PDF Vulnerability Exposed by JailbreakMe
The JailbreakMe website which allows users to have a browser-based jailbreak for their iOS devices is great for jailbreakers, but works because of a vulnerability in iOS: the iPhone automatically downloads PDF files, and the developer, Comex injected the jailbreak code into the FlateDecode stream section of the file. This is a clear problem for Apple and for non-jailbreakers. Why is it not a problem for jailbreakers? Well, once the device is jailbroken, you can patch the hole, to prevent malware from using the same trick to hack into your iPhone. The fix, or rather the workaround, comes from @cdevwill on Twitter on Monday.
cdevwill's change will present a user with a warning whenever a PDF file is about to be opened by iOS. This will prevent a malicious website from loading malware using a PDF file without the user's knowledge.

In fact, if you look, the fix should be on Cydia later today as "PDF Warning Loader." That should include everything you need to install the fix easily. If instead, you can't wait, you'll have to follow the following instructions (assuming you've already jailbroken your iPhone) and installed OpenSSH from Cydia.
Download this .deb file. Place it in /var/mobile on your device.
Then, you need to open it on your device. On the Mac, you can use Terminal, as follows:
- ssh root@your IP address
- alpine (default password for SSH; if you've changed it use that new password)
- dpkg -i file.deb
Using iFile: on your iPhone, simply navigate to /var/mobile and double tap on the .deb file to install it.
Once again, you can try to look for the package to appear on Cydia, and as we also said, this is really just a safeguard / workaround. Apple will have to patch this security hole in a future update of iOS (which will also, naturally, close this jailbreak).

Verizon Confirms: No Mobile HotSpot Or Internet Tethering On DROID's Android 2.2 Update
As of now, just two smartphones have seen their official Android 2.2 (Froyo) rollout begin: the Nexus One and HTC's EVO 4G. Hacks and leaked ROMs are out there if you feel like rooting, but the official installation is usually a lot less buggy. Motorola's DROID was one of the first major Android 2.0 handsets to take Android to the mainstream, and many expected that it would be one of the first phones out to receive Google's latest Android build. If you take "one of the first" literally, we suppose it still will be, but it won't delight people as much as you may have expected.According to Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney, the Android 2.2 build for the DROID won't include two of its most highly anticipated features, but we cannot say that we're surprised. Mobile HotSpot and Internet Tethering were two aspects of Froyo that gave the OS a serious leg-up over iOS back when we reviewed it, but of course, U.S. carriers want consumers to pay extra for amenities like that. Because carrier's have such control over software in America, Verizon will not be pushing those two features live on the DROID when the updates start flying this week.
Here's the full quote: "The Droid by Motorola doesn't have [the] hardware to support a Mobile Hotspot. With tethering there is no Connection on the PC side that will allow you to tether the device so the answer is that option isn't part of this update."
Honestly, most of this sounds untrue. The DROID has the power to surf to Flash-enabled Websites, but not to use the built-in Wi-Fi radio to distribute 3G? Sounds like hot air to us. In reality, we didn't expect Verizon to go along with this anyway, but these excuses are certainly questionable. In fact, we have to wonder how badly VZW simply wants DROID users to upgrade to the DROID X or incoming DROID 2. Either way, the Froyo update just became a lot less exciting for original DROID users.
Might we say, DROID doesn't?

