry 9800, and it's yet another unique design from RIM. Rather than sticking with the traditional, and rather than going back to the Storm design that was near-universally disliked, the company has split the difference on the Torch. It looks like a Storm from the front, but a pull-down QWERTY keypad provides the physical keys that BlackBerry loyalists love so dearly.

As for specifications? The phone has 802.11n Wi-Fi, a 3.2" display, 4GB microSD card, 4GB of internal storage 512MB of RAM, 512MB of ROM, a 480x360 touch panel and a Media Sync feature that will enable your media to sync wirelessly. This also marks the first BlackBerry with both a touch screen and a physical keyboard, which should please both sides of the audience. Of course, having BlackBerry OS 6 onboard is another boon, particularly for those who felt that the existing OS was getting a bit aged compared to iOS 4 and Android 2.2.

This phone is still a business phone at heart, but the mixture of touch and physical keyboard may persuade some average consumers to give RIM another look. We're still waiting for an exact price and release date.

For a while now, CBS executives have said that one of the main issues with Hulu was control and exclusivity. The No. 1 U.S. broadcaster has preferred a wide range of partners across the Web and therefore did not want to feature its programs exclusively on Hulu.
Data from analytics firm comScore notes that Hulu has become one of the fastest growing TV sites since it was launched in 2007. In May, Hulu had around 43.5 million viewers.

Motorola Reportedly Developing 10" Tablet For Use With Verizon's FiOS TV Service
For those who keep denying that 2010 is the year of the tablet, here's yet another trusted report saying otherwise. It's hard to tell if this fad will last at all, but right now, nearly everyone is focused on removing Apple from atop their pedestal. The iPad has been a huge hit worldwide, and now even Motorola is poised to join the bandwagon. The same company who just recently turned their mobile aspirations around with the DROID is reportedly in talks with Verizon to jointly announce a 10" tablet that would rival the iPad and other Microsoft-based tablets.

The 10" tablet, which doesn't yet have a public name, would be based around Google's Android operating system. The real kicker, however, is that it would work seamlessly with Verizon's FiOS TV and Internet offerings, enabling users to watch television right on the screen. It would also reportedly support Flash (thus using Android 2.2), and it could launch as early as this Fall in the U.S.

At a glance, this definitely sounds good. But choosing Verizon as a television partner seems like a strange move. FiOS is only available in a handful of areas in only a select few U.S. states, and the company has more or less stated that they are halting any further FiOS expansion. So right away, Motorola would be limiting their buyer pool rather significantly. But it's possible that none of the major cable carriers wanted to sign up for a partnership. Either way, we should know soon enough what's true and what's not behind all of this.

BlackBerry 6: RIM's New Mobile Operating System Is Revealed
Yesterday, RIM and AT&T both announced a new phone, the BlackBerry Torch. It's an interesting twist on a common device, but what's probably more interesting in the long run than the phone itself is the software that's on it. Lately, it has all been about software in the smartphone business, with WebOS, Android and iOS taking shots at one another in order to become viewed as the most fully featured mobile OS around.

BlackBerry OS 5 was never built to compete with those other systems, but BlackBerry OS 6 is hoping to change all of that. OS 6 will ship on the Torch that just launched, but RIM is giving the OS an official reveal of its own since it'll also ship on forthcoming devices and will be on the upgrade trail for some of their older handsets. According to RIM, BlackBerry 6 features a redesigned interface that seamlessly works with a touch screen and trackpad, expanded messaging capabilities that simplify managing social media and RSS feeds, an advanced multimedia experience that rivals the best in the industry, a convenient new Universal Search tool, and a new and efficient WebKit-based browser that renders web pages quickly and beautifully for a great browsing experience.

But on the surface, not much has changed. The overall UI has remained basically the same, which we're guessing is due to RIM's inability to innovate too much without upsetting the business-oriented client base that is already entrenched. The new OS will require more power, though, and so not every old BlackBerry will be able to upgrade. Subject to carrier certifications in the months ahead, the new OS is expected to be available for the BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Bold 9650 and BlackBerry Pearl 3G, so if your phone isn't mentioned here, we suspect it'll be left out (notice the Storm and Storm 2 are left out). For developers, a BlackBerry 6 SDK is being introduced in order to hopefully boost the amount of applications in the App World. If you're interested in seeing more on what BB 6 will deliver, there's a video below showcasing the highlights.

RIM Unleashes BlackBerry 6
WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 3, 2010) -

Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced BlackBerry® 6, a new operating system for BlackBerry® smartphones that retains the trusted features that distinguish the BlackBerry brand while delivering a fresh, approachable and engaging experience that is both powerful and easy to use. BlackBerry 6 features a redesigned interface that seamlessly works with a touch screen and trackpad, expanded messaging capabilities that simplify managing social media and RSS feeds, an advanced multimedia experience that rivals the best in the industry, a convenient new Universal Search tool, and a new and efficient WebKit-based browser that renders web pages quickly and beautifully for a great browsing experience.

"BlackBerry 6 is the outcome of RIM's ongoing passion to deliver a powerful, simplified and optimized user experience for both touch screen and keyboard fans," said Mike Lazaridis, president and co-ceo, Research In Motion. "Following extensive research and development to address consumer needs and wants, we are delivering a communications, browsing and multimedia experience that we think users will love, and we are thrilled to debut BlackBerry 6 on the amazing new BlackBerry Torch smartphone."

Visual, Fluid Interface

BlackBerry 6 has been redesigned making it easier and more intuitive, with clean, sleek visuals and natural, fluid navigation. Designed to be both fresh and familiar, the new interface enables a productive, fun and highly satisfying user experience whether using a touch screen or trackpad and keyboard.

BlackBerry 6 offers multiple views that help users better organize their applications and content. Icons are arranged on the Home Screen in 5 customizable views (All, Favorites, Media, Downloads and Frequent) that are navigable with simple swipes. Users can organize where they want their icons to appear, and can add contacts or web page shortcuts directly to the Home Screen.

Also new to BlackBerry 6 are visually-rich, context-sensitive Action Menus. Within a given application, by clicking and holding the trackpad or through an extended touch of the display, users can bring the most common actions or tasks of an application to the surface. In addition, users can seamlessly multitask by holding down the Menu key, which pops up a visual grid of all the applications currently running, so users can instantly switch between applications.

A powerful Universal Search tool is also accessible from the Home Screen. By simply clicking or tapping the Universal Search icon, users can search for any content on their handset, the web or in the new BlackBerry App Worldâ„¢, which is also integral to BlackBerry 6.

Fast Rich Web Browsing

BlackBerry 6 integrates a new and efficient WebKit-based browser that renders web pages (as well as email) quickly and beautifully for a great browsing experience. It features tabs for accessing multiple sites simultaneously, an auto-wrap text zoom feature that can intelligently wrap text in a column while maintaining the placement of a page's key elements, and pinch to zoom.

Social Feeds and Text Messaging

The new Social Feeds application simplifies the management of social networking and RSS feeds and provides integrated access to the native BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™), Facebook®, Twitter™, MySpace™, AOL® Instant Messenger™, Google Talk™, Windows Live™ Messenger and Yahoo!® Messenger applications for BlackBerry smartphones. Social Feeds streamlines the user experience, provides an integrated view of friends' activities across multiple social networks, and lets users post updates across multiple networks simultaneously. Users can also easily add their favorite RSS Feeds from the Social Feeds application or directly from a website while browsing.

RIM's new Text Messages application also adds exciting new features for users who communicate mostly via SMS and MMS, including the ability for users to now view a conversation in one threaded 'chat' as well as share photos, videos and other rich content.

Engaging Multimedia Experience

The multimedia experience in BlackBerry 6 is designed to give users a more engaging and streamlined experience with album art everywhere in the new music and video players. The new BlackBerry® Desktop Software 6 integrates media sync for easily syncing photos and videos as well as iTunes® and Windows Media® Player music with the smartphone*. It also includes Wi-Fi Music Sync, a unique feature that allows users to view their entire iTunes® or Windows Media® Player music libraries from their BlackBerry smartphone, create and edit playlists, as well as select music for download. When in range of their home Wi-Fi network (or via USB), the changes are synced with iTunes® or Windows Media® Player and the songs are automatically downloaded to the smartphone.

BlackBerry 6 also gives users access to a range of camera modes that can help them capture better images. Editing, organizing and sharing shots is amazingly simple, with intuitive options for grouping pictures.

The new Podcasts application makes it easy for users to find and manage audio and video podcasts. Users can view all the podcasts saved on their smartphone, browse a catalogue of podcasts available for download, subscribe to them, and wirelessly download the content directly onto their smartphone. There is also a dedicated YouTube® application, so viewing and sharing videos is easier than ever and users can also easily search for videos using the new Universal Search tool in BlackBerry 6.

Compatibility with Existing BlackBerry Smartphones

BlackBerry 6 will debut on the new BlackBerry® Torch™ smartphone (announced today) available from AT&T on August 12 and it is also designed to run on select BlackBerry smartphones already in market. Subject to carrier certifications in the months ahead, the new OS is expected to be available for the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700, BlackBerry® Bold™ 9650 and BlackBerry® Pearl™ 3G, as well as future BlackBerry smartphones.

Research In Motion is releasing an SDK for BlackBerry 6 (also announced today). Developers can find additional details at www.blackberry.com/developers/blackberry6.