Report: Android Shipments Surge 886% Year-Over-Year
We've heard on more than one occasion lately that Android is picking up serious steam in the smartphone market. Even though Apple recently launched the iPhone 4 with iOS 4, the Antennagate issue as well as fantastic hardware from the likes of Samsung, LG, HTC and Motorola have given people a reason to choose an alternative. Android is available on every major U.S. carrier, whereas the iPhone 4 is tied to AT&T. Android also offers more customization, and as we stated in our Android 2.2 review, it's a better operating system for those who like to tinker.Evidently a lot of people enjoy the art of tinkering, as a recent report from Canalys shows that Android smartphone shipments have risen a whopping 886% year-over-year in Q2 2010 compared to Q2 2009. Overall the smartphone market grew by 64% annually worldwide this quarter, but it's the Android focal point that has everyone buzzing. Nokia's overall market share slipped to 38% (from 41% a year ago), RIM's BlackBerry shipments rose by 41%, Apple's market share increased to 13% -- but none of those figures 'wow' like the Android state.
It certainly helps that a whole slew of vendors are making Android phones for a whole slew of carriers, but there's no question that Google has crafted something desirable. Canalys VP and Principal Analyst, Chris Jones, summed it up nicely: "The latest release of our detailed and complete country-level smart phone shipment data for Q2 2010 clearly reveals the impressive momentum Android is gaining in markets around the world. In the United States, for example, we have seen the largest carrier, Verizon Wireless, heavily promoting high-profile Android devices, such as the Droid by Motorola and the Droid Incredible by HTC. These products have been well received by the market, with consumers eager to download and engage with mobile applications and services, such as Internet browsing, social networking, games and navigation."
The link below has the rest of the stats, but the takeaway is pretty clear: Apple isn't a shoe-in for the biggest up-and-coming star anymore, and they'll need to innovate way faster than they have been if they plan on keeping step with Android.
Android smart phone shipments grow 886% year-on-year in Q2 2010
- Nokia retains smart phone leadership position, but competitors close the gap
Palo Alto, Singapore and Reading (UK) – Monday, 2 August 2010
Nokia retained a substantial lead in the worldwide smart phone market in Q2 2010, achieving a 38% market share. The vendor shipped a record 23.8 million smart phones during the quarter, representing growth of 41% on a year ago, as it focused on delivering affordable smart phone offerings to the market, such as its popular 5230 touch-screen handset, based on the Symbian operating system (OS). But Nokia’s market dominance is not as unassailable as it once was, with its performance outpaced by growth in the smart phone market as a whole.
The smart phone market grew by 64% annually worldwide in Q2 2010. At the same time, shipments of RIM’s BlackBerry smart phones grew by 41%. Helped by the continued strong performances of devices such as the Curve 8520, it was once again the second placed vendor with an 18% market share, while also retaining its leadership position in North and Latin America. Despite a period of turbulent PR, initial shipments of the iPhone 4 were predictably strong and contributed to Apple’s 61% growth and worldwide market share of 13% for the quarter. But analysis of Canalys’ detailed, globally consistent data shows it is the collective growth of Android device shipments across a range of handset vendors’ portfolios that is most remarkable. With key products from HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG, among others, shipments of smart phones running the Google-backed Android operating system grew an impressive 886% in Q2 2010.
‘The latest release of our detailed and complete country-level smart phone shipment data for Q2 2010 clearly reveals the impressive momentum Android is gaining in markets around the world,’ said Canalys VP and Principal Analyst, Chris Jones, commenting on the publication. ‘In the United States, for example, we have seen the largest carrier, Verizon Wireless, heavily promoting high-profile Android devices, such as the Droid by Motorola and the Droid Incredible by HTC. These products have been well received by the market, with consumers eager to download and engage with mobile applications and services, such as Internet browsing, social networking, games and navigation.’ The United States smart phone market grew 41% year on year. It is the largest smart phone market in the world by a significant margin, with 14.7 million units accounting for 23% of global shipments in Q2 2010. Android devices collectively represented a 34% share of the US market in the quarter, and with growth of 851% Android became the largest smart phone platform in the country.
US and China smart phone market
‘The story in the Asia Pacific region is similarly optimistic around Android,’ noted Senior Analyst, TY Lau. ‘Android devices are gaining good traction in markets such as mainland China and South Korea, with growing numbers of consumers wanting more sophisticated smart phones.’ China was the world’s second largest smart phone market in Q2 2010 for the sixth consecutive quarter, with shipments of 6.9 million units representing 11% of the worldwide total. Android devices combined reached almost 475,000 units in Q2 2010 from no presence in the country a year ago. It is also important to note that China Mobile is committed to developing its own platform, OMS, based on Android, and an additional 174,000 smart phones shipped in the quarter running OMS. ‘Given Google’s substantial involvement in the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), that its relationship with the Chinese authorities appears to have improved recently, and that its operating licence has been renewed, will help reduce concerns that tensions could have an impact on the potential for the OHA-based Android and OMS platforms in the country, particularly among vendors that have committed resources to producing Android devices for the Chinese market,’ added Lau. ‘Nokia’s Symbian devices continue to dominate the market, but other vendors are clearly making good headway with Android in China. Motorola and Samsung, as well as local vendors, such as Dopod, Lenovo and Huawei, are achieving promising volumes on the platform, and Android devices held a 7% share in China this quarter.’ Despite a close relationship with its strategic partner Dopod, HTC, the world’s leading Android device vendor, announced last week that it is entering the Chinese market with its own-branded smart phones. With a population of 1.3 billion, China represents a market with enormous growth potential and Canalys expects Android to be among the platforms that will drive growth in the coming quarters and years.
Growth in the worldwide smart phone market reflects the increasing importance of smart phones in device vendors’ and operators’ handset portfolios, as growing numbers of consumers appear eager to engage with mobile applications and connected services. ‘Expect to see smart phones accounting for a growing proportion of the wider mobile phone market as they become increasingly affordable to more customers,’ said Canalys Senior Analyst, Pete Cunningham. ‘By 2013, smart phones will grow to represent over 27% of shipments worldwide, with the proportion in some developed markets in Western Europe surpassing 60% and 48% in North America.’
Canalys’ annual smart phone market trends report, now in its ninth successful year, pulls together, in a concise format, qualitative analysis of key market trends, top-level market share and shipment estimates for the leading vendors, comparative analysis of vendors’ performance and evaluation of their strengths and weaknesses, and forecasts for future market development. The new Canalys smart phone market trends report is now available. More details can be found at www.canalys.com/services/reports.