DVD Ripping....
Ok guys, it's been a while since i've used any ripping software...
I tried using my old trusty DVD shink.... but while analyzing the disc it fails.
Did some google searching and i've tried a few different programs. DVD Decrypter, DVD Fab, and Any DVD.
None of them are working. I am on Vista Ultimate 32-Bit.
Either there is some nasty encryption that I can't get around or there is something wrong with my computer.
The Ripping process starts... then progress halts and the activity light on my DVD drive stops. So it's not even reading the disc anymore.
This then results in my PC locking up until I kill the tasks.
After issuing the end process command it take a couple of minutes to go away and then all is well again.
I'm going to try it out on an XP machine momentarily.
I know the drives are fine because I have installed and played many games from them before.
Any suggestions?
What do you guys use?

Windows Phone 7 To Hit Europe In October, U.S. In November
After Microsoft's Kin project failed miserably, more and more pressure is being put on Windows Phone 7 to bring the company back into the smartphone game. Although the upcoming mobile OS has gotten a fair share of positive reports, one key question that remains is when we'll actually see the OS in action for ourselves. Microsoft has not given a definite timeframe as to when the phones will actually ship. That is, until now.
During a recent presentation, Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner let information about the release of Windows Phone 7 slip. Turner said, "Now let's talk about phones.  This has been tough.  This is a lowlight.  For me, the company -- it's tough.  But you know what?  In the October timeframe, in the November timeframe -- in October likely across Europe, in November likely across the U.S. -- the game... we're back in the game.  And this game is not over."
Turner's comments may surprise some, as Europe typically isn't the first place for phones to launch. More often, Japan or the U.S. will get tech products before Europe. Additionally, Microsoft's relationship with the EU has been rocky. In 2008, the EU nailed Microsoft with an unprecedented $1.4B USD fine for antitrust violations.

Intel Dodges Class Action Lawsuit In Rare Favorable Ruling
Late last week, the Special Master in the Intel antitrust cases ruled against combining a wide range of complaints into a single class-action suit. The decision has been broadly seen as a victory for Intel—it's one of the few judicial or administrative rulings that have gone the CPU manufacturers way in the past five years—and it likely writes finis to a number of cases filed in the wake of AMD's original antitrust suit back in 2005.

Special Master Vincent Poppiti found insufficient evidence to suggest that class action status should be granted, noting that the independent claims fell far short of demonstrating the economic harm they claim occurred. Poppiti's analysis of said shortcomings is scathing in some paragraphs; he writes: "Plaintiffs cannot meet their burden with an expert's general statements about economic theory, and simply throw up their hands when record real-world facts fail to conform to economic theory."

That's Teddy Roosevelt, trust-buster extraordinaire, riding a moose. Your arguments are irrelevant.

One can scarcely blame Intel for waving the flag a little, but Santa Clara's PR machine then attempts to repurpose the Special Master's decision not to grant class action certification as a vindication of the company's pricing policies:
More broadly, this Report and Recommendation demonstrates the truth of what Intel has said over the past five years, since these cases were first filed: Intel operates in a highly competitive industry; Intel's research and development have benefited consumers worldwide through lower prices and better products; and Intel has done nothing to harm consumers. Consumers, as well as computer manufacturers, have benefited from Intel's price discounts. When Intel's competitors offer lower prices, Intel responds with its own discounts that lower Intel's prices, just as any competitive company would.
After reading over the 112 page decision we don't think Poppiti intended to exculpate Intel to the breadth and depth that the company implies. That said, Poppiti's decision becomes the de facto opinion of the court 21 days after its filing unless the plaintiffs object. We almost wish it wasn't so. Had the AMD/Intel case gone to trial, Sunnyvale would have had to demonstrate that Intel's actions and price rebates constituted an abuse of monopoly power that harmed consumers. AMD's original complaint, broken down to simplest terms, looked something like this:

1)  Competition is good and benefits consumers
2)  Intel has abusively restricted our ability to invest in future products and sell current ones.
3)  This sustained abuse is unfairly destroying our ability to compete with Intel.
4)  Less competition hurts consumers and leads to higher prices.

Part of what made the case interesting is the capital-intensive nature of the semiconductor industry in which money must be continually set aside for multi-billion dollar foundry upgrades or new facilities. Unlike the more narrow claims of the plaintiffs involved in Poppiti's decision, AMD alleged a pattern of abuse that went on for years and had a much broader impact on the entire computer industry. Intel sales practices in 2004-2006 could therefore be said to have impacted AMD's ability to manufacture and sell competitive products in 2008-2010. Regardless of which company you favor, the legal questions could've been fascinating.

As it stands, Intel's legal cases are mostly winding down. With the exception of the as-yet-unsettled FTC case, Intel's antitrust docket is looking pretty clean these days.

The units are available with Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, Pentrium and Celetron CPUs, and on the GPU front, there's an NVIDIA GeForce FX380 or Intel's GMA X4500. Other specifications include up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 1TB or 500GB hard drive, Gigabit Ethernet, DVD burner and some of the slimmest, easiest to hide enclosures that we've seen to date.

The M70e starts at $559, while the A70 starts at $379.

Two New Desktops for Business

Today, we are announcing two new products: the ThinkCentre M70e – an entry level enterprise PC – and the A70 – for growing businesses looking for a boost in processing, memory and graphics without a high investment cost. M70e models start at $559, while A70 models start at $379 (USD). They come in small form factor and tower designs.

Key Specs include:

    * Intel Core2Quad, Core2Duo, Pentium and Celeron processor choices. Core2Quad processors are available with the M70e
    * NVIDIA GeForce FX380 Quadro or Intel integrated GMA X4500 graphic choices
    * High speed DDR3 memory up to 4 GB
    * Large hard drives up to 500 GB and up to 1 TB in the M70e
    * Gigabit Ethernet and DVD burner
    * ThinkVantage Tools with Rescue and Recovery to protect against data loss

Desktop Design Matters

The M70e tower is ergonomically designed, taking into account how people interact with their PCs today. Wired recently examined the evolution of office space from factory layouts to cubes to open floor plans. Dubbed by some as “progressive companies,” we’re seeing more use of modular, reconfigurable, flexible furniture to adapt to changing business dynamics. We’re responding to this trend in the office environment with our PC design.

Sweat the Small Stuff

As the workplace shrinks and open floor plans thrive, PC towers that used to live on top of desks are now typically stowed underneath, completely changing the ergonomics.

John Swansey, an M70e designer, told me, “We grouped together frequently accessed controls near the top of the PC where they are easy to reach whether the PC is placed on the floor, on a desk, or in computer furniture. The indicator lights and power button are on a panel angled toward the use, and the power button is shielded from accidental use by an elegant chrome ring.  USB and audio ports are placed conveniently next to the DVD drive at the top of the machine where they are visible and accessible. The red-striped DVD drive eject button, borrowed from our ThinkPad heritage, is easily noticeable.”

These seemingly subtle improvements allow the user to make smooth, natural movements to access the PC, and overlooking them can lead to a frustrating experience. In PC design, we’re challenged to shave millimeters – not inches – and fractions – not pounds – off products. We used a smaller motherboard and rearranged internal components more efficiently to carve 14 mm from the width and reduce the size of the M70e by more than 20% compared to previous ThinkCentre desktops. And we made the M70e slightly lighter by thinning the chassis while retaining its solid structure, quality and durability.

Better thermodynamics means PCs last longer and consumer less power, so we improved heat dissipation and lowered the risk of hard-drive and CPU failure on even the hottest days. To do this, we redesigned the motherboard and added an extra fan and side vent. As a result, the M70e runs almost 10% cooler than previous models.

The M70e also continues Lenovo’s environmental commitment by using 15% less power than older models and using a front plastic bezel that contains 35% post consumer recycled plastic. Most desktops in the industry average 15%.

Businesses Care about Desktop Design & Technology

Why do we continue to invest in desktop design and technology?

IDC forecasts traditional desktop PCs to be nearly half of the worldwide commercial enterprise PC demand. And we’re experiencing strong demand in emerging market countries as they build new businesses and industries. In fact, IDC research analyst Jay Chou observed that, “an aging commercial installed base, a proliferation of low-cost media-centric PCs and low PC penetration through must of the world” account for the 21% global PC growth in Q2 2010. The data also forecasts 48 million units, or 60% of commercial desktop sales worldwide, will be mini-towers sized between 20L – 34L. That’s right in line with the M70e tower, and we’ll continue to bring these kinds of designs to market to help drive productivity and efficiency.

According to reports, Intel is having trouble convincing notebook players that its Atom+Windows combo is a good fit for tablets. Instead, tablet makers are turning their attention to ARM processors and combining them with Google's uber popular Android platform.

The problem here for Intel is two-fold. First, ARM chips hold the advantage in price, power consumption, and heat dissipation, three extremely important areas in the tablet space. And secondly, Android is arguably the fastest growing OS right now, and has a legitimate shot at knocking Apple's iPad back on its heels. Meanwhile, we've seen a handful of Windows-based tablets fall by the wayside, including Microsoft's own dual-screen Courier device.

The good news for Intel is that vendors are unwilling to completely cut ties with the chip maker and are at least planning to release some Atom/Windows-based tablets in small volumes. Depending on how those are received, the tablet game could change very quickly.