Infinitec Opens Pre-Orders for IUM & Announces World's First Dual-WiFi Consumer Product
Pre-Orders of the Highly Anticipated Infinite USB Memory Drive (IUM) are now open through the Infinitec Website.

"We've been able to alter the DNA of WiFi networks, so to speak, to create a unique solution that gives our customers a complete and seamless experience. First 4G LTE Phone Gets Approved By The FCC
Recently, the FCC approved the first handset that will use LTE (long-term evolution) 4G technology. Although Sprint may have been the first to launch a WiMAX phone earlier this year with the HTC EVO 4G, MetroPCS is hoping to be the first carrier to launch the first handset in the United States with LTE 4G technology on board.Earlier this year, MetroPCS announced its first LTE 4G wireless handset in the form of the Samsung SCH-r900 in March. Now this phone has been approved by the FCC. Although FCC approval doesn't mean the phone will be available soon, MetroPCS has said that it hopes to launch the LTE handset sometime this summer. MetroPCS hasn't provided an update in recent months on the progress with its LTE network and hasn't said when the upgraded network or the device will launch.

Verizon Wireless is working on its own LTE build out and is committed to launching 25 to 30 markets later this year. We expect the first devices to launch will be laptop dongles rather than phones.

Gaming keypads with mecanical keys
Hey everyone. Not been around much the last few weeks. Been super busy and a bunch of my free time has been takin up by my clan moving to a new server. Getting the box up and running with the 8 servers we are running. Only to realize that the box they moved us to was crap. But that's a long story. Short story is PrimaryTarget is shady or just retarded. Not really sure if they were trying to pull a fast one or if they truly are just clueless.
Anyway. I picked up a Belkin N52te the other day. I used to love my N50 way back so I thought I would love this. It is a decent device, but I really don't like the keys. My keyboard has made me a bit of a snob I guess. The rubber dome keys just feel like they take 5 times the pressure to actually press and while it doesn't seem like much it throws me off and wears my hand out after 20 minutes or so of gaming. I was wondering if anyone has seen gaming keypads with mechanical key switches. For the price of most of these like the Logitech G13 you would think they wouldn't use cheap rubber membrane keys, but I can't find anything. Even "gaming" keyboards seem to all stick to cheap keys. Don't need anything really nice. My keyboard is generally considered just ok as far as mecanical keyboards go. (ABS M1 with Black Alps Copies)
